Happy Tails Tulip's story Tulip, an adorable 6-year-old Shih Tzu mix, is the kind of little lap dog you see nestled up with their person at a café or playing in the park with their family. But instead, Tulip was found fending for herself on the streets, covered in dirt and suffering from severe dental disease that caused chronic pain. Tulip was brought to the Seattle Humane Society where we never turn away a pet in need of extra care. Our veterinarians performed immediate surgery, removing fourteen of Tulip’s teeth and cleaning and polishing the rest. After surgery and a good bath, Tulip was feeling better and looking more like her adorable self. Our veterinary team spayed, microchipped and vaccinated her. Tulip was then available for adoption on the MaxMobile, where she met her new family. Tulip is now a happy pup and healthy thanks to Seattle Humane's Lexus Fund. The MaxMobile is Seattle Humane’s 38-foot bright yellow adoption bus that brings adoptable dogs and cats to stores, festivals, and farmers markets for on-the-spot adoptions. Denise was shopping at Whole Foods in Redmond when she spotted The Max. “My daughter and I have always enjoyed looking at the pets aboard The Max whenever we see it. We just never felt like there was one we couldn’t live without…until Tulip,” says Denise. “When we saw her we knew that we couldn’t walk away without her. M isty and Silverlight’s story Misty and Silverlight were nursed back to health in one of Seattle Humane's loving foster homes. Misty and Silverlight, brother and sister kittens, were abandoned at just two weeks old. An animal lover found the severely dehydrated and ill kittens on the streets and rushed them to Seattle Humane. As our veterinarians suspected, the kittens tested positive for feline panleukopenia virus (FPV). FPV proves fatal to 95 percent of kittens two months old or younger, and testing positive would have been a death sentence at most shelters. But thanks to our incredible foster care volunteers and the generous donors who support our work, we were able to give Misty and Silverlight a second chance at life. We placed the pair in a foster home with longtime volunteer Heather McCrone, who has fostered more than 50 of our shelter pets, including more than 40 underage kittens. Heather cared for Misty and Silverlight around the clock, feeding them with a syringe every two hours, bathing them, keeping them warm and bringing them to Seattle Humane for fluids. “I did a lot of laundry, lost a lot of sleep, and said a lot of prayers,” recalls Heather. After three long weeks, Misty and Silverlight began to pull through. They gained weight, started to groom themselves and play. Misty and Silverlight recovered from FPV thanks to the teamwork of their foster mom and our veterinary staff. They grew up to be very affectionate and closely bonded. When they had fully recovered, the siblings were placed up for adoption and went home with a great family within a few hours. “It was the best possible outcome for these loving kittens who wouldn’t have had a chance at most other shelters,” says Heather. Misty and Silverlight were adopted in December, just in time to have a home for the holidays…together. 8
Hi! The Pooch Post & Mew Mail I just wanted to drop a note to thank your entire staff for such a great experience when I came in to adopt a cat! I came in nervous and excited, with a fairly specific cat in mind, but with an open heart. I knew that the right cat and I would find each other and I knew it was Pork Chop the instant we met! I very happily took him home. Now, almost 48 hours later, I thought I would give you a quick update: Pork Chop follows me like a shadow, sleeps at the end of my bed, and has been loving and affectionate beyond my hopes and dreams! I feel it was truly a match made in heaven. Your staff is obviously caring and dedicated. My experience was fun and enlightening. I was determined NOT to adopt an FIV+ cat out of fear of illness and extra expense and I wouldn’t have chosen Pork Chop had you not explained the disease to me. I would have missed out on the perfect companion for me, and for him! He will never, ever want for anything, especially love. Thank you so much for all you do, you are angels on earth! Linda P. Dear Seattle Humane, While Bowmen is usually a ball of energy, sometimes we are successful at wearing him out and can catch some sweet, sleepy moments. If this picture isn’t an advertisement for this misunderstood breed, I don’t know what is! Before coming to Seattle Humane, I never would have considered getting a Pit Bull mix. But I am so glad you introduced us to Bowmen. My family and I are super in love! He is so smart and I’m amazed at some of the things he comes up with on his own (like taking a Kong up a flight of stairs and hurling it down in an attempt to free some treats). He has been great at learning new commands but more importantly, he is such a lover boy. I just wanted to let you know we are in love with a Pit Bull… and we may be back for another!
