Physics of the Bowling Ball
, phuEiat
Bowling enthusiasts will now have
available a 'scientific study of their
favorite pastime. At a meeting of
the American Physical Society recently,
Dr. L. W, Taylor, of Oberlin
College, told of apparatus that he
has develolled to study the motion
of thc ball in a bowling alley, A recording
clevice registers to thc hunclredth-
of a secoud the passage of
tl're ball at half ureter (about ?0
inch) iutervals. Irtstead of rolling
the lrall by hand, a catapult is used,
so that the {orce used cau accurately
be controlled. Studies already made
with the device inrlicate that the accepted
theories of the Inll's motion
arl not quite correct, but that the
friction seems to vary with the ball's
speed.
Dear Professor" Taylorl
About a year ego we sent you a questionnalre on!
The &rrpl-olrment of Asslstants or Fellows ln Und.ergraduate
Physlcs Courses. I wlsh to tlrenk you for the courtssy
of youn nep1y.
I am encloslng henewlth a sumflsry of the results
obtalned. from EO lnstltutlons. I regret that ru6 lro*
celved. only ?0 repllee firom a total of 42 lnstltutlons
to whlch the questtonnelre was sent, and. thatp corrsequentLy,
the reeuJ-ts cannot be consldered very concluslve.
We were lnterested in ftndlng out not only
how asslstants on fellows wene used and how satlsfacto{y
thein wonk proved to be, but also how many lnstltutlons
used such help. Inasmuch es all but one of the lnstltutlons
fnom which we necelved. answgt's used esslstents
or fel-lows, tt ts a posstble, but certalnly not a verTr
doflnlte, conelusLon that those who dld not neturn the
questlonnaire dld. not use asslstants or fellows.
