from chronic diseases.

Message from the Foundation Board Chairman 

Dear Friends, 

The Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation, through the generosity of its donors, has made great 

strides despite the challenging economic times. For the first time, gifts to the Annual Fund for Excellence 

have exceeded $500,000. Such a response was due in part to a dedicated group of fundraising volunteers 

and the strong leadership of Kris Kirkpatrick, who is featured in this report. The Annual Fund for 

Excellence is increasingly vital as the Center is facing state budget cuts and increased competition for NIH 

funding. 

Annual Fund and other philanthropic gifts help to recruit and retain top scientists, the heart and lifeblood of 

the institution. Pennington’s faculty members are driving the science of medical discovery. The commitment 

of many faculty is evidenced by their own philanthropic gifts. In this report, we feature one dedicated 

scientist who, with her husband, has made a planned gift to support the work of future scientists. I also hope 

you enjoy reading about the strong corporate and foundation partnerships that have been formed with the 

Center. 

The Foundation continues to make a difference in the advancement of the Center through the many 

endowed chairs and professorships, unrestricted grants and funding, along with helping to recruit the 

brightest minds to the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Despite the current challenges, I remain 

optimistic for the future of Pennington. Thank you for your continued generosity and commitment to 

making improved health a reality.

Message from the PBRC Executive Director 

As of June 1, 2010, I assumed the role of Executive Director at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, 

following ten years of unprecedented growth under the leadership of Dr. Claude Bouchard. I feel privileged 

to lead the finest center devoted to nutrition, health and preventive medicine in the world. Baton Rouge has 

also provided an exceptionally warm welcome, and I can see why the Center is a magnet for scientists and 

their families who come here from all over the world. 

Over the past year major accomplishments at the Center include completion of a new clinical research 

facility, final planning for an imaging center, leading statewide efforts to improve children’s fitness and 

health, as well as exponential growth in the Institute for Dementia Research and Prevention. These advances 

would not be possible without the men and women who serve on the board and who are engaged in the 

task of creating endowed chairs and professorships, raising funds for specific projects, as well as garnering 

support for unrestricted funds. Tim Barfield as the Chairman of the Board, and Jennifer Winstead, President 

and CEO of the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation, led the way towards these efforts. We are 

grateful for their devotion to these activities on the Center’s behalf. 

Our own PBRC faculty continues to be recognized for their scientific accomplishments. Most recently, 

Dr. Donna Ryan was elected and is now serving as President of The Obesity Society, a leading professional 

and scientific organization dedicated to the study of obesity. Dr. Eric Ravussin recently received the 2010 

Willendorf Award from the International Association for the Study of Obesity. This prestigious award for 

clinical research in obesity was previously received by other PBRC faculty members, namely Drs. George 

Bray, Claude Bouchard, and Lars Sjostrom. 

The Center, as you can see, has experienced significant physical and reputation growth over the past decade. 

These accomplishments are due in part to your devotion to our mission of promoting healthier lives through 

research and education in nutrition and preventive medicine. We are now constructing the next five-year 

strategic plan for the Center, Vision 2015, which will guide us over the next stage of growth. With this 

updated plan and our new facilities, the Center is poised to make significant contributions to the welfare of 

our fellow citizens and the economic development of Louisiana.

Advancing New Discoveries through Science and Philanthropy 

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center 

is at the forefront of medical research, working 

passionately and deliberately on treating and 

preventing obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular 

disease, cancer, and dementia. Working in 

over 50 laboratories, the Center’s scientists are 

searching for answers to help us live healthier by 

sharing their findings with physicians, healthcare 

practitioners, private industry, researchers, and the 

public. 

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is 

uniquely positioned to conduct medical research 

and move it rapidly to a point that benefits society. It is called translational research. In order to save lives, enhance 

quality of life and preserve health, the Center pursues knowledge in three broad arenas: basic science, clinical science, 

and population science. 

This range of research activities allows the Center to foster basic science discoveries, promote clinical applications and 

encourage the translation of the findings to the population at large. 

Pennington scientists are seeking answers to the many diseases that can afflict us all... 

• Metabolic diseases - seeking ways to reverse and prevent type 2 diabetes 

• Cancers - advancing studies on the prevention of breast cancer recurrence and groundbreaking research developing 

compounds that attack cancer 

• Healthy aging - uncovering how caloric restriction, physical activity and other interventions improve and extend lives 

• Neurological diseases - identifying the basis for the diagnosis and prevention of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease 

• Cardiovascular diseases - investigating preventive solutions to hypertension, heart attack and stroke 

• Obesity - exploring genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors contributing to adult and childhood obesity


Tribute to Our Founders 

OUR FOUNDERS 

C. B. “DOC” AND IRENE W. PENNINGTON 

In 1980, C. B. “Doc” and Irene Pennington donated $125 million to Louisiana State University to build the Pennington 

Biomedical Research Center. To establish what they wished to be a world-class nutrition research institution, they 

made what was then the largest single donation by an individual to a public institution of higher education. With this 

generous donation, the Pennington Medical Foundation was established and provided the funds to build the Center. 

The Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation was established in 1988 to foster support for the additional needs 

of the Center from the philanthropic community and the State of Louisiana. Many generous individuals, corporations 

and foundations have played a significant role in making the Pennington Biomedical Research Center the largest 

academically-based nutritional research center in the world.

The Multiplier Effect 

Kris and Jane Kirkpatrick have long believed in the vision of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Kris, a partner 

with Long Law Firm, worked with the late U.S. Senator Russell Long and then Senator J. Bennett Johnston to secure 

an appropriation to help open the Center. Since then, Kris and Jane have watched the institution become the largest 

academically-based nutritional research center in the world and a powerful catalyst for economic development in 

Louisiana. 

Today, the Kirkpatricks support the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation as philanthropists and as volunteers for 

the Annual Fund for Excellence. Kris is a member of the Foundation’s board of directors. Armed with enthusiasm, the Baton 

Rouge community volunteers say they look forward to opportunities to champion the Center and its accomplishments. 

“When we talk about Pennington, it’s easy to demonstrate significance,” says Kris. “It stands out for its impressive return 

on investment. For every dollar given, the Center is able to draw an additional three dollars. A match like that is really rare, 

and it means a lot to donors, especially now.” 

Pennington enjoys a strong reputation in the international scientific community, and because of the work of volunteers like 

Kris and Jane, local and regional appreciation about what transpires in the world renown research Center is also robust. 

“More and more people understand the incredible work taking place at Pennington,” says Kris. He notes as more people 

learn about how Pennington’s research improves health, the more they appreciate the work at the Center. “Now, they know 

what’s behind it.” 

Jane says it’s because the Center’s work resonates with communities in a personal, meaningful way. 

“You look at what they do -- research in obesity, diabetes and dementia. These are areas that affect so many of us,” she says. 

“My father had dementia. Diabetes runs in Kris’ family. What’s going on behind those walls is ultimately about bettering 

lives and finding a cure. ” 

The Kirkpatricks say their passion for the Center is fueled by the energy of the scientists themselves. They attend lectures 

and tours and they enjoy connecting with researchers to better understand the facility’s vast projects. “Meeting the 

scientists and hearing them talk about their work, you can’t help but be impressed,” says Kris. 

While the Center’s past progress is palpable, Kris and Jane recognize that scientific research requires time and financial 

support to remain on the leading edge. 

“We have a unique opportunity here,” Kris says. “It’s already an internationally recognized gem, but only if we take the 

position that we need to support it thoroughly can we see it reach its full, exciting potential.”

Changing Lives by Leaving a Legacy 

“It’s like solving a puzzle,” says Jennifer Rood, Ph.D. “There’s a problem, and we’re trying to find the answer. The work that 

takes place here makes a real difference in people’s lives.” 

As director of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center’s Clinical Research Laboratory, Jennifer tracks the progress of a 

constant stream of projects, all aimed at improving some of the nation’s greatest health challenges. 

She believes in her work so strongly that last fall, Jennifer and her husband, Mike, made a planned gift to the Pennington 

Biomedical Research Foundation. Their future contribution will be dedicated to supporting the work of emerging scientists. 

“We both were excited about making a difference by doing this,” says Mike, Communications Director of the Louisiana Press 

Association. “It makes us feel great to support organizations we believe in.” 

A native of the Mississippi Delta, Jennifer considered a career in medicine after watching her father suffer from chronic 

arthritis, and later, kidney and heart disease. The field of research, however, held a different promise. 

“I thought, if I go into medicine, I could help one person at a time,” she recalls. “But if I go into research, I could change a lot 

of lives.” 

After completing a degree in microbiology at LSU, where she and Mike met, Jennifer completed a doctorate in pathology at 

LSU’s Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. The couple married in 1992 and returned to Baton Rouge the following year, 

when she accepted a position at Pennington as an instructor and assistant director of the Clinical Research Laboratory. 

Jennifer advanced rapidly and has contributed significant findings to obesity research. In 2002, she was appointed lab 

director, and became the director of the Mass Spectrometry Lab in 2006. Her findings have garnered significant praise and 

contributed to nearly 70 studies and articles. 

After nearly two decades at Pennington, Jennifer’s appreciation for the Center’s accomplishments and the hope of research is 

undiminished. 

“I know the good that we do, and I see how important it is, especially for a young scientist, to have support,” Jennifer says. 

Mike agrees, adding, “We want to leave that behind.”

Members of The Legacy Society are those individuals who have made a planned gift to the Pennington Biomedical Research 

Foundation or have notified the Foundation of their intention to do so. Members of The Legacy Society help to fulfill the Center’s 

mission for generations to come.

In 2007, the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation established the Pennington Council of 100 for individuals, 

foundations, and businesses who have made gifts of $100,000 or more and remain actively involved with the Pennington 

Biomedical Research Center and Foundation, or who are giving $10,000 or more to the Annual Fund for Excellence. 

Members attend quarterly meetings with the Center’s executive director and a featured research scientist. Many Council

Mission Driven for Healthy Living 

“We know that the studies conducted at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center are going to make a tremendous 

difference in people’s lives,” says Amedisys founder and CEO William F. “Bill” Borne. “When you see the effect of illness on 

the population – as we do every day - it’s so important to support scientists looking for cures. We’re thrilled to be part of 

it.” 

Baton Rouge-based national home health care provider Amedisys believes in giving back. Each year, the company’s 

corporate foundation supports national and community-based charities that impact the 42 states in which the company 

operates. The Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation in Baton Rouge is among them. 

Amedisys has supported the Foundation’s fundraising event, Soaring to New Heights, since 2004 and has been the title 

sponsor since 2007. Amedisys has also helped sponsor the annual education conference for Pennington’s new Institute for 

Dementia Research and Prevention (IDRP), whose ground-breaking programs focus on the study of the pervasive problem 

of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. 

Several of the company’s key employees have shared their passion for Pennington through countless volunteer hours. 

Amedisys Chief Development Officer, Tim Barfield, serves as the Foundation’s current board chair, an appointment that 

follows other key volunteer roles. Barfield chaired the Foundation’s inaugural Annual Fund for Excellence campaign. 

Amedisys Vice President of Tax, Mike Pitts, serves as the company’s volunteer liaison with Pennington, currently chairing 

the corporate division of the Annual Fund for Excellence campaign. Through their corporate and personal involvement, 

they inspire others to join in support of Pennington. 

“It’s gratifying to support an organization that is focused on finding cures and improving health,” says Pitts. “We know the 

devastating effects of disease on patients and their families, and it has been very meaningful for our employees to support 

an organization like Pennington.” 

Barfield adds that Pennington is a unique asset whose continued growth will benefit the entire region. “We believe in being 

a good corporate citizen,” says Barfield. “We’ve experienced a lot of growth here in this community, and we understand 

that our success and Baton Rouge’s success are linked. We see Pennington as a huge plus for the state and a game changer 

worldwide in disease prevention.”

Ways to Help 


Gifts made to Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation provide vital funding for 

nutrition-based research that aims to prevent premature death from chronic diseases 

such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and dementia. 

ANNUAL FUND FOR EXCELLENCE 

Pennington Biomedical Research Center was founded as a result of an extraordinary 

philanthropic gift from C. B. “Doc” and Irene W. Pennington. Broad-based 

philanthropic support from the community is critical to provide unrestricted funding 

for the Center’s growth and research initiatives. Gifts to the Annual Fund for Excellence 

provide seed funding for emerging research and help to recruit and sustain the Center’s 

renowned scientists.

A gift can be made in memory of a friend or family member, in honor of someone

confidential. An acknowledgement is sent to the person or persons you designate. 

SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS 

Soaring to New Heights is a fundraising event to support the work of PBRC. The event, 

held in conjunction with the Pennington Hot Air Balloon Championship, features great 

cuisine, hot air balloon glows, fireworks and music. Funds are raised through event 

sponsorships and ticket sales. 

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES 

PBRF provides giving opportunities that offer donors the ability to have their name, or 

the name of someone they would like to honor, associated with a specific laboratory,

ENDOWED SUPPORT 

Endowed Chairs and Professorships provide critical annual support in perpetuity, 

which allows the Pennington Biomedical Research Center to recruit and maintain a 

cadre of the world’s finest research scientists. Philanthropic gifts are leveraged through 

an attractive matching program with the Louisiana Board of Regents’ Eminent Scholars 

Program.
