2 PBRF 2010 Annual Report Mission The Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation provides the Pennington Biomedical Research Center with vital funding for nutrition-based research that aims to prevent premature death from chronic diseases. PBRF 2010 Annual Report 3 Tim Barfield Message from the Foundation Board Chairman Dear Friends, The Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation, through the generosity of its donors, has made great strides despite the challenging economic times. For the first time, gifts to the Annual Fund for Excellence have exceeded $500,000. Such a response was due in part to a dedicated group of fundraising volunteers and the strong leadership of Kris Kirkpatrick, who is featured in this report. The Annual Fund for Excellence is increasingly vital as the Center is facing state budget cuts and increased competition for NIH funding. Annual Fund and other philanthropic gifts help to recruit and retain top scientists, the heart and lifeblood of the institution. Pennington’s faculty members are driving the science of medical discovery. The commitment of many faculty is evidenced by their own philanthropic gifts. In this report, we feature one dedicated scientist who, with her husband, has made a planned gift to support the work of future scientists. I also hope you enjoy reading about the strong corporate and foundation partnerships that have been formed with the Center. The Foundation continues to make a difference in the advancement of the Center through the many endowed chairs and professorships, unrestricted grants and funding, along with helping to recruit the brightest minds to the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Despite the current challenges, I remain optimistic for the future of Pennington. Thank you for your continued generosity and commitment to making improved health a reality.
