SENIOR SCHOOL
Co-Curricular Character
Our students come to Prince Alfred College for an
excellent, holistic education. In the Senior School our
focus upon maximising students’ academic learning
outcomes, is complimented by a breadth and depth of
‘co-curricular and extra-curricular’ (non-academic)
learning opportunities.
These opportunities include:

Leadership;
Service;
Music;
Performance; and
Sport
Summer Inter-Collegiate (Intercol) competitions between
Prince Alfred and St Peter’s Colleges began on Tuesday
April 2 this year with Tennis and concludes on
Wednesday April 10 with Badminton. Summer season
competition in these sports along with Water Polo,
Swimming, Cricket and Rowing is what constitutes
‘Summer Intercols’ at Princes. Technically, only ‘Firsts’
teams’ contests determine Intercol winners each year,
However, the heightened effort and awareness this week
each year, in all year levels and sports is always in
evidence.
Unlike many sports clubs, winning is not our only focus.
At Prince Alfred College sport (or music, debating,
service or leadership) is just one important aspect of a
much broader educational goal for our students. This
goal encompasses: participation, teamwork, humility in
victory and grace in defeat.
In short, our sporting goals must reflect our holistic
educational goals. That is, the development of good
character is always more important than victory alone.
Good luck to all students in all competition during
Summer Intercol week and sincere thanks to all their
coaches, managers and parents for the season just
ended.
Captains of our Intercol teams and Prefects from both
Colleges have lunch together before each Intercol
season to launch the week, encourage good competition
and confirm the strong relations that exist between both
communities. College Captain Simon Brown responded
in this vein on behalf of Princes at this season’s lunch
held on Monday 25 March.
It is with great pride that we encourage all students to
take part in College Co-Curricular competition at the
highest level of which each individuals is capable,
including Intercol sport.
