The Star • The Star • SEPTEMBER 26, 2012Ladies squeak by Shockersby John R. McNeil IIThe Lady Raiders came away with a victorySaturday at home against the WatervilleShockers, 3-2.In the first game, Head Coach Nate Piturachsatittried a different rotation with KassadiBoutain, Samantha Turner, and ChyenneKelly-Marconi in the game. During the firstgame the Lady Raiders played a solid gameand came away with the victory on a serviceace from Kassadi Boutain. That carried over into the second gameuntil the score was 22-12. The Shockers madea comeback and the Lady Raiders began makingmistakes from inconsistent play and lossof focus. It looked as though the Lady Raidershad lost and the Shockers came back towin 26-24, but then the officials stated thatthe score was incorrect and the game startedagain with the same outcome. Again the officialsspoke with the score table to clear upthe problem. The Lady Raiders finally gainedthe win 27-25.The LR slump that started in the secondgame carried on into the third and fourthgames with the Lady Raiders dropping both.Instead of rolling over, the Lady RaidersA Raider goes up for a spike.pulled themselves up and in the fifth gamereverted to the consistent focused play of thefirst to seal the match win 15-9.“What it came down to at the end was a group of girls who could make a strong attack,” Piturachsatitsaid. “Waterville covered the court well and didn’t let balls drop; we couldn’t just sit there and wait for themto make a mistake. We needed to attack strong with solid serve and hits.”Samantha Turner, in her first start, served nine for nine, impressing Piturachsatit. Hailey Chaney went19 of 20 in serving, scoring six points. As a team, the Lady Raiders had 15 kills from 91 attacks. Piturachsatitsaid this is an area they want to improve this week.“I need a player or two who can pick the rest of the team up and get them motivated,” he said.Kelly-Marconi started in place of the injured Tanecia Stanczak and “did an excellent job of owning thenet by making a few blocks and several nice attacks,” the coach said. “She has earned herself more playingtime with her performance during this game.”The Lady Raiders return to action at Manson tomorrow at 5 p.m., then travel to Soap Lake on Tuesdayfor a non-league match against the Eagles at 5:30 p.m.Lancers stick it to Raidersby John R. McNeil IIThe Raiders drop to 0-4 afterFriday’s loss to the Liberty Lancers44-13, when they were hamperedby inconsistent play and turnoversthroughout the game.On what needs to improve afterthe loss - “We’ve got to take care ofthe ball better,” Head Coach SteveFiles said, “still too many assignmenterrors, both offensively anddefensively.”On their first offensive drive, the Raiders scored on a one-yardrun by Justus DeWinkler for anend-of-first-quarter score of Raiders6-Lancers 8.The Lancers began to take advantageof the Raider turnovers inthe second quarter, scoring threetouchdowns to make their halftimelead 32-6.In the second half, LakeRoosevelt’s defense stiffened asthe Raiders held the Lancers toonly one score offensively.“Defense was much more aggressivein the second half - thatwas great to see,” Files said.On offense, the Raiders scoredone more time on a DeWinkler75-yard run.The Lancers scored the lasttouchdown of the game on the ensuingkickoff, which they returned85 yards for the score.Even though down big, theRaiders still slogged on, pleasingCoach Files. “Our players stucktogether and kept fighting,” hesaid. “There’s no quit in theseRaiders.”The non-league schedule is over, and on Friday the Raiders will beginCentral Washington 2B play atKittitas, starting at 7 p.m.When asked what the Raidersneeded to do to win on Friday, Filessaid, “Open the game with toughphysical play and great focus, thenmaintain it for four quarters.”The Kittitas Coyotes come inwith a 1-2 overall record and are1-0 in league play. Kittitas openedwith a 28-24 loss to the ReardanIndians, followed by a loss to Lind-Ritzville, 35-14.The Coyotes won last week intheir league opener over Oroville,38-14.Piccolo and Hanwaylead runners at Spokaneby John R.
