CONGREGATIONAL CARE
Stephen Ministers Know ~ HOLIDAYS CAN BE DIFFICULT
When our lives are touched with loss, whether it’s due to the death of a loved one, job loss, divorce or other
circumstances, celebrating the holidays may seem impossible or at least very difficult. Thanksgiving and
Christmas are just around the corner. If you are grieving a loss, try adopting some of the following suggestions.
SUGGESTIONS FOR COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS
aAsk God for strength and peace.
aDevelop a plan for the holidays. Be aware that the stress may affect you emotionally, cognitively and physically.
aLet others know what you need and want. People often want to be helpful, but they can’t read your mind.
Help them be supportive.
aDon’t try to please everyone. Just say “no” if you don’t want to do something.
aLet go of the “shoulds” like Christmas cards. Be aware of expectations you place on yourself and let go of those
things that could be difficult for you.
aAdapt cherished traditions rather than ignoring them all together.
aDo something for someone else. Invite others who are alone to join you or volunteer somewhere.
aAttend church at a different time and day and come early to meditate and pray.
aMerry & Happy are probably not going to be part of your vocabulary. Decide on an
appropriate response now, before you’re faced with it.
aShop early or online. Gift cards can ease the stress of finding just the right gift.
aAllow time for yourself but be careful not to become isolated.
aKnow that whether bidden or not, God is present with you.
