OVER 3,000 people gained vital information important industry careers within the energy
sector during the two-day Energy Industry Competency Fair which ended yesterday.
The event was held in conjunction with the launching of the Energy Industry Competency
Framework (EICF) on Saturday.
With the framework in place and a number of major industry players guaranteeing
employment under its umbrella, hundreds of Bruneiansflocked to see what employment
opportunities were available at thePusat Latihan Mekanik in Tungku.
According to organisers, over 500 interested applicants had already signed up
for programmes under theEICF. Meanwhile, Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office,
Yang Berhormat Pehin DatuSingamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohd Yasmin
Hj Umar, said they had recently surpassed this year's target of recruiting 1,600 locals into
the industry and are now looking to hit the 2,000 mark by end of the year.
Those participating in the fair by way of demonstrations or recruiters were more than happy
to receive so many visitors over the two-day period.

Among them, Grame Dana, a 30-year-old local Iban who had worked as a welder for over 10
years and is now a lead welder for Aker Solutions. His task over the two days was to explain
to visitors what it took to be a welder, including their various methodologies, techniques and
equipment used in performing the task.
"The response has been great," he said, "There are many people, especially students, who
would love to know what I do in this kind of job and what kind of tools I use".
Like many in his profession, Grame started from the ground up, beginning as a 'Helper
Welder' at a fabrication plant. After a few years, he received training and passed certification
to become a full-fledged welder.
Lyerill Manis, a 27-year old trainee with BSP, has aspirations of becoming a maintenance
engineer. His choice to take up a career in the industry stemmed from wanting to give back
to the country.
"Since oil and gas is something that is related to Brunei, it is also something I want to do,"
he said.
Lyerill, part of the team at the Plant Technician booth, explained to visitors the equipment
they use and the machines they work on. Some students said the job was "payah" or
difficult. "What I told them is that it is not actually that hard once you get the training,"said
Lyerill.
Meanwhile, Nurhazidah Zakaria, a 20-year old Draughtsperson, also shared her experiences
in joining the industry as well as the technical skills required in her career. She explained
that when it comes to designing an offshore platform they need to think hard on how pipes
should be laid out because of the limited space on an offshore platform, as well as take into
account the levels of pressure and temperature of the pipes in the design as there will be oil
and gas flowing through them.
"It is actually a highly skilled job," she said, "and all you need is a strong familiarity with
AutoCAD, the programme we use to design 2D plans".
She hopes to pursue this as a long time career, progressing up the career ladder and
eventually becoming a designer doing 3D models of oil and gas platforms.
