New York, New York
Alex Guofeng Cao came to New York
searching for his pursuit and came upon
photography, which quickly became his
passion. Inspired by such masters as Irving
Penn, Richard Avedon, Edward Weston,
and Robert Mapplethorpe, Cao ceaselessly
studied and experimented with all methods
and techniques in photography. While
adept with color, Cao’s preferred medium
is the black and white image. Cao’s deep
fascination with the subtle gradations of
tone between the deep black and the stark
white are the generators for all the colors
he needs to create his world.
Jaehyo Lee works in natural materials and steel,
as his primary media. His most spectacular
works, like the Alphabet Tower on display at
the Mandarin Oriental, incorporate highly
burnished, bent steel nails that form complex,
articulated patterns against the velvet black
of charred wood. This astoundingly difficult
process results in works of a sinuous, elegant
line and intricate detail—some of which are
wall-based or floor-based and some of which
are objects intended for use as functional
art. He continues this inquiry in his wood
sculptures: wooden spheres and conical pillars
that are often monumental in scale.
Makoto Fujimura is a leading contemporary
Nihonga artist with paintings included in the
collections of every major museum in Japan,
and he received a museum retrospective in
Tokyo before he was forty. Born in the United
States but with deep roots in both Western
and Asian art, he spent his early years in
Japan and retuned as a postgraduate on
a Japanese governmental scholarship
to study Nihonga at the famed Tokyo
University of Fine Art. Due to graduating
with his MFA as the 1st in his class he was
offered an apprenticeship with the master
painter Kayama to pursue his doctoral
studies (awarded 1992) under Kayama’s
tutelage. Encouraged by Kayama’s open
mindedness and encouragement, Fujimura
was able to experiment with the Nihonga
tradition, achieving a synthesis between
his outsider point of view and classical
Japanese painting. With a particular affinity
Since winning the UBS Art Award
from London’s White Chapel Gallery
in 2000, Kouzaki’s work has been
exhibited internationally. He is included
in the Fukushima Museum, the Koriyama
Museum, and the Futyu Museum in Japan.
Using traditional Nihonga materials (ground
mineral pigments with gold and silver leaf)
as the medium, Kouzaki experiments with
the addition of foil molds, adding a new level
of innovation to this centuries old technique.
He has received numerous awards and
critical recognition for his innovative
approach to the Nihonga movement.
Kouzaki utilizes many compositional
devices, combining parts of animals and
plants to create his unique vision.
The artist sees this concept of
combination as indispensable to advances
in science and industry, and by artistically
depicting ourselves transformed into bizarre
characters, helps to create a loss of selfidentity.
Strange creatures, from frolicking
birds and animals to the rearrangement
of DNA, are presented alongside various
objects of advanced technology.
Li Chen is one of the most exciting and
accomplished of the new generation of
sculptors in Asia. His life and work are guided
by his deep commitment to Buddhism. His
powerfully modeled bronze figures contain
references to classical Chinese sculpture but
use contemporary concepts of modeling to
express the realities of the modern world.
His works have won numerous awards,
and the beauty and spiritual depth of his
sculptures have found favor with individual
and institutional collectors as well as with
Buddhist practitioners. Indebted to Buddhist
imagery of the Tang and Song dynasties,
Li’s works use the past as a springboard
for developing his own highly individual
expression, which relies on minimizing detail
and ornamentation for simplicity of form.
His work was recently featured in a solo
exhibition held in conjunction with the 52nd
Venice Biennale.
Nancy Hoffman Gallery
New York, New York
Born in Changchun, China, Hung Liu
grew up in Beijing during the time of Mao
Zedong. As a young adult, she worked
with peasant farmers in the countryside,
growing rice, wheat and corn. During this
time, she photographed local farmers
with their families and made drawings
of them. She has always delved into
social, political and historical aspects of
China’s past regimes as “subject” for her
works, using old photographs as source
material. The artist has never shied away
from the social, political or philosophical
implications of China’s past regimes.
With her bi-cultural experience, she is in
a position to re-present and re-examine
Chinese culture, past and present,
while combining images from her own
life. In her new multi-layer resin and
paint pieces, which the artist calls “Za
Zhongs,” Chinese for bastard paintings,
Liu conveys the courage and strength of
women, a theme that echoes throughout
her work. Hung Liu invented this new
approach to making works approximately
seven years ago, creating a revolutionary
visual language.
Born in 1961 in xinjiang, China, Feng lives
and works in Beijing, China and Boston,
MA. Qin Feng’s expressive compositions
serve as meditations on time and motion.
His bold brushstrokes lyrically combine
the gestural impulses of action painting
with the tradition of Chinese calligraphy
painting and the artist often playfully
pairs the traditional medium of ink with
alternative materials such as coffee, tea
and oil paint. Qin’s interest in balancing the
dynamic between positive and negative
space within his compositions mirrors his
interest in exploring the delicate harmony
between humans and nature.
Yue Minjun was born in 1962 in the town
of Daqing in the province of Hei Long
Jiang, China. He was a college instructor
before moving to Beijing in 1991 to
devote himself to painting. His signature
male figure (a parodic self-portrait) has a
large pink head with closed eyes, cropped
hair, and an open mouth with twice as
many teeth as normal. The eyes on the
figure are closed to keep out the ugliness
and violence of the world around him;
the laughter of his figures (whether singly
or in groups) is a satire of standardization
and mass production, a refusal to take
things too seriously, a repudiation of
the Cultural Revolution’s sameness and
seriousness, a gleeful enjoyment of new
liberties. The artist’s work is illustrated
on the cover of the book “New China
in Ordos, China and has been living
in Frankfurt since 2006. He attended
the Hochschule der Bildenen K¸nste
in Braunschweig with Prof. John M.
Armleder.
The contemplative stance that all but
forces itself on the observer is evoked
to begin with by the sheer extent of
his expressive color landscapes, which
appear to extend beyond the bounds
of their large-format canvases. Massive
ranges of mountains, endless sand flats
and bottemless chasms, gaunt free
formations, shoreless expanses of water
and ice seem to spread out endlessly and
timelessly.
By superimposing form and content,
inverting the classical pictorial genre
toward a thoroughgoing subjectification,
and charging the whole metaphorically,
Nashunbatu endows his pictures with
a universal effective potency, so that
while they are bound by time they
simultaneously outlast it.
Nashunbatu’s work has recently been
exhibited in two solo shows at the Ordos
Art Museum in China and at IMNU&IMU
in Hohhot, China.
Feng Shui Master and artist Kwan Lau
uses natural pigment in a tedious process
lasting up to 16 hours a day, with thousands
of brushstrokes layered heavily on canvas.
The artist incorporates a meditative
consciousness to create the sacred mandala,
a Sanskrit word meaning ‘circle’. According to
David Fontana, its symbolic nature can help
one “to access progressively deeper levels
of the unconscious, ultimately assisting the
meditator to experience a mystical sense of
oneness with the ultimate unity from which
the cosmos in all its manifold forms arises.
Kwan Lau primarily exhibited in galleries
during the 1960’s-90’s. He befriended Robert
Basquiat and many other NYC artists.
The Brooklyn Museum requested Kwan
Lau’s expertise in Feng Shui to review the
