Page 4 The Star • FEBRUARY 22, 2012 Obituaries Sheree Carol Thomas-Bird Sheree Carol Thomas-Bird, 21, came into this world on December 3, 1990, arriving at Grand Coulee, Washington, into the home of Richard and Laura (Tulee) Thomas Jr. and departed from Nespelem, Washington, on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012. Raised in the Shaker Church, Sheree played on her Yakima, Washi n g t o n m i d d l e school’s basketball team and later attended high school in Omak, Washington. Always a hard worker, Sheree most recently was manager at the McDonalds Restaurant in Wolf Point, Mont., prior to moving back to Nespelem. When not working, she enjoyed spending time together with her many friends in person, on the phone and via ‘Facebook’. Most of all though, Sheree loved her two beautiful daughters Breanna and Nicole. Sheree is survived by her husband Stephen Bird; two wonderful daughters who will carry on Sheree’s legacy Breanna E. Thomas-Bird and Nicole Wakista- Bird; grandmother Celia Tulee; parents Richard and Laura (Tulee) Thomas Jr.; parents-in-law Curtis and Tonya Bird; siblings: Kara Thomas, Amanda Cheney, Adyna Thomas, Joshua Thomas, Richie Tulee and Mikie Sternbeck; siblings-inlaw: Delvin Bird, Darrell Bird, Lakota Bird, Tyray Bird, Teanna Iron Cloud, Jonathan Runsthrough Jr. and Summer Bird as well as numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Richard D. Thomas, Sr., Esther Iukes-Thomas and Meachem Tulee Sr. Strate Funeral Home of Grand Coulee, hosted Sheree’s Native American Dressing Ceremony on Tuesday, February 21, at 1 p.m., followed by a wake at the Nespelem Community Center which began at 7 p.m. Sheree’s Graveside Services took place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22, (today) at the Owhi Family Cemetery in Nespelem. Nelson Iukes officiated. Strate Funeral Home of Grand Coulee, was honored to be serving Sheree’s family. Larry Peha Larry Peha, 67, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, in Davenport, Washington. He was born on May 12, 1944, in Wilbur, to Ludwig and Dorothy (Dietrich) Peha. Larry attended schools in the area, graduating from Almira High School in 1962. He married Marjorie Evelyn Kruger in Almira on June 19, 1965. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, past member of Almira Lions Club and served a term as Zone Chairman, Past 7 th degree member of Highland Grange, Past Lincoln Mutual #1 board member, and was a member of the Almira Gun Club. He enjoyed fishing, shooting and other outdoor activities. He made radio-controlled airplanes for several years. Larry is survived by his wife Marjorie, at the home in Almira; four sons: Loren Peha and Lisa of Almira, Darren Peha and Tonja of Spokane, Ryan Peha and Deborah of Almira, and Chris-Allen Peha and Jennifer of Walla Walla; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ludwig and Dorothy Peha. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Wilbur Lutheran Church, Wilbur, with Pastor Mike Nelson officiating. In front: Allison Rice. — submitted photo Girls take part in local pageant Several local girls took part in a “natural” pageant Feb. 11, that organizers say will be planned again for next year. The Queen of Hearts Natural Pageant was designed for children and young women, ages 3-20 to promote confidence, poise, public speaking abilities and interaction skills, say organizers Carol Schoning of Coulee Dam, and Heather Downs of Grand Coulee. Girls are recognized as “queens” and “princesses” and empowered as children and young women in the community, they say. Don’t confuse the program with the TV reality series where crazed parents doll up their little girls, they say. This "natural" pageant allows no makeup in any category, with the only exception being older contestants wishing to use light makeup to cover blemishes. Specific guidelines are made for appropriate dress that keeps contestants respectable to themselves and others. This pageant does not have a talent category. Schoning and Downs say they had a decent turn out and plans are already in the works for the pageant next year. Judges were Downs, Marilyn Martino and Nina Fields. The evening of the pageant Grand Coulee also had it's very first “Grand Coulee Dam's Got Talent” competition. Contestants were given five minutes to showcase their best. It was open to any one of any age and from anywhere. First place winners in their categories were: Allison Rice, Alexia Ryan, Desiree Rice and Heather Downs. Runners up were Meagan Bellamy. Overall was given to Meagan Bellamy for her playful rendition of the Beach Boys Classic "Fun Fun Fun". Trophies and other prizes were given and plans are being made for next year. The Star 509.633.1350 Harrell receives achievement medal The Department of the Air Force awarded Staff Sergeant Nathan A. Harrell the Air Force Achievement Medal for Outstanding Achievement from Feb. 25, 2011, to July 1, 2011. Harrell distinguished himself by outstanding achievements as a U-2 and Global Hawk Fuels Systems repair craftsman, 380th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 380th Expeditionary Maintenance Group, 380th Air Expeditionary Wing, A1Dhafra Air Base, United Arab Emirates. During this period, in support of operations Enduring Freedom, New Dawn and Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa, Sgt. Harrell demonstrated vast technical expertise while trouble shooting an elusive fuel imbalance anomaly, the Air Force states in a press release. He quickly isolated and repaired a faulty float switch, returning the aircraft to missioncapable status in less than 72 hours, and ultimately contributing to the unit’s overall 92-percent mission effectiveness rate. Additionally, as support section technician, Sgt. Free tax preparation is once again being offiered at the senior center in Grand Coulee every Tuesday now through April 10 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Volunteers trained in cooperation with the IRS will offer free help to taxpayers with low to middle incomes in preparing their federal income taxes. Special attention is given to those 60 and older. Free e-filing is also available. Taxpayers should bring with them: a copy of last year’s tax return; Social Security cards or other official documentation showing social security numbers for themselves and all dependents and proofs of salary, interest, pensions, Social Security, or any other sources of income. For a faster refund, bring a sample check so a refund can be direct deposited into your bank account. Nespelem 2012 All- Indian Basketball Tournament results The Nespelem All Indian Basketball Tournament was held January 14-15, 2012. This year we had over 30 teams competing in (4) separate tournaments: Young Men, Women, 35 and over, and 50 and over bracket. This year was the largest All Indian Basketball Tournament in the Nespelem and Grand Coulee Dam area.
