favorite pastime. At a meeting of<br />

the American Physical Society recently,<br />

Dr. L. W, <strong>Taylor</strong>, of Oberlin<br />

College, told of apparatus that he<br />

has develolled to study the motion<br />

of thc ball in a bowling alley, A recording<br />

clevice registers to thc hunclredth-<br />

of a secoud the passage of<br />

tl're ball at half ureter (about ?0<br />

inch) iutervals. Irtstead of rolling<br />

the lrall by hand, a catapult is used,<br />

so that the {orce used cau accurately<br />

be controlled. Studies already made<br />

with the device inrlicate that the accepted<br />

the Childrenf s Court for inpr:oper guardianship emd the Department of Publlc ltlel-fare<br />

because of destitutJ.on.<br />

Leake end Watts Orphan House ls both a cottage end eongregate lnstitution.<br />

<strong>The</strong> present trend in progresslve chil-d care is arvay fron congregate institutions, end<br />

the enphasle Ls put on p1aeJ.ng these ehil,iren in foster hsrnes. <strong>The</strong> cottage systern ls<br />

considered a great i-mprovement over the eongregate buil-ding, but thi"s J-s not eonsidered<br />

as satisfactory as foster homes, where the chlldren wlll heve a more normal- home l-ife.<br />

<strong>The</strong> corporation also malntains properby et TLvoli, New York, left to it by<br />

the late General iliertts de Peyster. At first this was used es a vscetion home for the<br />

ehildren in the Ionkers lnstitution but la.ter through n specie,l fund, it ras enlarged<br />

and equipped as s. yes.r rou,nd farrn school for boys. fn the sunurer sone of the boys in<br />

t'he Yonkers lnstltution are $eirt there for a vaeation. Although neny improvenrents<br />

have been made in the fm:m school durS-ng the past few years, it ls still felt that<br />

because of lts dl-stsnce frorn the main institutlon, lt should be used as n veeatlon<br />
