Mandate<br />
The mandate of the PH/<strong>DT</strong> <strong>group</strong> comprises development, construction,<br />
operation and maintenance of particle detectors for the experiments at<br />
<strong>CERN</strong>.<br />
– The <strong>group</strong> clusters common services and infrastructu<strong>re</strong> which a<strong>re</strong> at the benefice<br />
of all experiments at <strong>CERN</strong>, i.e. gas system support, thin film lab, silicon facility<br />
with bond lab, irradiation facilities, instrumentation and controls, experimental<br />
magnet maintenance and operation, magnetic field calculations and<br />
measu<strong>re</strong>ments.<br />
The <strong>group</strong>’s activities a<strong>re</strong> concentrated in four a<strong>re</strong>as:<br />
– Completion and consolidation of the ongoing LHC projects;<br />
– Maintenance and operation: piquet services, shutdown and p<strong>re</strong>ventive<br />
maintenance, <strong>re</strong>pairs and infrastructu<strong>re</strong> support;<br />
– New detector projects: participation in new developments (LHC upgrade);<br />
– R&D: participation in common R&D activities in strategic fields; participation in<br />
experiment’s R&D.<br />
– We estimate that p<strong>re</strong>sently and in the near futu<strong>re</strong> about 60-80% of the <strong>re</strong>sources<br />
a<strong>re</strong> allocated to the LHC activities of the first two items. In the years after 2009<br />
we expect a gradual inc<strong>re</strong>ase of the project and R&D work.<br />
