Motorists always enjoy a bit of 

the sun, until it gets to midday! 

No matter what colour 

your car is, the hot sun, especially 

quickly turn the car into a baking 

oven. The situation is then aggravated

You may be an excellent driver and 

a master of road rules, but there’s 

nothing like a basic knowledge 

of defensive driving to minimize 

risks on the road. The following are 

important defensive driving techniques: 

Intentions 

Sudden stops, turns, and lane changes often 

lead to accidents because they catch other 

drivers by surprise. Hence, one of the basic 

rules of defensive driving is to clearly communicate 

to other drivers exactly what you are 

about to do. For this reason, it is crucial that 

your brake lights, head lights, signal indicators 

and other driving lights are working. If they 

are not, have them checked right away. 

Be predictable 

Having all your indicators in good working 

order is great, but they won’t help much if you 

can’t be predictable. Defensive driving is synonymous 

with being predictable. If you’re signalling 

a left turn, then make a left turn. Don’t 

signal that you’re going left then suddenly 

turn right. Don’t keep signalling a left or right 

turn then continue driving straight ahead for a 

great distance. In defensive driving, one never 

makes a move that confuses other drivers on 

the road. Surprises are great, but never when 

you’re driving. 

Route 

Always be sure where you want to go. There’s 

nothing quite as dangerous as making a sudden 

turn or stop, which is something that 

drivers do when they are not sure about where 

they are headed. If you’re confused about 

where you want to go, you’re probably doing 

the same to other road users as well. If you’re 

lost, park your car and regain your bearings. 

Check a map or even ask someone for directions. 

The worst thing you can do is drive 

around aimlessly. 

Signalling 

One of the best defensive driving techniques is 

to signal every time you turn or change lanes. 

That way, you never catch other drivers by 

surprise. Make signalling a habit. Even if the 

road appears to be deserted and there seem 

to be no other cars around, signalling your 

intent is always an excellent defensive driving 

practice. 

Warning 

When making a full stop or slowing down for 

whatever reason, it’s a good defensive driving 

technique to let other drivers know of your 

intention. You can do this by tapping the brake 

pedal a couple of times so that your brake 

lights flash and clue in others behind you that 

you are slowing down or stopping. This is 

especially important if the driver behind you 

is driving fast and approaching quickly. 

Anticipate the worst 

In defensive driving, it pays to anticipate the 

mistakes of other drivers on the road. For 

instance, many drivers routinely signal a turn 

but don’t turn at all. Meanwhile, others don’t 

signal at all and then suddenly turn. Many 

people disregard stop signals or try to run red 

traffic lights. So keep a watchful eye out for 

these instances.

The first-generation Nissan Murano had a profound impact on 

the SUV market when it was introduced for the 2003 model 

year. In addition to being one of the first crossovers on the 

market, the first generation Nissan Murano offered a fresh

Murano, introduced for model year 2009, maintained its 

strong position as the halo vehicle for Nissan crossovers. When

The all-new Nissan Murano is available with 

a standard 3.5-liter DOHC V6 rated at 196 kW 

(260 hp) and 352 Nm of torque. Also standard 

is an advanced Xtronic transmission tuned for 

quick response and smoothness. Fuel economy 

is reduced by approximately 20 percent versus 

the current generation Murano, due to overall 

weight reduction, enhanced aerodynamics, and 

engine/transmission efficiencies. Like the previous 

generation, the all-new Nissan Murano 

offers responsive handling and a comfortable 

ride through use of a 4-wheel independent 

suspension featuring a front strut/rear multilink 

design. Also standard are 4-wheel disc 

brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) 

and power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering.

2014 Hyundai ix35 – Tweaked 

looks, enhanced performance 

Initially, the ix was the Hyundai Tucson. The Tucson made its maiden 

debut in 2005 and represented Hyundai’s first entry into the longestablished 

small crossover SUV segment. The first-generation Tucson 

became Hyundai’s official “entry-level” SUV, and it offered a favourable 

combination of attributes, including an available V6 engine, a generous 

list of standard equipment and a lengthy warranty. 

However, the Tucson looked rather 

dowdy, had a decidedly low-budget 

feel to its interior, and never 

really registered on most consumers’ 

radar as a mainstream option. 

That changed with the second-generation Tucson, 

which premiered all over the world as the Hyundai 

ix35, in 2010. The second generation featured sharp 

exterior styling and a slick interior to match. Four 

years later, Hyundai has released an updated version 

for 2014. 

Looks 

The 2014 Hyundai ix35 combines dynamic, 

sculpted, performance-oriented styling with 

thoughtful everyday utility. With an overall 

length of 173.2 inches, a width of 71.7 inches 

and a height of 66.3 inches (with roof rails), 

2014 Hyundai ix35 has a great stance and road 

presence. The design team fused a light, elegant, 

and sporty upper body with belt lines flowing 

off both the front and rear wheel arches, to a 

tough, planted lower body so that it is assertive 

in the way it sits on the road. 

The profile of 2014 Hyundai ix35 features 

a sports car-like theme with a double-zigzag 

treatment for the wheel arches that wrap around 

the available wheels. The concave sills have a 

wedge-shaped profile that extends rearward 

and wraps around into the rear bumper. New to 

the 2014 Hyundai ix35 are LED Daytime running 

lights and positioning lights. The hexagonal 

grille, bisected by a bold chrome styling line, 

remains unchanged. Curvaceous pressings on 

the front and rear fenders remains unchanged. 

Its dramatically sloped rear glass features a pronounced 

rear spoiler, which improves on the 

2014 Hyundai ix35 aerodynamics. 

Performance 

One of the most significant upgrades for 

the model is the replacement of the 2.0-litre 

Theta II petrol engine with a new, superefficient 

Nu 2-litre Multi-Port Injection engine. 

The new engine offers a more even and efficient 

delivery of power and torque – with peaks of 

116 kW (155 hp) at 6 200 r/min and 192 Nm at 

4 000 r/min. respectively. The new petrol engine 

is available in combination with a new six-speed

To make the 2014 ix35 even more versatile, 

Hyundai engineers added an advanced electronic 

AWD system. The AWD system is auto- 

matically activated under any driving condition 

when needed, distributing the power equally, 

and optimizing driving performance. 

Interior 

The high-tech cockpit is fitted as standard 

with Hyundai’s signature blue lighting, tilt 

and telescopic steering wheel, steering wheel 

mounted audio and cruise controls, electrically 

powered windows and door locks, remote keyless 

entry and fold-away mirrors with electric 

control. The front cup holders are illuminated 

with blue light as well. The 2014 Hyundai ix35 

has always had outstanding rear legroom and 

now second row passengers can recline their 

seats for even more comfort. The rear seats 

feature 60:40 split for increase of boot space. 

The interior of the 2014 Hyundai ix35 the upper 

door trims are now finished in higher-quality 

materials. All models have dashboard air vents 

that are ringed in chrome, and the windscreen 

receives a shade band, completing the visual 

refreshment. The spacious interior is further 

enhanced by the panoramic sunroof. A 4.3- 

inch colour touch screen audio with a standard 

rear-view park-assist camera is in charge of 

the entertainment. The system plays compact 

discs, accesses digital music files employing 

Bluetooth streaming audio and allows driver 

and passenger to access their personal listening 

devices through the iPod/USB/auxiliary inputs. 

Bluetooth audio wirelessly streams music from 

a phone to the audio system. 

Verdict 

The 2014 Hyundai ix35 remains a great 

choice for anyone looking for an affordable and 

well kitted crossover. 

The latest updates make the smallest SUV 

from Hyundai more competitive and better to 

take on its rivals. Order the 2014 ix35 from

Concept 

Mazda Hazumi – KODO goes compact 

One look at Mazda’s new generation 

models, the Mazda CX-5, Mazda 6, 

and Mazda 3, confirms that the KODO 

design is defined by a dynamic, living 

expression of motion. The Hazumi is 

yet another example of KODO’s vast 

potential and how well it adapts to 

different vehicles of different sizes. 

T 

he concept’s name is a good fit both for 

the look of the car and its target market. 

Hazumi is a Japanese word meaning to 

“bound” or “spring up” and was chosen to 

convey an image of a small but vigorous 

animal, bursting with energy. 

The headlamps and grille are positioned low to 

the ground as possible, giving the front face a sharp 

look. The LED guiding rings add depth and solidity 

to the headlamps. Another KODO trademark, the 

aluminium signature wing, underscores the grille 

before cutting through the headlamps, imparting 

a deeply sculptured facial expression. With 

its short overhangs and pillars the Hazumi displays 

the athletic silhouette of a sports car when 

viewed from the side. 

The aluminium wheels feature a dynamic 

design. The contrast between the radiant sheen 

produced by the aluminium milling process and 

the dark metallic paint give the wheels a taut, 

three-dimensional feel. A long line starts from 

the bonnet, crests over the front wheel and runs 

all the way to the rear, while an overlapping line 

peaks over the rear wheel. The firmly planted 

rear wheels support the high hipline and the 

steeply inclined back window. The distinctive 

oblong rear combination lamps echo the look 

of the headlamps. 

The Mazda Hazumi also marks the world 

premiere of the SKYACTIV-D 1.5. This compact 

and lightweight clean diesel engine is 

designed for ultra-efficient internal combustion 

just like the bigger SKYACTIV-D 2.2. The 

engine offers dynamic performance and great 

efficiency. This model also features i-ACTIV- 

SENSE advanced safety technologies based on 

Mazda Proactive Safety. This is Mazda’s safety 

philosophy aiming to maximise the range of 

conditions in which the driver can drive safely 

and minimise the risks that lead to accidents. 

Speed is at the essence of the interior 

shapes, which spread out from above the instrument 

cluster to the door trim and centre console. 

The instrument cluster is designed around 

the driver’s centre axis. It features a single, centrally-positioned 

gauge with displays on either 

side. The passenger space begins immediately 

with an instrument panel shaped like the wing 

of an airplane, creating a comfortable feeling of 

openness. The centre console is suspended like 

a bridge, enhancing the feeling of space and 

creating more room in the foot wells. The interior 

is designed with black leather as the base 

and white leather used in certain places such 

as the instrument panel. This modern colourcoordination, 

which is both bold and charming, 

makes the interior look youthful and refined at 

the same time. 

Destiny 

The Mazda Hazumi Concept is a sneak preview 

at the next generation Mazda 2, known by 

many here in Kenya as the Demio. The production 

version of the Hazumi Concept is already 

undergoing tests before its maiden debut.

The all-new Toyota Corolla 

– A unique visual signature 

185km/h. Top of the range Corolla launched in 

Kenya last month are fitted with a 1.8 litre unit, 

which delivers 103kW (138 hp) and 173 Nm 

of torque, available with manual or automatic 

transmission. The 0-to-100km/h dash comes 

up in 10.2 seconds and top speed is recorded 

as 195km/h. Fuel consumption rate is a reasonable 

6.4-litres per 100km. The All-New Toyota 

Corolla shares the proven front MacPherson 

strut and rear torsion beam suspension systems 

of its predecessor. However, significant revisions 

to both front and rear systems promote 

improved ride comfort combined with greater 

agility. 

Interior 

Taking style cues from the bold new exterior, 

the All-New Toyota Corolla’s indoor environment 

plays up the width of the cabin with 

a strong horizontal dashboard design. Topped 

by a soft non-reflective upper surface which 

flows seamlessly over the driver’s instrument 

binnacle, the dashboard face combines convex, 

soft-touch padding with a recessed centre console 

panel finishes in piano black. The operational 

feel of the pedals and shift lever has also 

been refined. 

The pedals have been positioned to help 

prevent unintended operation, and the stroke 

and firmness of the shift lever have been optimised 

for a smoother shift feel. The capacity 

and usability of the All-New Toyota Corolla’s 

comprehensive range of storage spaces have 

been improved. They include a glove box, coin 

box and lidded compartment in the dashboard, 

a centre console box and cup holders, overhead 

sunglasses storage, front door pockets designed 

to hold a 1.g litre bottle or a road map and rear 

door pocket space for a 0.5 litre bottle. Top of 

the range features include leather seats, smart 

entry and start system, 7 airbags, multi-functional 

steering wheel, Bluetooth with cell phone 

interface, cruise control, and 7 speed CVT with 

sport mode, among others.

Verdict 

The All-New Toyota Corolla boasts significant 

increases in fuel economy and rear 

passenger room, and also has more distinctive 

styling. Although rivals have sportier designs 

and more entertaining driving dynamics, a 

Corolla nonetheless makes an excellent choice 

for those seeking a comfortable, reliable, and 

economical compact car. The franchise holder, 

Toyota Kenya located along Uhuru Highway 

in Nairobi, launched the All-New Corolla last 

month.

Cumulative worldwide corolla sales exceed 39.7 million since the 

nameplate was launched in 1966. Now in its 11th generation, the 

Toyota Corolla is sold in more than 150 countries. Toyota has spent 

decades refining and improving the Corolla, while staying true to its 

core values, which is one of the many reasons why it remains Kenya’s 

most popular saloon. 

The Toyota Corolla is the quintessential 

economy car that is small, 

inexpensive, fuel-efficient, and reliable. 

Put fuel in it, and the occasional 

oil change and it provides dependable 

transportation well past the 500,000- kilometre 

mark. 

Design 

Carrying design hints of the Furia concept, 

the new car is bang on trend and a lot 

more assertive, especially in its front end treatment. 

The end result is an All-New Toyota 

Corolla that is imposing without being overly 

aggressive. Upfront, the headlamp and the grille 

openings form a prominent T-shaped motif. 

Horizontal trim bars of the upper grille are 

visually extended into more expressive headlamp 

clusters to place focus on the width of 

the saloon. Equipped with a halogen low beam 

lamp for improved visibility, the headlamp 

design reinforces Toyota’s new design language 

and lends the All-New Corolla on-road presence 

while providing a unique visual signature. 

The All-New Toyota Corolla’s profile is 

dominated by muscular front and rear wheel 

arches. A character line links the top of the 

front wheel arches and the rare lamp cluster. 

The wheel arches house a choice of wheels and 

wheel covers. Sculptured handles are aligned 

with the character lines on the door. To the 

rear, the recurrent trapezoidal look is mirrored 

by the licence plate recession and lower 

bumper styling. The crisp line of the boot lip 

is underscored by wide new rear lamp clusters 

connected by a chrome license plate trim for a 

cleaner, more prestige appearance. 

Performance 

The All-New Toyota Corolla is available 

with a choice of power units. The mid-spec 

performance package is a 1.6 litre Dual CVT-i 

engine that churns out 90Kw (120 hp) and 154 

Nm of torque. The 1.6- litre power plant consumes 

0.6 litres more compared to the 1.3-litre 

unit. Acceleration time is 11.1 seconds for the

Peugeot focused on practicality rather than style when designing the 3008. As a result 

the Peugeot 3008 offers a bit more functionality than other compact crossovers in the

the aging Peugeot 3008’s design was in desperate 

need of an upgrade. Peugeot has responded by ushering 

in an All-New model. 

Design 

The character of the All-New Peugeot 

3008’s front face has been completely redesigned. 

The grille and the fog lamp trims appear 

to form a single chromed part emerging from 

the bodywork. The air intake is adorned with 

two thin chromed strips. The headlamps are 

designed in detail with a subtle contrast of 

materials. The main beam is integrated on a 

black mask surrounded by a chromed part. The 

LED direction indicators and running lights 

add a sophisticated touch to the headlamps. 

The “Lion” badge dominates this rich, highquality 

front face. At the side are fine touches 

of chrome on the window upper trim, the body 

sills, and the mirror shells. The “Lion” also 

adorns the tailgate, accompanied by the name 

of the brand. New LED tail lights, with a dark 

tint and look like three floating claws, have a 

sharp design and emerge from the lamp with 

a 3D effect. 

Performance 

Two petrol power units are available with 

the All-New Peugeot 3008. All engines have 

a displacement of 1.6-litres. Entry level petrol 

versions feature a 1.6-litre unit with a total 

output of 88 kW (120 hp) and 160 Nm of 

torque. Paired with this particular unit is a 

5-speed manual gear box. Fuel consumption is 

pegged at 6.7 litres per 100km. Next in line is 

the 115 kW (156 hp) 1.6-litre unit with a maximum 

torque figure of 240 Nm. This particular 

engine features a 6-speed manual and 6-speed 

automatic. Fuel consumption with the manual 

transmission is 6.9 litres and 7.6 litres with the 

automatic. 

The most powerful version of the 1.6- 

litre unit has 120 kW (163 hp) and 340 Nm 

of torque. Paired with the 120 kW engine is a 

6-speed automatic as standard. Fuel consumption 

is a reasonable 8.4 litres per 100km. The 

All-New Peugeot 3008 rides on MacPherson 

front suspension. This suspension permits rigorous 

road holding and precise steering. At the 

rear, the suspension features a deformable cross 

member, two trailing arms, and an integrated 

anti-roll bar, which limit roll and improve rear 

wheel traction. 

Interior 

On opening the door, the passenger compartment 

proves to be a new source of surprise 

and attraction. The light provided by the 

panoramic glass roof reveals the instruments 

and controls with supreme ergonomics with 

high quality and clarity. In the centre of the 

driver’s field of vision, above the dashboard, the 

‘head-up’ display shows key information on its 

retractable polycarbonate strip. At the centre of 

the dashboard the retractable screen displays 

the interface for the audio-navigation, the trip 

computer, the front, and rear parking assistance 

and the image filmed by the reversing camera. 

All controls are grouped together on the centre 

console which extends to the rear seats. 

With their forearm resting ideally on the 

armrest (that hides a capacious storage space), 

the driver can switch from one function to 

another with ease which promises great reactivity. 

For everyday practicality, the passenger 

compartment has numerous storage compartments, 

amounting to a total of nearly 50-litres. 

The split tailgate, which can bear a load of 

200 kg, allows for a very accessible boot. The 

Multiflex interior allows one to adapt the boot 

of the All-New Peugeot 3008 to suit your 

requirements due to the three-position boot 

floor and the folding rear seat backs. The volume 

of the boot can varies from 512 litres to o 

1604-litres with the rear seats flat on the floor.

Verdict 

The All-New Peugeot 3008 is a stylish

500,000 units all over the world proving that 

this particular Lion’s qualities suit lots of buyers.

– tweaked looks, great performance 

They say that in the event of Armageddon, the only thing to survive will be cockroaches. Well, 

there’s a good chance you’d see some Ford Rangers cruising around, too. This is because the 

Ford Ranger is one of the toughest and most dependable pick-ups in the market. Recent updates 

especially in the current range have brought about car like comforts in the interior. However, the 

ruggedness and dependability still remains unchanged. 

The Chevrolet Cruze does not have history 

on its side. The Chevrolet division 

of General Motors has historically 

done “big” well: Big pick-ups, 

big family saloons and big V8 muscle 

cars. When it comes to small cars, though, Chevrolet 

wasn’t that good in creating them. However, all 

that’s changed with the introduction of the compact 

Chevrolet Cruze saloon in 2011. The introduction 

of the Chevrolet Cruze was an honest first-class 

upgrade, which leaves pedestrian design and suspect 

quality behind in favour of well-rounded sophistication 

that meets its world-class competition head-on. 

Recently GM updated the Chevrolet Cruze for the 

very last time as they work on finishing up on the 

next generation model. 

Design 

The 2014 Cruze’s design still has the bold 

face - including a two-tier grille with the iconic 

Bowtie logo - which is Chevrolet’s signature 

look around the globe. However, the front 

bumper now features curved air intakes, with 

chrome touches and fog lamps, large air splitter 

and a central air intake. The disticnt arching 

roofline connects a steeply raked windshield 

and fast-sloping rear pillars to give the 2014 

Chevrolet Cruze a sporty, coupe-like proportion. 

The sporty aesthetic is also seen in prominent 

headlamp housings that wrap around the 

corners and sweep upward in the fenders and 

sculpted hood, as well as a short rear end. The 

wheels are at the corners, with minimal front 

and rear overhangs. All the elements work 

cohesively to give 2014 Chevrolet Cruze an

Verdict 

The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze’s handling 

remains sharp and precise, but the most welcome 

improvements give the saloon a more 

refined interior, vastly improved styling and 

quality. With a variety of truly impressive competitors 

available these days, we wouldn’t exactly 

call it a class leader, but the wholly competent 

Cruze shows that Chevrolet can now do “small” 

as well as “big.” However, before you dash for 

the Chevrolet Cruise’s competitors kindly visit 

General Motors East Africa to try it out. The

The Audi Q3 is the German 

company’s entry into the compact 

SUV market. There are plenty of 

cars like this around as they’ve 

become increasingly popular in 

recent years. 

Crossovers offer the chunky, rugged 

looks of a big off-roader but are 

easy to drive and as cheap to run 

as a small family car. Every aspect 

of the Q3 showcases the best Audi 

technology. Many of its solutions are straight 

from the luxury class. 

Looks 

The Audi Q3 has a distinctive, robust and 

sporty road stance. The front end of the 

compact SUV is intensively sculpted and sets 

strong accents. The single-frame radiator grille 

is dominated by the vertical elements. The large 

air inlets with the horizontal bars underscore 

the powerful appearance of the compact SUV 

and harbor the standard fog lights. Like its big 

brothers, the Q5 and the Q7, the headlights of 

the Audi Q3 are wedge-shaped. The side view 

is dominated by the flowing, coupe-like roof 

that quickly begins sloping back downward. 

The roof flows into an unusually flat D-pillar 

reminiscent of the A3 models. 

The pillar lends the rear an energetic look 

that is further accentuated by the long roof 

spoiler. The pronounced wheel arches with the 

offset wheel wells house wheels up to 19 inches 

in diameter. The door handles are distinctly 

bow-shaped, and the housings of the side mirrors 

sport LED turn signals. The wrap-around 

tailgate emphasizes the width of the Q3’s rear 

end - a characteristic feature of the Q model 

series. The tailgate has a three-dimensional 

look, drawing back several centimeters above 

the license plate. The electric button to unlock 

the tailgate is located beneath this edge. The 

large, undivided tail lights have a wedge shape 

similar to the headlights and feature a threedimensional 

look. 

Performance 

Powering the Audi Q3 is a choice of three 

engines; one TDI and two TFSI units. All 

the three four-cylinder engines combine direct 

injection with turbocharging, and feature a 

start-stop system. With power outputs ranging 

from 125 kW (170 hp) to 155 kW (211 

hp), these engines are as efficient as they are

which the coolant temperature and fuel level 

indicators have been integrated, have black 

dials, white numbers and red needles. The luggage 

compartment has a volume of 460 liters. 

A two-piece, removable boot area cover hides 

the contents from view. The split rear seat 

backs can be folded down quickly and easily, 

in just one step, without having to remove the 

head restraints. When loaded to the roof, boot 

volume in this configuration increases to 1,365 

liters. The tailgate opens electronically, including 

via the remote key fob, and swings up very 

high. A handle running the width of the tailgate 

makes it very easy to close again, and it latches 

with a satisfyingly solid sound. 

Verdict 

The Audi Q3 offers a perfect plent of compact 

dimensions, off-road ability and luxury. 

The compact crossover is a great choice for 

anyone looking for an all-round car. The Audi 

franchise is not represented in Kenya at the 

moment. However, there are comfired possibilities 

that the franchise is planning its return to 

the Kenyan market soon. Prices in Africa start

seen in this conservative nameplate namely, 

daring styling and sporty driving dynamics.

Wish list 

Porsche raised the public’s collective eyebrow 

when it decided to enter the sport-utility 

vehicle business in 2003 with its bulbous 

Cayenne. However, despite the grumblings of 

purists, this midsize luxury SUV has proven 

itself worthy of the vaunted Porsche name 

over the course of two generations. With a 

line-up that stretches from a hybrid V6 to 

a twin-turbo V8, the Porsche Cayenne isn’t 

your typical midsize SUV. Nor is it the most 

practical or family-friendly. 

Indeed, the Porsche Cayenne’s high load floor and lack of a 

third-row seat option limit are a testament to that fact. But 

in terms of spirited driving, there are few better. Thanks to 

its all-wheel-drive system, razor-sharp steering, and superb 

brakes, the Porsche Cayenne demonstrates surprising dexterity 

around corners. For people who want a Cayenne that minds their 

pocket, the S Diesel is the right choice. This particular version of the 

Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 

- Efficiently performs 

Cayenne offers a driving experience that is typical of 

a Porsche combined with the great efficiency. This 

is why we have nominated it to the special Wish 

List choice. 

Design 

From the front the Cayenne S Diesel is 

characterised by the larger centre air scoop at 

the front further accentuated by two smaller air 

intakes at the side. The darker panels within the 

headlight units and the silver-coloured rings on 

the headlights create even greater presence and, 

together with the positioning lights on the side 

air intakes, give the Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 

an even more striking look of power and performance. 

The design of our Wish List choice 

emphasises above all the long and stretched 

engine compartment lid as well as the flat rear 

roof pillar with its dynamic sweep towards the 

rear. Two rectangular single tailpipes complete 

the rear design. Seen from the side, the 

Porsche Cayenne S Diesel stands out particularly 

through its long, sleek, and dynamic look 

Performance 

The Porsche Cayenne S Diesel is powered 

by a 4.2-litre V8. The eight-cylinder power has 

an output of 382 hp (281 kW) and 850 Nm 

of torque. The engine delivers its tremendous 

torque between 2000/min and 2750/min, which 

forcefully propels our Wish List choice right 

from the start. Energy-saving measures such as 

thermal management, electrical system recuperation 

and an automatic start/stop function 

limit its combined fuel consumption to just 8.3 

l/100 km. 

The performance figures makes this particular 

Cayenne the most powerful diesel propelled 

Porsche. The combination of a powerful 

eight-cylinder and eight-speed Tiptronic S 

requires the intelligent PTM (Porsche Traction 

Management) active all-wheel drive to deliver 

the incredible power on the road. This Porsche 

Traction Management system is specially configured 

to offer benefits in terms of vehicle

Process on using 

the car Jack 

The most obvious reason to jack up a 

car is to change a tyre, but other jobs, 

such as inspecting brakes or carrying 

out an oil change, may also require 

you to get under the car. It’s important 

to observe the following safety precautions before 

you jack up the car: 

Use the jack only to get a car off the ground. 

Never, at any moment, use a jack to hold a car 

up in place! 

Block the wheels, to prevent them from rolling 

before jacking up a car. Use bricks, wooden 

wedges, or metal wheel chocks to block the 

wheels at the end of the car that aren’t being 

raised. 

If you’re changing a tire and you have nothing 

to block the wheels with, park near the curb 

with the wheels turned in. This may not keep 

you from getting hurt if the car rolls off the jack, 

but at least innocent motorists and pedestrians 

won’t have to deal with a runaway driverless 

vehicle! 

Never change a tyre on a road or major highway. 

Call road service or an automobile association 

such as the AA of Kenya for assistance. 

Ensure you have also parked the car away from 

the road to avoid blocking other road users. 

Place some life savers on each side of the road 

to alert other drivers. 

Always park a car on level ground before you 

jack it up. If you get a flat tyre on a hill and 

can’t coast to the bottom without killing the 

tyre completely, park close to the curb, turn the 

wheels toward the curb, and block the downside 

wheels securely to prevent the car from rolling. 

Put the car in Park, or in First gear if you have 

a manual transmission, and engage the parking 

brake before you jack up the car. 

After ensuring that you have followed the 

precautions proceed to jack up the car: 

1. Place the jack under the part of the car that it 

should contact when raised. If you’re using jack 

stands, place them near the jack. If you place 

your jack incorrectly, you can damage your car. 

To find the proper place to position the jack for 

your particular make and model of a car, check 

your owner’s manual. 

2. If you have a scissor jack, insert the rod or 

wrench over the knob, and then crank. If you 

have a hydraulic jack, place the handle into the 

appropriate location, and pump up and down. 

Use nice, even strokes, taking the jack handle 

from its lowest point to its highest point on each 

stroke to cut down on the labour involved. 

3. If you’re using a scissor jack, simply turn the 

crank in the opposite direction. If you’re using a 

hydraulic jack, use the rod to turn the pressure 

release valve. The jack will do the rest of the 

work for you.

You detect the smell of oil or exhaust 

fumes in the passenger compartment: The 

cause could be burned oil from the engine area. 

Another cause is a faulty exhaust pipe under 

the car, which lets exhaust gases into the car 

through the floorboards. 

You smell something sweet and steamy: 

Check the temperature gauge or light to see 

whether your engine is overheating. 

You smell burned toast: It may be an 

electrical short circuit, or the insulation on a 

wire may be burning. Check around under the 

bonnet. Driving is a bit risky, so get to the nearest 

petrol station, or have AA roadside service 

come to you. 

Car odour means trouble. But you can 

use them to diagnose mechanical 

problems. The only odours allowed 

inside your car should come from 

foodstuff that you’ve in. If the odour 

is from any of the items in the following list, take 

immediate action to correct it: 

A smell of burning rubber from under the 

bonnet: One of the car’s hoses may have come 

loose and landed on a hot part of the engine. 

Rescue it before it melts through. 

You smell something burning with the 

bonnet closed: Feel your wheels. If one is hot, 

a brake shoe or pad may be dragging. If none 

of these problems are the cause, an overheated 

clutch in a manual transmission car may be 

the cause. 

You smell oil burning: First, check the oil 

dipstick. You may be running out of oil or your 

engine may be overheating. Your temperature 

gauge may also be broken. If neither is the case, 

look for signs of oil leaking onto the engine 

block or exhaust manifold. If no oil is not leaking 

check the transmission fluid dipstick. If the 

transmission fluid is very low, it can be burned 

in the gearbox because the gears aren’t lubricated 

enough and are getting very hot. 

You smell fuel: If you have trouble starting 

the car, the engine may be flooded. Wait a few 

minutes and try again. If the smell comes from 

under the bonnet, check your fuel injection 

system and make sure that it isn’t leaking fuel. 

Check all visible fuel lines and hoses that lead to 

the fuel tank. If they’ve rotted or are disconnected, 

you’ll smell fuel vapours without seeing any 

leaks. Taking a look under the car after it has 

been parked overnight may help, but remember 

that fuel evaporates quickly, so the clues may be 

stains rather than wet spots. Don’t smoke while 

you check for a fuel leak! Fuel ignites easily, and 

its vapours can explode. If you smell fuel, and 

you haven’t just filled your tank, find the source 

of the leak and have it repaired immediately. 

You smell rotten eggs: The smell is probably 

coming from the catalytic converter, which 

is part of the exhaust system. The converter may 

be malfunctioning, or you may have a problem 

with your engine. 

Remember: If you detect any problems with 

your car that you can’t fix, take it to the nearest 

mechanic or authorised dealer for servicing 

and repair.

You can get your car windows crystal 

clear without a lot of hassle. Car 

windows and mirrors have something 

other parts of the car’s don’t have namely 

transparency and reflectiveness. The soap you 

use on the rest of the car isn’t going to cut if you 

want invisible windows and gleaming mirrors. 

Keep the following in mind when cleaning windows 

and mirrors: 

1. Employ the same products you use to clean 

glass in your home to clean your car’s glass 

windows and mirrors. Many of these products 

simply spray on and wipe off without rinsing. 

2. Be sure to use a soft rag to avoid scratching 

the glass: Used newspaper also does a pretty 

good job. 

3. Wait to clean the inside surfaces of the windows 

and sunroof, if fitted, until you do the 

interior of the car. 

4. Use vertical strokes on the outside of the 

windows and sunroof, and horizontal strokes 

on the inside, so that you can see at a glance 

which side the streaks are on when you’re wiping 

off the cleaner. 

5. Lift your windshield wipers away from the 

glass to clean under them, and don’t forget to 

wipe the wipers, too. A dirty blade can streak 

or scratch the glass. Handle the wipers gently 

to avoid bending the mechanism. Remove dead 

leaves that may have accumulated in the well 

under the wipers. 

6. Carry a package of pre-moistened glass 

cleaner wipes and a clean soft rag in your car 

to spruce up the windshield when visibility gets 

cloudy. 

Consider your car’s shining trim to be its 

jewellery and keep it protected and looking 

good. Several excellent polishes are designed 

specifically to clean chrome without scratching 

the delicate layer of plating. These preparations 

also retard rust and leave the surface bright and 

shining. You can use chrome polish on other 

metal surfaces, too. If you can’t handle cleaning 

the shinning trim, visit a popper car wash for 

assistance.

road rage 

Driving, whether for work or leisure, 

can be enjoyable. However, 

at times, driving is stressful and 

demanding. Drivers need to be 

fit, relaxed, and rested for the 

demands of safe motoring. Good driving requires 

a responsible attitude to other road users as well 

as a high level of concentration, observation, and 

anticipation. 

The reality is that everyone makes mistakes. 

Aggressive, selfish, or impatient attitudes influence 

the way we drive. This can develop into 

a tendency to take irresponsible risks, such as 

tailgating, exceeding speed limits, undertaking, 

or jumping red lights. Our emotional mood also 

influences our behaviour on the road. 

Drivers commonly express how they feel in 

the way they drive. Traffic delays and congestion 

can also influence our frame of mind. Life 

stresses such as relationship anxieties, financial 

or employment problems, domestic or workplace 

arguments influence our mood and can 

affect our attitude to driving and safety behind 

the wheel. 

Many drivers find different ways to keep calm 

but here are some suggestions on dealing with, 

and avoiding, potential conflict or “road rage.” 

Setting off 

When you are emotionally upset or psychologically 

caught up in something else, you are 

not able to give the road the full attention it 

deserves. Try to ensure that you are in a calm, 

good mood before driving. Plan time into journeys 

in case you are delayed by traffic as this can 

help to alleviate the pressure you feel if you’re 

running late. 

Driving 

When on the road, do not over-react or panic 

about another driver’s error. They may be 

unaware of their actions. Try to stay away from 

them and concentrate on driving well and 

within the law. Avoid getting into conflict with 

another driver and keep your mind focused on 

your driving. 

Concentrate on driving responsibly, staying 

calm and think logically. When confronted 

by an irate driver, don’t engage in gestures, 

headlight flashing or sounding the horn as this 

will serve no purpose and may exacerbate the 

situation. It will also distract you. Refrain from 

eye contact with an angry or aggressive driver 

as this has the potential to make the situation 

worse. 

If you find you are being followed by an impatient 

driver (tailgated), do not allow yourself 

to be “pushed” along, intimidated or made to 

increase your speed. Without actually pulling 

over or stopping, find a safe opportunity to allow 

that driver to overtake you. Circumnavigating a 

roundabout to enable a tailgater to get past you 

will add little time to your journey but can make 

a significant difference to stress levels 

Under no circumstances should you endanger 

your safety or well-being by getting out of the 

car to deal with an angry or aggressive driver. 

If confronted with a road rage situation, remain 

in the car with the windows closed and door 

locked. If necessary, call for help on a mobile 

phone (not while driving). If you accidentally 

cause another driver to become angry, hold up 

your whole hand as a friendly acknowledgement 

of your mistake. This can help diffuse 

tension. If your mood is affected by an incident 

during your journey, once you have moved 

away from any danger, find an opportunity to 

stop and take time out. 

Try to find time occasionally to reflect on 

your driving and think about how mood or 

stress levels affect your driving actions. If you 

are able to recognise when you’re stressed, 

angry or impatient while driving, you will be 

better equipped to deal with these emotions 

changes, as they are unavoidable. Remember, 

most motorists play their homes, work places, 

financial levels and relationships on the road as

Shawn Shuman, a window tint film installer 

for over 12 years, younger motorists generally

order basic grades of “metalized” film or dyed

be required for proper operation of the myriad 

electronics in today’s cars. “Your car may have

Shuman says. The exact fit also matters. Do 

not use quacks or poor technology, as your car

10. When does the title pass to me? It is 

a practice that the log book is kept with the 

lender, along with the signed transfer documentations,

Your tyres provide the contact between 

your car and the road. Clearly they 

play an extremely important part not 

only in your car’s performance, but 

overall safety. Without the right tyres, 

or tyres that are worn, your car’s ability to maximise 

traction with the road is compromised, and that 

can have serious consequences. So when looking 

for new tyres it is best to go to experts. It also pays 

to have a little knowledge of the basics as well, so 

you can feel assured you are getting the right tyres 

for your car. 

The first thing to be aware of is the specifications 

your car’s manufacturer has outlined for 

your car. You don’t have to stick to a particular 

brand, but the tyres you buy must fit the wheel 

properly, and be of a size and type recommended 

by the manufacturer. It is also important 

that both tyres on one axle have the same tread 

pattern & tread depth, or braking, steering and 

handling could be comprised. 

You may notice on the side of tyres there is a 

complex looking code. This provides all of the 

information you need to know about that tyre. 

For example, if a tyre has a code like this on its 

side - P205/65R15 94H – here’s what each part 

means: 

‘P’ means it is a passenger tyre 

205’ refers to the section width of the tyre 

when it is properly inflated. The section width 

is the distance between the tyre’s exterior sidewalls. 

‘65’ is a percentage describing the tyre’s 

‘aspect ratio’. This ratio relates to the comparison 

between the tyre’s section height and width. 

‘R’ stands for radial, which is a common tyre 

type and relates to its construction type. 

‘15’ is the wheel’s diameter in inches 

‘94’ describes the tyre’s load rating, which in 

this case is 670 kg. This is an index and relates 

to the maximum load that a tyre can carry at its 

maximum speed capability 

‘H’ is a code for the speed rating and in this 

case it means it is rated to travel at 210 km/h, 

when carrying a maximum load of 670 kg 

This may all seem quite complex but in essence 

it is just a very simple way of conveying all the 

information you need to know when the times 

comes to replacing your tyres. Don’t be afraid to 

do some research upfront and see what tyres get 

good reviews in car magazines and professional 

websites. Your tyre expert will also have some 

recommendations. When expertly fitted and 

aligned a good set of tyres is pivotal in providing 

efficient performance and safety, just as the 

maker intended, and will be one of the most 

important purchases you make for your car.

‘slipstreams’ over the car. Secondly, the actually 

believe that the road ahead will be clear. Stay 

well back and allow yourself plenty of room to 

stop if necessary. 

Fog limits what you see ahead of the 

road. It’s more or less like driving at 

nigh with your headlights tuned off. 

Fog is caused by moisture in the air 

turning into fine vapour droplets - this 

happens when the temperature drops to what is 

called the ‘dew point’. You must always use lights if 

visibility is less than 100 metres. Your lights won’t 

help you to see in foggy conditions, however, they 

help others to see you, therefore the more light the 

better. Use your headlights and fog lamps. Parking 

or dim-dip lights are as good as useless in daytime 

fog because they will not penetrate the vapour sufficiently. 

If the fog is really thick during the day, use 

full headlights and spot-lamps or stop and wait for 

the fog to clear. 

Using fog lights 

Front fog lights are usually mounted low down 

and give a broad flat beam. This reduces the 

amount of light that is reflected back by water 

droplets in the air. The most benefit from front 

fog lamps can be gained at night, especially on 

roads with street lighting. Front fog lights will 

help you see the white lines and kerbs better. 

Use them with dipped headlights. Full lights are 

no use because the fog will simply reflect the 

light back making it harder to see. If the fog is 

really dense at night, switch off your headlights 

but leave on your front fog lamps other drivers 

will still be able to see you, but you will see 

more clearly because less light will be reflected 

back by the water vapour in the air. However, if 

the fog is really dense it’s best not to drive. 

Keeping safe distance 

Because you can’t see very far ahead you will 

have little or no warning if the car ahead of 

you stops suddenly. This is especially the case 

if it is using rear fog lights, which can mask the 

effect of brake-lights. The scenario can be made

In 1973, Volkswagen debut the very first Passat into the global market. The Volkswagen 

Passat has long been a favourite among shoppers looking for a little more luxury and style 

in their midsize family saloon. For many folks, the Passat fills the gap that exists between 

normal, everyday family cars and the financially out-of-reach luxury brands. 

Displaying a classy, restrained style 

inside and out, the Volkswagen 

Passat gives the impression of quiet 

competence, which is borne out 

by its refined driving character. A 

quality cabin and competent handling, along with 

a supple ride, are typical Passat traits. The 2007 

Volkswagen Passat was the 6th generation model 

and debut in March 2005. The saloon continued to 

be on sale until 2011 when it was replaced by the 

current 7th generation model. 

Design 

The 2007 Volkswagen Passat is characterized

Kenyans looking for the 2007 Volkswagen 

Passat from used car lots should expect the car 

to be fitted with one of eight available engines. 

The sizes of the power units range between 

1.6-litre to 3.2-litre for the most powerful V6 

version. The FSI (petrol) engines feature homogeneous 

direct injection. The output of these 

engines is 85 kW / 113 hp, 110 kW / 147 hp and 

- in the case of the Turbo FSI - 147 kW / 197 hp. 

The 3.2 litre V6 FSI engine with 184 kW / 265 

hp is the most powerful petrol unit. The range 

of diesel engines available consists exclusively of 

advanced TDI engines. Their respective outputs 

are 77 kW / 103 hp, 103 kW / 138 hp and 125 

kW / 167 hp, which is the most powerful TDI 

unit. All engines are paired with an automatic 

(DSG). The DSG has six forward gears and 

shifts extremely quickly. 

Interior 

A glance into the interior of the 2007 

Volkswagen Passat shows a clear, fresh, and 

sophisticated design consisting of top-quality 

materials and a simple look. The interior’s large 

proportions are the result of the transversally 

installed engine and significantly large dimensions 

in every direction. As well as benefiting

know the differences between the models. Head 2 Head comparison of

Both Mercedes-Benz and BMW are at the top of everyone’s list when 

searching for a new mid-sized luxury saloon. 

Both the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 

and the 2014 BMW 5-Series offer 

similar performance and luxury features 

but one of them is definitely the 

one. Both models recently received 

updates, which improved their overall look and 

drivability. In this month’s Head 2 Head, you will 

find out which, between the 2014 BMW 5-Series 

and 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, is probably the 

one to go for. 

Meet the competitors 

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a long 

favourite in the midsize luxury segment. The 

luxury saloon has provided an appealing mix of 

comfort, performance, and safety for decades. 

The trademark qualities of Mercedes-Benz 

cars, such as vault like solidity and leadingedge 

technology, have also contributed to the 

E-Class’ great popularity among luxury buyers. 

No matter what model year you’re considering, 

this midsize Mercedes remains an excellent 

choice. It’s not an overstatement to say that the 

BMW 5-Series sets the standard for premium 

sport saloon. Most BMW 5-Series have an 

inline six-cylinder engine, though BMW has 

offered V8 versions since 1994, and the current 

generation now uses a turbocharged fourcylinder 

as its base engine. When people ask us 

to recommend luxury cars, BMW’s 5-Series is 

invariably high on the list. 

Round 1 – Design 

At the front of the 2014 Mercedes E-Class, 

the headlamps comprise all functional elements 

with a single headlamp lens. Flowing light 

elements within the headlamps help ensure 

that the “four-eyed” look has been graphically 

retained, affording the saloon an unmistakable 

night design. The low-beam headlamps and the 

daytime running lamps feature LED technology 

as standard. The swept-back bonnet and front 

bumper have also been redesigned to blend in 

more with the front. With its flowing lines, the 

bonnet follows the new design idiom in a sleek 

and very straightforward manner. The saloon’s 

contours merge elegantly and smoothly into the 

frame surrounding the radiator trim and the 

headlamps. The bumper is now free of all light 

functions. 

The striking sporting elegance is the standout 

design characteristic of the 2014 BMW 

5-Series saloon. The design is defined by the 

hallmark BMW proportions created by a long 

bonnet, long wheelbase, short overhangs and 

set-back passenger compartment. At the front 

end, additional contour lines for the BMW kidney 

grille surround and the restructured lower 

air intake accentuate the car’s sporting appearance. 

All the variants of the 2014 BMW 5-Series 

model family are fitted with Xenon headlights 

as standard. Joining the LED fog lamps on 

the options list are Adaptive LED Headlights. 

Horizontally structured and three-dimensional 

surfaces play a defining role in the new look of 

the rear end. 

Although the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 

received a major update to its overall design, 

it still doesn’t stand out compared to the 

composed and strikingly looking 2014 BMW 

5-Series. 

Round 2 – Performance 

The 2014 5-Series employs BMW 

TwinPower Turbo technology to ensure an 

exemplary balance of driving pleasure and fuel 

consumption across the engine range. Just like 

its rivals, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has 

made a significant step forward when it comes 

to efficiency. This comes courtesy of new, powerful 

BlueDIRECT engines featuring sophisticated 

direct injection technology. Compare the 

2014 Mercedes-Benz E200 and the 2014 BMW 

520i and you quickly notice the near similarities 

between the two cars when it comes to 

performance. The 2014 BMW 520i is powered 

by a four-cylinder 2.0-litre 135 kW (181 hp) / 

270 Nm engine. The three pointed star uses a 

four-cylinder unit as well. The power unit has 

similar output of 135 kW (181 hp) but with 20 

Nm more torque. The 2014 Mercedes E-Class 

has equally refined engines as the 2014 BMW 

5-Series. However, the E-Class’ slow responding 

7-speed transmission cannot compare with 

BMW’s fast shifting 8-Speed automatic. The 

Beemer also consumes 6.2-litres per 100 km, 

which is 0.2-litres less, compared to its three 

pointed star rival. The difference appears minimal 

but in this age of high fuel prices, every 

litre counts. 

Round 3 – Interior 

Both the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and 

2014 BMW 5-Series deliver on luxury and 

comfort in their own different way. The 2014 

Mercedes-Benz E-Class interior features a twopart 

trim on the dashboard that stretches across 

the entire width of the interior. The design for 

the air vents, an analogue clock between the two 

central air vents as well as redesigned controls

the form of a bench seat with three rear headrests, 

an armrest with stowage compartment. 

Generous levels of space, exquisite materials 

and high-quality workmanship all contribute 

to the premium ambience characteristic of 

the 2015 BMW 5-Series. The cockpit is inclined 

towards the driver. The horizontal lines of 

the instrument panel accentuate the feeling of 

space. All displays, knobs and buttons serving 

comfort functions are situated centrally for use 

by the driver and front passengers. Both front 

seats come standard with 10-way power adjustment 

including head-restraint height. The seating 

position has been improved especially for 

the rear passengers. The large luggage compartment 

and the 40:60 folding rear-seat backrests 

provide greater flexibility in enlarging the car’s 

transport capacities. 

The 2014 BMW 5-Series now offers almost 

the same amount of room just as the 2014 

Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The Beemer is fractionally 

smaller all-round, but for the first time 

it can seat four large adults in comfort. Hence 

when it comes to comfort, the three pointed 

star wins.

Vivo Energy Kenya launches a 

mobile fuel testing laboratory 

As a Shell licensee distributing Shell’s superior 

products, Vivo Energy Kenya must maintain 

the Shell brand standards. This means being 

totally dedicated to improving the company’s 

product offering and serving its customers in 

the best way possible. 

Vivo Energy Kenya, the company 

that distributes and markets Shell 

branded fuels and lubricants, has 

launched a mobile fuel testing laboratory, 

a first of its kind by an 

Oil Marketing Company (OMC) in Kenya. This 

initiative will augment the stringent quality control 

processes that are already in place throughout the 

company’s distribution chain. The Laboratory will 

test products randomly from Shell service stations 

and commercial customers nationwide as a boost 

to Shell’s existing quality control checks across the 

countrywide network. 

Every motorist’s nightmare is buying adulterated 

fuels, since it damages and shortens the 

lifespan of the vehicle’s engine. With the new lab 

launched in Kenya, it will be possible to check 

fuel quality at any Shell Service station in addition 

to the tests that are routinely done at the 

Vivo Energy Kenya’s laboratories in Mombasa 

and Nairobi. 

The mobile lab, fitted into a vehicle, will be 

collecting samples randomly from Shell stations 

and commercial customer sites, and conducting 

basic quality tests on site, while also returning 

samples to the main laboratories at the depots 

for further analysis where issues are detected. 

Speaking during the launch, Vivo Energy Kenya 

Managing Director, Polycarp Igathe said, “we 

value our customers and we go through all 

the processes to ensure that they receive quality 

products whenever they visit our service 

stations. We are alive to the fact that some 

unscrupulous traders are dealing with adulterated 

fuels. This is why we have gone an extra 

mile to bring in the mobile Laboratory in to the 

market to ensure that we beef up our screening 

and testing process.” 

The mobile testing lab is equipped to produce 

key test results within 30 minutes. It has a 

temperature-controlled box to store samples, 

and also has a sealed/lockable cabinet that is 

mounted to the floor of the vehicle. The mounting 

includes special suspension mechanisms so 

that the vibrations of the moving vehicle do not 

negatively affect the samples. 

The mobile testing lab will be working in collaboration 

with the trained quality marshals 

already present at every Shell Service station. 

Quality marshals receive product, compare 

loading parameters against offloading parameters, 

regularly test the product to reconfirm 

quality, test and confirm the calibration of the 

pumps, and handle any quality related issues at 

the station. 

Igathe added,” Safety is paramount in Vivo 

Energy Kenya operations and nothing is left to 

chance. We appreciate the efforts that the government 

and its various energy bodies are doing 

to curb fuel adulteration. To further boost these 

efforts we urge them to support us as we continually 

seal avenues that allow this vice.” 

The Mobile Laboratory was officially commissioned 

by a team comprising of, SGS Managing 

Director. Albert Stokell, KEBS Manager 

Petroleum Paschal Vusa and the Vivo Energy 

Kenya Managing Director, Polycarp Igathe. 

Vivo Energy Kenya, the company that distributes 

and markets Shell-branded fuels and 

lubricants since February 2013 following the 

completion of acquisition in November 2012. 

The Shell brand has been in Kenya for over 

100 years. Vivo Energy Kenya has a storage 

capacity of 85,200m³ and 120 retail stations 

with a majority offering of Shell Cards and 

convenience retail stores. Vivo Energy Kenya 

employs 163 permanent employees and provides 

indirect employment to over 200 people. 

Vivo Energy operates in Retail; Commercial 

Fuels (Marine, Mining and Aviation in partnership 

with Vitol Aviation); Liquefied Petroleum 

Gas and Lubricants in Botswana, Burkina Faso, 

Cape Verde, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, 

Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Morocco, 

Mali, Namibia, Senegal, Tunisia, Uganda and 

Mozambique 

The company employs around 2,000 people and 

operates 1,431 retail stations under the Shell

around 150,000 metric tons at plants in seven 

countries (Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya,

branded lubricants.
