CBE Mission "Educating Tomorrow's Citizens Today"
Vision
The Calgary Board of Education is the dynamic learning community of choice. We
provide quality learning opportunities and options. Our learners take ownership by discovering
and developing their potential, passions and gifts. They take their place as lifelong learners and
make a significant contribution within a complex, changing world.
Values
Students come first. We believe that everyone can learn. Each student is unique and
worthwhile. We acknowledge, recognize and celebrate the diversity of our learners. Success for
each and every student is the goal of our work.
Learning is our central purpose. We believe that learning empowers students to achieve
their potential. Attention to continuous improvement, high expectations, innovation and
relationships will enable all students to reach their potential. Student learning is at the heart of
everyone's work at the Calgary Board of Education.
Public education serves the common good. Public education is essential for a vibrant
democracy. The principles of democracy drive our accountability to the public and the public's
participation in our work. Our school system is owned by and accountable to Calgarians and
therefore, the Calgary Board of Education is accountable to Calgary taxpayers for using
resources wisely to meet students' learning needs.
Parent Involvement
Volunteers
The Calgary Board of education recognizes the value and encourages the use of volunteers in
the schools. There are many meaningful and enjoyable ways that you can serve in our school.
In order to ensure the safety of students, all volunteers in our school need to be registered and
obtain a SECURITY CLEARANCE. Background checks must be completed for all adults who
wish to volunteer for a field trip or with-in the classroom. Security clearances are valid for
five years from date of issue. You can apply and once cleared, are able to volunteer at any
school with-in the CBE. If you don‘t have your Police Clearance, do not wait until your child has
a field trip or something you would like to attend. It can take several weeks to process your
Police Clearance. If your Police Clearance has not been processed you will not be able to
participate in the event.
Please attend one of our volunteer orientation sessions at the beginning of the school year.
This year we will offer the following dates and times for parents to attend a Parent Volunteer
Orientation & complete a Police Clearance application at Louis Riel School.
Tuesday, September 11 @ 11:45 am —library
Tuesday, November 6 @ 3:25 pm —library
Thursday, September 13 @ 3:25 pm —library
Thursday, November 8 @ 3:25 pm —library
Come and join us on one of those dates to become a Louis Riel School Parent Volunteer. Please
bring 2 types of government issued ID with you. We are looking forward to adding you to our
long list of parent volunteers!
For safety reasons, when volunteering we ask that all adults sign in at the office first
and wear a VOLUNTEER tag at all times.
Classroom Messages and Interruptions
Teachers have asked that we do not interrupt instructional time with messages for students.
The classroom is a learning environment. When interruptions occur, students are often
distracted and taken off task. All communication with students must filter through the office
first. This includes such things as messages, forgotten lunches, homework, pickup and end of
day arrangements. Please check in with the office when picking up students for appointments
and staff will call the classroom.
School Calendar and Newsletters
Louis Riel strives to find ways to communicate with parents and students
in the most environmentally friendly way. A school calendar and newsletter
is created each month and posted on the school website
http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b625/. This is the most up to date and accurate
information regarding what is happening at Louis Riel and helps keep
paper out of the landfills.
In September, each student will also be given a CBE user ID to access an online program called
D2L. This is a site that is updated by the classroom teacher as to the weekly events within the
classroom.
