FROM THE TREASURER Operating Budget 2011/2012 Our operating budget supports everything we do: all ministries, new programs, and keeping traditions going strong. With a renewed, emerging vision, we continue to press ahead. Our giving back to God supports new initiatives and funds lasting responsibilities. With this in mind, the finance committee recommended, and the vestry approved, the following budget. Progress has been made, yet our budget cries out for significant increases in fundraising. Administration expenditures include: support staff compensation (executive assistant, financial administrator and part-time printer, receptionist, and business manager), audit and appraisal expenses, office supplies, telephone, computer and website support. Property expenditures include: sexton compensation, utilities, maintenance and repairs, supplies, property replacement, grounds and insurance. Education expenditures include: education and youth staff compensation, curriculum purchases, youth projects, confirmation retreats, supplies, food, and transportation. Music expenditures include: music staff compensation, funding for Christmas and Easter brass, and other music department expenses. Parish Life expenditures include: postage, printing, worship supplies, stewardship, newcomer initiatives, advertising, parish retreat and fellowship. The Lay Staff Salary reserve represents an amount in the budget for staff retention adjustments. The Diocesan Assessment supports Diocesan missions and operations. This budget projects a deficit of $73,800, 5.7% of the budget. While still a deficit, it is smaller in amount and percent, than last year’s budgeted deficit. How will we finance this We can finance this through (a) parishioners giving above and beyond their pledges in support of our mission, (b) continuing to search out operating efficiencies, (c) using the remainder of our undesignated operating funds and (d) obtaining additional funding from our operating trusts. Pledge income continues to be the largest single source of income, as it is and must be for all congregations. Pledges provide the lion’s share of the funds for our programming. Without robust pledging things grind to a halt. Endowment Foundation income amount includes the church’s regular quarterly contribution from the Foundation, as well as a transfer of funds that had been received by the church and set aside in prior years. Additionally, we received additional income due to a recalculation of trust income pursuant to a change in Ohio law. No one favors deficits. Given our flat level of expenditures, it is apparent that, as always, our financial issues are at their center, revenue issues. Congregations that accept proportional giving as the goal flourish compared to those that don’t. MORE FROM THE TREASURER 2011 Stock Transfer As we approach the end of the calendar year, some parishioners may wish to fulfill their pledge by donating stock. When transferring shares of stock to St. Paul’s, please follow these instructions to make certain that you, the donor, can be identified by the Church, credited the correct contribution amount and that the transaction goes smoothly. ST. PAUL’S MEMORIAL GARDEN Planning for the End of Life The Memorial Garden at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church was dedicated on All Saints’ Sunday, 1992, for the interment of ashes directly into the earth for those choosing cremation and wanting their final resting place to be on the grounds of the church. St. Paul’s has an account with the Akron, Ohio branch of Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC. Securities may be transferred directly into this account from your personal brokerage account. At your direction, your broker can transfer any number of shares of stock to St. Paul’s account, thus eliminating the need to issue stock certificates in St. Paul’s name. Please instruct your brokerage firm with a Letter of Authorization to make the transfer as follows: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Account #7789-1275 DTC Code/Clearing #0141 Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC 3800 Embassy Pkwy. We CANNOT identify you from just the stock transfer information we receive and therefore need to hear from you to give you proper credit for your donation. Beyond being a place for the interment of ashes and for remembering the deceased, the garden has become an important component of St. Paul’s Church grounds. It is alive with beautiful plantings; benches create sitting areas for peaceful meditation and reflection. You are invited to visit the garden, to linger, and to reap the benefits of this special place. Should you desire at this time to choose St. Paul’s Memorial Garden as your final resting place, contact Marcheta Scott at 330-836-9327 (ext 21) to purchase an affordable interment agreement or to set up an appointment with a member of the clergy to discuss funeral arrangements which will reflect your desired wishes. Donations to the Memorial Garden are gratefully accepted. Advent Altar Flowers During the Advent season, the altar flowers will reflect a period of quietness and contemplation, as we look forward to the joyous celebration of the birth of our Savior. As is our custom, the Flower Guild is planning special Christmas Festival flowers to mark His coming. We receive gifts to support our ministry and memorialize or honor a special person or event. If you wish to do so, you may contribute to the festival flowers in the envelopes provided for ‘Christmas Memorial Flowers and Greens’. Throughout the year, Flower Guild volunteers will prepare small arrangements from the altar flowers appropriate for shut-ins, hospitals, and nursing homes. To carry St. Paul’s good wishes, Flower Delivery Ministry volunteers will distribute these arrangements to parishioners and others who are unable to be with us. During the year you may also wish to consider supporting the Guild through an altar remembrance on a particular Sunday. To do so, you may contact Nancy Parker at (330) 867-1538. Your memorial gifts will be noted in the bulletin and/or a subsequent newsletter.
