<strong>MARKET</strong> <strong>REPORT</strong> – <strong>WEEK</strong> <strong>21</strong><br />
BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS <strong>WEEK</strong> ENDED FRIDAY 24 th May 2013.<br />
The BDI overall showed a fairly meaningless -2% decline last week and that was basically caused by<br />
the BPI posting a small decline of about -8% w-o-w. The other 3 indices all basically flat lined via<br />
inconsequential individual movements of less than +/- 2% each. Basically the freight market<br />
continues to just run along at what we believe to be 'bottom of the market' rates.<br />
The trend of the second hand S+P market is ongoing with buying demand (especially from Greece)<br />
outstripping supply of 90's -2000's built quality vessels for sale, causing prices to continue to be<br />
squeezed up in small increments.<br />
It is the newbuildings market that continues to be the most active sector, with even the so called<br />
second string Chinese yards now starting to fill available berths. We understand almost the same<br />
number of vessels (somewhere in the 430's) have been ordered in the first third of 2013 as in the<br />
same period of 2012, with the most popular being the larger vessels such as VLCC and Capes.<br />
According to our records 77 capes plus options are contracted to date along with 60 containers (plus<br />
options) of xs 8.000TEU capacity. Not to miss out however, MR interest has remained strong with<br />
around 60 (plus options) units being contracted so far.<br />
As more newbuildings berths get booked we anticipate the yards may soon start to increase prices,<br />
away for the current below cost or breakeven levels.<br />
The demolition sector saw a definite trend reversal take place in the sub-continent last week where<br />
rates that had been up around the $440-460's and even 470's retreat to the low $400's only. India was<br />
the main (negative) mover due to currency depreciation and a decline in local steel prices but Pakistan<br />
and Bangladesh also remain pensive due to their pending budget announcements in early June. The<br />
China recycling market remains quiet and weak at $330-340 levels and Turkey prices have now<br />
dropped below the $300 mark.<br />
