BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM
In the Northern Adirondack Central School District we take bullying seriously and believe that every
student has the right to an environment where he/she feels safe and respected. Over the last year we have
worked hard to implement a district-wide, research-based bullying prevention program called Olweus. A
committee was established to help implement the program so we can appropriately address bullying when
it does occur, but most importantly, prevent it from happening at all.
It is time once again to give a survey to our students in grades 3-12. This 40 question survey will help
us understand our students’ perceptions of bullying. It will be given on December 11, 2012. All students
in grades 3-12 will participate unless you request that your child does not participate. If you do not want
your child participating in the survey please contact your child’s building
principal by Monday, December 10.
We will address bullying prevention in ALL grades. However, only grades 3-
12 will participate in the survey because of the level of reading and
comprehension required.
You will get more information throughout the year, but please call us anytime
you have questions or if you would like to look at the survey before it is given.
Thank you.
DECEMBER COMUNNITY SERVICE PROJECT
Our December Community Service Project is for the benefit of our neighbors in New York City who were greatly affected by the
devastation of Hurricane Sandy. As a school district, we would like to reach out to our fellow New Yorkers and lend our support for their
losses and hardship. Many of the students in the PS 42 school district have resorted to living in shelters as their homes and possessions
were washed away with the storm. We really want to help and need your help to
effectively make a difference in their lives.
We are looking for your thoughtful donations of the following items:

Monetary donations
Gently used or new books
Art supplies
Pencils, erasers and paper
Student-made cards offering hope and encouragement
Offers from the heart are greatly appreciated and will strengthen PS 42’s spirit. It will help them to know that we, as New Yorkers, are
united in friendship. Please send in your donations by Friday, December 14 if your wish to participate. Please join us in helping any way
you can...together, we can make a difference in our community!
OTHER WAYS TO HELP OUT...
Make a Wish ~ Adopt an Angel—The Christmas shopping season is in full swing, and while you’re out in one of the many busy malls
searching for those perfect gifts, don’t forget to help children with life threatening illnesses. Adopt an Angel for the Make A Wish
Foundation of Northeastern New York. The local campaign is to help grant wishes right here in the 518 area code. You can Adopt An
Angel right here at our school district. Angels are available to be purchased in the elementary office for $1. Please send the money in an
envelope for the amount of angels you would like purchase, clearly marked with your child’s name.
Coupons for Soldiers—We will be collecting the coupons for soldiers throughout the school year. The coupons will be distributed to
bases where the cost of living is high. The coupons help our military families by cutting the costs of their groceries. Only manufacturer’s
coupons are accepted and they can even be expired (no more than 4 months). A helpful hint:

Cut and trim the sides of the coupons. This is not only helpful to the receiving centers, but we do not want to pay postage on
excess weight.
There are many ways that one individual can make a large difference to so many. What a treasure it is to know that our expired coupons
can mean a real difference to the families who have dedicated and sacrificed a part of their lives for the sake of our country. You may
send in coupons with your child at any time. To date we have collected coupons totaling $2170.70 which has been sent to our military.
Way to go NAC Elementary!!
Ronald McDonald House Charities ~ Pull Tabs—Collecting pull tabs is a great way to teach kids about philanthropy and the
importance of recycling, and raise funds to help children and their families at the same time. Ronald McDonald Houses collect pull tabs
instead of entire aluminum cans because it's more hygienic to store tabs than cans, and collection and storage is easier. The program is an
easy way for people of all ages to support RMHC and know they are making a difference for families and children. After the tabs are
collected, the local RMHC Chapter brings the collection to a scrap metal recycling center in Vermont, where they are weighed to
determine their value (values can vary significantly). The recycling center then sends the local RMHC Chapter a check for the total
value. The funds are used to pay for lodging for guests unable to pay. We find that one out of every four families is unable to pay for their
lodging expenses at RMH. The Ronald McDonald House thanks you for your help so that many children and families will benefit
directly from your efforts.
FIRST STEPS PROGRAM
The Title Team, in cooperation with Mountain Lake
PBS, primary teachers and support service staff are
organizing NAC’s tenth “First Steps Program”. This
program is offered to any resident of the district that has
a child coming to school in the fall of 2013.
The program is divided into five (5) sessions. Each
session is devoted to a different early learning topic.
Participants will receive free books and other items and
information that can be used at home to work with their
child. If you have not been contacted about First Steps,
please contact Shawn Matthews or Rebecca Trombley at
594-3986.
