The Pennington Biomedical Research Center<br />

is at the forefront of medical research, working<br />

passionately <strong>and</strong> deliberately on treating <strong>and</strong><br />

preventing obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular<br />

disease, cancer, <strong>and</strong> dementia. Working in<br />

over 50 laboratories, the Center’s scientists are<br />

searching for answers to help us live healthier by<br />

sharing their findings with physicians, healthcare<br />

practitioners, private industry, researchers, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

public.<br />

The Pennington Biomedical Research Center is<br />

uniquely positioned to conduct medical research<br />

<strong>and</strong> move it rapidly to a point that benefits society. It is called translational research. In order to save lives, enhance<br />

quality of life <strong>and</strong> preserve health, the Center pursues knowledge in three broad arenas: basic science, clinical science,<br />

<strong>and</strong> population science.<br />

This range of research activities allows the Center to foster basic science discoveries, promote clinical applications <strong>and</strong><br />

encourage the translation of the findings to the population at large.<br />

Pennington scientists are seeking answers to the many diseases that can afflict us all...<br />

• Metabolic diseases - seeking ways to reverse <strong>and</strong> prevent type 2 diabetes<br />

• Cancers - advancing studies on the prevention of breast cancer recurrence <strong>and</strong> groundbreaking research developing<br />

compounds that attack cancer<br />

• Healthy aging - uncovering how caloric restriction, physical activity <strong>and</strong> other interventions improve <strong>and</strong> extend lives<br />

• Neurological diseases - identifying the basis for the diagnosis <strong>and</strong> prevention of dementia <strong>and</strong> Alzheimer’s disease<br />

• Cardiovascular diseases - investigating preventive solutions to hypertension, heart attack <strong>and</strong> stroke<br />

• Obesity - exploring genetic, environmental <strong>and</strong> lifestyle factors contributing to adult <strong>and</strong> childhood obesity
