SSHRC GRANT FOR THE
CANADIAN JOURNAL OF
WOMEN AND THE LAW/
REVUE FEEMES ET DROIT
The Canadian Journal of Woman
and the Law, under the editorship of
Professor Debra Parkes, has received
grant funds totalling $70,800 over
three years from the Social Sciences
and Humanities Research Council’s
Aid to Scholarly Journals. These
funds will go to support the journal’s
editorial and publication costs, as
well as special projects focused on
developing new scholarship.
The CJWL is the only Canadian
journal devoted entirely to
publishing and disseminating a
diverse and multi-disciplinary range
of scholarship in the field of women’s
legal studies. Since 2009 it has
been housed at Robson Hall under
the English Language Editorship
of Professor Debra Parkes. Second
year Robson Hall student, Elizabeth
Mitchell, serves as the student editor,
and other law students volunteer as
citation checkers for the CJWL.
The CJWL is a bilingual journal,
with Professor Annie Rochette
(UQAM) serving as French Language
Editor. A sampling of recent articles
published in the CJWL includes
a feminist perspective on carbon
taxes, a study of transgender
identity politics in contemporary
films, and an examination of marital
rape laws in Ghana through the
lenses of international human rights
law and Canadian equality law.
SSHRC GRANT FOR
CREATING SAFE SCHOOLS
Professor Dr. Donn Short of the
Faculty of Law, together with
Principal Investigator Catherine
Taylor, Faculty of Education,
University of Winnipeg, and
researchers Tracey Peter,
Department of Sociology, Janice
Ristock, Associate VP Research/
Women’s & Gender Studies,
University of Manitoba, and
Elizabeth Meyer, Department of
Education, Concordia University, are
recipients of a multi-year standard
research grant in the amount of
$219,000 from the Social Sciences
and Humanities Research Council.
The study is of teachers’ perspectives
and experiences on homophobia
and transphobia in Canadian
schools in grades 7 through 12.
It is widely recognized by
researchers and educators that
bullying and discrimination on
the basis of sexual minority and
transgender identity are major
barriers to the achievement of safe
and respectful school cultures. The
researchers hope that the findings
of the study will contribute to
the literature on safe schools and
help to inform efforts to develop
more intersectional and effective
approaches to diversity and antioppressive
education at the levels of
pedagogy, curriculum, institutional
supports, and regulation.
