The Star • OCTOBER 16, 2013Page 3Letters to the EditorWilder was clear, professional, respectedMy previous letter to you wasnot published and I didn’t thinkmuch about it, assuming youseek to balance the public inputfor fairness. I feel compelled towrite again after reading the letterfrom Mayor Snow’s daughterthat was recently published.I can understand why a lovingchild would feel the need to defendand support her father. WhatI can’t understand is why the father(Mayor Snow) can’t defendO P I N I O Nand support himself! I haven’tseen one letter from him eitherpromoting an issue, or defendinghis position. Why is that?To be fair, I worked with Mr.Wilder for a number of years andI also consider him a personalfriend. As the Human ResourcesManager for Issaquah duringGreg’s tenure, I can assure you ofhis impeccable character and professionalintegrity. Some may beoffended by his “style” and unrelentingpursuit of a goal, but he isamazingly productive and is willingto provide rationale for eachaction to those interested. His staff revered him and thecommunity respected him becausethey were all involved inhis decision-making processes. You will always know how he feelsand where he stands … you willnever be left second-guessing.Lois TaylorNo one to blame for theater closureLet me make it VERY clear.NO ONE is to blame for the theaterclosure. We were not able to raise the$90,000 needed to upgrade from35mm film to digital. Our 35mmprojector broke and the partwe needed, they did not makeanymore. We asked the communityfor help. Very few offered tohelp us. We had raised a pledgedamount of approximately $2,500— no where near what we neededto open the doors again. My grandmother, Carole Fisher(now deceased) had boughtthe theater to try and keep it upand running to give back to thisTime for new leadershipAnswers for Jesse givenHere is some of the historyJess Utz asked for. I moved here51 years ago.Rawe and Rauch now housesAll American Spacers whereairplane parts are being built.Brown’s Department Store, it isnot being used now. The old WildLife Restaurant is now PepperJack’s Bar & Grille. The WildLife started on B St., now locatedon Midway, highway 155, Grandcommunity — before she foundout about the cancer comingback. When she passed away, thetheater was passed down to mymother, Lynette Zierden. Whenwe couldn't afford to keep the theater, and the bills kept piling up,we got out of our lease, and gavethe theater back to the town ofCoulee Dam.And just so everyone knows, unless the bowling alley getsbought here soon, because theyare selling Riverview Lanes, theonly business that will be in thatbuilding will be The Melody. Now think about that. What isthere left for the kids to do in thisI read the letter to The Starwritten by Mayor Snow’s daughterand asked Mr. Wilder if hewas going to respond, and he saidthat he “wasn’t going to argue ordebate the issues with a father’sdaughter or any other stand-in!”And he asked me, “Where is themayor himself? What does HEhave to say?”Mr. Wilder is right; we neverreally seem to know where MayorSnow stands on the issues. Wewant a more open governmentwith fair and impartial leaderswilling to actually listen to theirconstituents and to think the importantissues through. And regardless of the fingerpointingor “fault,” it is neverthelesstrue; under Mayor Snow ourcommunity swimming pool WASclosed, our utility rates HAVEgone through the roof, the TreatmentPlant project WAS ramroddedthrough, and our ability toparticipate in council meetingsHAS been diminished. Sixteenyears is long enough and CouleeDam needs a different way oflooking at things and we need anew and different kind of leader.Mr. Wilder has gone to batfor us, fighting the expensiveReader prefers Tea Party lineThe blame game hit home recentlywhen Scott Hunter (theStar editor) blamed the Tea Partyfor the country’s woes.I’m not a Tea Party memberbut know a lot of good people whoare. It seems people have a shortmemory. The billions of dollarsthe stimulus plan that was supposedto revive our economy justdidn’t work.Fannie and Freddie were bailedout for over one hundred blliondollars, mostly for wrecking thehousing market and causing realhardship on a lot of people.Watching the news one evening,it was pointed out the presidenthad lied 30 times during athree-hour newscast.Over a year ago PresidentObama went before the UnitedNations and said the BenghaziMassacre of our diplomats wascaused by a video. Another big embarrassinglie, the president wasin Las Vegas when our diplomatswere murdered, and what he didduring the crisis is still unknown.Secretary of State Hillary Clintonstated what difference does itmake. The survivors of Benghaziwere threatened and warned notto reveal the truth. The IRS scandal is a disaster.A lot of good organizations havebeen harassed because they wereTea Party members or didn’t agreewith President Obama’s agenda.Council candidates endorsedDuane Johnson has chosen tooppose Andy Trader in the upcomingCoulee Dam Council election.I support Duane and feelthat his experience and educationas a manager in the public sectorwill be a welcome addition. He isarticulate, sensitive, and respectful.Duane graduated from LakeRoosevelt High School, went onto get a master’s degree, and addsa cultural perspective to the mixthat has been too long missing!Likewise, I support Gayle Swagerty’sbid to unseat Karl Hjorten.Karl has been at the center of,and instrumental in, shovingthe overly expensive TreatmentPlant project down our collectivethroats! Gayle is a “full-time”Coulee Dam resident with a sharpmind, great ideas, and an involvingpersonality. She’s open to adifferent approach and not afraidof change. There has never been a runon either the Mayor’s or Councilseats … this election is different. This is a rare opportunity tochange the balance. To see andcommunity? When the theaterwas open, a good number of thekids were there Friday and someeven there again on Saturday justto have something to do and notbe bored at home or doing otherthings. But once again, NO ONE IS TOBLAME FOR THE CLOSURE OFTHE THEATER. So quit pointingfingers at each other. If you wantit back, someone step up, and goto the town of Coulee Dam andsee what you can do.Mara Landrum-daughter of former ownerTreatment Plant project. He hasstepped up and put untold hoursinto causing the community andthe Tribes and various state andfederal agencies to start thinkingabout other more cost-effectiveoptions. He has shown the experienceand leadership that I thinkwill help us. Regardless of other“issues” this alone is enough toconvince me to support GregWilder in his bid for our mayor!Rachel MosesCoulee DamCoulee. The Eagles Lodge is still on BStreet and still is being used. The city hall in Coulee Dam isvery old and still is the city hall. The Credit Union used to be anold school house. A lot ofpeople should be in jail, not onelawbreaker has been arrested forthese serious crimes.I have a choice, and I prefer theTea Party.Don McClureNespelemknow more about your candidates, review their statements inthe Okanogan County on-line voter’sPamphlet. Unfortunately, youwill only find that the challengersfelt it important to post their positionsand history. It seems thatthe incumbents just didn’t careenough about us to share eventheir thoughts!Greg WilderBut I was not the only one. This column was supposed to be about a fatherand son going on what was most likely their lasthunting trip together. It was going to conclude withthe father getting a monster buck, one that he andas his son would never forget. Well, that could stillhappen, it just did not this weekend. It sounds like it was a verysuccessful opening day out therein Coulee Country. For a while itsounded like everyone got deeropening morning, including somereally big bucks across the area.As a matter of fact, one localeven said it was the best huntingin the area since the 1980s. Boys’ ChadKiser with 118 and girls’ StephanieAnderson with a score of 66.nothing hanging in the garage as of Sunday night. It was not for a lack seeing and trying though.Opening morning I had my shot, literally. Weknew what buck we were hunting for and we werepretty sure where it was in the area we hunted. Wehad a plan and it worked. Well, almost.I settled into “My spot,” the place we hoped thedeer would be funneled to, his escape route. It wasstarting to get light, and as the sun came up, so didmy excitement. I could hear shots a long way off;I knew they were not from any of our bunch. I satfor 45 minutes and had heard nothing else. I decidedto make my way toward the father-and-sonduo, hoping I would push something to them. As Istood, movement to the left. The buck was trottingaway from something and did not see me. I wentback down immediately and my gun came up. Thebuck stopped. Looked back at me, I counted. Yep, legal.I took a breath and pulled the trigger. Too high. The buck took off on a sprint, heading for the nextravine. I loaded the next round. As I did, four doescame running out right below me. I looked to themfor a second and then focused back to the buck. Itdisappeared over the next ridge. I waited for him tocome up the other side. Nothing. The wait seemedlike hours.I finally made my way to thespot he’d been when I missedhim, just in case I did hit. Nothing.I peered over the ridge.Nothing.I knew I was about to berazzed the rest of the day. I mademy way to the others. Yes it wasme who had shot, and no, therewill not be cleaning anythingthis morning.Over the next 20 hours, wesaw lots of deer, some shooters too, but we never hadthe right angle, or there was another hunter behindthe shooting lane. So Sunday before noon we triedagain for the one I missed.New plan. Same result. Except it was not me thatmissed. After a short chase, I had the same buck inmy crosshairs, only this time I made the most rookieerror. I forgot to take the safety off. By the time Irecovered from that miscue, he was gone again.Oh, and this buck, which I am now calling theKryptonight Buck, I found out has been shot at 10times in a 48-hour period and is still gathering hisdoes. The story does not end today. I will be backout there looking for him again before you read thiscolumn. If I am lucky, he might even be hanging inEd’s shop before this paper is printed and we mighthave the ending we want for the father and son.THE STARThree Midway, P.O.
