Tribute to Our Founders
OUR FOUNDERS
C. B. “DOC” AND IRENE W. PENNINGTON
In 1980, C. B. “Doc” and Irene Pennington donated $125 million to Louisiana State University to build the Pennington
Biomedical Research Center. To establish what they wished to be a world-class nutrition research institution, they
made what was then the largest single donation by an individual to a public institution of higher education. With this
generous donation, the Pennington Medical Foundation was established and provided the funds to build the Center.
The Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation was established in 1988 to foster support for the additional needs
of the Center from the philanthropic community and the State of Louisiana. Many generous individuals, corporations
and foundations have played a significant role in making the Pennington Biomedical Research Center the largest
academically-based nutritional research center in the world.
CONTINUING THE PENNINGTON LEGACY AND COMMITMENT
We are most grateful to the Irene W. and C. B. Pennington Foundation for its steadfast contributions and leadership
in supporting the vital work of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center and Foundation. In doing so, the
Pennington family honors and continues the extraordinary legacy of our founders.
