New US President -
World Going to Improve?
The 2008 U.S elections were historic for many reasons.
Not only was an African American elected as president
for the first time, but many problems face the U.S. In turn
there are large world crises taking place from economic
woes to environmental issues to poor relations between
governments. Yet, with the new president elect, Barack
Obama, many hope to see the world change for the better
and get back on track.
“I am a firm believer that Barack Obama will improve
this country and as cliché as this sounds, make everything
better” said one member. “Maybe it's because of his
easygoing nature or because of what he says, to me,
seems like he's not lying to the country, as compared to
how McCain acted and when he spoke.” Thus, some
members, see Barack Obama, as a fresh and new change
for the U.S. And with the change and innovation Barack
Obama appears to represent, one can only assume the
world will get better.
Some members, however, seem to disagree. “He is going
to do a better job than Bush, but that's not saying much,”
wrote one member. “Is Barack going to make
improvements? Yes. Is there a bright sky ahead? Hell, no.
Dems and Reps are not THAT different. If Obama was
really an agent of change, he would have been silenced
like Ron Paul.” So others may see Barack Obama as not
becoming of change and hope, rather, as another
representative of the same system and, therefore, not that
different from the previous Republican administration.
Yet other members were both more realistic and a bit
more cautiously hopeful that Barack Obama will improve
the U.S’s international standing as well as the world.
“The quickest change I think of, though, will be how the
U.S. is seen by the rest of the world,” stated one member.
“The past eight years really hurt America's image and
damaged a lot of relationships with other countries. The
reactions from the rest of the world's leaders already
show how quickly this may change.
What’s Going On
By 4thseal
I think we have a chance to patch up relationships with old
allies that were strained by the war and to really look at
communicating with countries we are at odds with rather than
just threatening back and forth. I still cannot get over the fact
that Ahmadinejad sent a letter to congratulate Obama. Yes, the
letter was much more convoluted than that, but the simple fact
that he sought to open communication at all really gives me
hope.” So there is hope, at least to some members, and one big
hope in that the U.S’s relations with other countries will
improve, and thus, improving national relations around the
world as well.
Nevertheless, right now no one truly knows if Barack Obama
will truly bring change and better the world. “We all just got to
wait and see how things turn out,” one member said. “The
world itself seems to be waiting for him to take power on
January 20. Even now with the economic summit going on,
they don’t seem to be doing much except talking
philosophically since it seems like they will be waiting for
Obama to take the stage. He is going to be in some serious
pressure to be an excellent president.”
