The group ENG-TC is responsible for planning, coordinating all maintenance and
installation activities in the CERN Accelerator complex, providing support to the
experiments using the CERN accelerators during their preparation, integration,
installation and operation, and for the design installation and maintenance of the
secondary beam zones.

• It has been agreed that a memorandum will be written to
specify the expectations of the Research Sector for the
Accelerator Sector support (and vice-versa).

The 3 DG scientific advisors
• 3 scientific advisors will be asked to explore

Safety Commission
• A special meeting took place on Wednesday
19 th where the current Safety Organization (and
its difficulties) was presented to the DG elect.
• It has already been decided to keep RP as a
single group inside SC and to empower again
SAPOCO.

Communication
• The DG elect has expressed his strong wish to
strongly improve internal communication
• HR is working on “code of conduct”
– Will include conditions of use for CERN image and
blogs

Research Sector: Scientific Computing
• No changes compared to IT, with 2 exceptions
– IT/CO (industrial controls) → EN/TC
– AIS (EDH etc..) → GS

Research Sector : PH Department
• Essentially no change in the structure (we had our
restructuration during last 15 months !)
• Only two deputies
• One for EP unit
• One for TH unit
– The third deputy attributions will be spread on a number of PH
staff members (devoting a fraction of their time for the Dep t
administration)
• Computing (on & off) matters (including recruitment)
• Technology Transfer Officer
• Cat 1 matters (research fellows, LD recruitment)
• CLIC/ILC project
• [non-LHC program]
– A “management board” meeting regularly will include the DH,
DDH and DPO and the responsible of the above “projects” (part
or full attendance)

Projects
• Two projects will be defined across sectors, and
therefore in PH
– SLHC
– CLIC/ILC
• While the short term aim of the CLIC/ILC in PH is rather
clear to me (The CLIC project foresees a Conceptual Design
Report by about 2010. This will include a CLIC detector concept with
a demonstration of its physics performance), the organization of
an SLHC project across PH (beyond the present WP
R&D) remains to be understood.
• The good point is that it has been agreed that both
projects should be included in the future MTP.
• New non-LHC initiatives should also be included.

Budget
• 2009 is not going to be an easy year
– Large LHC debt reimbursement
– New facts
• LHC repair (20 MCHF)
• CVI (3.68%) will probably be only partially granted
• Help of collaboration funds may be useful to
“bridge” and maximize our recruitment
possibilities

PH : additional thoughts
• I intend to visit in the coming months the various
groups and try to understand their most
important concerns, in particular in terms of
resources
• There are a number of domains I’d like to revisit
to see with you whether we can bring
improvement
– Seminars and their (poor) attendance
– Internal PH communication (Web site, Newsletters,
faculty meetings)
Would like that we all feel part of the same “ensemble”
