The Olympic Games 2012
“Citius, Altius, Fortius”
“Faster, Higher, Stronger”
It is 64 years since Great Britain hosted the Olympic Games.
In 1948 they were labelled the ‘Austerity Games’ due to the fact that
Britain was still recovering from the Second World War and food
rationing was still in force – at least we don’t have the rationing now!
The statistics for the 2012 games are mind-blowing…….8.8
million tickets covering 670 sessions, 26 sports, 39 disciplines at 34
competition venues over 19 days.
The theme for the opening ceremony at the Olympic
Stadium, Stratford on 27 th July has been a closely guarded secret;
let’s hope Danny Boyle does Great Britain proud.
Like them or loathe them, the Games are an historic event
and the eyes of the world will be upon us. It is a phenomenal task to
organise and manage. Regretfully, for those who do not like sport
there is no escape. No matter where you go in the world for
nineteen days starting from 27 th July the Games will be there.
On previous occasions the Games have been used as a
stage by various factions to make political or ideological statements.
Let’s hope this year the Games are free from interruption and allow
the world’s greatest athletes to perform to the best of their ability
and entertain all of us.
Bacton Craft Exhibition
I would like to thank everyone in the village who loaned items for the
Jubilee Craft Exhibition in Bacton Church.
We had an amazing variety of exhibits – about 120 in all and visitors to
the show were impressed and very complimentary. What a talented
group of people we have around here. Sadly only one gentleman
submitted anything, so if we could arrange another exhibition in say two
years’ time, you have plenty of advance warning!
If you are interested in sharing your hobbies with others, or need
encouragement to finish those UFOs (unfinished objects) whatever the
technique, how about getting together to form a self-help craft group
There will always be someone who can get you started or sort you out!
Bacton Parish Council Report
At the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council held on the 21 May
Cllr Howlett and Cllr Gooderham were re-appointed as Chairman and Vice
Chairman respectively.
Cllr Gooderham passed on the thanks of the residents of Cow Green for
the bench which has been installed by the pond, Cllr Gooderham thanked
the parish council for dedicating the bench to him in recognition of his
service as Chairman.
Cllr Jeffries reported that at the recent meeting of the Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee Committee there had been outstanding support from village
organisations and that everything was now coming together for what was
planned to be a very special two days of celebrations and included a
Variety Show, lighting the Beacon which is one of the 4,200 beacons
registered and listed in a book which will be presented to the Queen, a
firework display and then a Garden Party in the grounds of The Manor.
The parish council was very pleased to support the Bowls Club’s
application to obtain a grant to help fund the extensive green reparation
work that must be carried out in the coming autumn as it is seen as a
valued organisation within the parish which brings a great deal of pleasure
to many.
It was reported that the footpath in Elm Way had been repaired. County
Councillor Stringer reported that the part night lighting system has now
been activated in the Bacton area so that the lights were turned off on the
Wheatlands Estate from midnight until 5.30 am. He confirmed that each
lamp could be individually controlled and suggested that residents have a
time of adjustment and then feedback any responses to him. The parish
council supported the planning application relating to Broadlands, Broad
Road, Bacton for a first floor extension.
The parish council met again on 28 May 2012 when it supported the
planning application for an extension to The Cottage, Cow Green, Bacton.
The Annual Parish Meeting was also held on 28 May 2012 and was
attended by many of the village organisations who gave reports on their
achievements over the past year. This village has much to celebrate with
Bacton Jubilee Celebrations
My husband and I attended all of the Jubilee Celebrations and would just
like to say a very big thank you to all of those people who made it
possible. We know that these events do not ‘just happen’.
The Showtime was excellent and suited all age groups. The children in
the audience and those who took part were very well behaved. The
beacon lighting and fireworks were also excellent and the floodlighting of
the Manor was a sight not to be missed.
The afternoon tea at the Manor was I am sure enjoyed by all. What a
lovely community spirit there was. – Rita Bonnet
Cotton Diamond Jubilee Celebrations 2012
The two marquees, bar and food tents are up along with the bunting and
flags, just the seating and gazebos to position then go to bed and pray
please, oh please don’t rain.
Monday 4 th June
It’s windy but the forecast is No Rain. The playing field and the hall are
buzzing with helpers, mowers are cutting the grass, cakes arrive, mikes
and amplifiers are tested, suddenly the wind picks up and we lose two
gazebos and as quick as it starts the wind stops, reposition guy ropes, we
are ready.
Three pm and the field is packed as Helen Fraser our official guest of
honour arrives in a vintage Jaguar. She congratulates the village for its
magnificent turnout and set to in choosing a winner in the two age groups
for the royal themed fancy dress. A very proud, upright soldier and a
delightful princess win the lower age group. Henry the eighth and one of
his wives take the older group prize.
On with the races, marshalled with great aplomb by Peter & Katy. Bronze,
silver and gold medals are won all afternoon as the many different races
take place. Those who are less energetic make their way to the hall where
free cream teas are given out by Ann and Barbara’s band of helpers. More
kettles are sought as the two urns can’t keep up with the demand for tea.
Cake and scones disappear as soon as they are put on display. Gill
Nichols entertains the hall with popular songs in her ‘Old Time Music Hall’
style. Children are turning into Union Jack tigers and many other guises as
Lauren and Shelly paint faces all afternoon.
The hog has been on since twelve and now the lamb is lit. The smells of
both drift away on the wind while the beer tent with Karen, Sophie and Jo
is working flat out.
After all the races are finished, the band arrives and sets up, while the 16
and under commemorative medals are handed out.
The evening gets under way with the band playing a selection of numbers
from the sixties onwards. The hog and lamb are prodded and poked and
declared ready to eat. The queue forms and slowly moves forward, the
spit roasts are sliced and handed out by Curtis and Max. Both spits have
now finished and all have been fed
Its cold by now but the dancing has started and along with Sarah and
Alice’s spicy curry we keep warm. We do not know how many people
attended the day but a conservative estimate of 250 to 300 attended in the
afternoon and 300 plus in the evening. As the last revellers walk home at
twelve we reflect on a day fit for a queen
We would like to thank the following: - all those who helped erect and
dismantle the arena, the helpers on the day, all who gave us the funding
to put on the party, organisations and individuals for the loan of
equipment, and the intrepid band of individuals who formed the Jubilee
Committee for the planning and the organising of a Diamond Jubilee Day
to remember.
Bacton & Wyverstone Horticultural Society
The weather kept dry but windy for the visit to the Old Vicarage, East
Ruston. The recent plant sale realised £280 but expenses have still to be
paid.
There will be an evening visit to Valley Farm Barn at Combs Ford on July,
10 th meeting at the Village Hall at 6.45pm. There will be a collection for
Cancer Research. Chairman, Diane Gladders, will try to book a 33 seater
coach for Pensthorpe and Norfolk Lavender on 15 th , September, cost
approx. £22-£25. Daffodil bulbs dug up at the village hall were free to
members.
A team made up from Sheila Brown, Richard Brown, Peter Churchyard
and Diane Gladders will attend the Village Hall Quiz. Village Hall
Chairman, Keith Parsons, said the musical groups at the Jubilee Garden
Party had been a success and he had been asked to organise some for
Bacton Fayre. Suggestions are welcome. June Spreckley and Bryan
Symonds agreed to act as stewards at Bacton Fayre. Brian Symonds has
Antirrhinums for the Members Class at Bacton Fayre and he will also
supply the pots. Bryan said that the four big planted pots used for the
Jubilee Garden Party will be used for the Flower Show and some
members agreed to look after them.
Isobel Last said she had positive feedback from her advertising at the
Garden Party and had brought along a new member. Sheila Brown said
that £18 had been made on her stall at the Plant Sale for the William
Brown Trust.
Diane introduced the speaker, Peter Fisk, who spoke on how to show
vegetables and dahlias and ran through the Bacton Show Schedule
generously giving away lots of tips he had learned over 51 years of
showing. A damp cloth and a bucket of water featured strongly. Diane
thanked the speaker for encouraging us to enter if only for one class.
THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS IN BACTON
On the evening of 4 June the celebrations in Bacton began. The Variety
Show at the Middle School set the scene for the start of two very special
days where everyone in the village had the opportunity to come together
and make history in Bacton as the country celebrated the Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee.
Cllr Paul Howlett welcomed everyone to the variety show, where
professional entertainers, Charlie, Oli Day and Chris North brought show
time to Bacton and wowed the audience with their tremendous skills of
illusion and their magic and mirth. The Variety show audience was joined
by many others from the village on the meadow opposite the Manor for the
lighting of the beacon. We estimate about 500 people attended this event,
a tremendous turnout at 10 o’clock at night! The beacon was one of 4,200
others being lit that night that were registered in a book which will be
presented to the Queen. At precisely 10.15 pm the designated time, the
beacon was lit by the Beacon Master (Cllr Paul Wigglesworth) and with
the enormous full moon rising to the left of the beacon two orange glows lit
the sky. The fireworks by Bacton’s own Thunder Burst that followed defy
description as they danced in time with the music – a truly wonderful finale
to the first day of celebrations. As people turned to leave they walked
towards the Manor which was floodlit and the whole building took on a
wonderful blue hue!
The next day saw some glimpses of sunshine and thankfully no rain. At
the Manor the flags and bunting had just the right amount of breeze to
show them at their best, the marquee and side shows were set up around
the lawn and the Garden Party opened with the Stowmarket Brass Band
playing the National Anthem and the Union Flag being raised. Cllr Paul
Howlett welcomed everyone to the event and Cllr John Gooderham
helped us all look back over the last 60 years in Bacton. A lovely afternoon
followed with villagers of all ages joining in the activities and enjoying the
delicious refreshments. Jubilee coins were presented, the Royal Crowns
competition was judged as was the Fancy Dress Competition of Kings and
Queens. Enthusiastic competitors joined in especially Royal themed
children’s races. A wonderful craft exhibition took place in the church and
a photographic display of past celebrations and village events helped
some reminisce. A dance group also from the village performed a routine.
IN MEMORY OF TERRY SPALDING
No one knew what a chore it was to edit the parish magazine until the new
editors took over from Terry Spalding. Terry had carried out the task,
apparently effortlessly, for 15 years. Terry did not believe in making a fuss,
but his contribution to village life was enormous.
Terry came from a Lowestoft fishing family and spent most of his career
teaching meteorology. He ended up as chief weather forecaster at
Heathrow Airport. When he and his wife Hazel retired to Bacton, as
planned, in 1996, he immediately engaged with village life. Terry played
an active role on the Parochial Church Council, Deanery Synod, Village
Hall Committee, Over 60s, the Local History Society and more recently
helped to set up the Bacton Good Neighbours Scheme. His devotion to
the parish magazine was such that he planned holidays to avoid clashing
with the deadlines. Without people like Terry, villages would have no
community life.
Terry’s death occurred at a time when he seemed to be recovering from
major spinal surgery. A great patriot, he had enjoyed watching the
Jubilee celebrations at the Paddock House nursing home in Eye, in the
company of his family. He died at Paddock House on June 6, aged 75.
Faith was an important part of Terry’s life and he attended both St. Mary’s
in Mendlesham and St. Mary’s in Bacton. Services were held for him in
both churches.
Continued from page 29.
In addition to the music played by the brass band, youngsters living in
Bacton who attend the middle school sang and played their music too.
The afternoon concluded with the National Anthem being played and the
Union Flag being lowered.
Cllr Philip Jeffries had the idea to celebrate the Jubilee and took the lead
in organising all the events, which Cllr Bernard Gant promoted within the
village.
The Parish Council would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to
make the two days such a tremendous success
From the Rectory
Dear All
I was absolutely shattered to be rung up, that Wednesday when
everyone went back to work after the Queen’s Jubilee Weekend,
and told that Terry Spalding had died suddenly in his sleep.
I had no idea, when I took Communion to Terry in Paddock House
on the Saturday, that it was the last time we would share the Holy
Mystery together. Terry was on great form – we watched the Jubilee
Derby on his bedroom TV, prayed, and after Communion he talked
about all his plans for when he came home. Although the operation
to relieve the trapped nerves in his spine had given him a bit more
mobility, he seemed to realise that he probably wouldn’t be able to
get around much, but he was keen to take his turn at manning the
Bacton & District Good Neighbour Scheme phone. He had also
started making notes for writing down some of his memories –
which would have made fascinating reading. On Tuesday he had a
lovely day with the family around him. He and Hazel watched the
Jubilee Service in St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Hazel says that when
the Archbishop gave the blessing at the end, Terry signed himself
with the cross as if he had been in church. He was a bit sleepy, but
very much himself. Then, somewhere between 4.30 the next
morning, when the night staff checked on him and he was sleeping
peacefully, and 6.30 when they took in his morning cuppa, Terry left
us. He had lived sixteen years in Bacton and through editing the
Parish News, organising coach trips, working with the Village Hall
Committee, putting up the new bus timetables each time they
changed, and all the other innumerable ways in which he served the
community, had made himself very much a part of the life of this
village. Our sympathy is with Hazel and all the family as they learn
to manage without his lively presence. May he rest in peace and
rise in glory.
Yours with love,
Liz Varley
LIGHTING THE WAY
8,000 miles, 70 days: what an incredible journey the Olympic Flame is having on
its journey around Britain and Ireland on the way to London! Huge crowds have
been turning out to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay. They have been lining the
roads and streets not just to see the torch and be a part of history but to welcome
and encourage the many incredible people who’ve been selected to carry the
flame in short stages. You see them shaking their hands and cheering them on,
encouraging them every step of the way.
The whole thing has been great fun with all the different places the Flame has
visited and unusual modes of transport that have carried it. There have been
celebrities among the torchbearers but the majority have been nominated in their
own communities for extraordinary courage in the face of disability or illness, for
generosity with time and talents in fundraising or promoting sport or for caring for
others. There’s an amazing range of ages and the nomination stories are very
moving.
The news is so often gloomy: bad news and full of people doing terrible things.
What a contrast to hear of so much goodness and kindness in our country today.
It lifts us up when we see and hear how the human spirit can rise above adversity
and overcome obstacles to show true nobility of soul. The crowds cheered wildly
in Royal Wootton Bassett as 16 year old Ben Fox carried the torch so bravely with
only one leg and the help of his crutch. This is truly Olympic. All these Olympians
are an inspiration.
Dear Editor
We would like to thank your readers and those who attended our
Open Garden Day for the contribution made to making the day a
success. We had 167 visitors and raised £637.50 for the National
Garden Scheme charities (www.ngs.org.uk). The weather was
kind to us and many lingered to partake of tea and cakes in the
garden. It was good to meet so many people interested in
gardening and to receive so much positive feedback.
Thank you all for your support.
Junior Church
St Swithin’s Day
St Swithin was a Saxon Bishop of Winchester; he was born in the
ancient kingdom of Wessex and was educated in its capital city
Winchester, which was at the time a very powerful city. He was
known for being a very holy, kind and generous man giving many
charitable gifts and building churches.
We probably all know the legend of St. Swithin’s Day.
St Swithin’s Day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St. Swithin’s Day if thou be fair
For forty days ‘twill rain no more
The legend say’s that as Swithin lay dying, he asked to be buried
outside where he would be rained on and for nine years his wishes
were carried out, but then the monks of Winchester tried to move his
remains to a splendid new shrine inside the cathedral on 15 th July
971, according to the legend there was a heavy storm during the
ceremony and this has led to the old wives’ tale that if it rains on St.
Swithin’s Day it will rain for forty days afterwards or a fine day will be
followed by forty fine days.
The Met Office has tested this theory on several occasions and of
course it is nothing but a myth.
Just Gardening
The weather has been very poor this year. The day after a hose pipe ban
was introduced it seemed to start raining and doesn't appear to have
stopped since. Along with the wet period we've had some low night time
temperatures. Young tender plants could have suffered as a result.
However, there is a good supply of bedding plants available in the Garden
Nurseries for your borders.
Try planting out hanging baskets, fill them with plenty of plants and locate
them in strategic places throughout the garden. A colourful flowering
basket hanging from an apple tree or other structure will draw your eye to
another level in the garden and give interest.
One or two tips to be considered: firstly, don't put the baskets in a position
where you can walk into them and bang your head when thinking about
other matters relating to your garden, secondly, position them for easy
access and allow for watering. I use a fine rose on my watering can.
Hanging baskets will need watering every day and twice a day in the hot
weather, if it ever arrives. I water my hanging baskets early morning and
late evening. Any other time the water tends to run off and evaporate not
doing any good for the plants. Also there is a chance of scorching the
leaves. Once the hanging baskets become established they will need a
good feeding. There are limited nutrients available for the plants, in the
basket planting medium, so we have to provide it.
Try a variety of Pelargonium, or Fuchsia in the centre of the basket. Then
plant multi-coloured Verbena around the centre plant and hanging over
the edge of the basket plant trailing dark blue Lobelia and white alyssum.
You can also plant through the moss lining of the basket, ensuring the
plant roots are in the basket soil and this will give you a complete covering
of flower and colour. Don't let your baskets dry out and don't forget to feed
them. If these simple rules are followed you will be amazed with the
success you will have and your hanging baskets will be a talking point.
Happy Gardening.
