<strong>Westgate</strong> is a French Immersion/Spanish Bilingual<br />
K – 6 Elementary school <strong>of</strong> 619 students. Located in the<br />
southwest community <strong>of</strong> <strong>Westgate</strong>, it is the designated<br />
French Immersion school for students from west<br />
<strong>of</strong> Crowchild Trail and North <strong>of</strong> the Glenmore Reservoir<br />
including the communities <strong>of</strong> Sunalta, Scarboro,<br />
Richmond/Knob Hill and North Glenmore Park. In addition, it<br />
is the designated Spanish Bilingual school for all <strong>of</strong> Area IV.<br />
<strong>Westgate</strong> has supportive and involved parents, an active<br />
<strong>School</strong> Council and a fundraising Parent Society.<br />
Programs<br />
• French Immersion - Kindergarten to Grade 6<br />

• Dynamic Music program taught by a certified music<br />
specialist<br />
• Quality Phys. Ed. Program, with a variety <strong>of</strong> outdoor and<br />
community experiences as part <strong>of</strong> the daily Phys. Ed<br />
programming<br />
• Extensive library collection in French, English and<br />
Spanish<br />
• Technology used by students include: classroom computers,<br />
mobile lab/media cart; 11 Smartboards, ipod touches and<br />
digital/flip cameras.<br />
• Resource teacher/Literacy support<br />
• Artist in Residence programs; Cultural Presentations<br />
• Monthly Learning Assemblies involving all students<br />
• Weekly Choir and Mad Science programs are available at<br />
lunchtime for grades 1-6 students.<br />
<strong>School</strong> Council Involvement<br />
There are many involved and supportive parents at <strong>Westgate</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong>. Many parents volunteer both in the school and on trips.<br />
Parents run many programs including: Stampede breakfasts,<br />
special lunches, choir, mad science, penny carnival and the end<br />
<strong>of</strong> year farewell celebrations.<br />

• On the Provincial Achievement Tests in grade 3 French Language<br />
Arts 91.7% 2011 (82.9% 2010) achieved the acceptable standard<br />
and 37.5% in 2011 (12.9% 2010) achieved the standard <strong>of</strong><br />
excellence.<br />
• In grade 3 English Language Arts 95.9% 2011 (85.6% 2010)<br />
achieved the acceptable standard and 27.5% in 2011 (21% 2010)<br />
achieved the standard <strong>of</strong> excellence.<br />
In grade 3 French Language Arts 91.7% 2011 (84.1% in 2010)<br />
achieved in the acceptable standard and 37.5% (16.8% in 2010)<br />
achieved the standard <strong>of</strong> excellence.<br />
• In grade 3 Math (combined F & E) 92.5% 2011 (85% 2010)<br />
achieved the acceptable standard and 43.8% 2011 (25%2010)<br />
achieved the standard <strong>of</strong> excellence.<br />
• On the Provincial Achievement Tests in grade 6 French Language<br />
Arts 100% in 2011 (94.2% 2010) achieved the acceptable<br />
standard and 27.0 in 2011 (11.5% 2010) achieved the standard <strong>of</strong><br />
excellence.<br />
• In grade 6 English Language Arts 100.0% in 2011 (98.1% 2010)<br />
achieved the acceptable standard and 27.0 in 2011 (17.3%2010)<br />
achieved the standard <strong>of</strong> excellence.<br />
• In grade 6 Math 94.6% in 2011 (92.3% in 2010) achieved the<br />
acceptable standard and 24.3% 2011 (13.5% in 2010) achieved the<br />
standard <strong>of</strong> excellence.<br />
Targets 2011-2012*<br />
If we develop teacher capacity to facilitate comprehension instruction<br />
with a focus on vocabulary acquisition in the target language THEN<br />
teachers will instruct, and assess student’s comprehension skills in<br />
synthesizing and inferring <strong>of</strong> reading material across the curriculum<br />
THEN student achievement will improve.<br />

Instructional Supplies & Materials Fee (ISM)<br />
Instructional Supplies & Materials Fee are <strong>Board</strong>-mandated fees and are set by the<br />
<strong>Calgary</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>. In 2010-2011, the rates were $15.00 for Kindergarten<br />
students and $30.00 for Grades 1-6 students. The CBE provides funding for<br />
students whose fees are waived because <strong>of</strong> financial difficulty, and for other unpaid<br />
ISMs.<br />

Noon Supervision Service<br />
The <strong>Calgary</strong> <strong>Board</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> set a maximum Noon Supervision fee <strong>of</strong> $28.00<br />
per month ($280.00 per year). In addition to the monthly fee, schools may charge<br />
and Optional Incidental Fees to <strong>of</strong>fset the costs <strong>of</strong> supervision cost and supplies<br />
(Food for children without an occasional lunch, games, activities, etc.)<br />
Noon supervision Fees are Elective Fees, in that if you do not use the service you<br />
do not have to pay the fee. However, if you access Noon Supervision for your<br />
student, these become mandatory fees.<br />
