The Alliance for Early Childhood is a non-profit, community collaboration organization. Its 

mission is to promote the healthy growth and development of children from birth to age 

eight, by providing support and services for the parents and professionals who teach and 

care for them. The Alliance provides a variety of programs and services to assist in the 

education, support and networking of parents and professionals in our community. 

ScreenBreak (formerly TV Tune Out Week) 

• Launched in 1995, this annual event 

allows families to evaluate the role that 

screens play in their lives. 

• Over 5,000 children participate in 

dozens of alternative activities 

throughout the community. 

Early Childhood Newsletter 

• Contains articles written by local and 

national experts; book reviews; research; 

practical parenting ideas; and more. 

• Distributed through our member schools.

Why participate in ScreenBreak? 

The Alliance for Early Childhood began “TV Tune Out Week” 

in 1995 to encourage families to turn off the television for a 

whole week and to explore other options. As technology has 

advanced, this special week has expanded to include all 

screens - TV, computer, video games and even texting. The 

name “ScreenBreak” was adopted in 2012 to reflect this 

inclusive approach. 

Families make their own rules about screen usage during the 

week, ranging from no screens (“cold turkey”) to limited or 

reduced use. Families are encouraged to enjoy their own 

activities at home or some of the numerous alternative 

activities that have been coordinated throughout the 

community. Activities range from arts and crafts to service to 

sample classes, like languages, oil painting, and baseball. 

This Guide contains the schedule of community activities for 

ScreenBreak 2013, advertisements from ScreenBreak’s 

financial supporters, creative “at-home” activity ideas, up-todate 

information about media literacy, and reference sources. 

ScreenBreak offers you the opportunity to examine the role 

that screens play in your family’s life, while connecting with 

your community in a unique way. Use this Guide as your 

resource!

Take a Break and... 

Make Homemade Playdough 

Kids of all ages are amazed when they learn how easy it is to 

make their own playdough with this classic recipe for fun! 

INGREDIENTS: 

• 3 cups FLOUR 

• 3 cups warm WATER 

• 1 1/2 cups SALT 

• 3 tbsp. OIL 

• 2 tbsp. CREAM OF TARTAR 

• Food coloring for COLOR 

MIX flour, water, salt, oil and cream of tartar in large pot. 

COOK on the stove over medium heat, stirring constantly 

until dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the 

pot. 

DIVIDE into equal parts per 

helper. 

KNEAD food coloring into 

dough. 

STORE in an air tight 

container. Do not 

refrigerate. 

SHARE with your friends. 

Create away! 

SAVE your creations by 

letting them air dry.

Fake Fried Eggs! 

This is a fun activity that you can test out in advance of 

April 1st, and eat the results. 

INGREDIENTS: 

• 4 tbsp. VANILLA YOGURT 

• 1 piece of canned PEACH HALF 

April Fools’ Day is right around the corner. Now is the 

time to start scheming to play a trick on Mom, Dad, or 

whoever isn’t reading this! 

Carefully spoon about 4 tablespoons of yogurt (or 

cottage cheese) on a small breakfast plate. Try to make 

a nice circle like a real fried egg white. 

Place a canned peach half on top in the center of the 

yogurt. This looks just like the yoke of the fried egg. 

Test it out in advance, and be sure to eat the evidence!

These impressive no-bake treats are deceptively easy 

to make with help from kids of all ages. 

INGREDIENTS: 

• 1 package (14.3 oz) OREO COOKIES 

• 1 package (8 oz) CREAM CHEESE 

• 1 package chocolate CANDY MELTS 

• Colored SPRINKLES 

DIVIDE Oreo cookies evenly into Ziploc bags and seal. 

SMASH cookies in Ziploc bags to a sandy consistency, 

using a pot, rolling pin, or 

even kids’ hands. 

DIVIDE cream cheese 

evenly into the crumb 

bags and seal. 

KNEAD cookie 

crumbs and cream 

cheese into a dough. 

CHILL dough in 

refrigerator until firm, if 

necessary. 

ROLL dough into bite-sized balls (perfect job for little 

hands). 

MELT chocolate candy in microwave oven. 

DIP cookie balls in chocolate to cover.

Play Cards - “Go Fish” 

Go Fish is a fun card game that will amuse and entertain 

3-6 players, ages 4-10, with a standard 52-card deck. 

RULES: 

Goal: Collect the most “books” of four of the same rank (i.e. 6s). 

Setup: Five cards are dealt to each player. All remaining cards are 

placed face down in a draw pile. 

Game Play: Randomly choose a player to go first. On your turn, 

ask a player for a specific card rank. For example: "Maddy, please 

give me your 6s." You must already hold at least one card of the 

requested rank. If the player you ask has any cards of the 

requested rank, she must give all of her cards of that rank to you. In 

the example, Maddy would have to give you all of her 6s. 

If you get one or more cards from the player you ask, you get 

another turn. You may ask any player for any rank you already hold, 

including the same one you just asked for. If the person you ask has 

no relevant cards, they say, "Go fish." You then draw the top card 

from the draw pile. If you happen to draw a card of the rank asked 

for, show it to the other players and you get another turn. However, 

if you draw a card that's not the rank you asked for, it becomes the 

next player's turn (the one who said “Go fish.” You keep the drawn 

card, whatever rank it is. 

When you collect a set of four cards of the same rank, immediately 

show the set to the other players and place the four cards face 

down in front of yourself. 

Winning: Go Fish continues until either someone has no cards left 

in their hand or the draw pile runs out. The winner is the player who 

then has the most sets of four.
