2000<br />
<strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Union</strong> led all <strong>of</strong> Division III in scoring (49.1 ppg) and total <strong>of</strong>fense (530.0 ypg)<br />
during the regular season on its way to winning a fifth National Title in eight years. The Purple<br />
Raiders were never seriously challenged in the fourth quarter until Stagg Bowl XVII when<br />
they marched 65 yards on 11 plays culminating in a Rod Chenos 20-yard field goal with :01<br />
second on the clock, earning a 10-7 win over Saint John’s (MN). The ground-game took hold<br />
in ’00 as Chuck Moore had 263 attempts for 1,647 yards and 27 touchdowns while runningmate<br />
Dan Pugh totaled 985 yards rushing on 185 attempts with 16 scores. Quarterback<br />
Gary Smeck, who finished his career 40-1 as a starter (.976), was 264-<strong>of</strong>-381 (.693) for<br />
3,793 yards, 38 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His favorite target, wide receiver Adam<br />
Marino, hauled in 110 passes for 1,643 yards and 18 touchdowns.<br />
Defensively, outside linebacker Jesse Pearson had 106 hits, inside linebacker Matt<br />
LaVerde finished with 81 hits, 11 tackles for loss and four interceptions, outside linebacker<br />
Jason Perkins totaled 78 hits and 15 tackles for loss, and cornerback Chris Kern had 63 hits,<br />
six interceptions and 18 passes broken up.<br />

helped propel the Raiders to an unprecedented sixth division iii National championship.<br />
2001<br />
The Raiders won back-to-back National Titles for the second time while finishing second<br />
in the nation in <strong>of</strong>fense (518.1 ypg), third in fewest points allowed (8.6 ppg) and fourth<br />
overall in team defense (216.1 ypg) during regular season play. Running back Chuck Moore<br />
led the way, earning Player <strong>of</strong> the Year honors as he rushed for 2,349 yards on 319 carries –<br />
good for a 7.4 yard per carry average with 30 rushing scores. In the play<strong>of</strong>fs, he posted three<br />
straight 200 yard rushing games. Including play<strong>of</strong>fs, Moore rushed for 5,871 yards in his<br />
Raider career. Teammate Dan Pugh finished with 843 yards on 172 touches with 13 rushing<br />
touchdowns. Quarterback Rob Adamson completed 188 <strong>of</strong> 296 attempts (.635) for 3,056<br />
yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Wide receiver Jason Candle totaled 62<br />
receptions for 1,277 yards and 12 touchdowns.<br />
Defensively, end Matt Campbell had 83 hits, 20 tackles for loss, nine sacks and two<br />
interceptions, outside linebacker Jason Perkins finished with 81 hits and 12 tackles for loss,<br />
and end Todd Braden totaled 69 hits, 22 tackles for loss and 12 sacks.<br />
<strong>Mount</strong> union’s defense held Saint John’s (MN) to one second quarter touchdown and 207 total yards <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>fense in the 2000 Stagg Bowl.<br />
