PSYCHOLOGY
SEXABILITY
There is precious little material on the
subject, perhaps because as a society
we'd like to imagine that the disabled don't
have the same sexual needs as the rest of
us. Yet the first question a newly paralyzed
man will ask his doctor is inevitably, 'Will I
still be able to have sex?' Everyone has
wondered at some point how a person
with quadriplegia has sex. Or what leads
an able-bodied person to marry a
disfigured partner. Our society tends to
dismiss the disabled as asexual, but
nothing could be further from the truth.
The human sex drive is a formidable force
and a big part of our spirit. The disabled
love—and lust—just like the rest of us.
According to Dr. Shaniff Esmail, who
specializes in disabled sexuality, "a
positive sex life can actually aid healing.
Audiences will be inspired by a myriad of
characters overcoming their disabilities to
enjoy their partners and explore the very
limits of their sexuality. "Where there's a
will, there's a way…" In order to overcome
their body's limitations, some disabled
men and women have to go to
extraordinary lengths. SexAbility's
subjects teach the rest of us not to take
our abilities for granted.
RACE/RACISM
NUCLEAR SAVAGE: THE
ISLANDS OF SECRET
PROJECT 4.1
By Adam Horowitz
"John is a savage, but a happy, amenable
savage." - 1950's newsreel footage of
Marshall Islanders
Featuring recently declassified U.S.
government documents, survivor
testimony, and unseen archival footage,
Nuclear Savage uncovers one of the most
troubling chapters in modern American
history: how Marshall islanders,
considered an uncivilized culture, were
deliberately used as human guinea pigs to
study the effects of nuclear fallout on
human beings.
Between 1946 and 1958 the United States
tested 67 nuclear weapons above ground
on or near Bikini and Enewetok atolls. One
hydrogen bomb was 1000 times larger
than the Hiroshima bomb. Entire islands
were vaporized and populated islands
were blanketed with fallout. As the film
shows, the heavily exposed people of
Rongelap were then enrolled as human
subjects in the top-secret Project 4.1 and
evacuated to a severely contaminated
island to study the effects of eating
radioactive food for nearly 30 years. Many
of the Marshall Islanders developed
cancers and had babies that were stillborn
or with serious birth defects.
Nuclear Savage follows the islanders
today as they continue to fight for justice
and acknowledgement of what was done
to them. Despite recent disclosures, the
U.S. government continues to deny that
the islanders were deliberately used as
human guinea pigs. The film raises
disturbing questions about racism, the U.S.
government's moral obligation to the
people of the Marshall Islands, and why
the government is continuing to cover up
the intent of the tests and Project 4.1 after
several decades.
Reviews
"A poignant, provocative, and deeply
troubling look at the lingering and
lasting effects of nuclear disaster and
the human consequences of US
government efforts to define, contain,
and control public awareness and
concern." - Counterpunch
"One of the most disturbing
documentaries I have ever seen.
Opens up one of the hidden horrors of
American history. The film does a
stunning job juxtaposing examples of
our smug ignorance of South Sea
culture with the reality of what we did
to it." - Robert Koehler, Chicago
Tribune

"The term 'savage' is used to refer to
people from primitive cultures, but this
documentary shows how savagery
reaches new levels with the advent of
advanced technology. …Without
incredible archival footage and
shocking secret documents, the story
would seem unbelievable." - Film
Society, Lincoln Center
CROSS-SECTIONAL
SECTIONAL
ANATOMY WITH
MULTIDETECTOR CT:
THORAX ABDOMEN AND
PELVIS
By Dr Muaaze Ahmad
An exciting new resource for anyone using
cross sectional anatomy or involved in the
interpretation of radiological scans.
Thousands of clear and accurate images,
in an intuitive digital format, provide the
user with an invaluable aid to cross
section anatomy, CT and MRI
interpretation and a stunning 3D anatomy
image library.
View hundreds of clear and accurate 3D
anatomy images of the thorax, abdomen
and pelvis. Interactive functions allow you
to add and remove layers, rotate and label
any structure with the click of a mouse.
In the cross sectional anatomy section,
use advanced functionality to select a
region, modality, plane and contrast - (for
CT) then scroll through labeled cross
sections and compare with CT scans of
the whole trunk, thorax, abdomen and
pelvis plus MRI of the male and female
pelvis.
Label any structure on either the cross
section or the scans and follow through all
the available slices using the scrolling
function. Structures labels are clearly
mapped in 2D, rather than just pointed to
give the structure circumference. You can
also view the structure labels as a color
overlay over the scans.
