Lovely Lincolnshire
With its fabulous coastal resorts, historical charm, thriving
market towns, unspoilt countryside and cultural heritage,
Lincolnshire is a varied and vibrant county; sure to keep a smile
on any visitor’s face, Reflect would like to encourage our readers
to visit this stunning region for a holiday this year.
Fabulous Coast
For a traditional seaside holiday, Lincolnshire
cannot be beaten! Head to the bustling towns
of Skegness, Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes on
the Lincolnshire Coast, where, come rain or
shine, fun is never in short supply.
Skegness is a popular choice for family holidays
with quality hotels, guest houses, bed and
breakfast accommodation and self-catering
properties. There’s also plenty of caravan and
camping parks for those looking to enjoy a
holiday on a budget.
The resort of Mablethorpe can be found just
along the coast from Skegness and boasts a
sandy Blue Flag beach, complete with its very
own sand train, as well as unique beach huts,
known as the ‘Bathing Beauties’, along the
promenade and beyond. Each one of these
huts was designed as part of the Bathing
Beauties Festival, which takes place each
September.
Historical Charm
Lincoln is a city rich in history. The cobbled
streets of Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter will
transport you back in time as you wander
through the superb historical landmarks and
amazing architecture that sets this place
apart from other cities. The stunning, gothic
cathedral dates back to 1072, and offers some
fascinating tales from the past. It’s also known for
drawing film fans from far and wide since featuring in
the 2006 box office smash the Da Vinci Code.
Lincoln Castle, built by William the Conqueror in the
late 11th Century, is also a must for anyone thinking of
visiting the city, as it houses one of only four surviving
copies of the Magna Carta. This important document,
which was drawn up in 1215, set the standard for
democracy and laws within England, and is exhibited
proudly alongside the story of its creation.
Unspoilt Countryside
Wanting an alternative to the busy city? Then head
to the coast and wider countryside for more fun,
frolics and fresh air. Golfing, fishing and horse riding
provide a more liberating and leisurely way to explore
Lincolnshire.
Ramblers are well catered for in Lincolnshire with
numerous pub, canal, nature, village, aviation, history
and even literary trails to be explored. All the paths are
well marked and the terrain is wonderfully varied.
Golfers can also make either a day or weekend of it, by
teeing off from one of Lincolnshire’s vast range of 50
golf courses. From championship standard to stunning
parkland courses, breathtaking links courses to some
truly challenging nine-hole courses, Lincolnshire has
something to suit all golfers.
Food Glorious Food
The eastern county has been leading the way in
living off the land for many years, before ‘seasonal’,
‘sustainable’ and even ‘local’ were buzz words – food
and drink in Lincolnshire is at the very heart and soul
of life.
As a rural county, Lincolnshire is the birth-place
of a number of dishes and delicacies, including:
tangy Lincolnshire Poacher cheese, coarse-ground
Lincolnshire sausages, succulent, marbled Lincoln red
beef, stuffed chine salt-cured pork filled with green
herbs, usually parsley, haslet – a type of pork loaf, also
flavoured with sage – and Plum bread.
For the freshest, finest local produce look out for the
Tastes of Lincolnshire logo at shops, places to eat and
accommodation. A Lincolnshire County Council and
European Union funded project, Tastes of Lincolnshire
encourages people to choose local food and drink.
Food produced by its members can be enjoyed
across the county in farm shops, farmhouse B&B and
guesthouses, hotels, pubs, cafes, restaurants and bars
flying the Tastes of Lincolnshire flag. For further details
project, please visit
Another Triumph For
The Lincoln Whisky Shop
Reflect Editor, Elaine Ellis, said: “I actually came
across The Lincoln Whisky Shop when looking
for a Christmas present for my dad; I was so
impressed when I saw the range of whiskies on
offer – there was no one else in mind for this
Certificate of Recognition. I hope it encourages
more readers to see for themselves the varied
and extensive range offered by The Lincoln
Whisky Shop.”
Since October 2011, The Lincoln Whisky Shop
has been under the experienced and enthusiastic
management of Nick and Cathy Ridout. Nick told
Reflect: “The Lincoln Whisky Shop started life as one
of a small chain of local off-licenses here in Lincoln,
known as Pratt’s, but in 1976, it was transformed
into the specialist whisky shop it is today. We’re the
fourth set of owners since that time and only came
across the opportunity to buy the business by chance.
We were regular customers and discovered in a
chance conversation with the previous owners that
they were selling up, so Cathy and I decided to buy
it. I’d recently retired from 35 years in the Army and
was looking for something to do. I’ve always been
interested in whisky and odd/unusual drinks and felt
that shop keeping would be a fun and interesting
way to spend a few years, so we took the plunge. I’m
loving being my own boss as well as meeting people
from all over the country who share my passion for
whisky.”
The Lincoln Whisky Shop specialise in those rare
and unusual whiskies, spirits and liqueurs that
you won’t find in your local supermarket. Nick
said: “Our core business is whisky; we sell a wide
selection of malts and blends, the sort of bottles you
can get in the supermarket but we pride ourselves
on catering to a niche market as well, selling those
unusual varieties that you won’t find elsewhere. I also
relish the challenge of finding a whisky at special
request, whether it be from a small distillery or from
a certain year to give as a gift to mark a milestone
birthday or event. I aim to please and enjoy
responding to customer requests.”
As well as whiskies, The Lincoln Whisky Shop
sells a wide selection of spirits and liqueurs and
a small range of specialist gifts, including crystal
glasses and hip flasks. There’s also a selection of
miniatures to buy, which are especially good for
sampling a new whisky before committing to a
big bottle, as well as for cooking any recipes that
require a splash of whisky.
On hearing the news of their Certificate of
Recognition for Rare & Unusual Gifts, Nick
said: “Thank you so much for this Certificate Reflect.
It’s great to have all our hard work rewarded. Whisky
is a great investment. Some people invest in artwork
or jewellery, well whisky is another good investment,
especially at the moment with interest rates so
low. As well as being a great investment, whisky
also makes a great present, especially for anyone
celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary. I
strive to offer my customers exactly what they’re
looking for; and if I don’t have it, I will endeavour to
get it for them.”
Sunday 11am until 3pm from April to December only
Online ordering is available from www.lincolnwhiskyshop.co.uk
If you’re searching for the perfect place to buy
a loved one an unusual gift for their birthday
in 2012, Reflect would like to recommend the
range of whiskies on offer from The Lincoln
Whisky Shop, which dates back to 1976.
With such an extensive range, The Lincoln
Whisky Shop was the obvious choice for our
Certificate of Recognition for Rare &
Unusual Gifts.
Derek said: “Dad started this shop as he was working all
the hours he could for very little reward as a Co-Op manager,
so he decided to set up on his own and work for himself, be
his own boss. I left school and started working here in 1970
and plan to be here until I retire in eight years time. There’s
no-one in the family to take over from me, but hopefully I
can sell the business to ensure the H.E. Wilkinson name can
continue to serve the community of Cherry Willingham and
beyond for many years to come.”
Stocking a huge range of locally produced and sourced
beef, lamb and pork, H.E. Wilkinson & Son strive to offer
their customers reasonable prices and high quality meats
With a history of farming stretching back 400
years, the Ownsworth family began selling
their cold pressed extra virgin rapeseed oil
throughout Leicestershire, Lincolnshire,
Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Staffordshire
two years ago.
Reflect spoke to Andrew Ownsworth, who said: “In
2001, my wife Ronnie (Veronica) and I moved our family
from Yorkshire to Lincolnshire, where we successfully
gained the tenancy of a 1,400-acre mixed arable
and stock farm in Fulbeck. We spent the next decade
altering and improving systems on the new farm, but
with increases in farm input costs, fuel, wages and rent
increases and unpredictable world commodity prices,
our income from the cereal and stock business made
life tough; we looked at ways to diversify. We planted
a 4,000 grape vineyard, part of which is grown within
a walled garden – we hope to have a rosé (pink) wine
available from May. We also renovated a beautiful
period cottage at the vineyard for self-catering holiday
A True Taste Of Lincolnshire
From H.E. Wilkinson & Son
Situated in the picturesque village of Cherry Willingham in Lincoln, H.E. Wilkinson & Son is a family-run
butchers that dates back to 1965. Founded by Bert Wilkinson, H.E. Wilkinson & Son is now in the capable
hands of Bert’s son Derek.
with a friendly service. Derek explained: “We get as much
of our meat as we can from local sources, local farmers
around the area, as well as bigger names including Browns
& Sons and Wrights of Boston. We have been getting our
pork from the same farmer since 1968. We’ve built up some
excellent connections locally and know where all our products
have come from – we can track them from field to plate and
I think our customers value that knowledge and trust.”
H.E. Wilkinson & Son stock a wide range of sausages
(including traditional Lincolnshire, pork and apple, pork
and leek, beef and tomato), burgers (including pork and
apple, plain beef and minty lamb) and joints, as well as
accommodation. However, our biggest and most
successful diversification project is our rape seed oil.”
Stocked in over 40 outlets, including local farm shops,
delis, butchers and bakers, Ownsworth’s Rape Seed
Oil has a great taste and a subtle earthy, nutty but not
overpowering flavour, which makes it a really versatile
addition to any kitchen. Andrew added: “Ownsworth’s
Rape Seed Oil information leaflets have been produced
and recipe brochures are always being circulated for
customers. We find that our customers love to ‘meet
their farmer’ and ask how their oil was produced; Ronnie
and I are always happy to chat to them and find the
feedback very useful.”
Ownsworth’s Rape Seed Oil is supplied in 250ml,
500ml, 5 litres and 25 litres (suitable for the catering
trade). Rape Seed Oil only contains 6.5g of saturated
fat compared to olive oil at 15.5g of saturated fat
meaning it’s great for anyone trying to cut down on
their fat and eat a healthier diet.
a selection of cooked meats, including ham, roast beef,
roast pork and their award-winning Haslet.
Every other year, H.E. Wilkinson & Son enter some
of their products in a local poacher competition held
at Lincolnshire Showground to judge their meat, as
Derek explained: “I started entering our products in this
competition about six years ago and we’ve had a very good
success rate – we always seem to come away with three or
four gold awards, as well as a handful of silver and bronze
awards. Our Haslet is a gold award winner. I’m planning on
entering some of our products into this year’s competition in
September.”
Open from 8am until 5:30pm (closed for lunch from
1pm until 2pm) everyday, including Sunday, there’s
no reason not to see the wide range of products on
offer for yourself. For more information, please call
01522 751120 or pop into 7 The Parade, Cherry
Willingham, Lincoln LN3 4JL.
Ownsworth Rape Seed Oil: The Pure & Natural Choice
Made using Ownsworth Rape Seed oil,
no hard fat required
Ownsworth’s Rape Seed Oil is fully traceable back to
the Ownsworth farm, even to the exact field the seed
was grown in and there are no air miles. The oil is also
GM-free and healthy Omegas 3, 6 and 9.
Andrew added: “Our oil is very popular and can be
purchased from over 40 outlets as well as directly from
us. If you’d like to know where your nearest stockist is,
feel free to give us a call; if there’s nowhere near you
locally that stocks it, we’re happy for you to order a
bottle or two directly from us.”
Award-Winning Real Ales From Grafters Brewery
seriously considered starting my own brewery and producing my own ales. I did an
‘Introduction to Brewing’ course at Sunderland University, bought some equipment,
altered my garage and I was off. Two weeks after completing the alterations on the
garage, my ale was on the pumps at The Half Moon.”
Grafters Brewery have enjoyed phenomenal success since their creation in 2007.
In the first year, they won a Gold and Silver award at the Peterborough Beer
Festival, the biggest outdoor beer festival in the UK, with their ale ‘Traditional’.
Phil said: “Our first brew was named ‘Traditional’ and it does exactly what it says
on the tin; it won Gold in the ‘Best Beer From A New Brewery’ category in 2008 at
the Peterborough Beer Festival. Our second ale, ‘Moonlight’, is much lighter than
‘Traditional’ and more refreshing – it was created specifically with summer beer
gardens in mind. That’s actually the ale that’s won us the most awards. At the 2009
Peterborough Beer Festival, we won Gold in the ‘Best Bitters Under 4%’ category as
well as being named the Championship ale of the whole festival, beating 500 others.
The following year, we won Gold again in the ‘Best Bitters Under 4%’ category. It’s
nice to know our fellow brewers, as well as our customers, enjoy what we brew.”
success.
When the show was launched just three years ago, it
covered a modest 40,000 square feet; it now boasts an
exhibition area of 160,000 square feet that’s easy to
navigate. In 2011, shooting enthusiasts in their tens of
thousands came from all over the UK and abroad and
created a real ‘buzz’ of an atmosphere over both days
of the show and 2012 looks to be just as good, if not
better. Many new features were added for the 2011
show and organisers are working hard to add even
more for 2012.
Highlights include:
• Gunmakers Halls
• Airgun City
• Arms Heritage
• Rifle Focus
• Rifle Target Shooting
• Scopes, Sights & Optics - the widest choice from the
world’s leading manufacturers
• Ammunition & Reloading
• Gamekeeping Hall
• Clay Shooting & Sporting Competition
• English Gunmaking Heritage
• Gun Dog Hall & Scurries - clinic, training
demonstrations and scurries
• And more!
Brewed onsite at The Half Moon pub in Willingham-by-Stow (near Gainsborough
in Lincolnshire), Grafters Brewery produce eleven varieties of award-winning real
ale, which can be enjoyed in numerous locations across Lincolnshire, as well as
at home.
Established in November 2007, Grafters Brewery is the brainchild of experienced
publican Phil Troope, who started his micro-brewery in an attempt to attract
more customers to his pub. Phil explained: “Towards the end of 2007, I noticed
that our pub, as well as other pubs in the area, had become quiet, people were no
longer visiting as often, so I wanted to do something to attract them back, without
going down the food route. The Half Moon is a traditional pub that’s always served a
handful of real ales by local producers; however, it wasn’t until I had a conversation,
and a tour of his brewery, with Phil Ellis from Fulstow Brewery in Loth that I
Grafters Brewery produce eleven different varieties of their real ale, ranging from
3.6% ABV to 5.2% ABV; there are so many different colours and flavours you’re
bound to find one you like. You can sample a pint of Grafters real ale at The Half
Moon pub, as well as a number of other pubs in Lincolnshire. However, it can also
be purchased in bottles and boxes (5, 10 and 20 litre boxes) to enjoy at home.
To order some of Grafters’ ales for yourself, please call
Phil on 01427 788340 or visit www.graftersbrewery.com
Two-hour brewery tours can also be arranged for a
minimum of eight people. Tours cost £20 per head – call
or email Phil (phil@graftersbrewery.com) to arrange
a visit.
supports Reflect Magazine
13
Follow the BEAT of
your Heart for
National Heart Month
Be Active
Being active is vital to keeping your heart regularly
exercised, like any part of the body the fitter you are
the more efficiently the body works. The BHF suggests
setting yourself realistic goals that are specific and
achievable. Also involving friends and family will mean
that activities can be more fun, sociable and most
importantly, enjoyable.
Eat Healthily
What we eat doesn’t only affect our waistlines, what we
eat is also important for our heart health. A healthy,
balanced diet will provide you with all the nutrients
that your body needs. Try to vary the types of fruit and
vegetables that you eat and aim to have at least five
a day. Cut down as much as possible on salt and
saturated fat in foods like meat, cheese, pastry and
chocolate and instead choose the unsaturated fats for
example from rapeseed, sunflower and olive oils and
spreads; and oily fish.
Avoid Smoking
Smoking is one of the major risk factors of heart disease
and the habit can damage your heart in a worrying
number of ways. But, you can kick the habit! Start off by
setting a date for giving up and stick to it, get support
from family and friends and use the money you save to
treat yourself to something special!
encouraging you to do. It can be a touch of red for
those who want to be more alluring or it could be a
full blown outfit dedicated to the ‘emotionally-intense’
colour. With a suggested donation of just £1, women,
men and children around the country will make a big
difference in beating the UK’s biggest killer on National
Wear Red Day.
It’s also a leap year this year, which means there is an
extra day which you can use to help the nation’s hearts.
The bonus day could be used for a Wear Red Day if you
can’t fit it in on the 24th but, if red isn’t your thing, there
are other ways of getting involved and sharing the love.
You can pen the person you love a Love Note for a
suggested donation of £1 and have it posted in one of
BHF’s shop windows for all to see! What’s more, any
women thinking of taking advantage of the leap year
can use the heart-shaped notes as the perfect way to
pop the question. Alternatively, buy your loved one a
gift such as a Sweetheart Hot Water Bottle or Heart
Cufflinks – there is a whole array of heart-warming gifts
at BHF’s online shop, which can be found at
http://giftshop.bhf.org.uk
This is the BHF’s fourth annual Red for Heart fundraising
campaign and they’ve had strong celebrity support in
the past from Gemma Atkinson and Kate Nash. For
February is National Heart Month
and the British Heart Foundation
(BHF) is asking the nation to follow
its simple BEAT code to make
steps towards a healthier heart:
The BEAT Code
Be active
Eat healthily
Avoid smoking
Take the free lifestyle check
It is a common misperception that heart
disease is more common in men than
women when in fact it kills one in three
women, as well as one in three men
and kills three times more women than
breast cancer. What better time than
in National Heart Month to follow the
BEAT code’s simple steps to help keep
hearts healthy?
Take The Free Lifestyle Check
The BHF has developed a free online lifestyle check to
help you identify areas of your lifestyle that you may
need to work on to help keep your heart healthy. So
you can make positive and significant changes to your
lifestyle not only for February but for the rest of your
life. The check is quick and easy to fill out and covers
lifestyle questions such as your eating habits, physical
activity and smoking habits. When you’re finished, you’ll
get a personalised report with tips and support on how
to improve your lifestyle and areas that you might want
to focus on. To help you get started, you can use the
goal setting guide to set realistic and achievable goals.
You can keep a copy of your report or even print out a
copy for your doctor, in case you want to take it along
to your next GP appointment, or you can call the BHF
heart helpline on 0300 330 3311 if you need support.
You can take the lifestyle check regularly as it’s a great
way to see if the changes you are making are having a
positive effect.
Look Red Hot & Save Lives
Turn heads, warm hearts and wear red on
Friday 24th February for the BHF’s National Wear Red
Day. As part of National Heart Month, the nation’s heart
charity is calling on the UK to brush down their red
dresses, shake out their red locks or even unlock their
most precious Louboutins to help raise valuable money
for its fight against heart disease.
A famous fashion designer once said ‘when in
doubt, wear red’ and that’s exactly what the BHF is
How Your Money Helps
Every penny raised by the BHF is put towards
groundbreaking research, as well as providing people
with the knowledge they need to live healthier lives
and reduce their risk of heart disease. This is how your
donations can help…
£10 – provides 25 people with a heart information
booklet which can help equip individuals with the tools
they need to understand and deal with their illness.
£24 – is the amount needed to provide a heart patient
and their family with an hour of specialist care from a
BHF Heart Nurse.
£124 – can buy a ‘Little Anne’, an adult mannequin
used in CPR training, which more than doubles an
individual’s chances of survival when performed
following a cardiac arrest.
£250 – allows the BHF to buy one hand held ECG
machine, which records the heart’s rhythm and can be
used by individuals in their own homes to monitor their
hearts.
£500 – goes towards helping fund the work of one
cardiac nurse on the BHF Heart Helpline, who in turn
can provide heart patients with information on their
condition and the best ways to manage it.
£1,000 – can be used to cover the cost of life saving
equipment, such as a portable defibrillator and CPR
training equipment.
15
The Perfect Packed Lunch
by Laura Hyde
The start of a new year inspires us all to eat healthy,
but healthy eating shouldn’t be a novelty, it should be
a lifestyle choice, something you commit to, for your
health as well as the health of your children. If figures
from the school measuring programme (released in
late-2011) are to be believed, a staggering one in
five children (18.7%) leave primary school obese; this
figure rises dramatically, to 33.4%, when overweight
11-year-olds are taken into account.
So, what can you do to reduce the chances of your child becoming
another obesity statistic - well, you could start by taking a look at their
packed lunch. According to The School Food Trust, parents are failing
to put enough fruit and veg into their children’s packed lunches. The
Trust looked at 3,500 packed lunches in England in 2009 and discovered
that about 40% of lunchboxes do not contain any fruit or vegetables,
compared with just 10% of school dinners.
Packed lunches are currently typically higher in saturated fat, sugar and
salt, and often contain foods that can’t be provided by schools in their
school lunches, such as sweets and salted snacks. Ensuring parents make
healthy packed lunches that give children the variety they need in their
diet, takes a lot of time and effort, but time and effort that’ll be rewarded,
for both parent and child. Reflect understand that it’s not financially
practical to follow the Trust’s advice to switch to school meals, but how
do you ensure your child is getting the best packed lunch possible.
The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has set up an online game
website to give parents advice on healthier lunchboxes -
www.greatgrubclub.com/my-packed-lunch helps you design and plan
nutritious, tasty and interesting lunchboxes thanks to the interactive
meal planner.
The WCRF credit celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver, with transforming school
meals and feel the same sort of changes are now needed for children
who bring lunch from home; the nutritional content of school canteen
meals has improved drastically so now attention is turning to the
healthiness of the content of lunchboxes, which the WCRF feel has been
left behind. Their online game not only gives parents and children ideas
for foods that are both healthy and tasty, but also encourages parents
to ensure lunchboxes include at least two portions of fruit and veg. The
WCRF don’t want to tell parents what to do and what not to feed their
children, but they hope their online game will advise parents about the
different healthy options that are available, cheap and easy to prepare.
Healthy Lunch Options
It’s all too easy to give your child the same lunch each and every day, but
by keeping lunches varied, you’re less likely to get bored…
Sandwich Fillings
• Chicken with a low-fat dressing and salad
• Grated cheese and pickle
• Bacon, lettuce and tomato
• Tuna and tomato
• Salmon and cucumber
• Hummus and red pepper
• You could try any of
these in a pitta, on a
tortilla, in a chapattis
or crusty rolls or even
on a bagel if you or
your children start to
grow bored of bread
– just make sure it’s
wholemeal.
Alternatives
• Soup with wholegrain bread – easy to make recipes include butternut
squash and red pepper, vegetable and mushroom soup
• Cous cous with roasted vegetables and chickpeas
• Wholegrain pasta salad with tomatoes, green beans and sweetcorn in
green pesto sauce
• Rice salad with turkey
• Low-fat cream cheese on wholegrain cracker with grapes
• Pizza fingers x3
• Spanish Omelette
• Crustless vegetable quiche
Snacks
• Carrot and cucumber sticks
• Cherry tomatoes
• Dried fruits
• Fresh fruit
• Cheese cubes
• Pot of yoghurt
• Hard-boiled egg
• Nuts or seeds (unsalted)
• Slice of fruit loaf or malt loaf
• Seeded flapjack
• Chocolate bran flake slice
• Low-fat rice pudding pot
• Uniced fruit cake
• Strawberry trifle
Drinks
• Semi-skimmed milk
• Water
• Pure apple/orange juice
(limit to once a week due to
sugar content)
• Blackberry smoothie
You can get more healthy
and tasty lunch ideas online.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/
treatments/healthy_living/
nutrition/life_children.shtml
• If you struggle to get your kids to eat fruit and veg, why not try:
• Chopping fruit into bite-sized chunks and thread onto skewers to
create colourful and tempting kebab
• Adding red kidney beans or chickpeas to Bolognese, chilli or curries
• Combining fresh fruit and jelly
• Incorporating vegetables diced or sliced (such as pepper and carrots)
to pizzas and wraps
• Adding carrots, parsnips, peas or spring onions to mashed potato
• Using pureed or stewed fruit as a
topping for desserts or swirl into
low-fat plain yogurt
• Adding raisins, dried apricots or
other dried fruit to rice or cous cous
to make interesting and delicious
meals
For more information on The School
Food Trust and how you can create
the perfect packed lunch for your
child, please visit
www.schoolfoodtrust.org.uk
It’s not just children who will benefit from healthy packed lunches;
parents can also reap the health benefits of making their own packed
lunch and taking it into work. As well as the health benefits, there are
staggering financial gains too. If you spend £5 a day on lunch, that adds
up to £25 a month, which in turn can add up to £1,200 a year – that’s a
staggering amount to spend on food that’s not too healthy for you. By
making your own lunch every day for the next year and saving the £5 you’d
usually spend, you can enjoy flaunting your new healthy and toned body
on a luxury holiday!
Did You Know?
• In 2008, only 19% of children
got five or more portions of fruit
each day.
• Frozen and tinned (in juice not
syrup) count towards your five
fruit and veg a day.
• Strawberries are very high
in vitamin C, potassium, and
antioxidants.
• Obesity currently costs the
country around £2 billion
annually.
• 35% of an adult’s daily
requirement of vitamin C can be
found in a medium-sized potato,
but 100% can be found in a
medium-sized kiwi fruit.
• Last year, a study from the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth revealed
that one in ten parents expressed some concern about their child being
underweight when they were actually a normal, healthy weight; and 33%
of mums and 57% of dads considered their child’s weight to be ‘about right’
when, in fact, they were obese.
• Tomatoes are a good source of vitamins A and C.
• There is more fibre in an orange than in most other fruits and veggies.

decide upon a prefer date to tie the knot. Do you see yourself
as a summer or spring bride? Maybe even a winter bride –
whatever season you choose, the best venues get booked up
years in advance, so if you have your heart set on a particular
venue, you may have to be flexible with the date.
Step 2 - Work out your budget
With the average wedding costing around £18,500, it’s easy to
get carried away when planning your wedding, but by setting
your budget early on, you can avoid spending more than you
can afford. If you do overspend in one area, work out ways to
economise in other areas.
Step 3 - Choose your venue
The venue you choose for your wedding day all depends on the
type of ceremony you’d like. A marriage ceremony is basically
the same whether you opt for a religious or civil affair: it’s a
public declaration of your love for one another and it will give
you new legal status as husband and wife. Many brides dream
of a traditional white wedding, in church with all the trimmings,
whilst others dream of declaring their love in an ancient castle,
a charming country estate or a contemporary city hotel.
A survey, carried out by Condé Nast Brides Magazine in
2009, discovered the average couple will spend £1,679 on a
ceremony venue and a further £3,500 on a reception venue;
if you’d like to cut this figure, the advice is not to tie the knot
on a traditional summer Saturday date and opt for a weekday
wedding or a winter date, where prices can lower by up to 50%.
It can be overwhelming to know exactly where to start
planning your big day, so we would like to recommend
attending a wedding fair. The National Wedding Show
brings together over 250 exhibitors and the UK’s largest
collection of wedding dresses under one roof. Taking place
at London Kensington Olympia from February 24th to 26th
and Birmingham NEC from March 16th to 18th, The National
Wedding Show 2012 promises to be bigger and better
than ever. Visit www.nationalweddingshow.co.uk for more
information, or to buy tickets.
The Cotswold Jeweller Ltd
Classic & Contemporary Jewellery Collections
Established in 2005, The Cotswold Jeweller
provides a custom design service for anyone
looking for that unique piece of jewellery
or wedding band. Established by Duncan
Hastings, The Cotswold Jeweller is the
culmination of 30 years of experience in the
jewellery trade. Reflect decided to have a chat
with Duncan to find out more…
Why did you establish The Cotswold
Jeweller?
“I’ve always been in the jewellery trade, mainly
in Oxford before moving here to Warwickshire,
but after over 20 years working for other
people, or with other people, I decided the time
was right to strike out on my own and create
something new.”
What does The Cotswold Jeweller offer?
“I’d say we offer those classic traditional English
pieces of jewellery that everyone loves to
have, alongside a wide range of modern and
contemporary jewellery at reasonable prices. We
also take on commission work, allowing us to
custom make and design any piece of jewellery;
in the past we’ve made all kinds of unusual
and wonderful items, including jewellery for
body piercings as well as the more traditional
wedding bands. Our saving grace in these tough
economic times is that we’re flexible. We also
have a gift gallery next door, which, although
there’s no connecting door, is very much part of
The Cotswold Jeweller business. Here customers
can buy bronzes and an array of glass and
silverware. We look small from the outside, but
when customers step inside, they’re blown away
by the size of the shop and the array of stock
we have.”
What makes The Cotswold Jeweller different
from other jewellers?
“We’re not your average, run-of-the-mill county
jewellers; we stock a fantastic range of modern
jewellery alongside classic pieces from as little
as £10. The only way really see for yourself is
Nicky’s Cakes: Tasty & Delicious
As every bride will know, there are so many
details to consider when planning your
perfect wedding day, which is why Reflect
would like to recommend the expertise and
experience of Nicky Haines, from Nicky’s
Cakes, to create your perfect wedding cake.
Nicky told Reflect: “I’ve been making cakes
all my life; I left school and went straight into
a bakery - I suppose you could say it’s my
life’s passion. I spent 12 years working for my
brother in his bakery but decided two years
ago that it was time to branch out on my
own. I was tired of working for other people
and wanted to be my own boss. I took the
plunge and started Nicky’s Cakes and I’ve
never looked back – it’s been amazing.”
Offering a range of cakes, including
traditional sponge, rich fruit cake, lemon,
carrot, chocolate, coffee and even Irish
cream (which uses Bailey’s), Nicky home
cooks and hand makes each delicious
cake, whether it’s for your wedding day,
birthday and anniversary parties or child’s
christening.
“I pride myself on listening to exactly what
my customer wants,” Nicky explained, “after
all, it’s their cake and their special occasion.
I try to meet all my customers face-to-face
to discuss their requirements, but when
that’s not possible, telephone and email are
satisfactory. We’ll discuss their ideas for their
cake, what their budget is, how many people
the cake needs to feed and any design ideas
they may have. I strive to offer a personalised
service and each customer will only ever
deal with me, as I’m the one who will
make the cake. I aim to provide affordable,
home-crafted alternatives to pre-packed
supermarket cakes. My focus is on what my
customer wants as without them, I have no
business.”
Tough economic times have caused us all to tighten
our belts and adopt the thrifty attitude seen across
Britain during World War II. If you’re one of the many
who are having to ‘make do and mend’ when it comes
to their clothes but have little to no sewing skills, Reflect
would like to recommend the talents of alterations
extraordinaire, Julie Manning at Friargate Alterations
in Derby. Established in 1979, Friargate Alterations
provides an exceptional repair and alterations service.
Friargate Alterations
Awarded Certificate of Recognition
With so many years of experience and with such a
passion for clothes, Reflect have awarded Friargate
Alterations with a Certificate of Recognition for Quality
& Service. Reflect Editor Elaine Ellis says: “The last few
years have been financially tough for many of us; we’re
no longer available to replace our damaged or worn out
clothes as easily as before, which is why the talent and
experience of someone like Julie are invaluable. I hope this
Certificate encourages more Reflect readers to seek her out
and add a whole new dimension to their wardrobe.”
Julie’s career started at Co-op Tailors in Derby as she
explained: “I worked for the Co-op for ten years before it
closed and started Friargate Alterations soon after. I felt
the closure of Co-op Tailors left a gap in the market for an
alternations service in the heart of Derby. The last 30 years
have had their ups and downs but the last couple of years
have been really busy with people trying to save every
penny they can.”
On hearing the news of her Certificate of Recognition,
Julie said: “Thank you so much Reflect, this is a great
start to the year. I’ve always enjoyed sewing and altering
clothes, so I don’t really see this as a job. I’m fortunate
enough to do something I love for a living.”
For more information or to discuss your alteration requirements,
please call 01332 722367
Julie offers alterations on every item of clothing you can
think of, from shortening or lengthening jacket sleeves
to taking in, or out, dresses, including bridesmaid
dresses and bridal gowns. Julie said: “I was really busy in
2011 with brides who needed their dresses altering. Many
of them had found a bargain, either from a sample sale or
from eBay, which obviously didn’t fit them as a wedding
dress should. I found myself taking a lot of dresses both
in and out last wedding season. Turnaround of garments
varies, I can turn wedding dresses around in about a month
but I do get very busy, so once you decide that you want
your dress altered it’s best to come and see me so I can see
what needs doing and
get you booked in.”
Friargate Alterations
is open Mondays,
Tuesdays, Wednesday
mornings, Thursdays,
Fridays and Saturdays:
Treboeth Guesthouse 19
An Island Oasis At
Treboeth Guesthouse, Scilly
Located off the southwest tip of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly are
a small group of islands boasting a relaxed attitude, a unique
environment and acres of natural landscape. These charming
islands may be small in stature, but they boast a milder climate
than mainland Britain, a wealth of unique attractions and
utterly breathtaking scenery, making them the perfect place for a
holiday at any time of the year.
A Venue Fit For
A Princess, And Her Prince
Overlooking the southwest shores of St Mary’s, Treboeth Guesthouse offers holidaymakers home-fromhome
traditional bed and breakfast accommodation in the heart of the island’s action. Family-run since the
1950s, Treboeth Guesthouse is well-equipped for family holidays with five rooms: three en-suite doubles,
one en-suite family room and a single room with private bathroom, some of which boast fabulous views
of the crystal clear waters surrounding the island. All rooms feature a TV and hospitality tray, including tea,
coffee and hot chocolate, and there is a comfy guest lounge with Sky TV. Wi-Fi is available and well-behaved
dogs are welcome.
Promising to set you up for a full day’s exploration, a Treboeth breakfast caters for all tastes and appetites.
Guests are welcome to feast upon a selection of cereals, yoghurt, fruit, toast and tea and coffee, before
tucking into a filling full English or cooked breakfast.
Owner, Marlene Burton, is very proud of Treboeth Guesthouse and having helped so many families discover
everything the Isles of Scilly has to offer over the years, she says: “We’re very family orientated and promise a
homely atmosphere and great breakfasts. Treboeth is also in a central location for attractions and eating out
– the quay is just a five-minute walk away and the shops are even closer.”
Scilly is made up of five inhabited islands and each one is unique in terms of character, charm and
attractions, so whether you’re seeking soft white sands on which to sunbathe or the opportunity to discover
somewhere new, the Isles of Scilly have it all.
The largest of the islands, St Mary’s is known as Scilly’s hub and is teeming with both modern and ancient
attractions. From burial chambers to monuments, 16th Century castles to old-fashioned villages, budding
historians will love the sites on offer here. If you’re itching to stretch your legs, why not take a wander along
one of the island’s coastal paths which cover 30 miles and promise panoramic views.
St Mary’s is equipped with excellent facilities for a wide range of sports, including tennis and squash, whilst
those seeking a brand new experience can get out on the water and have a go at windsurfing. There are also
a delightful range of independent shops, restaurants and art galleries throughout the whole island, while
the Old Town area has many historic gems to admire.
Looking for the perfect intimate wedding venue can
be a difficult task, which is why Reflect would like to
present to bride and grooms-to-be The Hill, a stunning
17th Century property that’s available for private hire
throughout the year for weddings, birthday parties,
christenings and naming ceremonies for up to 110 people,
as well as business meetings and seminars.
Built in 1634, The Hill is about to embark on an extensive
interior refurbishment that will restore some of the
buildings original features, enhancing its character.
Manager, Mike Hill, told Reflect: “We’ve been here for about
six years now and in that time have not really done anything
internally to improve the building, so we felt it was about time.
The Hill has been used for private hire for some years but
we’re looking to give it a face lift and create that exclusive
intimate atmosphere that today’s brides and grooms crave. By
the end of April, we hope to have the refurbishment complete,
just in time for our peak wedding season, which starts in May.”
The Hill is licensed for civil ceremonies and anyone hiring
the venue for an event gets exclusive use of the ground
floor of the property, so couples can rest assured theirs
will be the only wedding and they won’t have to worry
about running into another bride, or their guests getting
lost. Mike said: “If you choose The Hill, your reception can
slip seamlessly into an evening of dancing, with food and
refreshments as required; alternatively, you and your guests
can come here following a church or registry office ceremony.
We also have a fully licensed bar available exclusively for you
and your guests, and the facilities for a marquee outside in our
extensive picturesque grounds; however, we’re not licensed to
conduct wedding ceremonies outdoors.”
These idyllic gardens provide the perfect back-drop for
wedding photographs thanks to ancient trees and 17th
Century architecture evoking the romance of a bygone
era for your special day.
When it comes to food, The Hill caters for up to 80
people in a traditional wedding breakfast set up with
round tables, or 110 people in a more formal banquet set
up; all the catering is done in-house and the experienced
and talented chefs can create a menu to suit you, whether
you want an exclusive banquet or a simple finger buffet.
Hog roasts and barbecues are also available. Mike said:
“Our Head Chef specialises in designing individual delicious
menus, from four-course silver service to delicate finger buffets
and exquisite, handmade wedding cakes, everything we make
is created with care and attention to detail for your special
day.”
Prices start from £24 per head and packages can be
tailor-made to suit your requirements and budget. Drinks
packages start from £15 per head for arrival drinks,
celebration (toast) drinks and half a bottle of wine per
guest on the wedding breakfast tables. Mike added: “We
can tailor make a package to suit the individual couple, but for
a wedding of 50 people for a sit down three-course meal and
a toast drink can cost as little as £2,000. We pride ourselves
on being very flexible, as well as having the knowledge and
skills to create the perfect day, and not just where the venue
and food and drink are concerned. We can arrange as much
of the big day as a couple wants; in the past we’ve also
arranged chair covers, balloons and a wedding cake. We’re very
approachable and work with the client from start to finish to
ensure their day is perfect and exactly what they’d wish for.”
For those considering The Hill for a business meeting
or seminar, audio and visual equipment is in-place for
conferencing, speakers and presentations.
If we’ve whet your appetite and you’d like to see the
facilities on offer at The Hill, please call 01453 764771
or email mike@occasionsatthehill.co.uk
Marlene says: “With the whole of the Isles of Scilly
designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the
best way to soak up the stunning scenery is to explore it on
foot. The walking opportunities around St Mary’s and its
neighbouring islands are spectacular, with the dramatic
cliffs of Peninnis Head, hidden coves and miles of glorious
golden sands to wander and admire. There are numerous
boat trips that will allow you to see St Mary’s beauty from
a different perspective, as well as offering the chance to
discover its siblings; my top recommendations are visits to
Tresco’s Abbey Garden and a gentle walk along St Martin’s
Great Bay and Little Bay.”
Reflect believe that this warm and welcoming B&B
offers a comfortable and memorable stay in the
heart of the island’s action, which is why, last year, we
selected them for our Certificate of Recognition for
Island Getaways.
Treboeth welcomes guests from the start of April to the end of October for £35 to £40 pppn.
If you’re looking for a holiday location that boasts a unique atmosphere and
offers a taste of a different way of life, then a trip to the Channel Islands is a must
this year. A small collection of islands situated in the English Channel, close
to France’s northwest coast, the Channel Islands provide a beautiful blend of
English and French charm.
A compact piece of land covering 45 square miles, Jersey is the largest of
the Channel Islands and the ultimate location for those looking to give their
traditional beach break an exotic twist. Its rich history and wealth of fascinating
stories – that cover more than a thousand years – make it a getaway popular
with budding historians. The site of battles, exploration, struggles and
reinvention, Jersey’s complex history has left a lasting legacy and created an
exciting place for visitors to explore.
Ideal for families who want to enjoy a wide range of attractions, the Jersey Pass
is the very best way to see what the island has to offer, whilst saving money.
Granting you access to a whole host of attractions, this great deal has been
designed to offer something for everyone and includes 16 historical sites,
museums and family activities across the island.
Alternatively, head north to picturesque Cumbria where you’ll find quaint towns,
breathtaking scenery and action-packed activities for all ages. England’s second
largest county, Cumbria was formed when the old counties of Cumberland,
Westmorland, and part of North Lancashire came together. The county’s biggest
attraction is the Lake District National Park, which covers an area of around
30 miles. The Lakes also contain England’s highest mountains (four over 3000
ft), and some of England’s largest lakes. All this makes it the perfect place for
walkers, birdwatchers, sailors and watersports enthusiasts, adrenaline junkies,
and couples, both young and old, wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of
city life.
Cumbria is jam-packed with exciting and inspiring days out, no matter what
you’re interested in. Extremely popular tourist destinations include Hadrian’s
Wall, The River Eden, The Settle-Carlisle Railway, Beatrix Potter Gallery, and many
more.
For more ideas on holidaying in Great Britain, please visit www.visitbritain.com
With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games taking
place this year, the eyes of the world are on Great Britain. The national tourism agency,
VisitBritain, has predicted that the UK should attract 30.7 million visitors in 2012 who will
spend £17.6 billion during their stay.
If a holiday in good ol’ Blighty is good enough for our foreign counterparts, it’s good
enough for us, so we’re here to encourage you to forgo your annual holiday abroad for a
fun-filled break on our fair isle this summer…
Despite it only being late January,
Reflect have already come across some
great companies this year, some of
which may be very familiar to you,
others of which will be brand new. The
companies within this feature offer
their customers the whole package:
high quality products and competitive
prices, as well as an excellent and
personal service.
We search high and low, across the
length and breadth of the UK to bring
you the best companies each and every
week. The companies within this feature
offer their customers the whole package:
high quality products and competitive
prices, as well as an excellent and
personal service.
Today, there are thousands of companies
who promise the world and, with the
Internet making it easy for less discerning
companies to appear legitimate,
searching for a good company can be
a minefield. This minefield has been
made significantly worse thanks to
the recession and following economic
instability, as it’s now harder than ever
to know who to trust with your money.
As so many companies, both small,
independent businesses and multinational
corporations, have gone into
administration in the last three years,
including the recent spate of High Street
retailers (namely Peacocks and Past
Times), many of us are wary about how
we spend our cash.
Many companies across the country
have suffered the effects of the recession,
but it’s our local businesses that have
been hit hardest. Without the financial
backup of a parent company, with a
chain of businesses, they are finding it
tough to keep afloat. However, there
are ways that you can help your local,
independent businesses survive. By
choosing to shop or employ the services
of local companies, you can help them
to flourish. You may also find that
choosing local is to your benefit, as you
are treated to a more personal service.
The companies within this feature offer
their customers the whole package: high
quality products and competitive prices,
as well as an excellent and personal
service.
Although these companies are offering
different things, the factors that lead to
success remain the same, good customer
service, reliability and professionalism
are three of the most important
factors for keeping customers happy
– and happy customers means more
recommendations and more success!
Reflect Editor, Elaine Ellis, says: “Each
issue, we strive to bring excellent
companies to the attention of our
readers, no matter what feature we’re
working on. We believe it is important to
highlight the companies in and around
Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, as
well as further afield, that not only
offer excellent value for money, but
also excellent customer service and
high quality goods/services. We pride
ourselves on hunting out the best
companies that cater to our readership
and work exceptionally hard to give the
customer exactly what they want.
Encouraging Men To Share In 2012
According to NHS statistics, men are three times more likely to take
their own life than women; in fact, in men under 35-years-old, suicide
is the second most common cause of death in England and Wales –
ahead of road traffic accidents, murder, HIV/AIDS or drug overdoses. It
is believed that this is due to men being more reluctant to talk about
their feelings or to seek help when they need it.
NCS MD, Leslie McDonald, said: “The tragic death of Gary Speed at the
end of last year has highlighted how common suicide is amongst men. There
are numerous clichés: the strong, silent type and the stiff upper lip but when
suicide rates are so high, a man’s silence really could be the death of him.
“The higher suicide rate among men is a worldwide phenomenon, but the
changing role of men in society seems to be to blame for the increases in
male suicide over recent years. As well as having a more stressful time in
achieving educational goals than their fathers and grandfathers, today’s
men are now less successful compared to their female counterparts and the
agony of adolescence has been prolonged, with adulthood and independence
being reached at a much later date – men are now not financially
independence until their mid-20s. We’re here to offer our services to
anyone who is feeling down and just wants someone to chat to, in complete
confidence.”
NCS has provided support, advice and therapy to thousands of
people over the last 30 years. As one of the most respected and
long-established counselling providers, NCS has a wealth of trained
counsellors, so they can help with almost any problem, but they mainly
deal with:
• Stress
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Low Self-esteem
• Relationship Problems
• Bereavement
• Trauma
• Other Abuse, in particular women who have suffered sexual abuse
during childhood
In August 2011, Reflect presented NCS with our annual Certificate
of Recognition for Personal Development 2011. At the time, our
Editor, Elaine Ellis, said: “NCS do such great work, helping residents of
Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands to overcome a number of issues. We
all need a little help from time to time and NCS have a great track record.
They hold BACP Service Accreditation, with the majority of their counsellors
not only holding BACP Membership but also working towards Accreditation,
which means that NCS clients are assured an ethical service. By awarding
NCS this Certificate, I hope to encourage Reflect readers who’ll benefit from
counselling to contact them and change their life!”
Praise for Cotswold Wedding Video & Photography
“My daughter travelled around Britain looking for a picturesque venue for her wedding.
She settled on glorious Gloucestershire. I was going to ask friends to cover the event on
their video cameras and spend money on the photographs. I was so impressed with your
work and helpful advice, when we met at the venue to make arrangements that I felt we
needed a video. Many guests were coming from different countries and your presentation
convinced me of the necessity for a video. We are extremely impressed with the end
result, the complex arrangements of the day make it effortless and without anxiety and
nerves; a complete record without a camera in sight – brilliant, we are so impressed with
your expertise!”
Jessica and Sean
“We are so pleased with our record of our wedding day. Elderly relatives made a special
effort to be on top form for the day; we have a special memory to remember them after
they are no longer with us. Your careful and unobtrusive coverage of the day has given us
a complete record of a very happy and special event. Thank you for everything! We shall
be recommending your service to all our friends.”
