Could Bob’s Discount Furniture Warehouse
Have Gotten Better Equipment Than That
Supplied By Maybury?
There are few people in the Northeast who
are not familiar with the Bob’s Discount
Furniture TV commercials, featuring
furniture with an irresistible combination of
quality and low price. On
the other hand, there
are probably even
fewer people who
are familiar with
the process
involved in
getting this
furniture from
the factory to the
customer. A
description of
Maybury Material
Handling’s involvement in the recent
addition to a Bob’s Discount Furniture
facility provides a good deal of insight into
the warehouse and distribution operations.
In Norwich, Connecticut, Bob’s Discount
Furniture maintains a large storage and
distribution center for furniture and bedding,
from which
approximately 1 million
pieces were shipped in
2005. They receive
solid containers filled
with multiple units of
the same product,
then store the
contents in this
warehouse. To
ensure the
continued growth
of the company
and provide job
security for their
1,500 employees, Bob’s
Discount Furniture had
been wanting to expand
their storage capacity and
increase the volume of product handled.
To that end, they have just completed a
new 272,000-square-foot warehouse
addition. One of the goals of the addition
was to move all inventory under one roof.
I DOUBT IT!
This would reduce furniture handling
(reducing, in turn, damage to the furniture);
decrease manpower required; and allow for
higher profits. Additionally, Bob’s Discount
Borroughs and Maybury
have the strong, durable
storage system you need.
Maybury is Now Your Stocking Distributor for
Borroughs “Storage Systems That Work”
Borroughs Corporation has over 60 years of
experience in the manufacture of storage system
products. In that time, Borroughs products have
become well-known for three characteristics:
strength • durability • flexibility
For example, Borroughs’s Box Edge Plus ® Shelving is
constructed with a closed, welded box shape with
lapped and welded corners for rigidity, strength and
the ability to withstand impact and point loads. Ideal
for storing large, heavy or bulky parts, this shelving is
available in open, closed, bin, ledge, cabinet and
counter styles.
“Storage Systems That Work” was the headline of a
recent Borroughs ad that promoted their stocking
distributors as “space utilization experts.” Maybury, as
your distributor
of Borroughs
products, has
the expertise
to incorporate
them into a
high-rise or
multi-level
Orion Enterprise from 3i Infotech
Provides Comprehensive and Affordable
Warehouse Management Tools
Manufacturers and distributors are being asked to perform
warehouse functions faster and with a higher degree of accuracy
than ever before. As a result, more and more companies are now
turning to a warehouse management system (WMS) as a tool to
maximize resources and maintain inventory, and thus improve
delivery times. This software can increase warehouse productivity
by reducing traveling time and suggesting putaway alternatives
for better space utilization. Maybury Material Handling now offers
3i Infotech’s Orion Enterprise WMS, an affordable system that
manages basic warehouse functions and more. This Warehouse
Management System can reduce problems caused by human
errors such as putting product away in the wrong locations,
picking the wrong product or picking the correct product in the
wrong quantity.
General warehouse management features include:
• An automated mechanism for specifying required actions
• Support for barcode, handheld and radio frequency technology
• Automated data collection for receiving, picking and shipping
• Availability of four tools to facilitate the implementation process
and minimize the associated costs
The Orion Enterprise WMS facilitates all activities associated
with receiving and putaway, such as:
• Physical control of pallets
• Palletization of material, with automatic capture
of pallet contents
• Intelligent putaway of material and products
• Auto match of purchase order, receiver and invoice
Maybury’s Service
Technician Teams are in
a League of Their Own
Maybury’s Service Technicians serve our customers in two
ways. Their first function is responding to breakdown calls by
troubleshooting and repairing powered equipment, including:
Crown fork lifts, Advance sweepers and scrubbers, dock
equipment and conveyor systems. Their other responsibility
is to perform whatever work is scheduled by our customers’
preventive maintenance programs.
Our 22 technicians are grouped into three self-managed
teams. We have found that the members of these teams
work very well together. The Team Leader (Senior
Technician) for each team goes through Crown Training, then
trains all the other technicians in the group. Our Service
Technicians work from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, and
emergency service is available for those clients who have
signed up for it.
When asked what sets Maybury’s Service Technicians apart
from the competition, Powered Equipment Operations
Manager John Durham listed all of the following:
1. INDUSTRY LONGEVITY – Maybury's Techs average over
10 years of material handling experience
Story Continues on page 5…
Furthermore, this 3i Infotech software system provides the
facilities to manage and control inventory in ways most suited to
each user’s specific business practices by providing features like:
• Physical and cycle inventory counting with optional
use of RF technology
• Separate units of
measure for stock
keeping and stock
issuing
• Ability to control and
account for inventory
in various stages of
completion
Finally, Orion
Enterprise WMS
supports all of the
activities associated
with the picking,
packing, shipping and
tracking of product to
customers. It offers
the user:
• The capability for
multiple picking
strategies
• Definition of packing
and shipping
instructions at item
level
• Integration with
third-party logistics,
for in-transit tracking
Orion Enterprise WMS is the affordable,
versatile way to manage your warehouse
There is so much more to the Orion Enterprise WMS than
we can describe in this short article. Please request more
information on what it can do for the productivity and profitability
of your business.
The latest hat being worn by Sandi
Gagner at Maybury Material Handling is
that of Parts Manager. Sandi is now
responsible for $600,000 worth of
inventory, with parts in stock based on the
parts usage of our customers. The Parts
Department footprint is 1127 square feet
and it has four 28-foot vertical carousels
for easy access to parts.
Maybury’s Parts Department has 94% offshelf
availability, which means that 94% of
the time the part that a customer needs is
available at the time the call from the
customer comes in. Sandi plans to ensure
that the Parts Department continues to
deliver seamless service, without glitches,
by documenting the processes already
practiced by the department.
Sandi Gagner
Assumes New Role as Parts Manager
In addition, our Service Advisors will be
working with Sandi to get the necessary
parts to Service Technicians as quickly as
possible. Sandi will also be responsible for
maintaining parts consignments for our
larger customers. Under this system, parts
cabinets are kept at customers’ sites,
ready for Maybury Service Technicians to
use as needed.
As Parts Manager, Sandi is in contact with
a variety of OEM dealers such as Crown,
Hytrol and EnerSys. She has recently
attended Crown After-Market Product
Training, where she increased her
knowledge of Crown products and her
understanding of online parts systems. She
will soon receive additional training in how
to help customers lower their Total
Ownership costs by using OEM parts from
the manufacturer.
Sandi will be overseeing our new Online
Ordering system, which is currently in the
process of being introduced to our
customers. In her new position, Sandi will
Could Bob's Discount Furniture Have Gotten Better Equipment for Their Warehouse Than That Supplied By Maybury? I DOUBT IT! (Continued from page 1)
Furniture wanted to improve storage safety and provide a safer
environment for their workers.
Bob’s Discount Furniture sent all components of the warehouse
project out for bid. “We’re shoppers and we put everything
out to bid,” says Bob Kaufman, the company’s president. “The
price is important, but customers service is just as important
to us.” They chose Maybury Material Handling to provide the
storage rack and stockpickers for this project because they
were impressed by the fact that Maybury offered product,
installation and service all under one roof. As Bob put it,
“Maybury’s pricing was competitive, but their customer
service made the difference.”
Maybury chose Interlake rack for this application. Most of the
total of 1.2 million pounds of rack was of the conventional type.
36 Crown stockpickers and 1.2 million pounds of
rack help keep Bob's warehouse running smoothly.
However, a set-back section and front post were introduced for
additional storage flexibility, safer storage and more cubic
density. The Interlake rack is smooth and powder-coated, with
recessed decking to minimize sharp edges. This design
protects against product damage and makes it easier for
operators to put away and retrieve the product. Maybury
worked closely with the warehouse designers to ensure that the
installed rack accommodated the requirements of the various
warehouse areas, resulting in a smooth installation.
Maybury also supplied Bob’s Discount Furniture with 36
stockpickers for the distribution center. The Crown 15SP48TT
stockpicker was chosen because it suited the narrow aisle
configurations in the application, and its weight and reach
capacities met the application's requirements. Its dependability
has been proven through years of in-service use in this type of
application. The 15SP48TT’s 4-point design provides the
ultimate in stability at the top, boosting operator confidence
when moving heavy product at top heights, and therefore
increasing efficiency and productivity. Additionally, the size of
the platform and the rack configuration leave almost no
unsupported areas.
Other equipment provided to Bob’s Discount Furniture
Warehouse by Maybury included an Advance CAPTOR
sweeper/scrubber and a rail-guided track on which to run it.
This sweeper/scrubber has brooms on both sides, and it
sweeps and scrubs at the same time. It goes rail-to-rail and
automatically performs its tasks. This is a great benefit to the
warehouse, since it keeps dust down and any contaminants
away from the stockpickers and product. Additionally, its
thorough cleaning performance helps to protect workers by
reducing dust and allergens.
Another product furnished to Bob’s Discount Furniture
by Maybury was a Starrco security structure, from which
guards can verify authorized entry into and exit out of the
compound. This heated and air-conditioned structure has
electricity and is environmentally safe. Finally, Maybury
provided additional barrier guard rails and safety gating
as the facility was completed.
Maybury seamlessly coordinated their efforts with those of the
project’s general contractor and lighting, HVAC and sprinkler
companies. And, as always, Maybury employed strict safety
practices throughout the project. During installation, the
supervisor ensured that the area where we were working was
free and clear of obstructions and hazards. Steel-toed boots,
hard hats, safety glasses and gloves were standard attire.
Protection during welding included welding helmets, gloves
and safety glasses. For fall protection, scissor lifts with
42”-high guard rails, as well as full-body harnesses with
lanyards, were used.
The management of Bob’s Discount Furniture appreciated the
high level of conscientiousness shown by Maybury. John
Fichera, Bob's warehouse manager, states, “They came back
to take care of the little things. I had a lot of ideas about the
details of the project, and Maybury figured out how to take
care of them.”
Likewise, Bob commented on Maybury's dedication and
ingenuity: “Maybury takes pride in their work – they put their
heart into it. Their ideas are very innovative, and they have very
smooth internal communication and coordination.”
Maybury is always enthusiastic about meeting material
handling challenges such as those presented by Bob’s
Discount Furniture. Let us “come on down” to your facility
to discuss your requirements.
Maybury’s Team for the Bob’s Discount Furniture
Warehouse Project was:
Project Supervisor – Jim Kulas
Assistant Project Supervisor – Dan Dupree
Account Manager – Bill Wise
The narrow aisle
configuration of the
new Bob’s Discount
Furniture warehouse
maximizes available
storage space. The
combination of the
narrow aisles and
the size of the Crown
stockpicker’s platform
means that there
are almost no
unsupported areas
when stocking
and retrieving
merchandise. The
15SP48TT’s 4-point
design provides the
ultimate in stability
at the top, boosting
operator confidence
and therefore
increasing efficiency
and productivity.
Features of Crown’s 15SP48 Series Stockpickers
Provide Users with Superior Value
Like all Crown material
handling vehicles, their
15SP48 Series of stockpickers are
engineered to perform their functions
as safely, efficiently and ergonomically
as possible. Two models are available –
one for platform handling and
the other for cart handling.
Both models are powered by a
24-volt electrical system. They
feature infinite speed control in
forward and reverse that can
be tuned to fit any application.
15SP48 Series trucks are
designed for safety and comfort,
with a “control room”
console that
positions the raise, lower, travel and power disconnect
functions at the operator’s fingertips. The characteristics of
the following components all contribute to the superior value
of these Crown trucks:
• Control Handle – time-tested, multiple-function handle
simplifies tasks and minimizes hand and wrist fatigue.
• Steering System – full-time power steering is controlled by
the operator’s left hand, while the right hand controls travel
direction and speed, raise/lower function and horn.
• Drive Unit – largest in its class of truck, the unit is both top
and bottom mounted to withstand the constant impact of
crossing expansion joints or docks.
• Drive Tire – also largest in this class of truck, this tire
improves traction and decreases downtime caused by
rough floors.
