Seafair Referees - Meet one of our officials Since some of you parents and coaches feel compelled to yell at and criJcize our referees, we thought you should know something about them and hear what they have to say. S E A F A I R M I N O R H O C K E Y A S S O C I A T I O N N E W S L E T T E R Seafair Volunteer Appreciation Night Luke Birch, Atom A3 coach, won the Junior Coach of the Year, which is given annually to the top coach from H1-Atom. Shane Hohlweg (right) was the recipient of this year’s Peggy Maskant Award, which is awarded annually to the volunteer to has done a lot of the association. This year, Shane served as vicepresident and coach co-ordinator for SMHA, and coached his two kids’ hockey teams (H2 and H4). Shane also spearheaded the formation of the ‘Ice Breakers’ spring program and will be coaching one of the 2001 spring teams. Nigel Shackles (left) won this years Meritorious Service Award for his many years of service as team manager and H1-4 division manager. Also winning the Meritorious Service Award was Kim Kemp, who has served as Seafair’s RACA rep for many years. Madeline Wong won Manager of the Year and Ben Chen won Rookie Coach of the Year. Both were with the Atom C5 team this year. Peter Reynolds, Peewee C3 coach, won the Senior Coach of the Year award, which is given annually to the top coach from Peewee to Juvenile. Did You Know??? Players who play for one team for their entire career are rare these days. But two players went to the extreme to counter this. Goalie Rick Tabaracci played for six different teams in one season (1999-‐2000), ping ponging between the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers and Colorado Avalanche, the IHL’s Cleveland Lumberjacks, Orlando Solar Bears and Utah Grizzlies, and Canada’s World Hockey Championship team. During his career, Mike Sillinger played for 12 different NHL teams (Detroit, Columbus, NY Islanders, St. Louis, Nashville, Vancouver, Anaheim, Tampa, Philadelphia, Florida, Phoenix and Ottawa).
