Japan renewed a fierce public debate over
the safety and viability of nuclear power.
The Atomic States of America journeys to
nuclear reactor communities around the
country to provide a comprehensive
exploration of the history and impact to
date of nuclear power, and to investigate
the truths and myths about nuclear energy.
From the gates of Three Mile Island, to the
cooling ponds of Braidwood, IL, the film
introduces people who have been on the
front lines of this issue for decades:
community advocates, investigative
journalists, renowned physicists, nuclear
engineers, Nuclear Regulatory
Commission inspectors, and former
government leaders.
Based in part on Kelly McMaster's book
"Welcome to Shirley", about growing up in
the shadow of the Brookhaven National
Lab on Long Island, the film explores the
evidence for serious health consequences
documented by people living in Shirley, as
well as near other nuclear facilities. Their
concerns call into question who can be
trusted to provide truthful information, and
how much influence the nuclear industry
has over the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission and its decisions.
As the nation stands at the crossroads of a
possible Nuclear Renaissance, The
Atomic States of America inspires
informed discussion on the safety, viability
and future of nuclear power in the United
States.
Reviews
"In the wake of the Fukushima
disaster in Japan, The Atomic States
of America casts a timely inquiry into
the viability of nuclear energy." -
Outside Magazine

"A stimulating, well-made piece. A
sobering documentary about the
dangers of nuclear reactors and a
downsized Nuclear Regulatory
Commission." - Hollywood Reporter
"Reasoned and worth engaging…The
film builds a convincing statistical
case about cancer and nukes." -
CAPE SPIN! AN AMERICAN
AN
POWER STRUGGLE
Cape Spin! An American Power Struggle is
a tragicomic tale of the 10-year battle over
America's largest proposed clean energy
project – and a microcosm of the
obstacles the country faces in the larger
struggle to move towards more
sustainable forms of energy on a broader
scale, or build any large-scale project.
When energy entrepreneur Jim Gordon
first proposed Cape Wind, a project to put
130 wind turbines in fabled Nantucket
Sound, he had no idea that a huge
firestorm of opposition would erupt. Cape
Spin! tells the incredible tale of how
America's first proposed offshore wind
farm triggered an unexpected schism in
this idyllic coastal region. Neighbor was
pitted against neighbor, environmentalist
against environmentalist, and unexpected
alliances were forged – including
Kennedys and Kochs on the same side.
Cape Wind supporters claimed that the
project would launch a new American
clean energy industry, while opponents
countered it would ruin a natural treasure
and enrich a private developer.
Shot over five years, the filmmakers
enjoyed
unprecedented
behind-the-scenes access to the key
players on both sides of the controversy.
As a result, the film shows it all -- the
hearings, the protests, the science, the
complexity of the debate, the passion, and
often the absurdities that went into each
sides arguments.
After 10 years, $70 million and 8,000
pages of analysis the Federal Government
approved the wind farm, but the project is
still not up and running, as the controversy
and debate continues.
Reviews
"Cape Spin! Aims to separate facts
from distortion and let viewers decide
about Cape Wind for themselves.
(The film) alternates between the
sober, lighthearted and even wacky
as it breaks down its complex subject
and follows debate and protest
around the Cape." - Associated Press

"The film is exasperatingly funny, as it
features politicians who often exhort
the public to embrace 'green' energy
projects such as wind farms — but
who also happen to own homes with
ocean views of Nantucket Sound —
arguing against the project." - Boston
Globe
"Turns a tragicomedic lens on
screaming dissent at public hearings,
protests by costumed demonstrators,
caustic advertising campaigns against
the project and dueling op-ed articles
during Mr. Gordon's pursuit of
regulatory approval from various
layers of government." - New York
IN ORGANIC WE TRUST
By Kip Pastor
Most Americans now purchase organic
food in some form, but don't know what
"organic" really means. In Organic We
Trust follows filmmaker Kip Pastor on a
journey to answer the essential questions
about organic: What exactly is certified
organic? Is it really better for us, or just
marketing hype? Is organic the key to
transforming our food system?
The first half of the film digs deep to
investigate what "certified organic" means
and the truth behind the labeling and
marketing. The film presents a broad
spectrum of views, including interviews
with organic farmers, scientists, critics,
and health, food and agriculture experts,
mixed with creative graphics. Along the
way, Pastor learns that what began as a
grassroots movement of small-scale
organic farmers has turned into a $30
billion industry dominated by large
corporate operations, most with little real
interest in reforming our unhealthful food
system. But in spite of the corporatization
of organic, the grassroots philosophy that
drove the original movement is making a
comeback in many innovative and hopeful
forms.
The second part of the film highlights the
variety of ways this philosophy is now
changing how we grow and eat our food
on a broad scale, well beyond just growing
organic. Pastor travels across the country
to unearth the stories of those at the
forefront of a renewed sustainable food
movement: family farmers dedicated to
stewardship of the land, a thriving
"locavore" subculture centered on farmer's
markets, chefs feeding children healthy
school meals, and urban gardens
sprouting up to bring fresh food to
low-income communities.
The film is divided into two parts:
Part 1: "Investigating Organic &
Conventional Agriculture" (40 Minutes)
Part 2: "Beyond Organic: Other Solutions"
(40 Minutes)
Reviews
"A jaunty first-person tour of this
burgeoning sector of the food
business. The movie explains what
'organic' is and isn't." - Washington
Post
"A relevant and revelatory
documentary that forays into both the
make-up and marketing of the foods
we eat." - Orange County Register
