Offers More Than <strong>ScreenBreak</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Early</strong> <strong>Childhood</strong> is a non-profit, community collaboration organization. Its<br />

mission is to promote the healthy growth and development of children from birth to age<br />

eight, by providing support and services <strong>for</strong> the parents and professionals who teach and<br />

care <strong>for</strong> them. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Alliance</strong> provides a variety of programs and services to assist in the<br />

education, support and networking of parents and professionals in our community.<br />

<strong>ScreenBreak</strong> (<strong>for</strong>merly TV Tune Out Week)<br />

• Launched in 1995, this annual event<br />

allows families to evaluate the role that<br />

screens play in their lives.<br />

• Over 5,000 children participate in<br />

dozens of alternative activities<br />

throughout the community.<br />

<strong>Early</strong> <strong>Childhood</strong> Newsletter<br />

• Contains articles written by local and<br />

national experts; book reviews; research;<br />

practical parenting ideas; and more.<br />

• Distributed through our member schools.<br />

• Subscriptions available.<br />

Parenting Education<br />

• Nationally known speakers present on<br />

topics of current interest. This year, the<br />

<strong>Alliance</strong> has sponsored:<br />

• Dr. Eve Marie Arce spoke on teaching<br />

and raising twins and multiples.<br />

• Dr. Diane Levin spoke on helping<br />

children grow in today’s mediasaturated<br />

world.<br />

Professional Networking<br />

• Professional development opportunities<br />

are organized <strong>for</strong> teachers and<br />

administrators.<br />

• Promotes communication and<br />

collaboration among schools.<br />

Special Needs Roundtable<br />

• Provides in<strong>for</strong>mation, support and<br />

resources <strong>for</strong> parents and teachers of<br />

children with special needs.<br />

Teacher Tributes<br />

• An opportunity to honor an outstanding<br />

teacher or administrator.<br />

• Tributed educators are recognized at<br />

the annual Networking Dinner in<br />

January.<br />

• Schools are notified and the honorees’<br />

names are published in the local press.<br />

Transition to Kindergarten<br />

• Articulation meetings hosted <strong>for</strong><br />

kindergarten and preschool teachers<br />

throughout the year.<br />

• Meeting <strong>for</strong> parents of incoming District<br />

36 kindergarteners held in the spring, at<br />

which the superintendent explains the<br />

District’s philosophy and history.<br />

Let’s Play Initiative<br />

• A new ef<strong>for</strong>t to encourage young<br />

children to engage in child-initiated<br />

imaginative and creative play, both<br />

indoors and outdoors.<br />
