Why participate in ScreenBreak?
The Alliance for Early Childhood began “TV Tune Out Week”
in 1995 to encourage families to turn off the television for a
whole week and to explore other options. As technology has
advanced, this special week has expanded to include all
screens - TV, computer, video games and even texting. The
name “ScreenBreak” was adopted in 2012 to reflect this
inclusive approach.
Families make their own rules about screen usage during the
week, ranging from no screens (“cold turkey”) to limited or
reduced use. Families are encouraged to enjoy their own
activities at home or some of the numerous alternative
activities that have been coordinated throughout the
community. Activities range from arts and crafts to service to
sample classes, like languages, oil painting, and baseball.
This Guide contains the schedule of community activities for
ScreenBreak 2013, advertisements from ScreenBreak’s
financial supporters, creative “at-home” activity ideas, up-todate
information about media literacy, and reference sources.
ScreenBreak offers you the opportunity to examine the role
that screens play in your family’s life, while connecting with
your community in a unique way. Use this Guide as your
resource!
Your feedback is important to us. Please complete an online
evalution to share your ScreenBreak experience.
Get Your “Green Hour”
The National Wildlife Federation promotes a “Green Hour” for
children every day.
• Children who play outside are more physically active, more
creative in their play, less aggressive and show better
concentration. (Burdette and Whitaker, 2005; Ginsburg et al., 2007)
• In a typical week, only 6% of children ages 9-13 play outside on
their own. (Children & Nature Network, 2008)
• Sixty minutes of daily unstructured free play is essential to
children’s physical and mental health. (American Academy of
a place of acceptance and spiritual growth?
a place where your children can learn life lessons
from the world’s major religions?
For 50 years, LSUS has brought families of various religious
backgrounds together in a community of shared values;
compassion, respect, and responsibility. Each week we
invite a highly regarded speaker from a wide range of fields,
whose topic and insights give us inspiration and deeper
appreciation for the world we live in. We offer quality music
as another source of spiritual inspiration. Our Religious
Education (RE) program aims to provide children and teens
the spiritual and cultural literacy they need in this increasingly
interdependent world.
“My wife and I look forward to the speakers every week. If you’re the least bit
intellectually curious, you get to listen to people at the top of their field for 20
to 30 minutes, plus professional-level music and a snack. The RE program has
given our children exposure to a wide range of other religious beliefs and
practices. What’s not to like?” —Tony Hurtig, Evanston architect
Take a Break and...
Plan an April Fools’ Prank:
Fake Fried Eggs!
This is a fun activity that you can test out in advance of
April 1st, and eat the results.
INGREDIENTS:
• 4 tbsp. VANILLA YOGURT
• 1 piece of canned PEACH HALF
April Fools’ Day is right around the corner. Now is the
time to start scheming to play a trick on Mom, Dad, or
whoever isn’t reading this!
Carefully spoon about 4 tablespoons of yogurt (or
cottage cheese) on a small breakfast plate. Try to make
a nice circle like a real fried egg white.
Place a canned peach half on top in the center of the
yogurt. This looks just like the yoke of the fried egg.
Test it out in advance, and be sure to eat the evidence!
Creativity
Screen-based advertising and marketing contributes to: childhood
obesity, youth violence, family stress, underage drinking/tobacco
usage, and the erosion of creative play.
While we easily recognize many of those things as negative and
can identify the effects, creativity is less concrete. How important
IS creativity?
A global survey of 1,500 CEOs found that the number one
attribute for leadership they named was creativity. So, let’s
decrease screen time and foster creativity!
One more thought:
Aside from basics, such as food and shelter, what makes children
thrive?
• Being talked to
• Being read to
• Being played with
• Creative, unstructured play
At What Cost
Consumer Reports reported in 2011 that more than 7.5 million
American kids under the age of 13 have joined Facebook.
Note: Technically, Facebook requires users to be 13 years old to
open an account.
• 90% of children have an online history by the time they’re 2
years old.
• 50% of 5 year olds regularly use a computer or tablet.
• Bottom line, by the time kids hit middle school, they are
spending more time with media than with their parents or
teachers!
Learn About Money
KEY IDEAS FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN (2-6):
• Counting and sorting
• Coin denominations and value
• Adding up value, making change
AS YOUR KIDS GET OLDER (6-12):
The best way to teach kids about money, according to David
Owen’s book “The First National Bank of Dad,” is to amplify the
benefits of saving by creating a virtual bank for your family. Kids
receive weekly allowance (up to their age in dollars) deposited
into their account, which then earns a high rate of interest (5%
per month). Once you empower your kids to make their own
spending decisions, they will quickly see the
impact of bad purchases, and will internalize
the idea of watching their savings grow.
Keeping track of a virtual family bank is easy
with websites like FamZoo, which allows you
to create accounts to schedule allowance,
calculate interest, and monitor progress
toward savings goals. www.famzoo.com
Take a Break and...
Play Cards - “Go Fish”
Go Fish is a fun card game that will amuse and entertain
3-6 players, ages 4-10, with a standard 52-card deck.
RULES:
Goal: Collect the most “books” of four of the same rank (i.e. 6s).
Setup: Five cards are dealt to each player. All remaining cards are
placed face down in a draw pile.
Game Play: Randomly choose a player to go first. On your turn,
ask a player for a specific card rank. For example: "Maddy, please
give me your 6s." You must already hold at least one card of the
requested rank. If the player you ask has any cards of the
requested rank, she must give all of her cards of that rank to you. In
the example, Maddy would have to give you all of her 6s.
If you get one or more cards from the player you ask, you get
another turn. You may ask any player for any rank you already hold,
including the same one you just asked for. If the person you ask has
no relevant cards, they say, "Go fish." You then draw the top card
from the draw pile. If you happen to draw a card of the rank asked
for, show it to the other players and you get another turn. However,
if you draw a card that's not the rank you asked for, it becomes the
next player's turn (the one who said “Go fish.” You keep the drawn
card, whatever rank it is.
When you collect a set of four cards of the same rank, immediately
show the set to the other players and place the four cards face
down in front of yourself.
Winning: Go Fish continues until either someone has no cards left
in their hand or the draw pile runs out. The winner is the player who
then has the most sets of four.
