The Reinvention Of The Riflescope
Continues – How do you improve the LPS ® ? After all,
it’s already one of the highest performing rifle scopes in the
world. But that’s part of the reason we’re so excited about the
new LPS 3.5-14x50mm Side Focus and LPS 2.5-10x45mm:
they take legendary LPS performance even further.
The new LPS 3.5-14x50mm has a turret mounted
side-focus parallax adjustment so you can change parallax
settings easily, even from the shooting position. The 50mm
objective lens aids in giving you an amazingly bright sight
picture, but still allows you to mount your LPS as close as
possible to the rifle. Finally, the long maintube gives you
generous ring mount space for rifles with long actions.
this purpose in mind,
our growing list of
winners would certainly be incomplete without our
2000 Jack Slack Writer of the Year, John Wootters.
John’s work has appeared in every major periodical in
the field, including Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, Field
& Stream, and Gray’s Sporting Journal, where his
conversational writing style and the depth of his
knowledge have brought him a worldwide readership.
His book Hunting Trophy Deer is estimated to be the
all-time best selling book on the subject of whitetailed
deer hunting. John is presently the executive
field editor to Petersen Companies’ Hunting magazine.
Buck Sense
In one sense, the moment in which one ceases to be
a mere deer killer and becomes a deer hunter is the
first time he deliberately allows a buck to live longer
than the interval required to raise the rifle and align
the sights.
allow you to sight-in the firearm or make field adjustments.)
The Facts
an authoritative look
ADJUSTABLE OBJECTIVE
(On some scopes, this adjustment eliminates parallax
for specific distances. On our Long Range, Mark 4,
and LPS 3.5-14x50mm Side Focus models, parallax
adjustments are made with a third knob on the turret.)
Leupold ® Builds Scopes To Last Not Just
For A Lifetime...But For Generations
It’s why shooters expect performance from their Leupold
scope that they just wouldn’t ask of a lesser brand. It’s
why we’re not afraid to back up our scopes with the
strongest guarantee in the business: the Leupold Full
Lifetime Guarantee. (See back cover)
The Heart Of The Matter
Ruggedness and waterproofing are the heart and soul of
every scope we make. Why? If your scope breaks or the
lenses fog, it’s absolutely useless. This doesn’t mean the
optics take a backseat. Leupold optics are worth going to
extremes to protect. The result is an ideal balance
between optical excellence and total durability. Since the
production of our very first scope in 1947, we’ve been the
benchmark by which all other rifle scopes are judged.
4
Arm Yourself With Knowledge
Of course, we want you to make an educated decision
when choosing your next riflescope. So in the midst of the
confusion created by lesser brands, Leupold offers you
this clear look at the facts surrounding optics and
riflescope construction.
Optics 101
On a basic level, all rifle scopes work the same. Light rays
enter the objective lens, which magnifies them. This
upside-down image travels to the erector lens system,
which flips the image right-side up and further magnifies it.
The ocular lens magnifies the image a final time, then
projects it to your eye. However, all scopes certainly don’t
perform the same, optically or mechanically.
Light Transmission
Critical Optical Properties
In a riflescope, getting the maximum amount of pure
light to your eye is critical. At Leupold, we call this light
management. The following are critical optical properties
to look for in a riflescope, to determine how well it
manages light.
Contrast is the best indicator of proper light management.
Resolution and light transmission (often mistakenly called
light gathering) enhance contrast while glare degrades it.
Resolution means a crisp, finely detailed image. Without
good resolution the remaining optical elements are
useless.
Light Transmission is the measure of how much pure
light makes it through the lenses before reaching
your eye. It’s affected by the efficiency of the glass,
the quality of anti-reflective coatings, and the
control of glare.

ERECTOR LENSES
(This system rights the image.)
Glare is stray light reflecting off internal
parts of a scope that enters the light
path. Excessive glare diminishes all
other optical properties.
The Mechanics Of Shooting Optics
Scopes are precision instruments with both stationary and
moving parts in a housing. They must withstand
punishment that most optical instruments will never face
and couldn’t survive. That’s why, in addition to critical
optical properties, there are key mechanical attributes a
good scope must have.
Ruggedness is a scope’s ability to take physical
abuse, such as repeated recoil and the rigors of
the field. Reticles can break. Seals can give way. Internal
systems can be blasted apart. Only good design, materials,
and manufacturing can prevent
these problems.
POWER SELECTOR RING
(This adjusts magnification on variable power scopes.)
RETICLE HOUSING
(The reticle is the central aiming
OCULAR LENS
(It works with the objective and
erector lenses to magnify the
image, and then projects it,
with the reticle, to the eye.)
Waterproofing scopes by filling them with nitrogen and
sealing them against moisture is a process Leupold
pioneered. Even today, some other brands of scopes are
not waterproof. The challenge is developing seals that
keep the nitrogen in and water out over the life of
a scope.
Repeatable Accuracy
is the ability to shoot
a tight group at every
power setting on a
variable power scope, 3x Magnification 9x Magnification
ideally with a single point of impact. Repeated recoil and
physical abuse can limit some scopes’ ability to do this.
Eye Relief is the space between your eye and the scope’s
eyepiece. Ample eye relief keeps your eye a safe distance
from the scope during recoil.
Putting Optics To The Test
To make sure Leupold rifle scopes have the critical
optical and mechanical properties a shooter needs,
we put them through stringent testing at the Leupold
optics labs at our Beaverton, Oregon plant. Using
sophisticated equipment we monitor every phase of
the design and construction of our scopes, in ways
other manufacturers haven’t even thought of.
Making An Impact
In just 24 hours, the Leupold impact tester subjects a
scope to 5,000 violent blows, each matching the force of a
.375 H&H Magnum rifle’s recoil. Broken reticles, loose
parts, or adjustments that move mean failure. Though it’s
one of the harshest tests in the industry, Leupold scopes
consistently pass unscathed.
Water Torture
To test our scopes’ waterproof seals, every Leupold is
placed in a specially manufactured tank full of 120ÞF
water. Once submerged, we generate a vacuum that makes
the pressure inside the scope greater than the pressure
outside. If the waterproof seals are flawed, tiny bubbles of
gas escape the scope. Our LPS and Mark 4 scopes must
pass an even more exacting waterproofing test. The
scopes are sealed inside a chamber where a sensitive
electronic sensor can determine if trace amounts of
nitrogen are leaking.
These demanding tests not only ensure that shooters can
count on their Leupold’s reliability in the field, they’re
invaluable in building better, stronger scopes in the future.
Built To Last Generations
One last piece of information: Leupold is a family-owned,
fourth-generation company that has been manufacturing
precision optical products in the U.S. for nearly a century.
Our success is based on your absolute satisfaction.
It’s why we design and build our scopes to last
generations.
Leupold
Premier
s c o p e s
Retired Portland, Oregon Gunmaker Earl Milliorn
built this beautiful pre-1964 Winchester Model 70,
fitted with Leupold Dual Dovetail bases and rings
which hold the new LPS 3.5-14x50mm Side Focus.
How Do You Improve On Perfection?
From the outset, the LPS ® (Leupold Premier Scope) was
designed to outperform every other scope on earth,
which is why we’re so excited about our two new
Leupold Premier Scopes. We’ve taken the LPS
performance even further with the entirely new
LPS 3.5-14x50mm Side Focus and LPS 2.5-10x45mm.
But before we tell you what’s new, let’s take a look
at what even we at Leupold couldn’t improve on.
The LPS offers an astoundingly high 99.65% light
transmission per lens surface, for total light transmission
of about 92%. For brightness, the LPS is simply
unbeatable.
All lenses are fully coated with DiamondCoat , our
advanced, multi-layer, anti-reflective lens coating that
helps us achieve such high levels of light transmission.
6
The objective and ocular lenses of each LPS are coated
with a special Ion-Assist formula of DiamondCoat that
makes them ten times more scratch resistant than is
required by the military.
All LPS models still offer constant, non-critical eye relief.
You get the strength of a rugged one-piece, 30mm
maintube that contains a larger erector system for better
image clarity. You get extensive windage and elevation
adjustment range, low-profile finger-adjustable windage
and elevation dials which can be zeroed without tools, and
the easy-to-grip rubber power selector with easy-to-read
angled numbering.
Considering the LPS was already a landmark in
performance, what could we improve? The
LPS 3.5-14x50mm Side Focus features a turret mounted
side-focus parallax knob so you can adjust
parallax settings even in the shooting position.
It’s an addition that will be very welcome to serious
hunters and shooters.
With the LPS 3.5-14x50mm Side Focus’ extended-length
maintube, you have generous mount ring space to fit the
largest rifle actions. It’s also lightweight for a scope of its
size, making it a true luxury on long hunts in rough country.
Our other entirely new LPS model, the LPS 2.5-10x45mm,
offers big game hunters the mid-range magnification they
need. We also achieve two things with the 45mm objective
lens. First, even at 10x, it has a 4.5mm exit pupil. Second,
the 45mm objective is small enough that you can mount it
closely to your rifle. As all experienced shooters know, it’s
crucial to mount a scope as low as possible.
The only model we didn’t change was the LPS 1.5-6x42mm.
As we’ve said, it’s hard to improve on perfection.

your next scope, you can count on Leupold’s Vari-X II.
Leupold quality, reliability, and accuracy are built into
every model.
To check repeatable accuracy in a variable power,
you must be able to shoot a tight group at each
power setting, with a single point of impact.
Leupold’s extremely close machining tolerances of
crucial parts ensures there’s no shift in the point
of impact. Our design engineers have
spent years perfecting the Leupold
erector assembly, which is the
foundation for our scopes consistently
excellent accuracy.
Fixed Power
s c o p e s
While variable power scopes are most
common, there are still hunters and
shooters who have one particular
magnification that brings everything
into focus for them. For this group,
we offer these six versatile fixedpower
scopes.
M8-2.5x28mm IER Scout
M8-6x36mm
For all the shooters worldwide who are rediscovering the
classic lever-action rifle, our M8-2.5x28mm IER Scout is
the ideal choice. Designed specifically for lever-action and
scout-style rifles, it offers 9 to 17 inches of eye relief (IER
stands for “Intermediate Eye Relief”). The Scout is
mounted on the barrel, in front of the receiver.
The M8-4x33mm is a more traditional selection. It offers
the constant, non-critical eye relief typical of Leupold
scopes. While it has a long history of success, it’s just
10.5 inches in length – short for a 4x scope.
12
M8-4x33mm
For intermediate to long-range shooting there’s the
M8-6x36mm. It offers all the magnification you need
and a generous 17-foot field of view at 100 yards.
With the M8-6x42mm you get greater light transmission
with the same magnification and field of view.
The M8-6x42mm Adj. Obj. Target scope gives you the same
excellent light transmission and magnification as the
standard M8-6x42mm model. Its tall, target-style windage
Finishes available: Gloss Matte Silver
M8-6x42mm with Multicoat 4
and elevation adjustment knobs with 1/4-MOA clicks and a
full 15-MOA of adjustment for each revolution make it
perfect for hunter benchrest shooting.
The M8-12x40mm Adj. Obj. gives you an up-close view
of the farthest targets. It features Multicoat 4 ® , our
proprietary anti-reflective lens coating, for a clear picture in
all light conditions.

This beautifully engraved Ruger #1 in .223 is topped
with a 12x. The rifle first appeared in our 1983 catalog.
Originally built for Jack Slack, longtime Leupold VP, the
rifle is now owned by Jack’s son Michael. The rifle was
stocked by Earl Milliron with engraving by Franz Marktl.
Leupold’s first riflescope, the Plainsman, introduced
in 1947, was a fixed power scope. The Plainsman
was also the first truly waterproof scope, making
it a watershed event in the history of the shooting
sports. In addition to nitrogen charging and sealing
technology, our long history of innovation also
includes:
• The Duplex ® reticle
• Easy-to-use range
estimating
• Side focusing
• Scratch-resistant lens
coatings
• Lightweight/high
& compact
s c o p e s
Just as we make scopes tailored for the
specific needs of long range, target,
tactical, and handgun shooters,
Leupold makes a variety of scopes to
meet an array of special requirements.
Everyone from dangerous game and turkey hunters to
muzzleloading, rimfire, and airgun enthusiasts will find
a scope that complements their particular passion.
The Compacts
Leupold compact scopes may be small in stature
but they’re big on ruggedness, dependability, and
craftsmanship, just like
our full-size models.
The M8-2.5x20mm
Compact is an excellent
example of this. Brought
back into the Leupold line
14
M8-4x28mm Compact RF Special
by popular demand, it has generous exit pupil and
remarkable eye relief, as well as an expansive field of
view. It’s ideal for turkey hunting, shotgun deer hunting,
crossbow hunting, even hunting dangerous game. It’s also
available with an optional Turkey Ranger reticle.
The variable power Vari-X 3-9x33mm Compact is just
11 inches in length, but is big on versatility, offering
a truly exceptional sight picture. For sports such as air
rifle shooting, in which precision close focusing is a must,
there’s our Vari-X 3-9x33mm EFR Compact.
Vari-X 3-9x33mm EFR Compact (Gloss Finish Only)
If weight is your main concern, the 8.2 ounce, 9.9 inch
Vari-X 2-7x28mm Compact is one of the lightest compact
scopes ever made. It’s available in two models: the
standard, parallax adjusted for 150 yards, and the RF
Special, parallax adjusted to 60 yards for rimfire rifles.
Leupold’s M8-4x28mm Compact RF Special has a Fine
Duplex reticle and is specifically designed for rimfire rifles
with parallax adjusted for 60 yards.

The all-new Kimber 22 SuperAmerica has controlled
round feeding, two position Model 70-type safety,
ebony forend tip, and wrap around checkering. All
Kimber rifles must shoot groups under .400 at 50
yards or they don't leave the factory. Every one of
those groups is shot with a Leupold scope.
Vari-X II 1-4x20mm Shotgun/Muzzleloader
M8-4x33mm Shotgun/Muzzleloader
Shotgun/Muzzleloader Scopes
While many hunters enjoy
the added challenge of
hunting with a shotgun or
muzzleloader, they still
appreciate the accuracy they
gain mounting one of these
three Leupold scopes. They’re
practical in a number of
close-in shooting situations.
Vari-X II 2-7x33mm Shotgun/Muzzleloader
Three key things set Leupold Shotgun/Muzzleloader
scopes apart and make them exceptional for close-range
shooting. First, they’re parallax adjusted to 75 yards.
Second, they offer a 24 to 75-foot field of view at
100 yards, depending on the model. Third, they come with
Leupold’s Heavy Duplex reticle for precise shot placement
on targets even in dense cover.
Leupold pioneered what is now the industry standard
for waterproofing: charging a scope with bone dry
nitrogen. Even today, nobody can match Leupold’s
sealing process, which protects the interior from all
forms of moisture. Your Leupold is guaranteed to
remain waterproof in even the most demanding
conditions, from torrential downpours and dunks in a
river to taking a scope from freezing conditions into
a warm cabin. For more on Leupold ruggedness and
waterproofing, see pages 4-5.
Competition
S c o p e s
Benchrest Scopes
As sticklers for precision, benchrest shooters are
notoriously difficult to satisfy. So it’s no small source
of pride that, by our estimate, between 85 and 90 percent
of all competitive benchrest shooters use Leupold
benchrest scopes.
BR-D 24x40mm Adj. Obj. Target with Multicoat 4 Vari-X III 6.5-20x40mm EFR Target with Multicoat 4
The locking adjustable objective on our BR-D 24x40mm and
BR-D 36x40mm scopes are partly to thank for these
scopes’ astounding accuracy. With it, a shooter can hold
a precise focus for a given distance. These scopes also
feature Multicoat 4, our anti-reflective lens coating, for
a superior sight picture.
Target/Long Range Target Scopes
The Vari-X III 6.5-20x50mm Long Range Target and
Vari-X III 8.5-25x50mm Long Range Target are
breakthrough scopes with two key features:
16
BR-D 36x40mm Adj. Obj. Target with Multicoat 4
1) Low profile, side focus parallax adjustment that’s
convenient to operate in any shooting position.
2) A 30mm maintube for a generous range of windage
and elevation adjustments – more than 65-MOA each.
For hunter benchrest shooting, try the M8-6x42mm
Adj. Obj. Target scope. It has tall, target style windage
Finishes available: Gloss Matte Silver
Vari-X II 6-18x40mm Adj. Obj. Target
and elevation adjustment knobs with 1/4-MOA clicks
and a full 15-MOA for each revolution, and each
lens surface is coated with Multicoat 4 for optimal
light transmission.
The Vari-X II 6-18x40mm Adj. Obj. is the most affordable
option for target shooters, but still offers an exceptional
sight picture and tall, target style elevation adjustments.

This 10 1/2 lb. Light Varmint Class Benchrest Rifle
was especially built for use with a new experimental
competition scope. Owned by Jim Carmichel, the Farley
Vari-X III 6.5-20x50mm Long Range Target
Vari-X III 8.5-25x50mm Long Range Target
For the super-close focusing needs of airgun shooters, we
offer the Vari-X III 6.5-20x40mm EFR (Extended Focus
Range) scope. You can adjust this scope’s parallax from
10 meters out to infinity.
M8-6x42mm Adj. Obj. Target
Light reflecting off lens surfaces diminishes light
transmission and image quality. So Leupold
engineers developed Multicoat 4, a system of
indexed, matched lens coatings we use in our lenses
and mirrored surfaces. Multicoat 4 transmits 92
percent of available light to your eye, while at the
same time minimizing the
reflections of the sky on
the outer eyepiece. You’ll
never be able to control
the light, but with
Leupold’s Multicoat 4,
you can always make the
most of it.
Red Dot &
Handgun
s c o p e s
Leupold/Gilmore Red Dot Sights &
Handgun Scopes
The Leupold/Gilmore Red Dot Sight is at its best where
the shooting is fast and close. Just keep both eyes open,
place the dot on target and
fire...what you see is what
you get. The crisp red dot
has 11 brightness settings
to match any shooting
conditions. With unlimited eye relief
you can put the dot on target fast, no matter
what kind of firearm you’re shooting.
Shooters are putting it on just about everything. The
Leupold/Gilmore Red Dot works equally well on
muzzleloaders, shotguns, bows, and rifles for hunting as it
does on pistols for hunting and competition shooting.
The LG-35 is available in both an all-black matte version
18
with a 4-MOA dot, perfect for hunting, or the original twotone
silver/black version. Both LG-35s deliver a
70-foot field of view at 100 yards. The LG-1 is available in
silver/black only and serves up a 45-foot field of
view at 100 yards.
All three are constructed of the same 6061-T6
aluminum as traditional Leupold scopes for
exceptional ruggedness, and are nitrogen filled
and sealed to be water and fog proof. Each
includes lens covers, mounting rings for
cross-slot bases, a battery, a mount
extension tube, and an instruction book.
The heart of this Pardini modified for bulls eye by
Lou Lombardi of Falcon Machining Ltd. is its stainless
steel Shilen match grade barrel. The aluminum barrel
shroud and custom scope mount improve the
balance and handling of the gun. With the
addition of the Leupold Red Dot, the gun has a
handsome appearance.
M8-4x28mm EER
Vari-X 2.5-8x32mm EER with Multicoat 4
EER Handgun Scopes
It’s a fact: today’s large
caliber/lightweight
handguns deliver
crushing recoil that tops
some of the hardest
kicking rifles. That’s why Leupold puts such effort into
building and relentlessly testing our EER (Extended Eye
Relief) handgun scopes. It follows that our attention to
detail is why so many manufacturers of powerful handguns
such as Magnum Research ® and Freedom Arms ® recommend
and sell Leupold EER scopes.
The M8-2x20mm EER is our classic handgun scope, while
the M8-4x28mm EER offers more magnification. The
Vari-X 2.5-8x32mm EER may just be the finest variable
power handgun scope available.
Of course, each EER scope offers generous
and forgiving eye relief for fast target
acquisition, as well as an exceptionally
bright, crisp sight picture, rich in visual
detail and contrast. All three
models have Multicoat 4
anti-reflective lens coating.
Doug Koenig...
Leupold Shooter
Team Leupold’s Doug Koenig, considered by many to be the
world’s best all-around shooter, may have proven it beyond
a doubt in 2000. In a year of unprecedented success,
Doug won the 2000 Steel Challenge, the Masters
International Shooting Championship and the NRA
Bianchi Cup. His record overall speaks volumes,
as well. Over the past ten years, Doug Koenig has won
seven Masters Championships, four NRA Bianchi Cups,
the IPSC World Championship, the European Bianchi Cup,
Leupold Offers 16 Reticle Options In A
Variety Of Leupold Scopes. Each is designed
to help you achieve your goals in whatever type of
illuminated reticle options in our Vari-X III line of scopes
(pages 8-9). To learn which reticles are available for a
given scope, refer to the ordering information on page 42.
If you don’t see the reticle you prefer listed for a
Illuminated
German #4 Dot
New! Illuminated German #4 Dot
The dot floats at the center of the heavy
posts, so you can take advantage of both
the precision shot placement of a dot
reticle and the fast target acquisition of a
German #4 reticle.
26
Fine Duplex
Thinner posts and crosshairs allow for less
target coverage, making precision shots
on small targets easy.
Duplex
Leupold invented the Duplex design more
than 20 years ago. Heavy posts stand out
against cover and in twilight conditions,
pointing boldly to the
intersection. Centering
is a snap. The thin
crosshairs obscure little.
Illuminated
Duplex
Heavy Duplex
With its heavy posts, the Heavy
Duplex reticle is especially useful
in low-light conditions.
CPC
As an alternative to the sharp step-down
of the Duplex, the CPC reticle is a steady
taper down to a fine intersection.
This gives a faster reference than a
conventional crosshair by leading your eye
to the center.
which seems to “float.” The crosshairs are
extremely thin.
Leupold Dot
A Leupold exclusive, this reticle still
has a prominent dot like the so-called
“floating dot.” But the thinning portion of
the crosshair makes locating the dot
much easier.
These
The conventional crosshair is still a
popular choice among shooters because
of its simplicity and versatility.
Mil. Dot
Several Leupold rifle scopes are available
with the Mil. Dot reticle, which was
designed to help U.S. Marine Corps
snipers estimate distances. It’s now
standard for all military branches.
Range Estimating With
The Mil. Dot Reticle
Illuminated
German #4
With practice, it’s a simple system
Illuminated
Mil. Dot
to use. Dots are spaced in one mil
(milliradian) increments on the crosshair. Using the mil
formula, a table can be created that is based on the size
of the object being targeted. Just look through the scope,
bracket the object between dots and refer to
the table for an
estimated distance
to target. Leupold
scopes fitted with
the Mil. Dot reticle
include more
specific instruction
on its use.

scopes
Selected Vari-X III scopes have a built-in range estimator. It’s a simple
system that uses the Duplex reticle and two sets of numbers on the
power selector ring.
The numbers facing front show the scope’s magnifications. The
numbers facing back show distances in yards and meters.
Looking through the scope, the space between the tip of the thicker post and the center of the
reticle covers 16" at 200 yards, when set at low power.
selector so that the deer’s body fits between the center of the crosshair and the top of the lower
heavy post. Then, read the approximate distance in yards, from a minimum of 200 at low power
to a maximum of 600 at high power.
The range estimator is available on these Vari-X III models: 1.75-6x32mm E, 2.5-8x36mm, 3.5-
10x40mm, 3.5-10x50mm, 4.5-14x40mm, and 4.5-14x50mm.
(Continued From Page 3) – Most of us fall into that first
category for the first few years of our hunting careers.
We see few enough bucks, and most of these we do see
within range are shot – or shot at – within a very few
seconds of the first sighting. We are killers, not hunters.
The distinction is a subtle one, but important. A true
hunter is a person who knows, loves, and understands
the game. He is a woodsman and wildlife-watcher as well
as a marksman. To him, a whitetail buck is much more
than a mere target; it is a complex mechanism which
responds to certain stimuli and reacts to various
physical and psychological motivations within the
context of the wild world in which it lives. The more the
hunter understands the “why” and the “how” of these
responses, the more successful he will be in predicting
when and where to hunt and in selecting
a hunting technique to fit the weather and terrain.
There is more to it than simply increasing one’s success
ratio, however. There is also the matter of coming to
know and appreciate the animal, if not as
an individual, at least as a species. The better one
understands the deer, the more one can appreciate the
sense of personal accomplishment from collecting a fine
specimen under sporting, fair-chase conditions.
There are basically two ways to locate a deer. One is
simply to do the same thing – something which has
proved to work in the past – all day, every day. It takes
patience, but it will work. An example is sitting on a
known whitetail trail until a buck comes along. If it’s a
good trail, and if other hunters don’t mess it up, and if
you have the ability to sit still for a long time, you’ll
eventually get a buck by this tactic. It is, in fact, about
as reliable a way as any, if the trail is well chosen. Many
successful hunters of my acquaintance regularly collect
their venison in this manner, relying on the fact that
whitetails are essentially creatures of habit.
The other basic method of harvesting a buck is by going
to him instead of waiting for him to come to you. This
Buck Sense
may involve any of half-a-dozen techniques, such as
still-hunting, horn-rattling, cruising, and various
combinations thereof. Selection of the most promising of
these methods for any given set of circumstances
demands a fair amount of knowledge of the deer. One
must be able to make at least an educated guess as to
where, when, and why it will move (or stay put, as the
case may be), and figure in weather, wind direction,
territory, effects of hunting pressure, moon, and
progress of the rut. One must then formulate a plan and
execute it skillfully enough to make it work. Obviously,
all this requires a fairly comprehensive and accurate
body of knowledge.
Such knowledge does not come out of books or
magazine articles, or even out of the mouths of hunting
companions around the campfire. Those sources are
useful, but until you put them into actual practice, they’re
little better than theories. The one and only source of
such knowledge, in a realistic form, are the deer
themselves. One has to learn about deer from deer.
One learns almost nothing, however, from dead deer.
Therefore, the only way to begin to accumulate the
necessary understanding of the animal’s ways is to
watch live bucks in the field, which means not killing
every buck one sees immediately.
There’s more to it than merely watching deer, needless
to say. Once you have observed a buck’s behavior, you
still have to interpret what you saw and arrive at some
conclusions as to what he was up to and why. Sometimes
I’ve seen the same behavior on the part of several
different deer over a period of years before it suddenly
dawned on me what I was observing. In other words,
merely gathering data cannot make you an expert deer
hunter; the mental work of sorting, comparing,
correlating, and interpreting that data is really the hard
part. At this point in the process, those books and
articles may become invaluable, since they give you the
experiences of others with which to compare your
own observations.
Over a period of time, all this will slowly begin to take
the form of meaningful opinions. One day you’ll get up
and take a look at the predawn sky and find that you
just have a conviction about how and where you ought
to hunt that morning. It won’t be something you sat
down and figured out, but an automatic printout from
your mental computer which results from all the data
you will have put into it. Your conviction certainly won’t
prove to be correct every time, but your percentage will
improve rapidly as time goes by and can actually get to
be pretty darn good with greater experience. You may
even discover that you are the “expert” to which the
other guys in camp bring their questions.
And it all begins, oddly enough, by not shooting bucks
which you could have shot!
A secondary effect, for most of us, will be a growing
fascination with the deer and their habits as you get
to know them better. There comes a time when just
watching them is so interesting that we almost hate
to shoot one at all. Many of the very finest deer hunters
I know have this conflict in themselves, and some of
them actually kill very seldom. But when they do, the
buck is usually an outstanding trophy.
One might resolve the conflict, to some degree, by
spending a lot of time in the woods before and after the
hunting season, when there’s no question of whether or
not to kill. And, if you’re teaching a youngster to hunt,
it’s especially important to encourage him just to watch
and learn from some of the bucks he sees, to help him
avoid going through that “kill everything” phase most of
us have to conquer before we can stop being mere deer
killers and become deer hunters. – John Wootters
Shop &
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Custom Shop – For years, Leupold customers have
been sending us their scopes to make changes that suit
their specific needs. Perhaps it’s changing a reticle to
accommodate a change in shooting style, or shortening
parallax to mount a scope on a rimfire rifle. Whatever
change was needed, most customers learned about this
valuable service by word of mouth.
Today, we’re proud to officially open the Leupold Custom
Shop for business. With a menu of wide-ranging services,
we can change the features of your Leupold scope to meet
your unique shooting needs.
Reticle Changes – If you’ve decided
a particular reticle is best for you, but your
old Leupold scope doesn’t have it, or the
new Leupold scope you want doesn’t offer it,
send the scope to us. The Leupold Custom Shop can install
any of our reticles in nearly all of our scopes.
44
Choose from three sizes of Duplex ® , two Leupold Dots, a
variety of Target Dots, or even the Mil. Dot reticle to
mention just a few.
Adjustment Dials –
Adding tall, target style
adjustment knobs to your scope,
or Vari-X III 1/4-MOA click
low-profile adjustments to your
Vari-X II are just some of the
adjustment dial options you
have from the Leupold Custom Shop. We can install the
dials of your choice in almost any Leupold scope (the LPS
and BR-D models being the only exceptions). We can even
change the dials of the Vari-X III Long Range M3 to those of
the Vari-X III Long Range M1. You can have the elevation dial
alone changed, or change both, put a target-style elevation
dial and a Vari-X III style windage dial on your Vari-X II. The
combinations are many, and the choice is all yours. Call a
Leupold Product Specialist in our Customer Service
Department for specific details.
Parallax Distance Changes – Leupold scopes
that don’t feature parallax adjustment are set at the
factory for a specific parallax distance: 150 yards for
standard rifle scopes, 75 yards for shotgun models, 60
yards for rimfire scopes, etc. If the purpose you have in
mind for a scope isn’t compatible with the preset parallax
distance, the Leupold Custom Shop can change it to the
distance required. This even includes adjustments as close
as 10 meters for airgun applications.
Total Scope Renovation – Every Leupold scope
is extremely rugged, but the typical one leads a hard life.
Years of driving rain, sun exposure, heat, cold, dust, sand,
rocks, mud, riding in saddle scabbards, scraping tree
branches, and many other forms of abuse can damage the
appearance of your scope. Now it can look as good as the
day you bought it with a renovation from the Leupold
Custom Shop. We offer three types of scope renovations:
Specific, Basic, and Full Renovation.
Specific Renovation is handy when there’s just one piece
of a scope you want replaced, such as a scratched
maintube or chipped objective ring. For more extensive
work, Basic Renovation replaces the maintube, the
objective lens and ocular lens. To really make your scope
like new, you’ll want the Full Renovation. We replace the
maintube, objective and ocular lenses, and all exterior
parts. If you want your Leupold to look as good outside as
it works inside, give Leupold’s Custom Shop a call.
Sending A Product To The Leupold
