Dear Friends, 

I am honored to serve as the chairman of the Pennington 

Biomedical Research Foundation. The research of PBRC is 

more important than ever. Pennington has earned a worldwide 

reputation as a leader in finding ways to prevent today’s most 

serious diseases: diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer and 

dementia. Private philanthropy plays a critical role in supporting Pennington’s research 

programs.

recruiting and retaining the best and brightest scientists, and underwriting vital community 

and professional education programs that apply the advancements made at the Center. 

The PBRF board of directors proudly acknowledges the leadership and expertise of 

Dr. Claude Bouchard as he steps down as Executive Director after a nearly 11-year tenure. 

We are grateful that he will remain a vibrant force at the Center, returning to his research 

and focusing on a major research study. As Executive Director, Dr. Bouchard has led the 

Pennington Biomedical Research Center to international stature. He has enhanced the 

mission, scope, and breath of PBRC’s scientific contributions, including most notably the 

recruitment of a cadre of leading scientists and physician researchers. It is through his 

leadership that PBRC is poised for new discoveries in areas of disease prevention in chronic 

diseases which affect us all. Thank you, Dr. Bouchard. 

I hope you will agree that we cannot pause for a moment despite the challenging economic 

climate. To the contrary, we must seize this moment and opportunity to advance PBRC to 

the greatest degree possible. Our health, and the health of future generations, is dependent 

upon our success in doing so. For it is medical research that provides the hope that we 

can enjoy healthier lives. On the following pages, we recognize the many individuals,

During the past year we have reached several significant 

milestones, including construction of a new clinical 

research facility, final planning for an imaging center, 

leading the first statewide discussion on children’s obesity 

and launching a new research program in dementia to 

name but a few. As a donor and friend of the Pennington 

Biomedical Research Center and Foundation, your contributions have been invaluable in 

helping us reach these specific milestones and expand our overall research programs in 

nutrition, health and preventive medicine. I thank you wholeheartedly on behalf of the 

Center’s faculty and staff for your confidence and support. 

Our deepest appreciation goes to the men and women who serve on the board and on 

volunteer fundraising committees who are engaged in the task of creating endowed chairs and 

professorships, raising funds for specific projects such as the Institute for Dementia Research 

and Prevention and the children’s health initiative, as well as garnering support for critical 

unrestricted funds. John Noland and now Tim Barfield as Chairmen of the Board, and Jennifer 

Winstead, President and CEO of the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation, have led the 

way in these efforts. We are appreciative of their dedication on our behalf. 

As my term as Executive Director comes to an end and I reflect on the past ten years, I am 

most grateful and honored by the support you have bestowed upon my colleagues and me. 

The Center has experienced significant growth throughout the past decade due in part to 

your devotion to our mission of promoting healthier lives through research and education 

in nutrition and preventive medicine. I am convinced that with your continued support, the 

Center has the potential to be the leading national player in this research arena. The Center is 

also well-positioned to make significant contributions to the welfare of our fellow citizens and

The comprehensive research programs at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center focus on key areas of 

research relating to Genomics and Molecular Genetics, Neurobiology, Neurodegeneration, Nutrient Sensing 

and Signaling, Stem Cell and Developmental Biology, Cancer, Diabetes, Obesity, Exercise and Health, and 

Epidemiology and Prevention. The Center’s ultimate goal is to prevent common diseases such as heart disease, 

obesity, diabetes, dementia, hypertension, and cancer, so that people can live healthier and fuller lives. 

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is uniquely positioned to acquire innovative knowledge and move 

it rapidly to a point that benefits society. It is called translational research. The Center pursues life-saving, lifeenhancing 

and health preserving knowledge in three broad arenas: basic science, clinical science, and population 

science. 

This range of research activities allows the Center to foster basic science discoveries, promote clinical 

applications and encourage the translation of the findings to the population at large. 

Pennington scientists are seeking answers to the many terrible diseases that afflict us all... 

• Metabolic diseases - seeking ways to reverse and prevent Type 2 diabetes 

• Cancers - advancing studies on the prevention of breast cancer recurrence and ground-breaking research 

developing compounds that attack cancer 

• Healthy aging - uncovering how caloric restriction, exercise and other interventions improve and extend lives 

• Neurological diseases - identifying the basis for the diagnosis and prevention of dementia and Alzheimer’s 

• Cardiovascular diseases - investigating preventive solutions to hypertension, heart attack and stroke 

• Obesity - exploring genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors contributing to adult and childhood obesity

Our Founders 

C. B. “dOC” and Irene W. Pennington 

In 1980, C. B. “Doc” and Irene Pennington donated $125 million 

to Louisiana State University to build the Pennington Biomedical 

Research Center. To establish what they wished to be a worldclass 

nutrition research institution, they made what was then the 

largest single donation by an individual to a state institution of 

higher education. With this generous donation, the Pennington 

Medical Foundation was established and provided the funds to 

build the Center. 

The Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation was 

established in 1988 to foster support for the additional needs 

of the Center from the philanthropic community and the 

State of Louisiana. Many generous individuals, corporations 

and foundations have played a significant role in making 

the Pennington Biomedical Research Center the largest 

academically-based nutritional research center in the world.

Common Cause: Believing in the Possibilities 

Turner Family members extend legacy 

At its core, the Pennington Biomedical Research Center represents the intersection between intellect and 

elbow grease, two factors that made the institution appealing to Turner Industries founder Bert Turner. The 

Baton Rouge entrepreneur, businessman and philanthropist fostered Pennington’s growth by serving on the 

board of directors of the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation, advocating on the Center’s behalf 

and providing financial support from him and from Turner Industries, from 1993 until his death in 2008. 

Turner believed strongly in Pennington’s mission, and its ability to impact Louisiana and the world at large. 

Throughout his involvement, his passion also spread to members of his family. 

Turner’s widow, Sue, daughter Mary “Moo” Svendson and husband, Martin, and son, John Turner and 

partner, Jerry Fischer, have each continued Bert’s legacy while deepening their own interest in and 

commitment to the organization. 

“I wanted to support what Bert was interested in,” says Sue Turner. “Anytime an organization sets excellence 

as its goal, as Pennington does, the product is good.” 

“To be able to participate in something that Bert believed in so 

strongly is such an honor. And to watch something bear fruit that 

has such incredible potential is a tremendous thing to be a part of. 

Pennington’s best days are ahead.” 

A Plaquemine native, Sue grew up with a keen interest in learning which she also instilled into her own 

family. She and Bert served as founding members of the Pennington Council of 100 when it was established 

in 2007, and they often discussed the institution’s potential and its ability to attract talent, recalls Sue. 

Council members meet quarterly for an in-depth visit with a Pennington scientist and, with their increased 

knowledge of the Center’s work, often serve as advocates for Pennington and its research. She supported 

Pennington side-by-side with Bert, but also found Pennington’s research personally compelling. 

“As a gardener, I was very interested in some of the work they are doing that connects plant and human 

life,” Sue says. She has supported several research projects related to the study of botanicals, including the 

2006 symposium “Botanicals and Cardiometabolic Risk,” which examined the use of plants in fighting heart 

disease. She helped fund a grant to support Dr. William Cefalu’s research at the John S. McIlhenny Botanical 

Research Laboratory, and has sponsored Pennington’s “Food as Medicine” conference which explored how 

botanicals contribute to disease prevention. 

In 2008, Sue also joined the campaign to establish the Institute for Dementia Research and Prevention 

(IDRP) at Pennington, the initiative started when Dr. Jeffrey Keller joined Pennington in 2008. Learning that

the IDRP would directly impact Louisianans with world-class research programs focused on dementia 

prevention and educational opportunities for individuals impacted by diseases of dementia. Sue also 

understood that private philanthropy was critical to successfully launching the program. 

The IDRP also appealed to John Turner and Jerry Fischer, philanthropists and Pennington donors since 

1995. John says his father’s association with the organization made it a meaningful cause to support. 

Furthermore, John and Jerry share an interest in good nutrition and health and believe Pennington’s 

mission can make a substantial difference in the health of Americans. Years earlier, Jerry had even 

participated in a Pennington research study on the effect of fish oil, and he appreciated first-hand the time 

and research required to reveal connections between nutrition and disease prevention. 

By 2007, John and Jerry had substantially raised their level of support to Pennington. In 2008, when 

approached to help fund the IDRP, they took part in a visit to meet Dr. Keller and learn about his vision 

and his body of work. They responded with one of the campaign’s most generous gifts, joining Sue as 

members of the Pennington Council of 100. 

“This research could make a major impact on the lives of people who have dementia and Alzheimer’s,” said 

John. “We’re all going to be there one day. It will be an incredible asset.” 

For Martin and Moo Svendson, the opportunity to become involved in Pennington has provided them 

the chance to honor Bert’s legacy. The Svendsons began their support of PBRC through participation in 

the yearly fundraiser, Soaring to New Heights, and became annual fund donors in 2005. As continuing 

supporters of the Annual Fund for Excellence and members of the Pennington Council of 100, Martin and 

Moo are helping to fulfill one of the most critical needs of the Center—providing unrestricted funds so 

vital in sustaining the Center’s researchers and in recruiting the next generation of scientists. In 2008, they 

joined the Pennington Council of 100 with a gift made in memory of Bert.

In 2007, the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation established the Pennington Council of 100 for 

individuals, foundations, and businesses who have made gifts of $100,000 or more and remain actively involved 

with the Pennington Biomedical Research Center and Foundation, or who have made a gift of $10,000 or more

A Passion for Answers

As Pennington Biomedical Research Center Executive Director, Dr. Claude Bouchard, laid the 

groundwork for a possible new dementia prevention program, he met with Baton Rouge businessman and 

community leader Charlie Lamar. The longtime philanthropist had supported the advancement of services 

for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in the capital area -- charitable work that was inspired by his 

mother’s struggle with dementia late in life. Bouchard’s idea sounded compelling, and Charlie wanted to 

know more. 

“We talked about potential links between dementia and nutrition, and in the end, it looked like an 

incredible opportunity for Pennington,” recalls Charlie. 

They met several times to discuss details, and Charlie pored over the model. Bouchard also introduced 

Charlie and his wife, Carole, to Dr. Jeffrey Keller, a leading dementia research scientist who Pennington 

planned to recruit. Keller shared a vision for conducting an extensive longitudinal study focused on 

finding links between dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, and diet. No such research had ever been 

conducted, and such a sweeping study, which aimed to follow a few hundred people over many years, 

represented a rare opportunity for both the state and the scientific community worldwide. 

“The IDRP is a landmark opportunity. What the Institute uncovers 

could really be tremendous for the field of dementia research.” 

“Dr. Keller laid out his plan,” recalls Charlie. “We learned that if you have a base of raw data, there are 

a number of things you can accomplish with it, including creating better diagnostic tools to determine 

normal brain function, and developing strategies to help doctors help patients. Having this study would 

also substantially help to attract federal and pharmaceutical funding.” 

The personal interest and support from Charlie and Carole helped bring Keller to Pennington in January 

2008, and it set the wheels in motion to fully form the Institute for Dementia Prevention and Research 

(IDRP). Charlie agreed to chair the IDRP development committee, and shared his passion for the 

cause with potential donors. This included an enjoyable visit with Don and Pat Lyle, who immediately 

embraced the IDRP and the campaign and made a generous leadership gift. Despite a national recession 

and down stock market, the committee surpassed its fundraising goal. Charlie and Carole were joined by 

sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lee and Bill Dixon, in making a gift to the IDRP through the Charles and 

Josephine Lamar Memorial Fund. 

Keller says that without the support and enthusiasm of local philanthropists like the Lamars, research 

would never get off the ground.

“The Lamars’ support of the IDRP has made all the difference,” says Keller. “Without private gifts which 

demonstrate strength and local buy-in, we would never be able to apply for federal funds or attract the 

interest of pharmaceutical companies. These entitles simply would not fund a project on the front end.” 

The IDRP’s initial phase of work includes a longitudinal study on the brain function of more than 600 

subjects from Louisiana, including Charlie himself. In fact, interest in the study surpassed expectations 

from Keller and his team. 

“We thought we’d have maybe 200 people,” Keller says. “We were blown away by the numbers.” 

No such study has ever been conducted in the state, and it provides a unique opportunity to advance what 

is known about the indigenous effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It is one of the 12 largest 

studies on dementia in the country. 

Throughout each phase of the IDRP’s establishment, Charlie and Carole have closely charted its progress. 

“It’s quite an opportunity for our community,” says Carole, who, like Charlie, also experienced caring for an 

aging mother suffering from dementia. 

The IDRP will begin planning for its second phase soon, the creation of a brain bank, says Keller. The brain 

bank will allow researchers access to vast tissue samples and thus provide more answers on the illusive 

disease. 

“The IDRP is a landmark opportunity,” says Charlie. “What the Institute uncovers could really be 

tremendous for the field of dementia research.”

Ways to Help 

Gifts made to Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation 

provide vital funding for nutrition-based research that aims 

to prevent premature death from chronic diseases such as 

heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity. Philanthropic 

support also helps to fund dementia research related to 

nutrition, physical activity and genetics and to translate 

Pennington’s discoveries for the benefits of individuals, 

families, and communities at large. 

Annual fund for excellence 

Pennington Biomedical Research Center was founded 

as a result of an extraordinary philanthropic gift from 

C. B. “Doc” and Irene W. Pennington. Broad-based 

philanthropic support from the community is critical 

to provide unrestricted funding for the Center’s growth 

and research initiatives. Gifts to the Annual Fund for 

Excellence provide seed funding for emerging research 

and helps to recruit and sustain the Center’s renowned 

scientists. 

For every $1 of unrestricted support, PBRC can acquire 

more than $3 in additional research grants. Therefore, 

every gift is important. 

tribute giving 

A gift can be made in memory of a friend or family 

member, in honor of someone special, or in recognition 

of a special occasion. The amount of your gift remains 

confidential. An acknowledgement is sent to the person or 

persons you designate. 

Soaring to New Heights 

Soaring to New Heights is a fundraising event to support 

the work of PBRC. The event, held in conjunction with the 

hot air balloon championship competition, features great 

cuisine, hot air balloon glows, fireworks and music. Funds 

are raised through event sponsorships and ticket sales.

PBRF provides giving opportunities that afford donors the 

ability to have their name, or the name of someone they 

would like to honor, associated with a specific laboratory, 

equipment, room, or building they choose to fund. Please

Endowed SuPPort 

Endowed Chairs and Professorships provide critical 

annual support in perpetuity, which allows the Pennington 

Biomedical Research Center to recruit and maintain a 

cadre of the world’s finest research scientists. Philanthropic 

gifts are leveraged through an attractive matching program 

with the Louisiana Board of Regents’ Eminent Scholars 

Program.

Bequests, charitable remainder trusts, and estate gifts are
