** Lunch Lady Dates **
Mar. 4, 6, 11, 13 & 18
Since we only have two reporting periods this year (January and June), we
felt it was still important to touch base with parents in March to discuss
student progress and student goals since we last met in January.
Therefore, parent teacher conferences will take place on March 20 th and 21 st
without report cards. This is also a good time to discuss how parents and
teachers can best support student learning and growth as we head in to the
last few months of the school year. Conference information will be provided
closer to the end of March.
Student safety is always a priority for us. In order to do so, we all need to
work together and remember that convenience doesn’t also mean safety. A
few quick reminders about best practice:
If you drive your child to school, please use the marked crosswalk to
walk across Holmwood Avenue. DO NOT walk between parked
school busses and do not let your child cross the street by
themselves.
If you come to school to drop something off to your child or to

Sincerely,
volunteer you MUST sign in at the office first and wear a visitor/
volunteer pass. We need to know who is in the building at all times.
If your child will be away or late, please call the school so that we
know. We need to know where students are at all times.
If you pick up your child early or pick up your child when they usually
take the bus, please sign them out at the office so that we know they
are with you.
Milk Cards
As we are trying to promote healthy choices in the lunchroom, we are
continuing the milk program at Highwood School. This means that
students can buy milk cards at the office for $10 (good for 12 milks). Milk
cards from last year will still be accepted. Students can choose from white
milk or sugar reduced chocolate milk. Milk cards are the responsibility of the
students and lost cards will not be replaced.
CAMPBELL’S LABELS FOR EDUCATION
Help Highwood School redeem free stuff! Highwood School is now
registered with the Campbell Soup’s Labels for Education campaign. This
campaign asks families to save Campbell Soup product labels/ UPC codes
and donate them to the school. The school will then collect them and
redeem them for free prizes for the school such as gym equipment, musical
instruments, DVD’s, books, etc.
Eligible products include:
- All Campbell Soup products (i.e. Chunky Soup; Condensed Soup;
Gardennay; Healthy Request Bowls)
- Campbell Soup broths, Easy Cooking Sauce, PREGO Pasta Sauce
- PACE Salsa; GOLDFISH crackers
- All V8 Beverages
Changed your contact and personal information
It is very important that the school has the most up to date contact
information for each student in case of an emergency. If you have changed
your home, work, or cell phone number since September and have not
notified the school of this change, please do so immediately so that our
computer system can be updated. The same goes for any of your
emergency contacts that you may have listed (i.e. grandparents, friends,
relatives).
We also understand that sometimes legal custody arrangements between
separated parents exist and change. The school must have copies of any
legal custody agreements between parents in order for them to be enforced
at the school. They also must be the most recent. Otherwise, both parents
have legal custody of the child and therefore have access to them and
information regarding the child.
Paperless Agendas and D2L
D2L (Desire 2 Learn) is an online system that CBE students and teachers
use to support student learning. In an effort to conserve paper, we are
using paperless agendas this year, and all agenda items will be posted on
D2L. For students who were at Highwood School last year, logging in to
D2L will be the same as before. For new students, we will provide you with
instructions in the coming days. It is an expectation that parents along with
their child to check D2L on a daily basis for agenda messages as well as for
on-line learning supports.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews will be taking place on Thursday, March 20 th from
4:00 pm -8:00 pm and Friday, March 21 st from 8:00 am – 2:30 pm. Once
again we will be doing the on-line booking system that will become available
on Monday, March 17th at 8:00 am. The link to on-line booking will be
posted on Highwood School’s website
There will be NO SCHOOL FOR ALL STUDENTS ON March 21 st .
VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: FAIRNESS
Fairness:
Treating other people the way you wold like to be treated; giving
everyone the kinds of rights and chances you have.
How Can You be Fair
There are many ways you can work to be fair. You can share and take turns. You can
decide not to be jealous of somebody else. You can show respect for people even if
they’re different from you. You can find a good way to act when someone isn’t fair to you.
What If
Here are some situations for you to think about, write about, talk about, or act out.
1. Your brother Alex wants to take ballet lessons. Your other brother and a friend tell
Alex that dancing is “sissy stuff.” Is that fair Why or why not What might happen to
Alex if he takes ballet lessons anyway What might happen if he doesn’t What
would you do or say in this situation
2. Your mom promises to take you and your friend to an amusement park for your
birthday. You can’t wait to go on the roller coaster and all kinds of other fun rides. But
on your birthday, you wake up and see dark clouds in the sky. It looks like it’s going to
be a rainy day. Your mom says, “I think we should save the amusement park for
another day. It won’t be fun if it rains.” You cry, “That’s not faaaaiiir! You promised!”
Is your mom being unfair Why or why not Is there something you and your mom
could do to help make things fair for everybody What
3. Your neighborhood has mostly black people and white people, and you get along fine.
A new kid named Kuri moves in. Kuri’s Japanese. You notice that some of your
friends ignore Kuri or make fun of her. You want to help, but you’re afraid they may
make fun of you, too. How might you help make things more fair for Kuri and your
friends What might happen if you do that
“I know, up on top you are seeing great sights. But down at the bottom we, too, should
have some rights.” (Dr. Seuss)
“America is … like a quilt … many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven and held
together by a common thread.” (Jesse Jackson)
In Social Studies, the Grade 2's have been learning about Inuit, Acadian and Prairie art and music.
We were so fortunate and excited to go to the National Music Center to learn more! When we were
there, we learned how to do throat-singing with each other, paddled to a French song, did some
Acadian dancing and played the spoons, and even participated in some good old cowboy culture
and did some country singing! We had a blast while we were there!
