About This Guide
In previous cruise guides we have detailed the individual ships and given a snippet of
information relevant to each one, along with an overall assessment by our customers.
However, more than ever we are seeing ships of a near identical build within the same brand
and so this year we thought we would take a wider look at some of the major brands rather
than the individual ships. Look out for the ‘Focus On’ pages, which aim to give you more of
the flavour of what you can expect from each brand.
Welcome
Welcome
A very warm welcome to your 2015 cruise guide. The
emphasis remains very much on “your” as it is clear to
us that the unbiased, honest and validated
information contained within is of real value to you.
This is therefore your publication, filled with facts,
tips, thoughts and a bit of fun to help you choose
your next cruise.
At the start of writing this publication, I reflected
upon events of the past year. Where were we 12
months ago, what could we see ahead and how
would world events outside our control shape the
future of our industry? We have witnessed many travel companies consolidating, closing down
or just not keeping up with the times. At Broads, I like to think of us as blending the best of
yesteryear whilst still being fleet of foot and embracing technology and industry changes. We
passionately believe in giving our customers unhurried, truthful, courteous and professional
advice. We like our customers to return to us in the future, to recommend us to their family,
friends and colleagues and to think of us not just as a travel company but as a long standing
business and an extension of their most trusted friends. We openly acknowledge that we exist
as a result of our customers and it is only through you entrusting your travel arrangements to
us that we prosper into the future. We do not take this responsibility lightly and it is important
to us that we deliver our side of the deal.
So, upon reflection, I think we are in for a very exciting time for our industry. We are
beginning to see the makings of a ground shift in booking patterns. It goes without saying that
cruise passengers are a fiercely determined lot, who either have or are still having to work
hard, but equally are determined to enjoy the fruits of their labour with an annual cruise or
two. By now, many of you will have sampled a wide range of ships and just when you think
you have seen them all, along comes another new build which pushes the imagination of ship
construction further beyond our wildest dreams. At the same time, the world continues to get
smaller and cruise companies keep adding new destinations to their schedules. As I tell my
staff, we are very lucky to be living in times where such change continues unabated.
So, why do I think there will be a change in client booking patterns? Quite simply, the seismic
change announced in the 2014 spring budget will enable those over 55 to release money
previously trapped in their pension funds and with careful and proper planning, many will
access their funds to enjoy fantastic and memorable holidays perhaps a little earlier than they
would otherwise have been able to do so. We are certainly seeing a lot of advance interest in
many cruises and therefore my recommendation is that if there is a cruise you have set your
heart on, don’t leave it too long before committing to it. Get the cabin you want on the ship
and dates that you want and enjoy your cruise.
Please remember, we are not just here to manage your booking. We want to receive your
feedback and we want to know your future travel plans. Maybe there is a wedding in the
family coming up? In which case, why not contact us for honeymoon ideas? What we are
saying is that we value your business whether it be a cruise, a UK or European weekend away
or a magical long haul holiday. You can be sure that your travel arrangements are in safe
hands and we will do our utmost to ensure you have a truly memorable holiday.
With best wishes,
Doesn’t It Look Big?
How often have you heard those words as you approach the quayside? Usually followed by
the statement – “it makes you wonder how they stay afloat!”
Within this guide, you will find information on a wide range of cruise ships, ranging from the
smallest up to the world’s largest at 225,282 tons. Regardless of size, they all have one thing in
common, namely buoyancy and displacement, which is known as the Archimedes Principle.
This is where a ship will displace the same amount of water as its own mass. The pressure of
the water pushing up on the hull of the ship will negate the downward gravity of the ship, thus
enabling it to float on water.
If only it were that simple – critically these super ships must be made of lightweight and sturdy
materials that enable hulls to push the water out of the way and keep the ship afloat. If ships
were built of too heavy materials they would be unable to displace the water before
becoming submerged. Modern construction techniques are used to build the hull in the
shape of the letter “U” as this disperses the weight of the ship across a greater area and
enables water to flow away from the ship, creating a smoother journey with less resistance.
So now you know, and the next time somebody asks you “how do they stay afloat?” you can
say it’s very simple really – buoyancy and displacement is the key!
Floating Cities
Royal Caribbean operate the world’s largest ships, carrying some 8,500 passengers and crew.
Keeping this many people fed, watered, entertained and accommodated is no mean feat,
especially when you consider the turnaround of the ship is completed in one day with the
disembarkation and embarkation of a further 6000+ passengers.
So now you understand how it floats, have a look at the figures from Royal Caribbean on the
opposite page and you will gain an appreciation of the organisation and colossal effort that
must go into operating a ship that’s the size of a small city!
50 tonnes of ice cubes are made every day on board.
Oasis of the Seas can cater for 6,296 guests when at full capacity, and
there are more than 2,000 staff members on board.
50,000 pieces of cutlery are kept in the main dining room, Opus – these are
used by 3,056 guests, seated at any one time at one of the 500 tables,
looked after by over 550 dining staff.
60,000 napkins are expected to be used on every voyage.
There are 93 different plant varieties on board, as well as a
horticulturalist who gives guided tours to passengers.
The ship uses more than 3,300 miles of electrical wiring – that could nearly
stretch across America, coast to coast!
Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
We have all been there, we have a nagging question we really want to know the answer to,
but we are too nervous to ask for fear of looking silly. Below are some of the frequently asked
questions on issues that we know many first-time cruisers are concerned about.
What if I miss the ship?
Ouch – this could be expensive! The adage ‘time and tide wait for no man’ springs to mind.
The ship is not going to wait – the Captain will exercise all flexibility to hold the ship wherever
he can but the pressure on berths, the fines for outstaying their welcome and the necessity to
get out into deep water mean the ship is going to sail. If you have chosen to travel
independently to the port, or even taken your own excursion, it is your responsibility to be at
the ship on time. If the flight or excursion is booked as part of your cruise by the cruise
company, it is then their responsibility to get you to your ship. If you are making your own
arrangements to the port, our advice is to travel the night before to give yourself some buffer
time in case of any travel problems.
What if I don’t like the food?
There is usually a choice of restaurants on ships and the menus are available before meal times
so you can take a look. If you are still not keen, don’t be afraid to ask. The kitchen will soon
rustle you up a plain steak, chicken, omelette or whatever you fancy. Remember, it’s your
holiday and everybody on board wants you to be happy!
Can you hear noise from the cabin next door?
Umm, to answer this as delicately as possible, the cabins have a high degree of noise
insulation. However, if you have a cabin with an internal door to the next cabin (even though
it will be locked unless travelling with the other party) these cabins can experience more
noise. Avoid the integral door cabins and you should be fine, if you are the ones making lots
of noise – remember, you may meet your fellow cruisers the next morning!
An Introduction To River Cruising
An Introduction To River Cruising
If you have cruised Europe's coastal ports you’ll have had the pleasure of spending days in
London, Athens, Lisbon and Barcelona to name but a few, but it isn’t until you pull out a map
that it dawns upon you that the ocean cruise ships, by and large, limit your potential
sightseeing options.
Many of Europe's classic cities, like Vienna, Budapest and Paris, were born of their proximity
to rivers, and their waterways are not large enough to accommodate mainstream cruise
ships. Still, they're not too small for a fleet of specially designed river ships.
As a niche of cruising, river and canal voyages are an increasingly popular option, particularly
for travellers who enjoy the comforts and variety of cruising, but want to see more of the
heartland. River and canal cruising are not limited to Europe, either. In Asia, China's Yangtze
has long been a river cruising staple, and the Mekong through Vietnam and Cambodia, is
gaining in popularity.
On board, river ships feel like smaller versions of seagoing ships. Mealtimes are a major focal
point of the day, whilst the overall experience is more laid-back than it is on ocean going
voyages. Beyond mealtimes, entertainment on board is not as sophisticated, as these ships do
not carry casinos and offer little in the way of evening entertainment, except perhaps a piano
player or a local act brought on board to perform. Also, on ships that rarely top out beyond
the 200-passenger capacity limit, you certainly won't get lost in the crowd.
Itineraries on river cruises are port-intensive. They may incorporate major cities as
cornerstones, but your experience will focus as much on the smaller towns and villages that
you come across along the way. On some trips, you may visit more than one port per day,
and an actual full day "at sea" is uncommon. The ports, not the ships, are the key attractions,
and you will certainly pack a lot of sightseeing into a week or two. This kind of travel can be
exhilarating but also exhausting. Bring comfortable shoes, and don't be embarrassed to take a
day off if you're feeling overwhelmed.
Focus On Riviera Travel
Focus On Riviera Travel
From roots that began with coach trips to Paris, Riviera Travel is now the UK's second largest
river cruise operator and the country's biggest overseas escorted tours operator. Founded 30
years ago, the family-owned company now operates nine vessels on eight European rivers: the
Danube, Elbe, Main, Moselle, Rhine, Rhone, Seine and, new for 2015, the Douro in Portugal.
We believe Riviera offers a quality product at a value-for-money price, along with service that
displays a genuine passion about the holidays they provide. It is not hard to see why they are
a firm favourite amongst our river cruising clientele.
Riviera specifically targets the UK market and most of their passengers, many of them repeat
clients who have been loyal to the company for many years, are in their 50s and from the UK,
with the occasional sprinkling of passengers from other countries. With a high crew to
passenger ratio, the vessels carry fewer passengers than other similar sized ships, which means
more public space as well as a smaller, more intimate dining experience.
In addition to the main restaurant, Riviera’s newer ships such as the William Shakespeare have
a chef's restaurant which can be reserved at no extra charge for an occasional extra special
meal. You’ll also find a plethora of amenities whilst on board, including a hairdressing salon,
sauna, gym, spa and splash pool, offering you the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind.
The true value of river cruising with Riviera
Travel shines though when you realise that
there are daily excursions included in the
price. Each ship has a cruise director and
tour manager to escort you whilst ashore
and they will help you to explore and
make the most of your time. It is like being
with trusted friends accompanying, rather
than taking you, to a destination they
really love.
Choose This Cruise Line If...
You value personal service from a
small, independent tour operator.
You’re searching for cruises in Europe
passengers.
Cruise Travel Tips
Cruise Travel Tips
Although it’s true that anyone can travel, travelling well is something of an art form. There are
so many little things that can make your travelling experience so much smoother and more
enjoyable, and even after years of experience we’re still picking up new tips and tricks along
the way. Below is a compilation of our favourite travel tips which we hope will prove useful
on your next cruise adventure!
Don’t forget to take a copy of your passport and travel insurance certificate with you.
Divide your cash and credit cards into two wallets.
Ensure you lock your house windows and set the alarm – leave a key with a trusted
neighbour.
Make sure your houseplants have been well fed and watered. A good tip is to place
an upturned drinks bottle with plant feed into the compost and at least this will drip
feed them for a few days until your return.
Ensure you have sufficient prescription medicines to cover your needs in case of
delays or unforeseen eventualities, and split them between your hand luggage and
suitcase.
Don’t forget your sunglasses, suntan lotion, cufflinks, bow tie and other items that you
just don’t use on a normal day.
Use the in-cabin safe and set the code carefully to one that you can both remember.
Check your bill carefully before disembarking and ensure that if there are any
incorrect charges they are immediately credited.
Remember an overnight holdall. On your last night, the crew will ask for your main
cases to be placed outside your cabin before retiring to bed, so you will need a small
case for last minute things. Don’t forget to keep your clothes out for the next day -
you may laugh but you wouldn’t be the first to disembark in their PJs and bathrobe!
The Cruiseco Consortium
The Cruiseco Consortium
For many of our regular cruise clients, arguably the world is getting smaller. Many will have
taken a cruise to the Fjords, Baltic, Mediterranean, Caribbean or Canaries. A fortunate few
will have enjoyed re-positioning cruises, partial or round the world cruises and even the most
exciting of all - Expedition Cruises which travel to the most remote parts of the world.
So where is the cruise market heading next you may ask? Well if you want to be a trend
setter, you might want to have a look at some of the truly inspiring and rewarding cruises
along the world’s most beautiful far-flung rivers. This is where Cruiseco comes in. We have
joined this consortium of independent travel agents to gain access to, and consequently
offer you, a wide range of deals on exclusive charters of ocean and river cruise ships. These
you see sights that will take your breath away.
Amber Reid, Sales Executive at Cruiseco, recently enjoyed a 2 week cruise along the
Mekong from Hanoi in Vietnam to Siem Reap in Cambodia. Here’s her report on the trip
of a lifetime!
Cruising The Mekong Aboard Cruiseco Adventurer
by Amber Reid, Sales Executive at Cruiseco
“Vietnam and Cambodia were the most intriguing countries to travel through, from the
landscape, to the people and of course the food. I really enjoyed the mixture of bigger cities
and smaller villages that we experienced on the Cruiseco cruise-tour.
Cruiseco Adventurer has been designed perfectly to complement the surroundings at the
same time as having a fresh and contemporary feel. The cabins are spacious with enough
room to fully unpack all of your bags and store them away for the week.
Most free time was spent up on deck, often with a cold drink in hand or lounging in the
wonderful pool, enjoying the sounds of the river, with local children running along the banks
chasing the ship waving and calling out, and the crew from local fishing boats gazing up as we
sailed by, always with a friendly smile.
The food on Cruiseco Adventurer was beautifully presented at every meal. For breakfast each
morning we enjoyed a full buffet selection with fresh pastries and fruit, a wide selection of hot
foods, and an egg station with a friendly chef who would make the most amazing omelettes!
Lunch was always fun, especially the “Action Station” where one of the chefs would cook
more traditional Asian entreés such as Pho soup and Cambodian pancakes. Dinner was a
splendid selection of Asian and Western food, all served à la carte.
Entertainment on board included delightful cultural performances and movies and
documentaries which were shown before we stopped at a few of the ports to help further
explain what we would be experiencing.
The shore excursions each day were a highlight, whether we were dodging past motorbikes
and people at the local markets with some very interesting sights and smells, or visiting the
pristine Royal Palace. We had two sets of guides – Cambodian guides in Cambodia and
Vietnamese guides in Vietnam – both had the most fantastic knowledge of everywhere we
went and added their own personal stories into their commentaries.
We finished up in Siem Reap for two very intense days visiting some of the major temples
including Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Bayon Temple, all of which are incredible - our guide
was very good at explaining why each one was significant and their history. I would definitely
suggest an extra day in Siem Reap, as two days is just not enough to explore adequately.
In summary, I would definitely do this entire cruise tour again. The highlight for me in both
Vietnam and Cambodia were the people - everyone is so happy to have you there. From my
side, I enjoyed seeing how the local people live and the tour gave me a fascinating insight into
the culture of these two amazing countries.”
doubts start to creep in - could it be true? Could that nice lady in the travel agents have got
you a better deal? It’s just not fair! Let’s try and separate the myths from the fact.
Our advice for getting the best value and enjoyment from your cruise
Dos
If you want a specific cabin, the message has to be book early! The favourites go quickly and
hardened cruise passengers know where the best cabins are situated. So do your research on
cabin position or ask Broads’ staff well in advance and we will happily advise you.
Look at past trends to give an indication of when a good deal may be imminent – usually the
best rates can be found outside the major school holiday dates – so be flexible on your date if
you can. If a deal comes through and you like the price, don’t hesitate, book and secure the
best cabin you can.
Remember a few obvious things - avoid school holidays if you want a ship with fewer children
on board or go for an adults only vessel.
Notify our staff about your dining preference at the time of booking – 1 st sitting, 2 nd or Anytime
Dining (where applicable). Remember if you go for Anytime Dining you are unlikely to be
Are You Getting The Best Deal?
served by the same waiters each night and if you like your waiter getting to know your
favourite tipple or dessert you are probably best to secure a fixed time dining option.
Do choose your ship wisely – this will be your home for the next 1-2 weeks and you need to
ensure it meets your requirements. For example, do you want a resort style ship with lavish
entertainment and facilities or do you prefer a more intimate ship with a lower key approach?
Do you want a ship that enforces a traditional formal cruise evening dress code or do you like
the idea of a relaxed, smart casual approach?
Make sure you complete all the advance cruise information registration requirements early and
print off your boarding card and luggage tags – it makes it so much easier for you at check in.
Ensure you give the cruise company your loyalty card membership number at the time of
booking. Sometimes they will trigger better benefits or special rates.
Don'ts
Don’t always go for an upgrade. In principle it sounds great, but remember that sometimes an
upgraded cabin could, for example, move you from a high deck inside to a low deck outside
and you may have preferred to stay with your original choice. Sometimes it can be too late to
revert back to your original choice.
Don’t always assume that you must book your excursion through the cruise company as there
are alternatives at often significantly lower prices – ask your Broads Consultant to advise you.
Don’t be scared to speak up. It is far better to let the cruise company know if you are not
happy with your cabin early on the cruise, giving them at least the chance to do something
about it.
Don’t over-tip – many cruise companies add a daily cruise gratuity to your cabin bill or bar bill.
By all means give an additional gratuity to your favourite staff who have worked extra hard for
you, but don’t feel obliged to continually tip. Indeed some of the ultra luxury ships make a
point of ensuring you know that fully inclusive means fully inclusive and no further tip is sought
or expected from their team. Again, the message has to be – get to know your ship in advance.
Generations of Cruising
Cruising For All The Family
Have you ever thought about taking a family holiday on board a cruise ship, or does the very
idea fill you with dread? Many people have discovered just what excellent value a cruise
holiday is, how safe it is for children and how on a cruise, each family member has the
opportunity to follow their own interests so everyone is kept occupied and happy. Critically, it
is important to ensure you are on the right ship… after all, this is going to be your home for the
next couple of weeks!
We think the following cruise lines are particularly suitable for families:
P&O Cruises
Norwegian Cruise Lines
convenient pick up point close to home and travel with other companions due to take the
same cruise. Alternatively we can offer a door to door chauffeur service which is actually an
affordable way to start your holiday in style.
Why not consider driving to your port the night before and breaking your journey overnight to
give you an easy and relaxed start to your holiday? Andrew Harrison, our Managing Director,
always uses the 4* Hampshire Court in Basingstoke which not only delivers great service, lovely
the premium rates of hotels in Southampton. You can also have a lie in on the day of
Focus On Fred.Olsen
When cruise companies talk of being a family business, they try to portray their teams pulling
together and point out that all members of staff play a vital role within the fleet. However,
when you take a closer look at Fred.Olsen you will see that they are the original family based
business, now headed up by a 5th generation Olsen family member. Remaining loyal to their
roots, Fred.Olsen’s on-board staff remain with Fred. year in year out with their own family
members following in the footsteps of their parents, so it is a true family business.
Their staff know their repeat customers and those new to Fred. are quickly absorbed into the
family which ensures that staff know their favourite tipple and any favoured desserts! It is not
uncommon when you are undecided on your choice of dessert for them to bring you both –
you have been warned! With Fred., you can be sure they will always give a kind, courteous
and welcoming service and they have infinite patience to assist those that might appreciate a
little extra help along the way.
With Fred.Olsen you can be assured that you will enjoy a smaller ship experience, excellent
entertainment (whilst being a little lower key than on the large cruise ships) and meals that are
carefully prepared with the very best ingredients. A Fred.Olsen cruise is about being part of
the family; get to know your waiters and cabin staff and we guarantee you will have a fun
cruise and every effort will be made to ensure you are pampered and well looked after
throughout your holiday. It is no wonder
that for many, Fred.Olsen is the only
cruise company they will travel with and
many passengers stay on board and book
“back to back cruises” – spending the
months of January/February in the
Caribbean on a Fred. cruise would nicely
see you through the winter at very
affordable rates!
Choose This Cruise Line If...
You are partial to British traditions
and food and especially like a proper
afternoon tea service.
You don't like cigarette smoke.
Smoking is strictly limited to outside
decks on all ships.
Norwegians Have More Fun.
Top-quality, high-energy entertainment and an emphasis on fitness facilities and programmes is
what Norwegian Cruise Line is all about. The ships effortlessly combine action, activities and a
variety of dining options in a casual, free-flowing atmosphere. Freestyle Cruising ® , as it is
known, signalled an end to rigid dining schedules and dress codes. Norwegian ships now offer
a host of flexible dining options that allow you to eat in the main dining rooms or any of a
number of à la carte and speciality restaurants at any time you want and with whom you
please.
It's your holiday, so enjoy it your way with freedom and flexibility. Every one of the beautiful
contemporary cruise ships within Norwegian’s fleet has been purpose built for Freestyle
Cruising with a world of choices on board. Whether you’re a single cruiser, holidaying with all
the family or planning a group cruise, you’ll find that the on-board experience is perfect for
you.
On its newest ships, Norwegian Cruise Line offers a number of amenities like The Haven by
and electronic restaurant reservation
systems, that are reminiscent of landbased
resorts. Another distinction is
Norwegian Cruise Lines' revolutionary
disembarkation policy, which is so relaxed
that it is more resort-like than cruise-like.
From a distance, most cruise ships look so
similar that it's often difficult to tell them
apart, but Norwegian's largest, modern
ships stand out with their distinctive use
of hull art. Each new ship is distinguished
“Everybody has a blog and it would be good for the business. Just think of all the exciting
“OK”, I said apprehensively, trying to avoid the thought of another weekly task to be added to
my growing list. So as always, I mulled it over, cogitated if you prefer, procrastinated some
would say and then decided to seize the moment and embark upon a new initiative. Suddenly
I realised I have a lot to say. So here we are, our blog has launched – it’s a chatty, interesting
An Insight Into Hong Kong & Japan
An Insight Into Hong Kong & Japan
by Spencer & Bev Lambeth-Angell, Cruise Ambassadors
“Thanks to Broads Travel who arranged our flights, transfers and cruise to the Far East.
Our trip started with a flight via Dubai to Hong Kong – a vibrant, exciting city. We made good
use of the Red bus and the Star Ferry to tour Hong Kong seeing such sights as the Man Mo
temple and Kowloon, an exciting shopping area where you find the bird, fish and ladies
market. The contrast of the British styled seaside of Stanley with the skyscrapers of Hong Kong
Island is amazing. A trip around Aberdeen harbour on a sampan demonstrates the diversity of
cultures found in Hong Kong.
We flew from Hong Kong to Tokyo, Japan and after a one night stay in Tokyo International Bay
hotel trying to work all the electronic items within our room, plus a dozen buttons operating
the toilet, we transferred to Yokohoma to board the Diamond Princess for our cruise around
Hokkaido with a visit to Korsakov, Russia. Our suite on the Diamond Princess was right at the
front of the ship which provided excellent views of our arrivals in each port. As the Diamond
Princess slipped its berth we joined ‘the breaking of the sake barrel’ in the ship’s spacious
atrium and sampled our first taste of sake. The ship also has traditional Japanese baths as part
of the Spa area which was interesting to visit.
After our first day at sea, during which a variety of events took place, we docked in Kushiro. It
was here we visited the Crane Park, Zoo and Kushiro town – all interesting places to visit,
especially the fish market where you could purchase your bowl of rice and select the widest
variety of raw seafood you had ever seen. A walk around the town showed contrasts
between Shinto temples and Christian churches with the town looking more like an American
shanty town than we had expected. The sign pointing to the tsunami emergency centre
reminded us of the dangers that this area experiences.
The trip to Korsakov began with Russian customs where passports and visas were checked by
unsmiling officials. Once off the ship we were taken to Yuzhno Sakhalinsk – a town which was
once a Siberian penal centre. The museum, based on a Japanese design, demonstrated
Hong Kong Bay
disparate comparisons between Japan and Russia who, at different periods of time had
control over this area. A replica of the trans-Siberian express still stands proud in the town
centre echoing its historical role in developing this area.
Our next two stops in Japan were to Otaru and a very wet Hakodate – this is where traditional
Japan seemed to emerge. The Herring Mansion was a beautiful Japanese style house
surrounded by a rock garden and traditional trees and plants. The interior of the house was
beautiful and constructed of traditional materials and contained period furniture and
examples of ancient calligraphy and paintings. In the town you could ride in traditional
rickshaws along the quaint streets containing souvenirs such as squid flavoured biscuits and
cakes. Hakodate was visited in heavy rain which is normal for the area. The fish market, where
you were given a rod and line to catch your own squid which was cut up for you to eat was
part of the tour which we as vegetarians decided to miss out on – there was even a little
shrine to the squid in the corner of the market.
Our last port of call was Aomiri, a modern city
surrounded on three sides by mountains. A two hour
drive took us to see the Nepeta festival museum where
massive lanterns are created and stored before they
are carried through the streets – an event which
happened the week before we arrived. We then
visited Japanese gardens before heading to the town
of Hirosaki where Hirosaki castle, an enchanting tiered
pagoda style building, surrounded by 200 year old
flowering cherry trees, stands at the centre of a walled
city illustrating every expectation for how Japan would
have been centuries ago. A wonderful experience!
Would we recommend a visit to Japan? Definitely!
Many thanks to Broads Travel for their superb
organisation in making this a memorable experience!”
Focus On Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean certainly likes to challenge what can and cannot be done on a ship. Their
new builds are truly awe inspiring in every sense. Where else can you climb a rock wall, zip
wire across Central Park, have a go at ice skating, jump on a Flo Rider (that’s surfboarding to
you and me!), play around on the dodgem cars, watch some breath-taking diving and if that’s
not enough to fill your morning – why not have a go on the latest iFly indoor sky diving?
Hopefully that will give you an idea of what a Royal Caribbean ship is all about. Effectively
nonstop fun is the order of the day and whether you are 6 or 86 years old you are going to
find something to please you on a Royal Caribbean ship.
“In the evening the ice skating shows are truly fantastic - a must see! This ship has
endless fun for all ages and is just awesome.” - Judith Bradbury
If the idea of all this action scares you, don’t worry – there are wonderfully quiet areas where
you can take some chill out time to read that novel. One thing for sure, these are ships packed
with entertainment from dawn until dusk. It is no wonder that many families will choose to
stay on board the ship when in port. A vast choice of restaurants, including the wonderful
Jonny Rockets, and delightful fine dining restaurants will ensure the most challenging of
palates is taken care of.
The newest addition to the Royal
Caribbean fleet is Anthem of the Seas. She
is set to re-define cruising, and Royal
Caribbean is proud to say she’ll be calling
Southampton home. Boasting an
incredible range of ground-breaking
features (with state-of-the-art technology,
transformative venues, and the industry’s
first ever Virtual Balcony staterooms),
she’ll transport guests all over Europe in
Which Ship Is Right For Me?
For many people, the ship is the key ingredient of their holiday, so in the grid on the opposite
page we are giving you an overview of the size of some of the most popular ships and the
maximum passenger capacity.
You can certainly see how the mass cruise market is moving. The latest ships generally tend to
be in the Extra Large category and this reflects the economies of scale that cruise companies
are realising to maximise their profits. It wasn’t so many years ago that the British favourite
Oriana would have been classed as a very large ship and yet today she is classified in the
Medium bracket.
However, don’t be fooled into believing that the bigger the ship the more space you will have.
It is worth noting that some of these extra large ships, as you would expect, carry by far the
largest number of passengers and crew. Some of the luxury ships to be found in the Small and
Medium category will actually have more available deck space per passenger than the far
larger ships.
Although some of the smaller ships offer a more intimate environment with greater personal
space per passenger, their smaller size naturally limits the quantity of activities available on
board. It’s a fine balancing act of discovering the ship that offers the best mix of facilities,
space and atmosphere that suits you best. If you would like some advice on finding your
perfect ship, speak to a Broads Travel consultant who will be more than happy to help.
Celebrity has gained a reputation for outstanding professional service and fine food served on
premium sophisticated cruise ships. Providing relaxing and luxurious experiences that help you
make the most of your precious holiday time is the number one goal of Celebrity Cruises. You
will be delighted by the beautiful spaces on board, the breath-taking destinations and the
inspiring range of on-board activities. Signature amenities include wonderfully large
staterooms with generous storage, fully equipped spas and butler service.
Although spacious accommodations in every category are a Celebrity standard,
Concierge-class, an upscale element on all of their ships, makes certain premium ocean-view
and balcony staterooms almost the equivalent of suites in terms of service. A Concierge-class
stateroom includes a plethora of extras such as chilled champagne, fresh fruit and flowers on
arrival, exclusive room service menus, evening canapés, luxury bedding, pillows and linens,
upgraded balcony furnishings, priority boarding and luggage service, and other VIP perks. At
the touch of a single telephone button, a Concierge-class desk representative is at hand to
offer you assistance. Suites are still the ultimate though, and include the services of a butler to
assist with unpacking, booking spa services and dining reservations, shining shoes and even
replacing a popped button.
Celebrity attracts an extremely diverse
passenger base, targeting baby boomers
and their families, as well as seniors and
honeymooners. In addition to the US
travellers, the cruise line also draws
passengers from Canada, Europe and
Focus On P&O Cruises
P&O Cruises is a long established favourite with British customers. The ships are wide ranging,
from smaller vessels right up to the latest superliner to be launched in 2015, Britannia.
We think it is fair to view P&O Cruises as a very reliable, long standing cruise company with a
strong sense of tradition to uphold. Their ships are varied and it is important to ensure you
choose the right ship that matches your own expectations of a cruise. For example, P&O
Cruises have their traditional fleet which includes Oriana, Oceana, Aurora and Arcadia – these
are delightful ships that sit comfortably within the mid-size category, perfect if you are not
seeking the vast behemoths of the latest superliners. On the large ship scale, P&O Cruises were
amongst the first to launch Ventura which a few years later was followed up with a near
identical ship, Azura. Oceana is very much aimed at the family market and is now positioned
for the summer months in the Mediterranean with some very attractive fly/cruise itineraries.
Look out for the latest trend of combining a few days of your holiday on land with a 7 night
cruise. Azura operates out of the UK and takes in a wide range of destinations, so there
should be something to please everyone.
One of the surprises in recent years has
been the introduction of Adonia – a truly
gorgeous small ship that ensures a high
degree of personal attention. As a smaller
ship, Adonia can get in to the more petite
ports which cannot be said for her larger
sister ships. If you prefer a more intimate
cruise in a traditional style, Adonia will
deliver a wonderful experience. For
An Introduction To Luxury Cruising
An Introduction To Luxury Cruising
As more and more passengers move from land based holidays to cruises, we are seeing a
gentle shift of some clients towards the ultimate 6 star cruise ships. These vessels are often
smaller, but will ensure that you want for nothing. From the moment you board you are
treated royally with no request being too much trouble.
Once-in-a-lifetime shore excursions. Private, in-suite dinners. Champagne and caviar at
exclusive beach parties. Butlers to make spa bookings. Innovative menus dreamed up by
celebrity chefs. Lavish accommodation featuring whirlpools, expansive balconies and multiple
levels. Sounds perfect?
Nowadays, as travellers become ever more sophisticated and expect cruise lines to offer
greater differentiation, the upscale envelope has been pushed. Lines like Seabourn, Silversea,
Oceania, Regent Seven Seas and Crystal are building new ships and tailoring them to modern
views of luxury with multiple dining venues, expansive spas and larger suites.
On luxury cruise vessels you are not constantly accosted by crew members looking to take
your photo (and charge you outrageous prices for the prints) or pushing fruity drinks in
souvenir glasses, and another advantage is that many luxury lines have increased the inclusive
nature of their fares. Thousands of dollars in on-board credit, shore excursions, beverages and
gratuities are included in the cruise base. The upshot is that you can focus on being pampered
and not on who's paying for drinks at the bar or whether or not you should indulge in another
massage. Have a look at the Regent Seven Seas marketing strap line, “You can leave your
wallet at home”, and you will see what we mean.
Luxury lines are increasingly creative with exclusive enrichment programmes that give you a
glimpse into the minds of scientists, actors and writers among others. It’s all about an
ultimately personalised cruising experience, whether it's as simple as a Windstar chef cooking
up another pot of your favourite soup or as lavish as the time Crystal Cruises' staff fulfilled a
passenger's request for a birthday party by chartering six helicopters and flying celebrants and
waiters to an Alaskan glacier for a picnic, luxury line staff try hard not to say no!
One of the world's most distinguished names in ocean travel since 1840, and part of the
Carnival Corporation which also incorporates P&O Cruises, Holland America Line and Princess
Cruises, the Cunard Line has a long history of deluxe transatlantic crossings and worldwide
cruising. Their flagships are Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2, all of which
are legendary for their comfortable accommodation, excellent cuisine and personal service.
Delightful daily events include afternoon tea and the maritime tradition of sounding the ship's
bell at noon. The line offers North Atlantic crossings and seasonal shorter cruises, including
Northern European and Mediterranean itineraries.
“Queen Elizabeth’s theatre is more intimate and has a wonderful array of balcony
boxes just like in a traditional theatre.” - Elizabeth Goodworth
Each year you can expect to find at least one of the fleet embarking upon a fantastic
circumnavigation of the world. In January 2016 the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria ships
will complete round the world voyages taking some 100+ nights, stopping in such wonderful
destinations as Dubai, India, Malaysia, Cambodia, Australia and New Zealand to name but a
few. Surprisingly, these cruises are more affordable than you might think and have an
attractive lead in price of around £11,500 per person, which initially might seem a lot but
maybe not when you consider that for many this is a once in a lifetime holiday.
If a Round the World is too long for
you then you can always take a
segment of the larger trip and either fly
out to join the ship or fly home. Some
passengers will even take the middle
section of a cruise and fly out and
back. Almost any itinerary is possible!
Renowned for extraordinary worldwide voyages aboard intimate luxury ships, Silversea
cruise lines. Their small ships were designed for those who delight in the thrill of discovery
while indulging mind and body in the most lavish surroundings imaginable, and they can show
you the world in a far more personal, meaningful way. They can glide into small, secluded
harbours not yet on the radar screen, or transport you on an expedition to some of the most
remote regions of the globe. With just a few hundred guests, the ambience is casual and
relaxing.
Renowned for culinary excellence and innovative spirit, Silversea’s luxury cruises offer a
choice of open-seating dining options throughout the fleet, as well as several speciality venues
aboard all non-expedition ships. In fact Silver Spirit has six restaurants to choose from; rather
remarkable for a ship of her size.
Silversea voyages and cruise expeditions sail to over 800 destinations on all seven continents,
more than any other cruise line, large or small. Their itineraries include many ports with late
night and overnight departures providing you with more time to experience the local colours
and cultures. Fresh visions and vistas await, to intrigue even the most experienced traveller.
Personalisation is a Silversea maxim. Their ships offer more activities than other comparably
sized luxury vessels. Take part in those that interest you, or opt instead for a good book and
any number of quiet spots to read or
snooze in the shade. Silversea’s third
Holland America has enjoyed a distinguished record of traditional cruises, world exploration
and transatlantic crossings since 1873 - all facets of its history that are reflected in the fleet's
multimillion-dollar shipboard art and antiques collections. Even the ships' names follow a
pattern set long ago: all end in the suffix “dam” and are either derived from the names of
various dams that cross Holland's rivers, important Dutch landmarks or points of the compass.
In 2015 Holland America will epitomise the ultimate in worldwide premium travel experiences,
cruising to every continent and including a programme of round trip UK cruises that provide
British guests with the perfect five-star no-fly itineraries. We believe Holland America offers
one of the best experiences in premium cruising, aboard stylish mid-sized ships adorned with
priceless art and fresh flowers. Recently awarded “Best Cruise Value” for the 21 st consecutive
year and offering exceptionally high standards of service, Holland America successfully
Our favourite highlights include a Culinary Arts Centre, featuring cookery demonstrations and
Holland America cruises are classic in design and style and with an infusion of younger adults
Seabourn was founded on the principle that dedication to personal service in elegant
demand the best. Lovingly maintained and routinely updated with new features, the original
mega-yachts of Seabourn and their new fleet mates have proved to be a smashing success
would rather do so on a ship that offers personalised and attentive service when needed.
Recognised as a leader in small-ship, luxury cruising, Seabourn delivers all the expected extras
Choosing Your Stateroom
Choosing Your Stateroom
by Andrew Harrison, Broads Travel’s Managing Director
Suite, Balcony, Outside, Inside, even Inside with a view! What a dilemma!
Choosing your cabin can be ever so stressful. Making the decision on the cruise was the easy
part, now you need to focus on your choice of cabin, stateroom or suite depending upon the
ship in question. Also, where on the ship? Which deck? High, low, aft, forward, mid-ship?
Gosh it can get confusing!
We are frequently asked for our advice on this area, so let’s have a look at some of the key
points when choosing your cabin. On page 55, you can read how I struggled to decide on my
latest cruise and ended up with a compromise which actually seemed to work rather well.
The first point to note is that on many cruise ships the pricing matrix will usually move in
categories whereby certain cabin types in specific parts of the ship will command a higher
tariff than other areas. As with most things in life, you generally get better specifications the
more you pay, but with a cruise, some luck, skill and patience can ensure your cabin is nicely
positioned whilst still availing yourself of a great price.
Let’s consider the situ of the cabin – you will note that the majority of premium cabins will be
positioned usually amidships, and on a higher deck. But if you look a little closer, you will see
that the cabins situated immediately to the left or right of this section may be reflecting a
lower price. So, by having a cabin that is one cabin removed from the higher band are you
accepting much difference? The answer really has to be no – the cabin will be identical but
just one width of a cabin further along. So that has to be the first point, getting a cabin as
close to the higher band gives you a feeling of already getting a good deal.
Wherever your cabin is positioned, give thought to the thoroughfare of other passengers
making their way through the ship. For example, is there a major corridor adjacent to your
(Continued on page 54)
Choosing Your Stateroom
(Continued from page 53)
cabin, or is there an external door that creates a draft? Nice as the breeze may be, some of
these doors can slam with a mighty thud and the vibration can be felt if you are close to that
door. Are you near where the lifts are positioned? Convenient maybe, but you will also get
passengers congregating waiting for the lift. Also watch out for crew only doors – maybe not
much passenger traffic but having crew going through the door in the middle of the night can
be a pain.
Accepting a cabin several floors below the self service restaurants can be tiresome when you
decide you want to retire to your cabin juggling two mugs of tea and that extra bit of supper!
If you have young children with you, the chances are that the Children’s Clubs are going to be
towards the rear of the ship. Having a forward cabin can be a heck of a trek - it is so much
easier when you can pop in a lift a couple of floors and be right there.
Balcony cabins that are overlooked – you might want to consider this point; some cabins on
the latest super liners can have their balconies overlooked by balcony cabins on a higher
deck. I have actually witnessed a walking stick from a higher deck falling at speed onto a
passenger’s balcony below. Thankfully the balcony was empty at the time but there is the
slight concern of anything spilt from a higher cabin landing on your balcony below.
Cabins towards the rear of the ship are generally considered to experience a little more
vibration but with modern ships this is less of a problem. Towards the front of the ship and
you will experience more movement if the seas are choppy.
A lower deck cabin towards the front of the ship and you may experience more noise as the
waves can manifest with sound through the hull of the ship as it cuts through the water.
Our best experience suggests that if you take a high deck cabin amidships, you won’t go far
wrong. Get as close to the position of the premium grade cabins and don’t hesitate to take an
inside cabin on a high deck – they are perfectly acceptable. Still not sure? Have a look at the
summary of my experience earlier this year.
54 Mere Green Road, Sutton Coldfield | Bird Street, Lichfield @BroadsTravel

Choosing Your Stateroom
Cruising with children? Here’s Andrew Harrison’s advice on choosing a cabin!
You have finally decided you want to go, but a balcony cabin is quite a stretch on the budget
and you’re trying to work out if you can really justify it. You dither and decide to reflect some
more, nervous that you might lose that cabin but at the same time agonising over whether you
will like an inside cabin on the high deck or should you take the rear facing outside cabin with a
partially restricted view?
I was faced with this dilemma for my family holiday earlier in the year – I needed
accommodation for 4 but didn’t want a 4 berth cabin. My two sons are too young to occupy a
cabin on their own so my wife and I decided that if we had two cabins we could possibly make
it work, not ideal, but worth a try. So I duly booked, cancelled, booked again and in the end
settled for one balcony cabin and one opposite inside cabin.
So in practice, how did that work for me?
I have to say it worked superbly well – we effectively just used the Inside cabin at night for going
to bed with the benefit of the additional bathroom and wardrobe space. We therefore used
the Balcony cabin during the daytime when we wanted to get away from everybody and sit on
the balcony or watch a movie until it was time to get ready for dinner.
As a little insider tip – if you do ever take 2 cabins, make sure that you allocate the cabins to the
correct family member in advance. We were constantly swapping cabin key cards as I was
registered in the Balcony but used the Inside and it did become rather confusing and tiresome
juggling the different cards.
If it is a really special cruise, why not enquire if it is possible to take a cruise ship visit – have a
look at the cabin you like but remember the ambiance of the ship will feel very different when
in its base port for embarkation and disembarkation. Some clients prefer to take a 2 night mini
cruise first, but do remember that a 2 night cruise is unlikely to give you the same feel for a ship
as a full cruise would. It has to be said that a number of mini cruises on the large ships can carry
a rather high number of Hen parties or Stag parties - you have been warned!
Intimate and cosy public spaces reflect the importance of socialising on Oceania ships. Indoor
lounges feature numerous conversation areas, and even the pool deck is a social centre. The
Patio is a shaded slice of deck adjacent to the pool and hot tubs, defined by billowing drapes
and carpeting underfoot. It is furnished with plush sofas and chairs, so is ideal for relaxation.
Boldly claiming to serve “the finest cuisine
at sea” might seem to be a bit of an
overstatement. But Oceania wouldn’t
make such an immodest assertion if not
for the tremendous contribution of the
legendary Master Chef Jacques Pépin. He
clearly inspires Oceania’s chefs to perform
feats of gastronomic wizardry, creating
cuisine which earns rave reviews from our
guests, course after delectable course.
The Oceania cruise experience is best
summed up by their strapline…
“Your World. Your Way.”
Hamburg-based Hapag-Lloyd Cruises operates two luxury ships, EUROPA and EUROPA 2, and
two expedition ships, the HANSEATIC and the BREMEN. At present the EUROPA 2 and
HANSEATIC are open to UK bookings, with the all-suite EUROPA 2 offering the largest space
per passenger ratio of any ship currently sailing. Furthermore, all cabins on the EUROPA 2 have
balconies, giving you ample space to chill out in luxury.
Each ship has a different personality and speciality. The EUROPA offers a luxury experience as
it travels around the world each year, where few, if any, itineraries are repeated. Both
HANSEATIC and BREMEN are expedition vessels with E4 ice ratings, the highest given to
passenger ships. They travel to the Arctic and Antarctic as well as other exotic regions.
The real excitement for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is the launch of its first new-build since 1999.
EUROPA 2, unveiled in May 2013, is aimed every bit as much at the ultra-luxury market as
EUROPA, but its target audience is a younger, more active traveller. Families, in particular, are
catered for with dedicated kids’ facilities that appeal to all youngsters, from toddlers to teens.
“Words don’t often fail me but when I boarded EUROPA 2 for a few days, I was
speechless! From start to finish I felt like a VIP, the crew are so attentive they saw to
my every need.” - Lorraine Johnson, Broads Travel Branch Manager (Lichfield)
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ small fleet calls at
ports on all seven continents with
itineraries as short as 7 nights and up to as
many nights as one could imagine. Some
passengers have taken up virtual residency
on the luxury liners, attracted to the
relaxed atmosphere (no black-tie dinners),
excellent food in a variety of international
dining venues and the plethora of ports of
An Introduction To Niche Cruising
An Introduction To Niche Cruising
Niche cruise lines offer some incredible experiences that are not only enriching but also
potentially life-changing, offering guests a cruise holiday with a distinct expertise and focus.
Most niche/speciality cruise lines are destination experts and provide guests with an
opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of the country that they are visiting. Cruise
lines in the speciality segment cruise to destinations like Antarctica, Hawaii, Europe, the
Mediterranean and the Greek Islands, South America, the Orient, Asia and Scandinavia. Niche
and speciality cruises which also include "soft-adventure" vacations will often feature the
following to provide their guests with an enrichment experience as well as a holiday:
Destination rich cultural itineraries
Enrichment seminars by distinguished guest experts
Naturalists, geologists or licensed guides
Regional cuisine
Continental atmosphere with multinational guests
These cruise lines emphasise destination and discovery and have a broad appeal to
experienced travellers. Niche cruises are a great value and a convenient and comfortable way
to see the world and the types of ships, accommodation and amenities vary by cruise line.
Hurtigruten cruises the Norwegian coast and sails to Spitzbergen, Greenland and Antarctica
using comfortable but slightly more pragmatic working ships, whilst the likes of Star Clippers
offer state-of-the-art tall ships offering the ultimate experience for sailors by balancing
grandeur, adventure and the tradition of sailing with luxurious accommodation and service.
These exciting cruises are becoming more popular than ever and give passengers once in a
lifetime experiences with wonderful memories.
An Adventure With Star Clippers
An Adventure With Star Clippers
by Paul Giles, Cruise Ambassador
“During the summer of 2013 my wife and I were enjoying a wonderful holiday on the Amalfi
coast when we espied anchored off-shore the superb sight of a five-masted sailing ship. We
were so struck that when we got home we decided to find out what the ship was and
whether we could try a holiday aboard. Broads immediately identified the vessel as Royal
Clipper, one of three sailing vessels operated by the Swedish company, Star Clippers, which
offers cruises both in the Mediterranean and on the other side of the Atlantic. We had never
been on a cruise before but we were sufficiently tempted to sign up for a seven night cruise
down the west coast of Italy, including Sicily, which we undertook in June 2014.
The cruise sailed south from Civitavecchia, the port of Rome, visiting Ponza in the Pontine
Islands before crossing the Bay of Naples (with Vesuvius in the background) to reach Sorrento
and then Amalfi. From there we sailed further south, passing through the Strait of Messina
between the toe of Italy and Sicily, for a further landing at the Sicilian port of Giardini Naxos
and a visit to the nearby picturesque town of Taormina. Finally, we sailed north through the
Aeolian Islands, landing on the largest of them, Lipari, and sailing by the active volcanic island
of Stromboli by night, enjoying the really spectacular sight (from a safe distance!) of its
ongoing eruption. Throughout the voyage there were superb photo opportunities and I
wished that I had a better camera!
We were very impressed by our experience on the Royal Clipper cruise. The itinerary was full
of interest with a variety of optional tours to choose from at the various ports of call. Transfer
ashore was by tender, which required a little agility, but the crew were extremely attentive to
safety and passengers of all ages managed the arrangements without undue difficulty. The
meals were very enjoyable (with an impressive attention to food hygiene) and drinks
reasonably priced. Dress style was smart casual and there was a general atmosphere of
friendly elegance.
The ship was capable of operating purely under sail power but in practice both sail and motor
propulsion were used according to the wind conditions. Adventurous passengers could help
set the sails and climb up the rigging. The ship has a small gym, plenty of sunbathing space and
there are arrangements for swimming in the sea when at anchor.
One of the things that appealed to us was the modest size of Royal Clipper in comparison with
most cruise liners. This suited us perfectly: although the ship was relatively small there was
plenty of space for the passengers (on our cruise there were fewer than 200). However, the
size of the vessel obviously limited the facilities on board and anybody with a young family
might want something with more sports facilities and entertainment.
Anyway, looking back, my wife and I think that our Royal Clipper cruise was probably the best
holiday we have ever had and we have already committed ourselves to another seven night
voyage on the same vessel in September 2015, this time starting from Venice!”
Focus On Star Clippers
In 1991, Star Clippers unveiled a new tall ship alternative to sophisticated travellers who want
to enjoy an adventure at sea but not on board a conventional cruise ship. Star Clippers vessels
are four and five-masted sailing beauties - the world's largest barkentine and full-rigged sailing
ships. Filled with modern, high-tech equipment, the ships rely on sail power while at sea unless
conditions require the assistance of the engines. Minimal heeling is achieved through judicious
control of the sails.
Visiting ports often untouched by larger cruise ships and offering you the activities, amenities
and atmosphere of a private yacht, Star Clippers is recognised as one of the premier speciality
cruise lines. You’ll enjoy the romance of sailing on board a true tall ship in a relaxed
atmosphere with high standards of service provided by an attentive crew. Each of the
beautiful ships have expansive teak decks, swimming pools, informal dining, a convivial
Tropical Bar on deck and a comfortable piano bar.
It is the unique combination of sailing tradition and pampered relaxation that is the essence of
Star Clippers. The bridge is always open and passengers are welcome to peer over the
Captain's shoulder as he plots the ship's
course. Crew members are happy to
demonstrate how to splice a line, reef a
sail, tie a proper knot or assist guests in
climbing the Crow’s Nest.
As attractive as the ships' interiors are, the
focal point of Star Clippers cruises is the
outdoors. Plan to spend a lot of time on
deck soaking in the sun, sea, and sky. It
doesn't get any better than that!
Travelling Solo
Travelling Solo
In many ways, cruising is an ideal getaway for solo travellers. Several cruise lines welcome
singles with receptions that allow them to meet other solo passengers, usually held early on in
the cruise. Some even have "gentlemen" dance hosts on board so women travelling alone
don't feel like wallflowers when the band strikes up! These dance hosts can be found on
Crystal (they'll even have female dance hosts, an industry first, come October 2014) and
Cunard. On longer Holland America voyages (40 days or more) and Silversea (10 days or
more), similar services are also offered. Seabourn makes sure all solo travellers are hosted at
dinner by the ships’ officers, staff or entertainers, or with other passengers.
Choosing a Ship and Cabin
The industry's trend towards bigger and bigger ships makes it a bit harder to meet others who
may be travelling alone. It can be more difficult to find these fellow solo passengers on ships
with thousands of cruisers, and you're not guaranteed to run into the same friendly folks you
meet on a shore excursion or at the casino later on in the cruise.
Small ships on the other hand tend to be quite social, and you'll see the same faces again and
again. Open-seating dinners, smaller excursion numbers and an emphasis on interactive
activities are conducive to meeting people and making friends. However, these ships tend to
carry an older clientele and a higher price tag, so they might not appeal to young, single
travellers.
The good news is that in recent years, the tide has been turning for solo cruisers, and some of
the newest ships out there are now accommodating those travelling alone. Norwegian
Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway have joined Norwegian Epic in adding studio cabins that
are priced for single occupancy and feature an exclusive, shared social space called the
Studio Lounge. It offers a bar, two large TV screens, hosted daily gatherings and a concierge
for booking dinner reservations and shore excursions.
Likewise, Royal Caribbean will feature 28 dedicated solo cabins aboard both its upcoming
Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, including interior studios with industry-first
64 Mere Green Road, Sutton Coldfield | Bird Street, Lichfield @BroadsTravel

Travelling Solo
"virtual balconies" (80-inch floor-to-ceiling LED screens projecting real-time ocean and port
views). Like the standard studio cabins, "super studios," with proper 55 square foot open air
balconies, will include no single supplements.
European companies have also been ahead of the game with single cabins. Saga Holidays has
them in a variety of categories: Saga Sapphire offers 44 single cabins and Saga Pearl II has 60
single units. For each ship, that's almost 25 percent of the total number of cabins.
In addition, river cruise lines tend to be very welcoming to solos. AmaWaterways' European
fleet boasts single occupancy staterooms on six of its ships (with priced-for-one rates).
The Solo Supplement
The biggest hurdle for solo cruisers is the dreaded single supplement. Because most lines don't
offer cabins for one, or because the few that exist sell out quickly, they will typically charge an
extra fee to a solo traveller who wants to reserve a double occupancy cabin without a
roommate. This surcharge can range anywhere from 10 percent of the cruise fare to 100
percent (which, in essence, means you're paying double, i.e. the same price as two people
sharing a cabin).
Shop around for the lowest supplement. Several cruise lines add 50 percent or less to the per
person rate for singles occupying a double occupancy cabin for certain cruises and cabin
categories. AmaWaterways periodically posts promotions that waive its normal 50 percent
single supplement on select itineraries. Other lines like Avalon Waterways and Uniworld also
advertise reduced or waived fares on a number of itineraries.
Tip: Since upscale lines tend to offer price breaks to solo cruisers more often than the
mainstream lines, you may find that cruising on a luxury ship with a minimal supplement is
better value than sailing on a mass market ship with a heavy supplement.
What Shall I Wear?
What Shall I Wear?
Oh dear, don’t we all just hate it when our partner utters those words? The thought of
standing out from the crowd by getting the dress code wrong is quite stressful for many
people. It used to be so simple, but now we have formal dining nights, casual nights, smart
casual and plain just smart nights - is it any wonder that we get confused? Nationalities seem
to interpret the guidelines differently; some ladies like to dress up and some gentlemen, who
wear a suit to work all year, naturally relish the opportunity to leave it at home. If that is not
enough, ships now have many restaurants and that too can influence the dress code.
In an effort to help, we have put together some simple guidelines that we hope you may find
useful.
Daytime
Normal resort wear like shorts, t-shirts, jeans, trousers and sundresses will be fine. Just
remember that you will be expected to cover up and wear suitable attire when eating in a
restaurant - so gentlemen, that means no sunburnt bare chests please!
Evening
Formal Dress Code:
Smart Casual:
Casual:
Note:
Dark suit and tie, tuxedo or even a white dinner jacket for men (don’t
forget the cufflinks!) Cocktail or evening dresses for women.
Jacket with either tie or open collared smart shirt for men.
Polo shirt and trousers for men (avoid jeans and trainers in the main
restaurant). Ladies - sundresses or trousers will be fine.
On a formal night, if you really don’t want to do the full dressing up
bit, remember many ships will have an alternative casual restaurant
where you can have your dinner in smart casual or casual attire. Just
remember that other areas of the ship may be out of bounds.
Focus On Hurtigruten
Since 1893 Hurtigruten has been a part of the coastal life of Norway and now operates daily
departures on 11 unique ships between Bergen in the south and Kirkenes on the Russian
border. When it comes to Norway, no-one knows the coastline better than Hurtigruten.
Originally a communications and travel link between the villages on Norway's western coast,
Hurtigruten provides an up-close look at the fascinatingly intricate fjords, mountains and
villages that were once isolated and difficult to navigate. The Hurtigruten itineraries are often
described as "the world's most beautiful voyages" as they provide access to some of the most
stunning scenery and the unique cultures of Norway, many of them above the Arctic Circle.
Options include 6 night northbound, 5 night southbound, or 12 night round-trip sailings,
calling at 34 ports in each one way segment. Others spend part of the year on Antarctic and
Chilean Fjord itineraries or take trips to Spitsbergen, an island midway between Norway and
the North Pole. The MS Fram also makes summer expeditions to Greenland as well as a world
cruise.
These are also working ships, transferring both cargo and passengers, but the ships have the
look and feel of traditional cruise ships. Tour leaders on board all voyages will assist you with
practical cruise planning details, but these are not traditional cruises. Hurtigruten ships
Dining, with meals included for full one
way and roundtrip passengers, takes
place in a single restaurant. Breakfast and
lunch are open seating buffets with a
great selection of tasty Norwegian and
international options. Dinners are set time,
You wish to sail past some of the most
How Safe Is Your Holiday?
How Safe Is Your Holiday?
You know how it is; you work hard all year and look forward to your 2 week break in the sun.
But just how safe is the holiday that you have committed your hard earned cash to?
In recent years, thousands of holiday makers had their holidays ruined by the demise of their
travel agent / tour operator / airline. In many cases, the Civil Aviation Authority or ABTA
stepped in and rescued the situation, but the stress and upset caused should not be
underestimated. Previous legislation had meant there was utter confusion in the market place
and many travellers were left unsure if their holiday was protected or not. Many travel
insurance policies proved to be worthless when passengers scrutinised the small print, as they
found that their policy did not cover the demise of their holiday arrangements. It is estimated
that less than 50% of holidays in 2012 were adequately covered.
Against this background, the Government set about defining a clearer and better way
forward. It was recognised by the Government, in conjunction with the CAA, that the current
ATOL scheme needed reforming to afford many holiday makers a new level of protection. That
said, there are still many components of a holiday that can remain unprotected even after the
reform. It is for this reason that it is advisable to ensure you receive the correct certification
when buying your holiday.
What should you receive?
Effective 1 Oct 2012, any consumer who books an ATOL protected holiday or flight must be
supplied with an ATOL certificate. A travel business must not take your payment if they cannot
produce the certificate, which will state who and what aspects of your holiday are covered.
Booking directly on airline websites will not afford you any cover under current legislation.
So the advice is, book through a long standing trusted travel company. Make sure you receive
the correct documentation and scrutinise your certificate to identify what is covered. Broads
Travel in Mere Green, Sutton Coldfield and Bird Street, Lichfield have held their own ATOL
license for many years. Don’t take risks with your holiday – book with us.
