Private Server and All Free
Downloads to be Turned Off
Yep yep, I've decided to downsize the website in light of Naruto being
available in the future an hour after being aired on Japan.
I initially made this website because getting Anime was pretty difficult
without torrents. Things have changed a lot now and I feel the time is now
right to do this.
The site will still need to be funded by the members of this forum. If that
can't happen then closing this place down will naturally be the next step.
Besides the exchange rate between the £ -> $ is at a 10 year low and I can no
longer afford it. Saving up for a house and family are my priorities now.
You can still continue to donate via the normal means or directly via paypal
to kakashi@narutomania.com
The target for this month is still $1200, as the datacentre needs 3-days notice
to close the servers and it's all paid in advance.
New US President -
World Going to Improve?
The 2008 U.S elections were historic for many reasons.
Not only was an African American elected as president
for the first time, but many problems face the U.S. In turn
there are large world crises taking place from economic
woes to environmental issues to poor relations between
governments. Yet, with the new president elect, Barack
Obama, many hope to see the world change for the better
and get back on track.
“I am a firm believer that Barack Obama will improve
this country and as cliché as this sounds, make everything
better” said one member. “Maybe it's because of his
easygoing nature or because of what he says, to me,
seems like he's not lying to the country, as compared to
how McCain acted and when he spoke.” Thus, some
members, see Barack Obama, as a fresh and new change
for the U.S. And with the change and innovation Barack
Obama appears to represent, one can only assume the
world will get better.
Some members, however, seem to disagree. “He is going
to do a better job than Bush, but that's not saying much,”
wrote one member. “Is Barack going to make
improvements? Yes. Is there a bright sky ahead? Hell, no.
Dems and Reps are not THAT different. If Obama was
really an agent of change, he would have been silenced
like Ron Paul.” So others may see Barack Obama as not
becoming of change and hope, rather, as another
representative of the same system and, therefore, not that
different from the previous Republican administration.
Yet other members were both more realistic and a bit
more cautiously hopeful that Barack Obama will improve
the U.S’s international standing as well as the world.
“The quickest change I think of, though, will be how the
U.S. is seen by the rest of the world,” stated one member.
“The past eight years really hurt America's image and
damaged a lot of relationships with other countries. The
reactions from the rest of the world's leaders already
show how quickly this may change.
What’s Going On
By 4thseal
I think we have a chance to patch up relationships with old
allies that were strained by the war and to really look at
communicating with countries we are at odds with rather than
just threatening back and forth. I still cannot get over the fact
that Ahmadinejad sent a letter to congratulate Obama. Yes, the
letter was much more convoluted than that, but the simple fact
that he sought to open communication at all really gives me
hope.” So there is hope, at least to some members, and one big
hope in that the U.S’s relations with other countries will
improve, and thus, improving national relations around the
world as well.
Nevertheless, right now no one truly knows if Barack Obama
will truly bring change and better the world. “We all just got to
wait and see how things turn out,” one member said. “The
world itself seems to be waiting for him to take power on
January 20. Even now with the economic summit going on,
they don’t seem to be doing much except talking
philosophically since it seems like they will be waiting for
Obama to take the stage. He is going to be in some serious
pressure to be an excellent president.”
4thseal moderates over the Forum Central Desk, the Newsletter section, the Private Server Helpdesk, and the Creative Writing & Literature
section. He is a hermit, who enjoys the subtle peace and comfort of not having to ever, ever leave his home. His favorite anime is Trigun.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) -- Saudi Prince Al-Waleed
bin Talal says he will build the world's tallest building in
the Saudi city of Jeddah.
Sunday's statement by his firm, Kingdom Holding Company
says the building will be more than a kilometer (3,281 feet)
high and will be part of a larger project that will cost 100
billion Saudi riyals ($26.7 billion). [Posted by Krozar]
Just when [Dubai] thought that they built the tallest tower in
the world, the Saudis come and claim to build a taller
building. I also bet that it will be a lot more attractive than
Burj [Dubai] considering that it is in fact Prince Waleed Bin
Talal whose funding this (the world's sixth wealthiest
individual). ~ Syfer Van Hyden
This thing seems like a waste. There is no industry pushing
for this thing. They don't need this new city for businesses;
it will be a ghost town.
As to lowering population in Japan, I can only think of
idiocracy and the fear I have of it coming true.
Though probably the plausible scenario, especially in places
like Japan will be a new migrant worker class. That is a
large population of non-nationals that work for very little
money and support the national population. ~sadated_peon
Lounge Report
This month the Lounge was subjected to the sincerity or cruelty (depending on your point of view) of the administrators of Naruto and Bleach
Mania. I am, of course, speaking about the new rotating moderator program that appeared in the Lounge out of nowhere just like a stranded
whale appears suddenly on some isolated private beach. And just like any no good, beach-hogging whale, the new weekly mods found
themselves face to face with a rich and annoyed shotgun-wielding private beach owner...A.K.A - Tom Cruise...otherwise known as the
Loungers...
As this reporter recalls, the mayhem and chaos derived by the first temp Lounge mod, Kibs, feelings of remorse, pain, secret joy, and panic
rush to me as if I'd taken some kind of high-class drug only to find out it was nothing but simple Lounge idio-crazy. Telling an admin that
being a Lounge moderator was as simple as peeping at your sister, Kibs went into the Lounge, blind to the fact that the Lounge is one of the
hardest sections to moderate. Drunk on power, Kibs started sticking threads, dictating rules, and attempting to man-handle the Loungers in his
own Kibsy way. This, of course, brought much chaos, lulz, and joy as the entire Lounger force - enemies, friends, idiots, and elitists alike -
united against the newly-anointed moderator in what was a rare and oddly compelling joy of unity.
The next moderator was Lounge legend LONGTIME. This was a fairly uneventful week, and LONGTIME appeared to be a fair and joyful
moderator and the week can be summed up in one word - sexy!
After LONGTIME, Nivikran was granted moderators power to the whoas and hurrahs of the Loungers. Nivikran turned out to be a good
moderator at times, taking an active interest in the Lounge and its threads, encouraging the echoing lulz throughout the halls of the Lounge.
And, yet, at times, Nivikran brought chaos as well, creating scandalous threads and moving some older threads to the GFX Lounge area. Thus,
Nivikran’s temporary modship can be summed up as an experience not to forget, and yet as something everyone will try to forget because "the
All purpose shirtless men/yaoi" thread may have been a bit too much...
The current temporary moderator is superbob, who appears to be doing a fine job, creating small forms of chaos by mildly flaunting his newlyfound
power, and yet, keeping whatever order can be kept in the Lounge, though the week is not over and mass chaos could always erupt in
the hell pits known as the Lounge section!
So congrats and thank you to all the temporary moderators who have moderated the Lounge thus far; you have surely done your part to adding
to the lulz.
In unrelated news, this reporter had a hard month and made a few threads booing things which, in turn, caused a book about him being a
grouch to be published in the Lounge...look for it on sale this Christmas. >>
A lot happens in Naruto and Bleach Mania each month, so it’s easy to let a few good threads pass by. Here
are some threads that are definitely worth checking out
The Debates Bar & Lounge
Summary: Located in the Debates Section, The Debates
Bar & Lounge is a great thread for those members not
familiar with the Debates Section. As Debates moderator,
Krozar, writes: "You may have noticed that this area of
Naruto and Bleach Mania is much different than the rest
of the community. This is a more refined place as you
will see in your visit here. The Debates corner is not very
fast paced--far from it; we quite enjoy our isolation from
the typical populace We are nestled deep in this bustling
community with a small assemblage of regulars who
make up this society of debaters of NM."
You can check out the entire thread here.
Suggested Threads
Sports Trivia
Summary: A newly created thread in the Sports Section, in
the Sports Trivia Thread allows members to ask and
answers trivia concerning sports. The rules are simple: "The
person who answers the question correctly asks another
question and so on and so forth." It's very easy to participate
in this trivia thread, and no commitment other than making a
new question is required. So, if you want to test your
knowledge of sports across the world, then make sure to
check this thread out!
Get to Know a Section
Problems, Suggestions & Comments
Located at the very bottom of Naruto and Bleach Mania, the Problems, Suggestions, and Comments section is
different than any other section. This section’s main purpose is to assist members in any problems or suggestions they
encounter while using the forums. This, of course, varies from the majority of the sections, which are subject and
conversation oriented. This section, however, is one of which every member should be aware. When faced with an issue
or sparked with an idea for the forums, it is here that members turn for assistance. The response time is great, and most, if
not, all of the issues reported in this section are resolved. And suggestion threads are always welcomed and discussion
therein is kept friendly. This is also one of the sections that the administrators frequent on the forums, which gives this
section an added importance as a tool that helps Naruto and Bleach Mania run smoothly. So keep this section in mind for
any problems, suggestions, and comments you have.
You can check out the entire thread here.
Summary: Found in the Comics Section, the Comic Download Links is a great resource for members looking for the
latest American Comics to check out. Basically, members post requesting a comic link, and most of the time, another kind
member will post the link. This is a very old thread that has been active for a long time, and provides members from
around the world access to American Comic books. So whether you're a longtime comic reader or curious as to what they
are all about, this thread is for you!
Interview with Jounin-Kakashi
Jounin-Kakashi is one of the GMs of Konoha Mura. He has a scary
reputation of being mean. But is he really? Let’s find out what kind
of a man he really is...
Q: Who are you and where are you from?
A: I'm Tom. I'm from the Netherlands. Twenty years old (by the time this
is published at least). I like anime, manga, and gaming, and I'm currently
studying to become a math teacher.
Q: You joined NM back in October 2005. You have been around NM
quite some time indeed. Do you still remember what brought you
here?
A: Easiest question to answer: GeninNaruto. I've known the guy for a
good while now. He's the one who got me into Naruto and into NM.
Q: And more importantly, what brought you to Konoha Mura?
A: The same for the previous question. After hearing good stories from
him about Konoha Mura, it was time for me to start watching Naruto and
join the RP
Q: You have been part of Konoha Mura for the longest of times.
What has made you stay?
A: The people I've build a relationship with in Konoha Mura. It is a little
like a second home. A place where people greet me with a smile.
Q: Character wise, you have created many characters during your
RPing career. Do you have a favorite one?
A: To say I have a favorite one? No, I can't. Each one of the characters I
make have their little quirks that make them special from Kashi who is
wise and strong, but has awkward relations with several people around
him to Hiei, who is reliable on the battlefield, and at the same time,
making decisions in his private life, purely with his penis.
Q: And finally the last question: You seem to have quite the
reputation of being mean and expressing your opinions very bluntly.
Are you really such a meanie?
A: Hells, yeah! Rule with fear. Well, it depends who it’s with. When
dealing with people who just feel like signing up, ignoring every rule we
made, which we put effort in and made a godforsaken f-ing overpowered
dude, then I see no reason, why I have to be all cute and gentle. I'll tear
into them because they seem to lack common sense and actual thinking.
All in all, I can actually be nice, cute and cuddly! It’s just the time you
have to invest in me.
Recent events in Konoha Mura
The past few weeks have been very eventful. Chuunin exams
were held. It ended up in chaos when Konoha’s enemies started
their invasion. Blood was spattered, lives were lost, but in the
end, Konoha was saved. But at what price? Our Hokage, Tarumi
Natsuo, has been wounded badly and how is Sou? The fates of
several characters have taken many interesting turns. What will
happen next?
Martzu moderates over the Creative Writing & Literature section and Fanclub section. She has developed a serious liking to yaoi, obsession to
the Legend of Zelda and now and then tries to draw too. She has a hedgehog as a pet.
December 2008 Moderator Interview
Mod Interview: Enishi By Fresh1
NM Exposed: Thank you for taking some time to conduct this
interview. First off, I was wondering if you would tell everyone
your real first name and where you currently live.
Enishi: Everyone who knows my real name calls me Nick, and I
like to keep my real name off of NM. I live in Trinidad.
NM Exposed: I am guessing your liking of anime and manga
brought you to NM. How did you first get into them?
Enishi: I used to watch Rurouni Kenshin on local TV, which
sparked the anime interest, but I first saw the Gaara versus Lee
fight, which got me into Naruto and then ultimately led me to NM.
Naruto was introduced to me via a close friend.
NM Exposed: So when you first joined NM, did you do it just
for the downloads and not think you'd be as active as you are?
Enishi: I joined just for the downloads as far as I can remember,
and I never thought I'd be active as I am now due to the number of
retards that frequent the forum, but somehow I ended up posting
anyway.
NM Exposed: What activities do you like to do offline?
Enishi: Offline, I mostly game, play football, and hit the beach
when I can, but these days I spend most of my time at work.
NM Exposed: What kind of job do you have? Is it difficult?
Enishi: I'm a software engineer. It's not difficult for those in the
field, but it's not a job anyone can do. You have to be able to use a
significant portion of your brain to work in that industry.
NM Exposed: So then you consider yourself to have above
average intelligence? Also, have you ever considered working
in another field?
Enishi: To put it bluntly, yes, I am above average intelligence. I've
considered switching to some sort of mechanical engineering field.
Before and after I complete my current degree, I'll have a grace
period of about two years to decide whether I want to entertain the
idea again.
NM Exposed: Cool, cool. Has your work every affected your
relationship with your girlfriend? Also how’s the relationship
Enishi: Work has affected my relationship with my girlfriend. It's
my safe haven away from her and all the problems that accompany
being in a relationship. Right now, I don't see any future in my
relationship, but I'm in a situation that's not easily resolved by
simply breaking up. I believe my death is the only option out, but I
don't give up too easily, so I'm stuck trying to patch all my
problems with her with beer and ignoring them. But work is not
the source of my problems with her.
NM Exposed: Interesting. Do you have any problems with your
family or are you close with them?
Enishi: I'm close to my family in the sense that I'd help them when they
need help but we're not the emotional, hugging, pal types. Because of the
lack of emotions, we have no problems. Emotions are the source of all
problems because they impair your ability to logically solve or avoid
them.
NM Exposed: You know, you sound like you'd make a good bad guy
in like an anime or something... but that's just me. What caused you
to believe that, though? Like a bad experience in the past or
something?
Enishi: My whole childhood was a bad experience, but it's just part of the
reason why I believe that. I mostly believe that because of personal
observations of things around me. People, jobs, crime, and basically
anything that requires the interaction of people. I'm surprised most people
don't notice it though.
NM Exposed: Fair enough, then. But with that attitude, could you
ever see yourself having a child or getting married?
Enishi: No. But stranger things have happened. I do know for sure that I'd
be totally different with my kids. It's finding a compatible woman that is
the problem.
NM Exposed: Yeah, that sounds about right. Then do you practice
any form of religion?
Enishi: No. God does not exist.
NM Exposed: Lmao, short and simple on that point. Alright, if you
say so. Well, let’s see…have you ever been arrested? I do wonder a
little now how rough the jails in Trinidad are compared to here.
Enishi: I've never been arrested, and the jails in Trinidad aren't like the
jails up there. Some of your jails have phones and beds. Ours passes out
condoms to inmates. Your jails help to reform some prisoners. Ours teach
prisoners how to be better criminals in the first instance and then how to
run things from a cell.
NM Exposed: Well then, do you have any plans on moving from
there or at least traveling?
Enishi: I don't have any plans on moving. It's a nice place if you know
where to avoid and when you should go places. I do plan on traveling
some day. I want to at least go to Fiji before I die.
NM Exposed: Fiji, you say. Good choice. Lots of hot women there.
So, lastly, I would like to know how long you think you will remain
on NM and if you have any final words for anyone reading.
Enishi: I'll remain on NM as long as the site is up and I have internet.
Last words? If you have something you want to do, then do it as soon as
possible because you are all going to die. And get life insurance before
you do.
Member Interview: MD
By Fresh1
NM Exposed: Alright, how did you come across NM and why did
you decide to stay and become an active member?
MD: Well, frankly, "i lieked nartoe," and I wanted to download free
nartoe. I was completely new to the internet at the time, anime
especially. I didn't really post actively on NM until a few months
after I joined. I started posting actively mainly because of the Lounge
It was pretty funny back then, and trolling has always been a hobby
of mine. Oh, I googled for free Naruto downloads too. That's how I
came across NM.
NM Exposed: Now you were a pretty s****y member in my eyes
when you joined. In fact, I can't even pinpoint when you started
being cool. What inspired this change?
MD: You probably needed glasses back then, in that case. But
seriously, I don't think I really changed much. I started getting used
to the forum. At first, I just trolled and flamed whoever annoyed me
(which turned out to be just about every active member, judging by
the flame pit). Eventually, I knew exactly who I liked and who I
thought were retards, so I knew exactly where to focus my flaming.
NM Exposed: Considering you were new to the internet then,
how did you find entertainment before you discovered it and
became active?
MD: Social life, though, that's become obsolete. I used to go out with
friends at least once every two days, now, due to living in the country
as opposed to the city (and the incredible difficulty of getting to the
city), I'm lucky to go out socially for more than once or twice a week.
I also enjoyed TV (f**k yeah, re-runs of old-school Cartoon Network
stuff), and my PS2.
NM Exposed: Seems like a lame change; city life is too good. So
you go to school, I am guessing? Any idea what you plan on
trying to become?
MD: Yeah, 'twas pretty lame; but meh, I got over it pretty quickly.
Yeah, I'm currently in the process of doing nothing, not attending,
and failing all my exams. Not the best of decisions, but yeah. As for
what I want to become? I've been geared towards becoming a
surgeon from the start.
NM Exposed: Do you think you may end up living with your
parents forever if you never find the motivation to care enough?
MD: No. I'll seriously just jump off a bridge if I'm still living with
my parents by the time I'm 30 (I don't want to be like Cane and
Tony). I kind of care, but waking up every morning at 6 AM... it's so
much easier to just go back to sleep
NM Exposed: Being as you don't have much of a social life, I
guess girls are out of the question currently, but do you have a
chick you’re trying to get?
MD: Not particularly. I have a few really close female friends; I
always go for a cup of coffee or a movie or something with them and
a few guys every Friday (well, every Friday that I'm not too lazy to
go to school, which has been three Fridays in the past three months),
but they're just friends. I got to sort out my shit and get back on track
academically before I even think of getting into a relationship.
Member Interview
NM Exposed: Tell me, how things are with your family though?
MD: Well, at the moment, not too good. Due to our (Ireland) government's
latest decision to cut free medical care for pensioners, my grandmother now
has to pay ridiculous sums each year for medical care. And I mean ridiculous;
she's in a really tight spot. I live with my mother at the moment. It's just me,
my mother and our two dogs. We do argue a lot, but that's mostly due to me
"wasting my potential." I have a brother, but he's a lot older than me and
moved out since long before I could remember.
NM Exposed: Is your family religious?
MD: My mother and I? Not particularly. I consider myself Christian (I've
considered atheism, and that didn't appeal to me), but I'm a pretty f***ing bad
Christian (I don't practice my religion at all). My grandmother is extremely
religious; she wanted to pray before dinner last Christmas.
NM Exposed: Does your online personality reflect your real life one at all
Like, do you randomly flame people in person who piss you off? Lol
MD: Yeah. Ireland is pretty lax when it comes to insults. There's nothing
quite like being with a group of friends and flaming the sh** out of each other
(or, as well call it, "taking the piss").
NM Exposed: Cane is Irish as well and enjoys drinking. Brags about it all
the time. Are you a stereotype of the Irish and do you get drunk everyday
MD: Cane is only really Irish in his own mind. He was born in Northern
Ireland, which is controlled by England, and anyone from the Republic would
be quick to refute his claim. But yeah, I don't drink much. I haven't been
really, really wasted since St. Patrick’s Day.
NM Exposed: You are very dedicated to your country as far as I can tell,
but do you have any plans to see some other places one day? If so name a
few.
MD: There are a few. 1) Canada. Really interesting place, I know a lot of
people who studied there for a few months. They all have nothing but good to
say about it. 2) Scotland: I have a lot of Scottish lineage. Hm... I think that's
about it. I know that about 90% of NM members would answer "Japan". To
those 90%, you're all weeaboo's and you should PM me your address's, so that
I can burn all your houses down.
NM Exposed: Lmao. Yeah, Japan is one of the more popular places, but
it’s an anime forum. What do you expect? Speaking of addresses, though,
do you have any people on NM you would meet in person if given the
chance?
MD: Hmm... Maybe LT because I want definitive evidence that he's not as
awesome and manly as he claims he is, Ravi's pretty cool and, of course, any
of NM's resident females (Sexy Latina, Nat, Arukas, etc).
NM Exposed: Well, let’s see…provided NM stays up for awhile longer,
do you see yourself being on there for a few more years if possible?
MD: Yeah, for sure. The Lounge is in desperate times; it is now more than
ever that MD must defend the empire of lulz from Patrck, zshortysmall,
Rollin' 20's, and all those other abortions.
NM Exposed: I laughed pretty hard at that, mainly because it holds some
truth. Well, in closing, do you have any idea of where you'll be in life and
such, say, in about five years?
MD: If I'm optimistic, I'll have burned and pillaged the houses of every NM
member I don't like. If I'm neutral, I'll be pretty close to getting a degree in
medicine. If I'm pessimistic, I'll be living with my parents posting on NM
24/7 and trying to convince myself that I'm still as awesome as I was five
years ago (not the ideal choice).
Hajime no Ippo
Hajime no Ippo (also known in the United States as
Fighting Spirit) is a manga based upon a young manturned-boxer.
This series’ writer is Jyoji Morikawa, and
it is published in Weekly Shōnen magazine. This series
has been running since 1989 and is one of the longest
running series with 828 volumes out there. There is also
an anime and an OVA movie as well.
The story is about a kid who wants to stop being bullied
and understand what true strength is. His struggle to
understand strength leads him to the boxing ring.
Because of a strange twist of fate, he ends up in a gym
and is pulled into the boxing world. From just a
fisherman’s son to a boxer, his life starts to change. He
trains hard everyday at Kamogawa Gym in order to
ready himself for the many trials that lay ahead of him.
The story focuses upon the characters’ development and
growth throughout the series. The one vital thing that
this series holds is a character that learns and grows in
front of your eyes. Ippo’s struggle to understand himself
and boxing better allows the storyline to have life. You
will not find a more interesting or fun-loving story
anywhere else.
As an anime fan, I recommend this manga and give it a
4 out of 5.
Anime and Manga Reviews
Beet the Vandal Buster is both an anime and a manga. There
are currently 12 volumes of the manga and it is still being
published. There are also 52 episodes of the anime. The
anime aired on Tokyo TV and is licensed in the U.S. by
Illumitoon Entertainment too. There is no word on whether
the anime will be continued. March 2006 was the last release
of the second series. While this anime has a classic feel to it,
there is something new about the way it is done.
The story takes place in a fantasy world that revolves around
monsters and magic. It follows the fantasy story line to a T,
but the difference is that Beet, the story’s main character,
wasn’t the hero at the time. They died to protect him and he
vowed to take their place and overtake the monsters that grip
their world. Poala, his childhood friend, joins him in his
quest to bring balance to there war-torn world. The heroes
imparted their Saiga into Beet in order to save him. Now he
carries part of them within himself.
The storyline follows Beet through his struggles and is well
done. The fight scenes hold great action and the music is
wonderfully done. The bad guys really do have two sides to
them, and the protagonist struggles to win. Sometimes you
really won’t know what is next in this series. The effects and
sounds are well-placed, and the character learns as the series
progresses. The characters are sometimes two-dimensional,
which does happen in anime. All in all, this is a well put
together anime and well worth a watch.
Overall, this series is worth your time and gets a solid 3 out
of 5.
Naruto Sports
Sports
Nestled away in the far reaches of the seemingly limitless realm of Naruto and Bleach Mania’s message board is a
little gem of a (sub)section. A place that has witnessed many a scene of jubilation, some cries of despair, yells of angst
and curses of bitterness. And in a year filled with sporting spectacles like the one that is just passing us by, it couldn’t
have been more exciting! Well, it could’ve, if there was more participation, but there’s always next year =]. This is a
section that covers sports from American football to wrestling and from aggressive inline to ultimate frisbee!
Basketball
The Massachusetts crowd had a lot to cheer for, regardless of that year
with the Celtics claiming the NBA championship, beating traditional
rivals the Los Angeles Lakers in a much-hyped but rather lopsided
series, much to the joy of regulars to the Sports Section, Insin, ifeanyi84,
Kickz and Evil Sannin, and to the dismay of dedicated Lakers fans such
as Jacoobus (and myself =[ ). This was added to the World Series crown
taken by the Red Sox earlier in a pretty good year for the Northeastern
U.S. state.
Tennis
With much of the early summer focus in our Sports Section being on
tennis, we witnessed perhaps one of the greatest rivalries in all sports go
head to head in two of the biggest tennis events of the calendar, ending
in an epic finale in which Rafael Nadal ended Roger Federer’s five-year
supremacy at Wimbledon to add to his French Open Championship that
he won beating Federer as well a few weeks earlier and there was the
small matter of an all-Williams final at Wimbledon too (won by Venus).
Wow, Venus Vs. Serena was sensational. I wish it lasted a
little longer, though. ~Gambler
Wow, that was the most epic Wimbledon ever
American Football
The leap year of the Olympics, 2008 was when Beijing turned into one
giant crystal ball of fireworks, festivities and sporting excellence. But
long before the late summer months of August, NM’s eager sports fans
were fervently following a classic season of American sports.
With the Super Bowl being expected to be a mere formality, by most
pundits, of the crowning of the New England Patriots as the first
undefeated team in the expanded NFL (having already beaten the 1972
Dolphins 16-0 record in a shorter season) some astute NMers had
already picked the underdogs the New York Giants to win.
The super bowl is going to be closer than people expect, I'm
going to pick the underdog, Giants by less than a score.
December 2008
With that came a huge spike in activity of the oft-dormant Sports
Section and the inauguration of the Euro 2008 football (soccer)
tournament. This is a big tournament on the international football
calendar, surpassed only by the World Cup. This year’s edition was a
fantastic display of all that European football brings to the table: flair,
grit, heart, tenacity, and sublimity. We have a group of very friendly
Dutch regulars amongst the NM community who were especially
involved after the Dutch lit up the tournament with dazzling displays
early on. b@st@rd, Ravi, Haohmaru and kenDM were on board to
witness the Dutch give the World Champions Italy a 3-0 stuffing in the
opening game of their tough group and then adding France to their list
of victims with some entertaining attacking play to boot.
Hahah we won!!! Damn, that second goal was awesome.
This was definitely the best match Holland has played
under Marco van Basten. ~ Haohmaru
The Dutch killed them!!!! Gooo oraaanjes ~ Akuma
But as has been so often the case with the highly-skilled Dutch teams,
they faltered in the knockout stages to a stunning Russia side that
seemed to be peaking at the right time leaving the tournament
extremely open.
There were Kickz’s comeback-kings the Turkish team, superbob’s
efficient Germans, the fleet-footed Portuguese and the mercurial Croats
vying for a spot in the final in one side of the draw whilst the
traditionally luckless Spaniards had to contest Wesker’s miserly
Italians, before facing the unfancied Russians.
As the tournament progressed, the Spanish beat out the Italians in a
dramatic penalty shootout and went on to face group rivals Russia in
the semifinals whilst the battle-weary and injury-ravaged Turks
continued their spectacular run deep into the tournament having been
on the verge of elimination so many times by facing the strong German
side who got there via out a 3-2 victory over the Portuguese.
Whilst my pre-tournament favorites Spain were through with an easy
3-0 romp over the Russians who looked distinctly outclassed on the
night and followed it up with a 1-0 win in a highly entertaining and
fitting finale.
I was ecstatic as were other Spain supporters:
“Spain played a great match. Deserving of the
championship title. It’s been 44 years since they won
anything. So conquering Euro 2008 is a great
achievement.”
Congrats to Spain. They showed up to play with the win.
Germany came to play and actually played very good for
most of it, but the last half an hour of play, they gave the
ball away to many times. Bad passes, traps, and all around
not great play. ~ superbob
And YET another disappointment. So much as this is hard
to say but Spain deserved this victory. Good game, though
unfair at times, but...good game ~ Syfer Van Hyden
And then there was 08/08/08, the monumental opening ceremony of the
Beijing Olympics left the world in awe, but what ensued was an even
more amazing sight to behold. Records tumbled, hearts broke, tears
shed both of savoring the joy of victory and tasting the bitterness of
defeat. For some, mere participation was a great honor, for others taking
silver inexplicable disappointment.
There was drama too, infamy for athletes who chose to resort to illegal
substances to give themselves a disgraceful name, controversy ranging
from serious matters such as legal age of the gymnasts to things as
farcical as the miming of one of the songs by a different girl who was
deemed more ‘presentable.' It was all just fuel for talk at NM and
everyone chipped in with their views. Quite frankly this thread alone
was so vast that I wouldn’t be able to do it justice by presenting snippets
to you and it was the interactivity of it all that really brought the
experience to life.
But the ultimate winners were the sports and the participants with mindboggling
feats of stamina, endurance, strength and courage athletes like
Michael Phelps (winning an unprecedented 8 gold medals) or Usain
Bolt (3 golds including the shattering of the men’s 100m sprint) or
Rebecca Adlington a 19 year old from the UK helping put British
swimming back on the Olympic map. So we’re now on the verge of this
year’s conclusion and the question is where will your
bets/allegiances/opposition be in 2009? Come down to the sports
section and let us know!
There are times when some of us make moral choices that we must reflect upon
for the rest of our lives; choices that we may take to our graves as regret or
enlightenment. What if those choices stayed with you forever with the face of
death being merely a separate reality? How could you live with those choices?
Durzo Blint is a wetboy of legend. Killing is an art and he is the cities most
accomplished artist. People whisper his name in fear and in awe. Children look up
to him, his adversaries hate and worship him and his “friends” fear him.
Why on earth would this man of legend want to take in an apprentice when he has
the world at his fingertips? That is because it is destined for him to eventually fail,
even as an immortal. He is a broken man and the woman he fell in love with
broke him, made him soft, and made him regret the moment he chose his
immortality over her. His immortality began to turn on him and him on his
apprentice.
Azoth is a guild rat. The scum of the earth; afraid of what he will do when his
guilds “Fist” finds out he doesn’t have the coppers to pay for that weeks dues.
Always afraid, always watching.
When he encounters Durzo he asks to apprentice himself to the legend. After a
few days and a few negotiations he accepted. But Azoth was Durzo’s, name,
body, and soul.
After many years or training under Durzo Azoth, now Kylar is becoming stronger
by the day. Yet…something inside him is yearning for more. Something wants
out but it has no way to get out. That is…unless Durzo gives it to him.
Unwillingly.
I won’t summarize the book for you all. I won’t explain to you the entire plot line.
This isn’t CliffsNotes. If I thought that this book was mediocre, I would tell you
every detail I could remember. However, I do that simply because I feel that this
book and trilogy should be bought and read by every sci-fi/fantasy, hell, every fan
of a good book, out there.
This story has characters so compelling that if it were not for the hints of magic
and mythical beasts I would have sworn they all once existed and this story had
parts of their biographies in it.
The action is intense. I mean, I am reading and going to the next word as fast as
my eyes can keep up. I have never been so visually stimulated by a book in my
life. Yes, I say visually because everything is painted for you in words. There is
no over use of descriptions; Just simple, easy and elaborate definitions of places,
people and events.
Azoth is someone you see grow to love and hate, he is despicable yet caring, he is
innocent and yet so very full of guilt. His history is nothing and his future is
endless. How can you not want to learn about him? How can you not fall in love
with his friends that he tries to protect and his enemies that he must destroy?
December 2008 Music Review
Regina Spector - Begin to Hope
To any music lover, it is well-known that an album is
something that can shape the soul and provide light in dark
paths. Begin to Hope is just that album. The album’s theme on
the whole is that of pain and remorse with bittersweet endings,
and yet, through each and every song, there is at the least a
sliver of hope. On the Radio is a song that exemplifies the
feelings of hope caressing the dark despair that accompanies
life. The song starts with a hard and high and semi-quick beat
and then melds into a soft and slow beat such of that as a
heartbeat. Then Spector's sweet voice comes on stating, "This
is how it works, It feels a little worse, Than when we drove
our hearse, Right through that screaming crowd, While
laughing up a storm , Until we were just bone, Until it got so
warm, That none of us could sleep, And all the styrofoam,
Began to melt away, We tried to find some words, To aid in
the decay, But none of them were home, Inside their catacomb
A million ancient bees, Began to sting our knees, While we
were on our knees, Praying that disease, Would leave the ones
we love, And never come again." These odd and fantastic
lyrics, resound the theme of the entire album. Through cheers
and jeers, hard times happen and familiar lives melt away into
what can be seen as ancient memories. And departure from
people and places is not only a common happenstance, but a
hard fact of life.
Tough, keeping in line with the theme, Spector writes at the
end of Radio, "No, this is how it works, You peer inside
yourself, You take the things you like, And try to love the
things you took, And then you take that love you made And
stick it into some, Someone else's heart, Pumping someone
else's blood, And walking arm in arm You hope it don't get
harmed, But even if it does, You'll just do it all again."
By 4thseal
Thus, even when we do get harmed, hope keeps us going. Hope is what keeps us continually peering inside yourself, and hope is what moves us
forward, when the times get tough, and harm seems to be all there is. And, all along the way, there is a bittersweet sound playing softly in the
background, one of low and slow beats and yet strongly powerful and fluid - moving the listener's ears, mind, and soul through the song and into
a place of at the least a tiny bit of sh**, of hope.
Begin to Hope contains thirteen other songs alongside Fidelity and On the Radio. They are as follows: Apres Mio, Better, Edit, Field Below,
Hotel Song, Lady, Samson, Summer in the City, That Time, 20 years of Snow. Each and every one of these songs carry Spector's lyrical style, with
her voice becoming much more than a tool for words but a grand musical instrument, and her impressive piano playing where each beat seems to
be played exactly on time. Yet remarkably, each song is vastly different in sound, approach, and style, giving the entire album a brevity hardly
seen and highly enjoyable. Still, each song carries the message of hope with hardship, which at times can be very hard to find, but can be easily
found in the soft background of this album and life.
"I never loved nobody fully, Always one foot on the ground, And by protecting my
heart truly, I got lost in the sounds, I hear in my mind, All these voices, I hear in
my mind all these words, I hear in my mind all this music." ~Regina Spektor -
December 2008 Advice
Dear Cuddles,
I have exhausted my other options so have now sunk to a new low -
writing to my favorite misanthrope masquerading as an advice columnist.
Please treat me kindly. The past few months I have been unable to shake
a crippling ennui that has hit me at the worst time possible. I have many
very large life decisions that I am being pressured to resolve within the
near future, yet I can not seem to give them the care and attention they
deserve. These are issues that will affect every aspect of my life, yet I
am unable to rouse myself to take any action one way or the other. The
only time I give any attention to the matters at hand is when I am forced
to and then it erupts in more problems since my disinterest and seeming
lack of concern appear hostile, cruel, unreasonable, and rude to others.
I originally thought I would just wait it out, that the listlessness would
pass and I would be able to make the decisions I needed to at that point.
It has been made clear to me, however, that I do not have the luxury of
time. This realization has been a slap in the face. I am not completely
numb or apathetic; I’ve been very anxious, tense, and depressed over the
situation, yet when it comes down to it, I always find myself unable to
develop any actual opinion or care about the issues. And I am very
worried about being forced to make a decision while feeling this way
and then regretting it later when I am feeling more like myself.
I do realize that this may be a coping mechanism I am subconsciously
using to keep myself from having to make any hard decisions. Even if
that is the case though, I don’t know what to do about it. I just feel very
lost and hopeless lately. I realize I haven’t really asked any questions, I
suppose I am just hoping for some type of insight or advice either about,
well, any of this.
Thank you kindly,
You may be suffering from a sort of mild anxiety problem. As far as
trying to sort out your problems now, maybe you should try to make a
list of pros and cons for each choice you have. This way you can figure
out which would be choice for yourself. You should try and get excited
about these decisions if you feel it's interfering with your personal life.
Try and find little ways to motivate yourself. A good way, I find, is a
reward system. Each time you make a choice that is both sound and sits
well with, you do something you don't get to enjoy often or go have your
favorite food. It's a type of learning that can help you to not only make
your choices, but it'll help you to want to make them. In the end you
have to keep a cool head and remember only you really know what’s
best for you, hopefully this serves as somewhat of a guide to get you
going, you have my best wishes.
Ask Cuddles
Dear Cuddles,
By Fresh1
Within what has been literally a week, I have lost both my marriage and
my job. This really wasn't my doing and was brought about it very hard
and tragic ways. Both these things where very sh***y, and involved
some not-so-very nice scumbags. So I am here at my last day of work,
waiting to get fired just as an outlaw waits for the bullets from the firing
squad to end his miserable yet exciting existence. And! I have a lot of
rage in me somewhat. I am pissed. Any suggestions on how I can
release my rage in a healthy and not-too-crazy way?
Sincerely,
OMFG
First, talk to your best friend or someone you trust about what all you've
been through and maybe your friend will give you some suggestions.
Most likely you will still feel angry afterwards, so find something that
you love to do to relax like seeing a movie or playing video games. That
helps me. Just find a space to think in perspective to your life and what
to do next. It might also help if you wrote a list down as your plan of
action, a "to do list" to help you get through this step by step. However,
another thing that could help with your rage is to express it through
maybe something like martial arts or even just primal scream therapy.
It's not good to hold that anger inside and fighting is the best way, in
terms of human behavior, to release anger and pent up stress. Not only
does it channel out your negative energy, but jackasses will be less
inclined to mess with you in the first place.
Humor Report
By Ravi
4 Reasons I Hate this Video
Humor
http://www.narutomania.com/forums/humor-zone/dragon-lives-again-1976-a-100648.html#post3112731
Before you continue reading this article, it might be wise to actually watch the video first. (Click the link, whizkids) This
will all start making a lot more sense. Okay, I admit, actually watching the video might be a little much but at least skim
through it! Okay?! Deal.
Reason 1: You should know what’s really going o- wait, is that
Bruce Lee?
Let me give you the low-down, the snoop, the filthy scoop, the
shtick, it is not Bruce Lee. He doesn’t even look like Bruce Lee!
Why on earth would you think that’s Bruce Lee in the first place?
He doesn’t talk like Bruce Lee (actually, he doesn’t talk at all), he
doesn’t Kung-fu like Bruce Lee, he doesn’t do thumb push-ups like
Bruce Lee and he certainly doesn’t throw grains of rice up into the
air to catch them in mid-flight using chopsticks like Bruce Lee.
Sure, he’s a hired actor/impersonator to imitate the Fighting God.
But Bruce Leung is a spasm of a country trying to save a recently
deceased nationwide icon. That’s why I want nothing to do with this
video. Well that, and because, you know, somewhere far beyond the
grave, Bruce might be preparing to kick ass and rectify this
blasphemy.
Reason 2: The mummies in the background.
Remember the days when you were a kid and you would rush home
to watch the latest Power Rangers with your bestest of buddies?
Those were the days, eh? And surely you remember the tightly
dressed gimps dancing in the background?! (No, not the ones in the
front with the colours...) The ones in the back, dancing in their
leotards as if they’re tripping balls on crack. You know, I never
noticed them too, until I actually watched an episode when I was
older. Boy, was that confusing. The best part is when they keep
dancing to wait their turn to get raped in a one-on-one fight with of
the Rangers. I kept hoping one of the gimps would grow some
street-smarts and decide to shank Red Ranger. Then everyone’d
scatter back to the ghetto like the crack-junkies they are. And that’s
exactly what those mummies are doing. They act bat-shit crazy and
laugh while they see their companions getting slaughtered by Bruce
Leung like a bunch of assholes, until it’s their turn to step into the
one-on-one Ring of Doom. Suddenly they’re awfully skittish for
4000 year old corpses.
Reason 3: I think Popeye went to dancing school.
I hope I wasn’t the only one looking away when Popeye started slobbering
that green stuff down his throat. That man seriously needs to learn some
table manners. Okay, given I’d be in a hurry to eat too when I’m surrounded
by a bunch of mummies trying to pelvic thrust my face. But that does not
take away the fact that Asians get shifty when they’re close to any type of
ordinary cutlery. Yet, surely we could cut our favourite merry sailor some
slack? He’s been our whistling friends ever since we were little. So let’s
forget he’s giggling like an idiot. Let’s forget Popeye looks like, and is in
fact, a gook. Hell, let’s forget all about why he’s fighting equally retarded
mummies in the first place. Because our beloved brawly sailor is fighting as
if he’s wearing oven mitts and a goddamned tutu.
My deepest fears have come true: not only is Popeye in a live-action movie,
he’s in it like a mentally handicapped sailor trying to do a plié.
That’s it Popeye! Show Broadway you put the soul in the dance!!
Reason 4: Where’s Lo-Pan?
WHERE IS LO-PAN? I don’t see Lo-Pan! I don’t see him majestically
strutting his stuff. I don’t even see him in the background. I’m serious,
guys! Everyone knows a Kung Fu spin-off is never complete without His
Moustached Majesty. Any man who spends 2000 years as a death-bringing
ghost to find his special green-eyed lady to transcend his conveniently
immortal ghost form into the material plane, only to get Hollywood actor
Kurt Russell to tomahawk you to death with a knife the very instant you get
there is a pretty cool guy in my book. First he’s able to pass through walls
and kill with his Confucius mind-magic, now he’s able to play Tick Tack
Toe with Buddha or whatever God you pagans use in China.
Man, he didn’t even get the chance to sex his wife. Just give him a small
role in all Kung Fu spin-offs. It’s all I’m saying.
Yaio Randomness
A Day in the Life of a Yaoi Fangril
Saturday, November 1
10:00 AM – It’s Saturday morning, and I drive to school to read some
research papers. I notice my labmates’ cars in the parking lot. Figures
they’d be here. I also see our advisor’s car. I hope he brought us treats
since it’s the day after Halloween.
10:05 AM – I arrive at our graduate student office and greet a labmate
(henceforth known as “Bob”) sitting in front of a computer. The other
labmate, “Cole,” is in a meeting with our advisor. Sitting on the table are
two coffee cups from Panera. Awwww, how cute. They went to Panera
together like a married couple. Oh yeah…Dr. G brought us leftover
Halloween candy. And not the good kind.
11:00 AM – I’ve read three papers already and I’m bored. I turn on my
laptop and change my Dino x Hibari desktop to a hot yaoi one that Drak
gave to me (I think). I minimize the internet browser to have a good look
at my desktop wallpaper. The biggest complaint I get from people about
my laptop is that I have too many icons. I want more of this steamy view
so I take this time to clean up the area.
11:15 AM – Cole returns from his meeting. The three of us chitchat about
random things. Dr. G walks into the room and converses with Bob. Sh**,
he’s in a position to see my wallpaper. Up goes the internet browsing
window. I hear Cole stifling his laughter and Dr. G asking if there’s
something wrong. Nothing, I say, though probably not in a convincing
way. Dr. G asks me for recommendations on local Oriental restaurants. I
confess I can’t give him any because I haven’t eaten at any in town since
1) I’m cheap and 2) Mom’s cooking is better and less fatty.
11:20 AM – Dr. G retreats to his office, and Cole makes fun of me for
almost being caught. I change my wallpaper again to commemorate the
Prince of Tennis sequel starting next year. This time, it’s Atobe x
Oshitari. It’s safe…enough.
1:00 PM – After lunch at the food court in the local mall, we return to
school and do our work. In my case, I stare at text, highlight seemingly
important stuff, and think about how I can make Vongola I get into
Vongola X’s pants in one of my upcoming fanfictions.
4:30 PM – I go back to my apartment and take a nap.
By Batman555
6:30 PM – Ikoku Irokoi Romantan OVA 2 subs have recently been
released. I watch this during dinner. I don’t really care about the love
story; I just want to hear Suwabe Junichi’s voice and to see some
yaoi. To put it in mainstream perspective, it features the voices of a
soft-spoken Grimmjow and Renji having sex. Ooops, did I ruin
Bleach for you?
7:00 PM – Still on the yaoi high, I watch the second episode of Junjou
Romantica 2. The main couple is the most boring to me. But I like the
idea of having the older brother trying to steal the token uke.
7:30 PM – I want more Suwabe so I watch episode 4 of Vampire
Knight Guilty. He has no speaking part in this episode? WTF?! Oh
well. I then entertain the thought of a new couple: Kaname x Aidou.
And Ichijou’s grandfather is really sexy. I kid you not.
8:30 – 9:30 PM – I catch up on Chaos;Head and Nodame Cantabile:
Paris Hen.
9:30 – 10:30 PM – I read a few more research papers. Looking at my
desktop wallpaper, I am reminded to catch up on Prince of Tennis
fanfiction. I really hope Ryoma’s hot in the upcoming sequel.
10:30 PM – My eyes fall on an “S” in a formula in one of the journal
articles. Oh yeah…I still need to read the Xanxus x Squalo doujinshi I
downloaded last week.
10:35 PM – I suddenly get an inspiration to chronicle this day for the
Newsletter.
12:00 AM – After being distracted by /cm/ and /y/ at 4chan for a little
bit, I finally finish writing. Time for bed.
12:10 AM – Hey! It’s Daylight Savings Time, isn’t it?
11:11 PM – Well, I still have another hour and I’m back in front of
the computer. Now’s a good time to catch up on Katekyo Hitman
Reborn! yaoi.
