Thanks to Seattle Humane Society’s
Life-Saver Program and people
like you who support our work, we were
able to rescue Tip Toe and her unborn
pups — just in time. Tip Toe, a very pregnant
2-year-old Terrier, was in a condition that
many animal shelters would consider “not
adoptable.” Not only did she need extra
care and space to deliver her litter safely,
she also needed time to nurse her newborn
puppies until they were old enough to eat
on their own. Surrendered to a rural shelter
that didn’t have the medical or financial
resources to care for her in her fragile state,
Tip Toe was at risk of being put down.
In 2012, Seattle Humane rescued 2,685
animals like Tip Toe from dire circumstances
through this incredible program, including
1,296 dogs, 1,374 cats, and 15 critters.
At our shelter, animals stay with us for as
long as it takes for us to find them a home.
Without our Life-Saver Program, Tip Toe
and her puppies wouldn’t have stood a
chance. Thanks to our extensive Foster
Care Program, we were able to immediately
place Tip Toe in a volunteer foster home
with Crystal Laridon. Just two days later,
Tip Toe gave birth to five healthy puppies:
Harvey, Brock, Tattoo, Nugget, and Coco
Bear. Two months later when the pups were
old enough to be adopted, we found homes
for the whole brood, and Tip Toe got a home
for the holidays one week before Christmas.
to learn how many shelters throughout the county are just overwhelmed with animals
and that most of them don’t have either the funds or the space to keep them all,” says
Amy. “We know that there’s no way we could save every animal in need, but as we left
it felt so good to know that we saved 45 dogs and we really got to know all of them
personally. I think our kids will remember this trip forever.”
The trip was so successful that we’ve decided to auction it off again at this year’s
Tuxes & Tails on May 11, 2013. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this once-ina-lifetime
experience. Learn more and get your tickets today at tuxesandtails.org.
“Our Life-Saver Program doesn’t just save
the animals who have run out of time. It also
opens up a space for another homeless pet
in need of shelter,” says CEO David Loewe.
“Whenever we have available space in our
shelter, we reach out to the animal welfare
community in Washington first to see how we
can help. If we still have space, we then offer
help to animals in out-of-state shelters with
exceptionally high populations of homeless
animals and tragic euthanasia rates.”
At last year’s Tuxes & Tails fundraising gala,
animal-loving guests bid on the opportunity
to join Seattle Humane staff on a life-saving
transfer trip to Los Angeles. Amy and KD
Hallman, and Michele and Kyle Peltonen,
were the successful bidders and helped
on a mission to transfer 45 dogs to the
Seattle Humane Society. Amy and KD also
brought along their 10-year-old twins. “We
are a family of animal lovers and our twins,
Cameron and Sydney, organized a pet food
fundraiser for Seattle Humane last year, but
they wanted to do more,” says Amy. “When
this experience was up for auction at Tuxes
& Tails, we knew we had to bid on it.”
While the adults helped load and secure the
45 dogs for transport, Cameron and Sydney
helped scan their microchips. “It was sad
