Columbia Icefields, Alberta
Canada, the world’s second-biggest country,
which stretches across six time zones from
Newfoundland to the Pacific seaboard, is the
home of unequalled and unforgettable travel
experiences. Blending vibrant urban centres,
award-winning cuisine, and cultural tradition
with awe-inspiring, untouched natural
landscapes, wildlife, and the Northern Lights,
Canada is a must-visit destination in 2016.
Repeatedly lauded as one of the world’s most
liveable countries, cosmopolitan Canada is
clean, safe, friendly and multicultural, and her
cities boast exceptional restaurants, galleries
and museums, plus a jam-packed cultural
calendar of festivals and events. The annual
Calgary Stampede is unmissable; Ottawa’s
annual Winterlude attracts more people
than any other festival in the country; and
Vancouver’s annual Festival of Lights involves
a sensational fireworks extravaganza.
Toronto is a city with a rich multicultural
heritage known for its soaring futuristic
architecture, and vibrant harbour front. In
City is reminiscent of Paris, with cobbled
with diners and window boxes billowing
with flowers.
Canada’s lively and exciting cities are set
against some of the world’s most sensational
vistas, and to step out of the urban
environment is to find yourself in a land of
space – and lots of it. Endless skies, humbling
panoramas, mammoth mountains, sweeping
plains, thick forests, cobalt blue lakes
and glacial terrains define the Canadian
landscape. Home to the famed and beautiful
Rocky Mountains and more than 40 National
wonder, including the mesmerising Northern
Lights, a bucket list staple, and the mighty
cascades of the Niagara Falls, one of the
world’s great spectacles.
These breathtaking landscapes are home to
a spectacular diversity of wildlife, including
grizzly, black and polar bear, wolf, beaver,
moose, elk and caribou, and visitors to the
coast can see whales and seals in their
natural habitat.
Canada is full of tastes to savour and from
farm to table there are food movements in
the making. Exciting local blends, created by
Canada’s leading wine producers, are yours
to discover. Canada’s cities are brimming
with fine dining restaurants that attract
international attention, and local specialities
such as bison, beaver tails (ovals of deep
fried, decadent pastry), poutine, fiddleheads,
Montreal bagels and, of course, west coast
Salmon are waiting to be found and enjoyed.
Insight Vacations brings together the best
that Canada has to offer, with a choice of
tours that showcase Canada’s undulating
landscapes, historic towns, and thriving
most renowned and beautiful long-distance
journeys in the world. From the vibrant city
of Vancouver, set out for the chic Alpine
playgrounds of Whistler, Banff and Jasper.
Meet a genuine Royal Canadian Mounted
Elk Island National Park, Alberta
Policeman in iconic uniform, who will regale
you with personal stories and inform of the
history and traditions of the RCMP. Step
out onto glacial ice formed thousands of
years ago, and take in the grandeur of the
Cruise Ship: Holland America ms Nieuw
Amsterdam Cruise (7 nights).
Day 15 to 20 – Cruising the Inside
Passage. The ms Nieuw Amsterdam
is designed for Alaskan cruising with its airy
lounges, teak decks and roomy verandahs,
allowing for comfortable observation of the
ever-changing panorama and vast
wilderness that stretches from British
Columbia to Skagway, Alaska. Slowly glide
past a maze of bays, glacier-carved fjords
and waterways protected from the open
sea by islands and other land masses.
Juneau is a place to let your imagination
run wild. Stop in rustic shops offering jade
sculptures, silver jewellery, and apparel
designed by native Alaskans. Perhaps
take an optional guided tour of the State
Capitol or climb aboard the Mount Roberts
Tramway? And no need to hurry, daylight
here lasts well into the evening. As a
trading post for prospectors headed to the
Klondike Gold Rush, Skagway was once
known as ‘hell on earth,’ – an untamed,
violent town controlled by organised
criminals. Today, of course, the town is a
bit more civilised, though its colourful past
is carefully preserved in the Klondike Gold
Rush National Historic Park. In the watery
wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park,
behold a landscape at its literal moment
of creation. In this isolated land, the shrill
noises of modern life are replaced with the
deep, thunderous boom of building-sized
icebergs calving into the sea from a vast
river of ice. Call in at Ketchikan, salmon
capital of the world. Part of the town is built
along a steep hillside; part is built on pilings
over the water where bald eagles watch
from waterside perches. While cruising, a
full breakfast (FB), lunch (L) and dinner (D) is
served on-board each day. (FB,L,D)
INSIGHT VACATIONS
LUXURY GOLD JOURNEYS
A luxury blend of transport showcasing Canada’s idyllic landscapes, as you embark on one of the
most renowned long distance journeys in the world. From the vibrant city of Vancouver, via grandeur
of the majestic Rocky Mountains, through the western Prairies and lakes of Northern Ontario to
cosmopolitan Toronto.
Niagara Falls
The Canadian
VIA Rail is the national passenger rail
network of Canada, and with over
12,500km of track stretching from coast
to coast and as far north as Hudson Bay,
it is the perfect way to explore Canada at
a more relaxed pace.
‘The Canadian’ is VIA Rail’s most famous
route and runs between Toronto and
Vancouver all year round. Taking four nights
to complete its epic journey if you do it in its
entirety, it is truly a ‘must do’ journey.
For this tour you will join the train in Jasper,
in the beautiful Jasper National Park and
surrounded by the magnificent Rocky
Mountains. You will then spend three
relaxing nights on-board the train
experiencing the varied scenery Canada
has to offer. As you leave the mountains
behind you cross the prairies which stretch as
far as the eye can see, passing grain elevators
and small communities by day and on clear
nights the beautiful star filled skies, especially
good from the observation dome cars. On
your last day on-board the landscape will
change to tranquil lakes and boreal forests
before arriving into the cosmopolitan city of
Toronto the next morning.
When travelling in Sleeper Plus Class the
most popular choice of accommodation is
a cabin for one or for two (as used in this
tour), which by day is a private sitting room
to enjoy the view from, and by night is turned
into a private cosy bedroom. Each cabin
also includes a private WC and washbasin,
comfy beds and a large picture window.
When on-board the train you can not only
spend time in your own private cabin but can
also enjoy the use of the public areas,
including observation domes. Whilst on
‘The Canadian’, you can meet your fellow
passengers including the ‘locals’ in the
various lounges on board, enjoy a glass of
wine in the bar, or enjoy an organised talk
or watch a movie. You may also be lucky
and be able to spend time listening to
the musicians that sometimes perform
on board.
And you won’t go hungry. Delicious meals
are included and prepared by the on board
products. Locals adore good food, just as
they adore gathering around a restaurant
table with family or friends. To savour the
true taste of Québec, sample a glass of ice
wine or ice cider, enjoy a slice of farmstead
INSIGHT VACATIONS
LUXURY GOLD JOURNEYS
Southern
Grace
This jukebox journey takes you from the home of Country music , Blues, and Rock ‘n’ Roll to the
multicultural melting pot of New Orleans – peppered throughout with the flavours of the South.
Jazz Musician, New Orleans
French Quarter, New Orleans
There is a spirit in New Orleans today. Lush
and tropical, graced with elegance tinged
with just a hint of an aging patina, this city
remains an authentic destination, a place
like no other.
Walking through the cobblestone streets of
the French Quarter or the shady lanes of the
Garden District, you might feel for a moment
as though you’ve stepped into the past.
Intricate wrought iron balconies, glowing gas
lamps, the notes of a jazz solo curling out into
the street from an open doorway – indeed,
New Orleans has kept in close touch with its
long and rich history. This most unique place
owes its very identity to its centuries
of cultural heritage, a mix of European,
Caribbean and African cultures and customs
that resulted in music, food, literature, artistry
and celebrations unlike any the world had
ever seen before.
The most celebrated and historic core of the
city is thriving. The French Quarter, with its
hidden courtyards, grand hotels and historic
architecture, is a delight around every corner.
Some of the best tax-free shopping can be
found in the heart of the city along Royal and
Chartres Streets in boutiques, art galleries
and antique shops.
Dine in some of the world’s oldest and
best-known restaurants, including Galatoire’s,
Arnaud’s, Antoine’s and Brennan’s, or dine on
New Orleans
beignets and café au lait at the famous Café
Du Monde on Jackson Square. View artists
at work around the gates of the Square, and
step into historic St. Louis Cathedral, an icon
of New Orleans. Soak up the city’s history at
the Historic New Orleans Collection and the
Hermann-Grima House.
The French Quarter is all about taking it
easy. Kick back to jazz at Preservation Hall, or
catch an outdoor concert along the French
Market. Or simply sit along the river at the
Moonwalk and listen to the simple sounds
of a clarinet or the music of a steamboat
calliope.
Nearby, the Faubourg Marigny’s funky nightlife
beckons the music lover all week long.
Frenchmen Street’s music club scene offers
the sounds of sweet jazz every night of the
week at venues such as Snug Harbor, and
unique dining at neighbourhood restaurants.
New Orleans is a feast for the soul. Come
and see for yourself. For more information on
with a visit to Houmas House Plantation,
once the country’s largest sugar producer.
