REIGNING PREMIERS SHOT DOWN BY FLAMES
CRIPPS AND CAVALIERS ENJOY STRONG PERFORMANCES
While Cripps Waratah continued its undefeated season run with a strong win against Kingston Blues
(38 to 26) reigning premiers Lexus Arrows had a bad day at the office coming off second best to
Karana Flames Friday night at Aurora Southern Stadium.
With both teams contesting control going goal for goal in the first half, Arrows looked a chance to
snap the lead with a five-goal break but could not sustain the position from an aggressive Karana
who fought back to be three goals up heading into the third quarter.
Despite great form from Arrows’ captain Kate Costelloe who scored at an impressive 78% accuracy
fed by Katelyn Fryett in wing attack, player of the match Karana’s Zoe Crawford led the ferocious
charge in goal defence missing few opportunities to turn the play around allowing Karana to convert
on strong intercepts.
Arrows’ speed and discipline was overpowered by a fast and furious Flames’ strategy that inspired
player confidence as the game progressed to take the win by seven goals (57/50).
Northern Hawks’ experience and defensive-style play was too robust for a young Burnie Tigers outfit
with key defenders Zoe Gough and Steffi Grenda fending off most opportunities for the northwest
team to score.
In the mid-court Hawks’ Ashton Whiley and Jade Woolnough found space to drive feeds to shooters
Celia Groenewegen and Danni Pickett.
Hawks’ Coach Kellie Woolnough commended Whiley and Woolnough for combining well through
speed and strong ball skills.
For the Tigers Lucy Norton and Joanne Morgan-French made sure Hawks did not have it all their own
way in the goal circle showing solid rebounding skills and defensive pressure.
Burnie played a number of younger players in key positions at either end competing well against the
Hawks who were relentless in their defence and continued to dominate the play during the second
half of the match to finish with a 25 goal win.

Country Club Cavaliers enjoyed a successful double-header defeating Launceston rival Hawks and
Devon.
Cavaliers got away to a strong lead against the Hawks with playing-coach Dannie Carstens in defence
closing down Hawks’ goal attack Chelsea Coleman while at the other end the speed of Estelle
Margetts and Cath Van Keulen proved a dynamic and lethal comibation.
In the second quarter Hawks moved Ashton Whiley to wing attack and Jade Woolnough to centre
providing numerous drives into the goal circle with Hawks’ Pickett and Coleman bringing the half
time deficit to two goals in Cavs’ favour.
The third quarter saw Hawks’ Steffi Grenda leave the court injured and Cavaliers took full advantage
with Kelsie Rainbow and Kate Gibson providing plenty of opportunities for Margetts and Van Keulen
to secure an 11 goal lead.
In the final quarter Cavs’ defenders Claire Nitschke and Carstens made numerous intercepts to close
down the Hawks attack and run out to a strong 49/38 win.
Cavaliers’ Cath Van Keulen was named player of the match for a strong and consistent four quarter
performance.
