This is Redlands..... 


Redlands Community College is located in El Reno, 

Oklahoma, just 20 minutes west of Oklahoma City on I-40. 

Its proximity to Oklahoma City makes it both attractive 

and easily accessible to Dallas-Fort Worth, Amarillo, Tulsa, 

and Wichita. The main campus encompasses 55 acres and 

includes seven buildings geared toward learning for the mind 

and body. An additional 110 acres houses the Darlington 

Agriculture Education and Applied Research Center. The 

Redlands Royse Ranch, which serves as the headquarters 

of RCC bovine and equine operations, offers nearly 315 

acres of ranchland. 

Redlands’ mission is to prepare students for the future by providing a flexible curriculum, a supportive 

technology structure and a professional faculty and staff. Admission and enrollment are year round. 

The low student/teacher ratio at Redlands allows for more personal attention and individualized 

instruction. In addition, tuition is among the most affordable in the region. 

Life outside the classroom is enhanced by a variety of activities, including clubs such as Student 

Senate, Aggie Club, Phi Theta Kappa, Native American Club, Student Nurses’ Association, Black Culture 

Organization, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Redlands students also enjoy both intercollegiate 

athletics and intramural sports. Student activities throughout the year include the annual Cougar 

Bash, Spring Fling, music videos, concerts, and more. 

In addition to modern classrooms and media services, Redlands’ 

facilities include an art gallery, cultural center, conference 

center, seven computer labs with Internet technology, the 

Darlington Agriculture Education and Research Center, the 

Redlands Royse Ranch and Equine Center, Fitness Wellness 

Center, swimming pool, and sauna. 

El Reno is home to 16,000 residents who enjoy several 

parks, sporting facilities, and the Main Street downtown area. 

Crimson Creek Golf Course and Lake El Reno are located close 

to campus. Off-campus housing is available in a variety of 

locations. El Reno provides a small town atmosphere and 

charm with the benefits of being close to metropolitan area.

Dr. Larry Devane, President 

President Dr. Larry F. Devane has created a vision for Redlands that includes 

state of the art technology, varied course and program delivery modes, student 

focused facilities, numerous public and private education partnerships, and a 

high standard for competitive athletics. 

Devane was selected by the American Association of Community Colleges to 

the International Education Commission. The Commission will be focused on 

analysis of student access to U.S. Community Colleges and the role of the 

AACC in partnering with learning access at the associate level in countries 

developing community colleges. 

Devane continues to serve on the AACC National Homeland Security Task Force and the task force 

steering committee. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international two-year college academic honor 

society, has recognized Devane for his multiple years of service to PTK’s Oklahoma/Arkansas region 

as a Distinguished Presidential Ambassador. Further, PTK has awarded Devane the Shirley B. Gordon 

Award of Distinction. 

Devane’s state and community leadership roles are varied, including serving on the Board of Directors 

of the El Reno Chamber of Commerce Foundation for Progress, El Reno Federal Corrections Institute 

Community Advisory Council, Canadian Valley Integris Hospital Board of Directors, Vice President 

of the Canadian County Greater Oklahoma City Metro United Way, and Coordinator of Leadership 

Canadian County, as well as past President of the Oklahoma Two-Year Colleges Presidents Association. 

Devane has served as President of RCC since 1990 and was honored in 2001 by the Redlands Board 

of Regents with the naming of a campus building, the “Larry F. Devane Multi-Media Lifelong Learning 

Center.” He recently was named as the 2005-06 El Reno Citizen of the Year. 

Prior to coming to RCC, Dr. Devane was President of Highland Community College in Highland, Kansas. 

He attended Coffeyville Community College, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia 

State University, and his PhD in adult and occupational education from Kansas State University in 

1975.

Laci Tompkins, Head Coach 

Laci Tompkins begins her seventh year as head coach of the Redlands Community 

College Cougar Women’s Basketball Team. Last season Coach Tompkins guided her 

team to the NJCAA District Championship game where they were an overtime away 

from the National Tournament. They finished as Conference Champions, Region 

II Champions, and ranked eighth in the nation. The Lady Cougars now have been 

ranked in the Top 20 in the nation for six consecutive years. The team made an 

appearance in the National Tournament in Hagerstown, Maryland, in 2002-03. 

Coach Tompkins was published in “American Basketball Quarterly” in an article 

called “Dissecting Defense.” She also was selected for Who’s Who Among Executives 

and Professionals. She does many clinics and retreats as a guest speaker for various 

events including the ORU fall basketball clinic and the OK Coaches Association 

Summer Clinic. She has been named to the Kodak All-American Selection Committee and the Region II 

Conference Chairperson for the Women’s Basketball Committee. 

In her tenure, Coach Tompkins has coached six All-Americans, 14 Academic 

All-Americans, four Distinguished Academic All-Americans, three Arthur Ashe 

scholars, three Conference Most Valuable Players, 18 All-Region players, a 

National Tournament All-Tournament team selection, and the first two–time 

All-American in Women’s Basketball at RCC 

Coach Tompkins played collegiate basketball and softball at the University of 

Science and Arts of Oklahoma for four seasons. In basketball, she played 

against such WNBA stars as Crystal Robinson and Astou Ndiaya. She was 

head coach for the Bridge Creek High School girl’s basketball program for 

one season before coming to Redlands. Prior to Bridge Creek, Tompkins 

served as an assistant coach for three seasons at her undergraduate alma 

mater, USAO, and also coached the women’s softball team. 

Tompkins earned two degrees as an undergrad at USAO, 18 hours of master’s work at the University of 

Oklahoma, and earned a master’s degree from the University of Central Oklahoma. Tompkins, who grew 

up in Carnegie, Oklahoma, is married to Jeff Tompkins. The couple has one daughter, Lexi (6), a son, 

Tiger (2).

Steve Eck, Head Coach 

Redlands Head Coach Steve Eck enters his 30th year of coaching, with an overall 

record of 559-76. Coach Eck begins his sixth season at the helm of the Redlands’ 

program with an overall record of 151–20, averaging 30+ wins a season. 

Eck already has a National Championship and a National Runner-Up to show for 

his time at Redlands. Coach Eck led the Cougars, with 15 new players, to an 

overall record of 30-5 and the 2001-2002 National Championship in his first year 

of calling the shots at Redlands. During his second season, Redlands moved to 

the Division I level for the first time in school history. Redlands won the Region II 

championship, advanced to the NJCAA Division I Tournament, and finished with 

a 32-3 record. This was the first time a school moved from Division II to Division 

I and made the National Tournament their first year. The Cougars continued their 

success in 2003–2004 by winning the Regional II Championship and going to the National Tournament 

where they finished as runner-up to the crown. Redlands finished with a 35–2 record and was ranked first 

in the country in the final NJCAA poll. Last season Redlands lost in the Region II finals by one point. The 

team they lost to went on to win the NJCAA National Tournament. Redlands has been ranked in the top 

10 NJCAA poll every year and Eck has produced at least one All-American player each year at Redlands. 

Every sophomore at Redlands has graduated and gone on to play and excel at a four-year institution. 

Prior to coming to Redlands, Eck was the Associate Head Coach at NCAA Division I University of Missouri- 

Kansas City, where he helped orchestrate one of the best one year turnarounds in recent history. UMKC 

was 8-22 prior to Eck’s arrival, and during Eck’s season as Associate Head Coach, UMKC posted a 16-12 

overall record, including a 10-6 mark in conference. 

Before UMKC, Eck coached at Butler County Community College, where he compiled a record of 80-22. 

While at Butler, Eck guided his team to an eight-week hold on top ranking in the national NJCAA poll and 

was the first coach in school history to lead his team to a regional championship in his first two years. 

Eck led Butler to the Final Four during each of his three years at the helm. 

One of the most amazing feats of Coach Eck’s teams was at Wichita South High School. His teams won 

10 consecutive titles with a staggering record of 227-15, including a 153-7 mark in league play. His 

teams reached the state Final Four eight consecutive seasons, winning six state championships. Wichita 

South still holds a city league record of 51 straight consecutive wins in league action. Eck is listed as the 

highest winning percentage coach of high school coaches in the country with at least 200 wins. Wichita 

South finished in the top 20 of the national high school rankings every year. Every senior player received 

a college scholarship. Eck began his coaching career at Jardine Junior High School, where his teams 

posted an 84-19 mark during his tenure. 

The Wichita Eagle named Steve Eck as one of the ten best coaches in all sports for the 20 th Century. Roy 

Williams, Eddie Sutton, Tex Winter, Adolf Rupp were some of the other coaches honored. Eck earned his 

bachelor’s degree in history and physical education from Newman University in Wichita.

Jeff Tompkins, Women’s Assistant Coach 

Jeff Tompkins begins his sixth year as an assistant coach at Redlands Community College. 

Tompkins’ duties at Redlands include scouting, overseeing the offense,and assisting with 

the defense. A five–time Conference Coach of the Year recipient and previous state 

Assistant Coach of the Year award winner, Tompkins has been to the state finals three 

times. He owns two state titles, one as a player and one as a coach. Of note, both state 

title squads went undefeated. Tompkins serves as the Rush Springs High School Boys’ 

Basketball Coach. Last season the team finished in the finals of the Area Tournament. 

He was named Conference Coach of the Year, Duncan Banner Coach of the Year, and All-Area Coach 

of the Year. He was named “All State Coach” and “Sportsmanship Coach of the Year” by the Southwest 

Officials Association in 2005. 

Tompkins came to Redlands from Amber-Pocasset High School where he was the head boys’ basketball 

coach for three seasons. He was also an assistant coach at Carnegie High School where he helped lead 

the team to three consecutive state tournament appearances. Tompkins is the husband of Redlands Head 

Coach Laci Tompkins. They have one daughter, Lexi (6), and one son, Tiger (2). 

Jamie Morgan, Women’s Assistant Coach 

Coach Morgan joins the RCC staff after a successful basketball career at Southern 

Nazarene University, where she was named the MVP of the Sooner Athletic Conference 

Tournament. She also played one year at Oklahoma State University. While there, she 

did an internship in the Strength and Conditioning Program of the Athletic Department. 

Morgan has completed her undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition 

and Exercise Science/ Health Promotions. Currently she is working on her Master’s 

Degree in Management. 

Evvan Howell, Women’s 

Team Manager 

Evvan is the son of Karen Howell. 

He plays a vital role in assisting 

Coach Tompkins off the floor. He is 

in charge of fundraising and errands 

for the team. This will be his third

Kenneth Turner, Men’s Assistant Coach 

Kenneth Turner begins his first year as an assistant coach for the Redlands men’s 

basketball program. Prior to Redlands, Turner was an assistant men’s basketball 

coach at Panola College in Carthage, Texas, after returning from playing professional 

basketball in Italy. Turner graduated from Manhattan High School in Manhattan, 

KS. Turner played basketball and graduated from Hutchinson Community College 

before transferring to Oklahoma City University, where he played basketball and 

obtained his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. 

Tyler Brown, Men’s Assistant Coach 

Tyler Brown begins his second year as an assistant coach for the Redlands men’s 

basketball program. Brown returns to Redlands after assisting Kelvin Sampson, 

University of Oklahoma where he was a part of a Big XII Championship. Prior to 

the University of Oklahoma, Brown was a student assistant at Redlands Community 

College under Coach Eck. 

Donnie Tuley, Men’s Assistant Coach 

Donnie Tuley is the current boy’s basketball coach at Capitol Hill High School in 

Oklahoma City. His Redskins are an annual fixture in the Oklahoma Class 5A 

playoffs. Last year they reached the final four for the fifth time. Tuley is close to 

reaching the 400 win total, all at Capitol Hill. He played basketball and graduated 

from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. 

Yaphett King, Men’s Assistant Coach 

Yaphett King begins his first year as an assistant coach for the Redlands men’s 

basketball program. King returns to Redlands after playing professional basketball 

in Austria. King played for Coach Eck in his first and second season when he won 

a National Championship in 2001-2002 and Bi-state and Region 2 Championship in 

2002-2003. After Redlands, King transferred to Cal-State Fullerton and went to the 

NIT, winning two games and advancing to the Sweet 16. 

Prince Boyd, Men’s Student Assistant 

Prince Boyd starts his third year as a student assistant. He comes to Redlands 

Community College from El Reno High School where he played high school soccer. 

Prince is an avid runner and plans to become a biologist. 

Joel DeNicolo, Men’s Student Assistant 

Joel DeNicolo starts his second year as a student assistant. He comes to Redlands 

Community College from El Reno High School, where he was the student assistant 

for the basketball program. He plans to continue his education and have a successful 

career coaching, being an analyst, or a journalist.

Steve Eck, Athletic Director 

Steve Eck begins his third year as Athletic Director for Redlands Community College. 

He also serves as head coach for the men’s basketball program. Eck earned his 

bachelor’s degree in history and physical education from Newman University and has 

been a coach for the past 30 years. 

During his tenure at Redlands the Women’s Golf team has won the National 

Tournament, the baseball team won the Region II Tournament, the women’s basketball 

team has been Region II Champions and the volleyball team has stayed strong in the 

pursuit of the national championship. In addition, the men’s basketball team made 

an appearance at the National Division I tournament in 2002-03 and was National 

Division I runner-up in 2003-04. 

Prior to coming to Redlands, Eck was Associate Head Coach at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He 

has coached at Butler County Community College, Wichita (KS) South High School, and Jardine Junior 

High School (KS). 

Anthony Truelove, Athletic Trainer 

Fourth year Redlands Community College Head Athletic Trainer, Anthony Truelove, 

is responsible for preparing the athletes for both practice and games, while treating 

on-site injuries. 

Truelove is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), the 

Southeast Athletic Trainer’s Association, and the Alabama Athletic Trainers Association. 

A 1999 graduate of the University of West Alabama, Anthony received his certification 

from NATA that same year. He earned his Master of Arts in teaching physical education 

from the University of West Alabama in 2003. 

Prior to Redlands, he worked with HealthSouth Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in Birmingham, Alabama. 

He also served as the graduate assistant athletic trainer for the University of West Alabama. 

Tompkins’ Season Outlook 

The 2006-2007 basketball season looks to be an exciting year full of potential. The Lady Cougars 

are very rich in experience. “We are very mature and focused,” Coach Tompkins said of her team. 

“There is a lot of diverse talent on this team that will help us be deep and have more scoring weapons.” 

The team has seven returnees and eight newcomers. Of the eight, however, only four are freshmen, 

and the other are transfers. 

Leandra Johnson, Liz Semien, Natasha Waugh, and LeNece Glossett will be looked upon to 

provide scoring from the interior. Johnson and Semien will provide an experienced, powerful post 

presence. 

Lameka Oakes, Leanna Litsch, Natasha Normand, and Stefanie Cook will provide some needed 

shooting from three point range, along with freshmen Angie Yager and Princess White. 

Demesha Heard, Rudy Crenshaw, Chelsea Yarbrough, and Eva Duce will be juggling the point 

guard position. They all are good at seeing the floor and providing an upbeat tempo. 

Several slashers and girls who really can get to the goal include Kim Ford, Natasha Richardson, 

and Lameka Oakes. 

On a strong note, Oakes, Johnson, and Semien are all returning from being named to the All- 

Region team. 

“We want to be playing for championships,” said Coach Tompkins. “We are definitely focused 

on our ultimate goal, and we have young women who have the look in their eye and willingness to 

work.” 

The Cougars will be playing an excruciatingly tough schedule in the spring, as most of their 

opponents are Division I. Tompkins likes this opportunity to develop the team to be prepared for the 

playoffs.

Eck’s Season Outlook 

Coach Steve Eck returns four sophomores from last season’s 27–6 team. Last year, Redlands had their 

33 game Bi-State Western Division record winning streak snapped. Injuries plaqued Eck’s squad in the 

last ten regular season games, but the team came on strong and made it to the Region II championship 

game for the third time in Redlands’ four years of Division I play. Redlands lost in a tight game by one 

point in the final seconds. The Region II Champion went on to win the national title. This was the fifth 

consecutive year that Redlands has been ranked in the top ten in the NJCAA poll. The previous year 

Redlands finished thrid, first, and first in the final NJCAA poll. 

Lost to graduation was top scorer, Chris Brown (Arkansas State); Solomon HorseChief (University of 

Pacific); Vaidotas Volkus (University of Missouri); Ty Morrison (Creighton University); Stephen Musa (Lamar 

University); Gerrell Thomas (Northwestern State, LA). Every sophomore during Coach Eck’s tenure has 

graduated and received scholarships from various colleges. 

According to Eck, academics are a high priority for his team, Last year the men’s basketball team led the 

Division I schools with the highest grade point average in the nation for the fifth year in a row. The 3.38 

GPA came with a lot of work and dedication. 

“We will have a tough task ahead of us this season. Redlands is one of the teams on our opponent’s 

schedule they look forward to playing. We definitely have a big target on our chest,” said Coach Eck. 

Redlands will probably be ranked in the top five in the pre-season poll. 

The Cougars return Rodney Alexander, 6’7” small forward; Chris Cooks, 6’4½ “ guard; Tyree Scott, 5’11” 

point guard, and Carderro Nwoji, 6’0” shooting guard. Coach Eck also has red-shirts Al Fisher, Chris 

Rhymes, and Rod Green returning. Transfer Charles Bronson also will be counted on to help anchor the 

inside. There are many freshmen that have a promising future on this year’s squad. 

Eck’s teams have always been known for team defense and team unity. Last year, Redlands averaged 82 

points per game and led the country, giving up only 54.6 points per game. 

The Cougars are looking to return to the NJCAA National Tournament like they did in Eck’s first three 

years. Coach Eck stated, “Going to the Nationals during my first three years was quite an accomplishment 

for my former players. You need dedicated players and a little bit of luck to win the tough Region II. We 

want to enjoy the regular season by practicing hard and playing as a team and then be at our best for 

the postseason,” Eck said. Coach Eck’s favorite quote is, “So many play, so few understand.”
