President’s Message
W
elcome to Universal Music Publishing Group's first
newsletter. It is our desire to provide you with a
colorful and easy to read information piece that tells
the story of our newly formed global publishing operation
and highlights some of the main strengths of our company
including -- our people, our talent, our catalog and our
administrative systems.
We have assembled a global staff operating in 43 offices
in 36 territories that is amongst the finest in our business.
Whether it is in the area of helping to
negotiate international M.O.U.s that set
the pace of industry agreements, or the
strength of our Film and TV Department,
or the far reach and success of our creative
staff, Universal Music Publishing
Group is now perceived as a global
leader.
Regarding our talent, we are fortunate
to have in our "family" some of the biggest
selling artists in the industry, as well as
some of the most important local talent
including: Brian McKnight, Shania Twain,
U2, The Corrs, No Doubt, 3 Doors Down,
Godsmack, Ice Cube, Chemical Brothers,
Fatboy Slim, Alanis Morissette, and
Vengaboys. Our songwriters are achieving
amazing success as we've recently been named the No.
1 Country Singles publisher in Billboard with back to back
No. 1 hits for Faith Hill, George Strait, and Lee Ann
Womack. UMPG writers continue to have songs on major
selling albums including new releases by Whitney Houston,
Sisqo, Ricky Martin, and Christina Aguilera. We also lead in
such exciting areas as Latin Music, as we are ASCAP's Latin
Publisher's of the Year (with Latin Writer of the Year, Rudy
Perez) for the second year in a row!
At the backbone of our publishing company is its catalog,
and we are fortunate to have a
breadth of repertoire covering
every major genre of music from
every era. Our catalog contains
such prestigious names as works
by Leonard Bernstein, Jerome
Kern, Henry Mancini, Steely Dan,
Lynard Skynard, Jimmy McHugh,
and ABBA amongst others.
As a result of
our close ties and
aggressive mar-
David Renzer
keting to all major
film studios and production companies,
Universal Music Publishing Group is currently
represented with music in over 60% of
all major soundtracks and over 60 top box
office releases. UMPG Film and TV creative
services staffs around the world also pursue
marketing opportunities through our sister
companies (Universal, UME, UM3,
Universal Studios) as well as make the most
of compilation and re-release opportunities.
Our unique administrative systems also
give us a competitive edge. While allowing
us to register our songs electronically on a
global basis, our highly efficient 3-Hub system yields faster,
more accurate royalty payments for our songwriters.
Looking to the future, our newly launched New Media
Department continues to put us at the cutting edge of marketing
our songwriters and catalog through such areas as
our e-newsletter, our soon to be launched new web site, and
strategic alliances with other e-companies.
All of the above will continue to position Universal as the
world's new global leader! We hope you enjoy the newsletter,
find it informative and we welcome your feedback.
PLATINUM MARK
Band is first to be No. 1 at 4 formats
New UMPG signing 3 Doors Down shot to the No. 1 position of
both Billboard's Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock, Heritage
Rock and Active Rock charts for 3 weeks in a row with their first
single,"Kryptonite." This is the first time a band has been No. 1
in 4 formats. Their debut album, The Better Life
(Republic/Universal), was Certified Platinum 13 weeks after its
release in February. Both singles, “Kryptonite,” and “Loser”
Mega-Hit LP’s
BRIAN McKNIGHT
Released in June 1999,
Brian McKnight's LP,
Back At One, has been
a major hit, generating
sales of over 2.1 million
units. His first single,
"Back At One," was an R&B and Pop
chart topper. Nearly a year later, Marc
Wills' country cover of the single, "Back
At One," also went to the top of R&R's
Country Chart.
McKnight’s material continues to be
represented on 5 Billboard charts
including: Hot 100 Singles Chart (“Back
At One”); Top R&B Albums; The
Billboard 200; R&B Hip-Hop Singles
Chart (“6,8,12”); and Top R&B Albums.
As his current single, “6, 8, 12,” still
gets attention, McKnight currently has a
release on the Nutty Professor II: The
Klumps soundtrack. He also recently
produced new music for the ABC
drama series City of Angels, which
stars Blair Underwood.
D’Angelo
Released on 1/18/00,
D'Angelo's new platinum
selling album, Voodoo
(Virgin), debuted at No. 1
on the Billboard Top 200.
The first single,
"Untitled” (How Does It
Feel), went to No. 2 on
R&R's Urban AC charts
and No. 4 on R&R's
Urban Top 50.
GODSMACK
UMPG’s Godsmack has had enormous success with
their self-titled, debut LP (Republic/ Universal), which is
nearing triple platinum. Their three consecutive R&R Top
5 rock tracks include: "Whatever" (which broke records
for most consecutive weeks on Billboard Active Rock
chart), "Keep Away," and "Voodoo" (Active Rock Top 5
and Alternative Top 10).
SWEDEN/SCANDINAVIA
signing the right local artists and
writers, UMPG Sweden is No. 1 in
terms of local repertoire with a substantial
Swedish language catalogue
of 68,000 Scandinavian copyrights
this year.
A*TEENS: Stockholm Records
debuted on Sweden's album chart
at No. 1 with their tribute LP, The
ABBA Generation, which has sold
A*Teens
1.7 million copies worldwide. (The
first single, "Dancing Queen" gained
momentum in May with play on Box Breaker and MTV for the U.S. 5/23 LP
release.) Conversely, the original ABBA's Gold LP, sold nearly 4 million units
SPANISH FLY
Madrid -- In April, UMPG Spain had controlling interest in 25 of the
top 50 albums. Five local artists were recently Top 50 on the
Spanish Album Chart: Hot Gibraltar rock band, Melon Diesel,
whose platinum, debut LP, La Cuesta de Mr. Bond (Sony), peaked
at No. 8; Maria Dolores Predera, whose album, As de Corazones
Remedios Amaya, whose LP, Gitana Soy (EMI), peaked at No. 31;
platinum.
Recently, local signing Los Suaves climbed Spain's album
charts to No. 8 with the LP, Vispera De Todos Los Santos
(Universal). This is the best position this veteran band has ever had
in the albums chart. The label predicts the album is bound for Gold
status. Strong local new entries on the singles chart come from
Monica Naranjo's single, "Minage" (Sony), which went to No. 1 and
Nana Pastori's "Canailla," (BMG) which peaked at No. 2.
Industry Issues
Q&A with
Crispin Evans
Crispin Evans is Universal Music Publishing Group’s
Senior V.P. of International Legal and Business
Affairs.
Crispin Evans
Question I: Crispin, you were instrumental in the negotiations
that led to the Cannes Accord. Can you give
us an update as to what this achieved and what you
see as the future for this agreement?
Answer: The Cannes Agreement has, in my view,
achieved a number of positive results. Not only have
European copyright societies brought down the levels of
their commissions, but this has been done without any
deterioration of services. The societies now operate in a
more transparent manner in a number of different regards
and the levels of administration have improved. I do not
wish to paint a completely rosy picture however. There are
still a number of significant problems and we have a lot of
work to do to overcome these. Our objective is not antisociety
but is better descrived as trying to achieve transparent
cost benefits for ourselves and the writers that we
represent. So far as the future is concerned, the agreement
currently has about a year to go and we have already
commenced discussions about a continuation which will
incorporate a number of additional issues.
Question II: Can you give us an update on the BIEM/
IFPI negotiations?
Answer: The current BIEM/IFPI agreement is scheduled
to terminate at the end of June this year. Both organizations
have been in discussions concerning the future but
it is too early to say how these will turn out. However, I
know that a number of important issues have been aired.
Question III: What is the progress of the IMJV?
Answer: IMJV is a very significant process for all publishers
and the writers that they represent. This partnership
of ASCAP, MCPS/PRS and BUMA/STEMRA will provide
a back office administrative function which can be shared
between the societies without any reduction of rights
ownership of representation by the societies themselves.
If the business of exercising copyright on a national basis
were to begin today from a blank sheet of paper, it would
use this type of shared administrative system which is not
dissimilar in vision to systems belonging to credit card
companies, airlines, etc. The potential for cost-saving is
great and, of course, any benefit will be seen as additional
income for rights owners. At present the system is still
being designed by the Partnership and it is hoped that
they will move towards the build phase quite soon.
Question IV: What steps are being taken by Universal
Music Publishing Group to combat piracy on the
internet?
Answer: Our activities in this area are usually confined to
support of the copyright societies and their efforts on our
behalf. Of course when we find unauthorised users or
sites we attempt to have them stopped or taken down.
We have supported the initiatives of the various copyright
societies in terms of litigation and day to day policing.
As is well known, this is not an easy issue because
today’s pirate is likely to be tomorrow’s legitimate copyright
user and legitimate payer of royalties.
