The 2011 academic year is
well underway and already so much
has happened on our campus. We
extend a warm welcome to the new
Reddam House families who joined
us this year, and a „welcome back‟
to our „old‟ families! Our school is in
its 9 th year- next year we will turn
10!
- Last week you received a
summary of the IEB Matric results
of The Class of 2010. We
congratulate the students again on
their outstanding results! It is
exciting to hear of their future plans,
both here and overseas. We wish
them well for happy and successful
futures.
- We welcome these new teachers
to our School:
- Mrs Petro Farrell- Gr 4
- Mrs Sharon Fenner- SP
Afrikaans (welcome back, Sharon!)
- Mrs Roma Hodgson- College
Computer Ed
- The Bonding Camps took place
during the first week back for Gr 5
to Gr 11. Students and staff
returned feeling connected and
ready to start serious work. We
thank the staff for giving up their
time and taking good care of our
students.
- The Matric Class of 2011
remained at School and have
commenced their academic
programme in earnest. We rounded
the first week off with a „braai‟
lunch. It was a pleasure to be with
the students, and thank you to the
staff that assisted.
- The Gr 4s have taken to the
Intermediate/ SP Phase with
confidence and maturity and were
rewarded with a day at the ice-rink!
Thank you, Ms Breakspear and Ms
Farrell!
- The SP/ Intermediate Phase and
College held successful Teacher-
Parent Evenings this week. We
appreciate your presence and
involvement in your child‟s
education. All information pertinent
to the term and year ahead was
shared, and important parentteacher
introductions and dialogue
took place. You have teacher email
addresses for future
communication.
- The College Senior Executive
was inducted at a symbolic and
celebratory ceremony on Thursday.
Already the Matrics have
established themselves as mature,
insightful and reasonable leaders.
We wish Jessica, Nic, Lawrence,
Gia, Londiwe, Mikail, Issy, Siseko,
Roald along with all the Matrics a
good year ahead. The Matrics
hosted a Gr 8 „Welcome to College‟
Braai- great fun was had and our
new Gr 8s are now considered part
of the family!
- The Junior Executive was
inducted on Friday. They too
enjoyed a special ceremony along
with their proud parents. Our Gr 7s
of 2011 have many plans up their
sleeves to make this year great.
The Gr 7s elected these pupils as
their Senators: Jesse de Jong,
Fathima Janoo, Zachary
Lamprecht, Kamo Legote, Isabella
Sinn, Daniela de Siena, Katie
Fisher and Daniel Raubenheimer.
We are most proud of all the Gr 7
pupils and wish them well for the
year ahead.
- Daniel Wulfsohn (Gr 12) took it
upon himself to participate in the
StartNow project during the vac
which raised over R30 000 for The
Sunflower Foundation. Well done,
Daniel!
- Londiwe Khoza (Gr 12), along
with a group of RH-ASB students
organised a Christmas Party for the
children of Maitlands Cottage
Home. They arranged refreshments
and gifts for the children- an
admirable deed indeed! Well done
to you all.
- Ms Jenny Cerff (SP Sports Head)
won the WP Tennis Sen
Championships. Congratulations,
Jenny!
- Our Sport and Cultural
programmes have commenced.
We expect ALL students to
participate. There is so much on
offer, and the benefits endless.
Please encourage your child to do
as much as possible- get value out
of all that is on offer.
- College Staff will attend IEB
National Subject conferences this
weekend. These meetings keep
staff up to date with new
developments in their subjects. All
Western Cape IEB Schools‟ Heads
Welcome back! Your pupils
have already been so busy!
An Orientation Day Bonding
Camp, Senator Induction
Assembly, preparations for
the Athletics meetings to
come and most important of
all, settling into the new
academic year! We have
been back for only two
weeks and so many
structures have already
been put into place for
another exciting educational
year at Reddam House
Atlantic Seaboard!
We thank you, as parents,
for attending the first of our
termly TPL meetings. We
welcome Petro Farrell to our
teaching team and we
welcome Sharon Fenner
back. Both are experienced
teachers, with a deep love
for children. We know they
will be welcomed by all and
be happy to be part of our
Reddam House family.
We congratulate our newly
appointed Junior Executive.
We are extremely proud of
these Grade Seven pupils as
we watch them accept their
new responsibilities and
execute their duties in a
mature manner.
Our pupils have begun this
year, enthusiastic, energetic
and filled with expectation!
They are already in the
swing of the daily academic
programme. The camps are
a memory of bonding with
teachers and making new
friends. The Grade Seven
pupils are responsible about
their role as leaders of the
school. The Grade Fives are
familiarising themselves
with the responsibilities that
come with the movement
between venues and
meeting the expectations of
different teachers. The
Grade Fours are learning
about a new, very different
and exciting academic
programme. The first of the
series of cycle tests have
been written and results are
being assessed.
Sports practices are running
smoothly and we appreciate
your co-operation in
punctually collecting your
child from school after
practices. All bags are safely
kept in classrooms of the
accompanying teacher, so
as to avoid items being
accidentally left on busses
or at different venues.
The Cultural Programme will
give the pupils further
choices of activities
available after school hours.
Pupils commit themselves to
an extra-mural for the
season. We encourage
pupils to participate in one
sport and one cultural
choice each term.
Art Club (Gr 5, 6 and 7)
Because of popular
demand, Art Club will be on
a Wednesday afternoon
from 14:30 till 15:30.
Art Club will not be on a
Monday afternoon as is
recorded on the extra-mural
programme.
We apologise for any
inconvenience because of
this change.
We encourage punctuality
for all school events and we
would appreciate your
support in this regard. Pupils
write Cycle Tests at 08:00
on a Friday morning, so it is
advisable to have your child
at school at least ten
minutes before the start of a
school day. Cycle tests
missed on a Friday are
written from 08:00 in Mr
Johnston’s venue on the
following Monday.
Parents are reminded that
anything brought to school
during the school day must
be left at reception with
Linda or Anne at the upper
campus. The items will be
passed on to your child.
Please do not take things to
the classrooms or lockers.
Parents are asked to please
fe el fr ee t o make
appointments via Linda at
reception to meet with
teachers to discuss their
children. Please do not
approach teachers just
before school, just after
school or during the school
day, unless an appointment
has been arranged.
You are more than welcome to
email teachers. We need to
draw your attention to the incorrect
email addresses of
Petro Farrell and Gill Molteno
in the Parent Information Booklets
distributed at the TPL on
Tuesday evening. We apologise
for any inconvenience as a
result of this.
Discipline that Works – at Home & in the Classroom
Children of all ages and stages of development need to know where the boundaries and limits are. Parents and
teachers need to set the rules clearly, fairly and calmly – and consistently. When children know what the rules
are – especially the non-negotiable ones – they may test the limits, but will very quickly learn important lessons
when they experience the consequences of the choices they make. This workshop will give you tools and
coping strategies to become a more effective, appropriate disciplinarian for children in the 21 st Century.
Dates: Tuesday 8 March & Tuesday 15 March
Time: 1900-2100
Sessions: 2
Cost for the two-session workshop: R120
Building Self-Esteem in your Child
How to raise confident, resilient, assertive children. There is no doubt that the way we view ourselves, and the
ability to accept our strengths and our weaknesses – and to work at managing our temperaments positively, will
assist greatly with our adult lives. Adults act as very important “ mirrors ” to children – the way a child sees
him/herself reflected in these adult mirrors will have an enormous impact on feelings of self-worth. Guidelines,
skills and strategies will be discussed.
Date: Tuesday 22 March
Time: 1900-2100
Sessions: 1
Cost of the workshop: R60

‘When we dream alone it is only a dream, but when many dream together it is the
beginning of a new reality.’ This a quote of Friedrich Hundertwasser, Painter,
architect, ecologist.
For us as teachers teaching is a richly rewarding and fulfilling experience, because
the imagination of the child knows no bounds. By enriching, stimulating, motivating
and guiding pupils, they learn to see more, to sense more and to be aware.
Consequently they are able to express themselves confidently as they move from
one learning stage to another, fulfilling their dreams.
We wish pupils and parents and enjoyable and rewarding Term One 2011 at
On Friday 21 January the
they sank in the dam. We all had
Grade 6 Camp to The Kogelberg
Reserve
The Grade Sixes along with
teachers Marc Bennie and
Kim McNamara, broke all
records on camp this year
when they did a 10km hike
into the beautiful Kogelberg
Biosphere, where they boldly
leapt from cliffs into
“rooibos-tea” water. Some
successfully confronted their
fears and all stretched their
boundaries, even if it was
just eating something they
never normally eat – like
brown bread. There was
laughter and singing as
friendships reconnected and
we all connected with nature
– frogs, flowers, lizards,
locusts, sunsets, full moon
and more. We all had a wonderful
time.
Grade 7 Camp to Bonamanzi
The Grade Sevens, Ms Sivitilli and Mr
Johnston spent an energy filled 3 days on
the Breede River at picturesque Bonamanzi,
where we bonded with old and new
friends. The children enjoyed learning
about each other’s strengths and weaknesses
through various games. The second
day was spent river rafting against a strong
wind and many exhausted children and
some teachers were happy to reach the
shore to swim and have a well deserved
lunch. Evenings were spent braaing, relaxing,
talking and cooking potjies. The camp
experience was well worth the time spent
at Bonamanzi.
Senior Primary
All School sports commenced
this week with
great enthusiasm. It was
wonderful to see so
many children at all the
different sports.
We would like to reinforce
the important
points that were in last
weeks newsletter.
Please ensure that you
have the sports clothing
items that you need for
summer sports and ensure
that all items, including
equipment,
are marked.
All sports, excepting
swimming & surfing, can
all be done in PE
clothes.
Cricket:
U/11 –Tuesdays and
Wednesdays (match
day)
U/13 - Tuesdays and
Thursdays (match day)
If there is no match on
the match day or your
child has not been selected
for the match,
practice will still take
place. Letters will be
handed out to those
pupils playing in the
match.
Tennis:
No child will be allowed
onto a tennis court in
their school shoes,
barefoot or without a
hat. Our policy is ‘NO
HAT NO PLAY’. They
must have lace up takkies
(no slip on shoes or
black soles). Tennis on
Wednesdays are only
for the children selected
to play in the match.
Letters will be handed
out to those pupils playing
in the match.
Surfing
The venue for surfing
can vary from week to
week, depending on the
weather conditions. Mr
Bennie will inform Lee,
at reception, where they
are going on the day,
before they leave. Most
of the time they will be
going to the Lagoon
mouth in Milnerton.
Swimming:
A Reddam swimming
cap & costume is compulsory
for swimming,
as this is for the safety
of the children in a public
swimming pool.
Please ensure that your
child has sunscreen, a
hat/cap and water bottle
for all Physical Education
lessons, sport practices
and matches.
We would also like you,
to help us, impress on
the children, that the
honour of playing a
match for their school
team, in any sport,
should far outweigh doing
any activity out of
school. If they wish to
obtain colours for a
sport, they must attend
85 - 90% of matches
and practices and not let
their team down, even if
it means self sacrifice.
Excellence, good
sportsmanship and
team work is what we
strive for. To achieve
this, all practices MUST
be attended. If for some
or other reason your
child cannot attend a
practice, please write a
letter to the teacher concerned,
giving a reason.
This letter must be given
to the teacher concerned
at the beginning
of the day. The letter
may be written in the
diary or an email may
be sent.
SUMMER SPORTS
AWARDS will be
awarded at the end of
this term. Your participation
in Term 4 2010 &
Term 1 2011 will be
taken into account for
these awards. If you are
new to this phase
(Grade 4’s) or are new
to the school, Term 1’s
participation on its own
will be taken into account.
All our athletes have
been running and jumping
out against each
other with great enthusiasm.
The athletes that make
the squad will be expected
to attend athletics
practice just for the
weeks prior to the Meeting,
starting next week,
as follows:-.
Tuesday & Thursday
mornings from 07:30 –
08:00 - all sprinters
and those in the relay
teams.
Friday afternoons
13:30 – 14:30 - long
distance runners, long
jump and shot put
The athletic team will be
announced shortly.
Once everything is finalised,
letters will be sent
out informing those athletes
and parents, in
what events they will be
participating .
Only the Athletic Team
has to attend on the day
but ALL SPECTATORS
are welcome!
their first match of the
season did well to win a
tight match played in
windy conditions by one
game. Well done to Michael
Viana, Lloyd
Wood, David Sher and
Jason Setton.
SPORTING ACHIEVE-
MENTS OUTSIDE of
SCHOOL
This week special congratulations
go to:-
Lloyd Wood – Lloyd
has been very busy
competing in many tennis
tournaments in the
holidays. He, together
with Johnny Sparks
qualified for the Junior
Development masters
(only 8 players are selected).
Lloyd did excellently
to win the tournament.
He then participated
in the Key Health
National Tournament in
PE. This was against
the best U/11 players in
the country. Although he
didn’t win he gained
very valuable experience.
In January he
competed in the Western
Province Summer
Tournament at Rondebosch,
where he and his
partner did excellently to
reach the finals and
come second. Currently
he is ranked 51 in his
age group in the country.
WELL DONE!!
“All of the great achievers of the past have
been visionary figures; they were men and
women who projected into the future. They
thought of what could be, rather than what
already was, and then they moved
themselves into action, to bring these things
into fruition. ”
