<strong>MARKET</strong> <strong>REPORT</strong> – <strong>WEEK</strong> <strong>47</strong><br />

BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS <strong>WEEK</strong> ENDED FRIDAY 23 rd November 2012.<br />

The dry freight market had a moderately good week with only the Capes basically standing still<br />

(actually -2.6% w-o-w) whilst the other 3 BDI sectors all improved. The most significant improver was<br />

the BPI by about +14% (about $1000 per day on t/c), whilst the BSI and BHSI each gained about<br />

+7% and +6% respectively. Overall this added up to a +5% increase on the BDI.<br />

With the dry freight market being relatively stable over the past few weeks and most parties resigned<br />

to the fact that though it is likely to still decline a bit more in the short to medium term, it won't fall<br />

too much more. We are seeing more cash buyers deciding that now is as good a time as any to buy if<br />

they can secure the right vessel for the right price. In some instances the level of buying interest is<br />

causing small value anomalies such as the '87 built panamax that reportedly just sold for $300,000<br />

more than a very similar '89 built unit done in the same week. Resales of more modern tonnage we<br />

are also seeing the odd value anomaly but here it is often due to 'sweetheart' sales by mortgagees,<br />

including favourable finance for the buyer (who is often an pre-existing client).<br />

As predicted the demolition markets are starting to reach saturation point again, especially in India<br />

where there is now a significant backlog of already purchased vessels to be beached and in the<br />

meantime even more vessels are being offered for scrap sale. The hope is that Bangladesh, which itself<br />

was found oversupplied recently, can again start to soak up some tonnage along with China which has<br />

been fairly active of late. Either way one must anticipate that such excess supply (of ships for<br />

demolition) will likely cause offer levels to fall. Meantime sellers should be wary of 'overly optimistic'<br />

prices on offer from some cash buyers.<br />
