6 Regulations<br />

6.1 LAW GOVERNING FOOD SANITATION i<br />

The Department of Health (DOH) is the statutory body responsible for the management of food<br />

safety on <strong>Taiwan</strong>. Food products must comply with the “Law Govern<strong>in</strong>g Food Sanitation”,<br />

together with a series of food standards. The <strong>Taiwan</strong> Food & Drug Adm<strong>in</strong>istration is responsible<br />

for food quality <strong>in</strong>spections of imports. The food safety <strong>in</strong>spection of processed foods focuses on<br />

labell<strong>in</strong>g, food hygiene and food additives.<br />

6.2 SANITATION STANDARD FOR BOTTLED AND PACKAGED DRINKING WATER ii<br />

6.3 FOOD ADDITIVE REGULATIONS iii<br />

Imported processed food products that conta<strong>in</strong> artificial food additives are subject to strict<br />

tolerance levels and acceptable use requirements prescribed by <strong>Taiwan</strong>’s Department of Health.<br />

There are 17 additives categories <strong>in</strong> total. Standards for each of these categories can be found<br />

on the <strong>Taiwan</strong> Food and Drug Adm<strong>in</strong>istration website www.fda.gov.tw. The standards for two of<br />

theses categories (sanitiz<strong>in</strong>g agents and preservatives) are listed below.<br />

6.4 LABELLING REQUIREMENTS I<br />

All processed food and beverage products imported <strong>in</strong>to <strong>Taiwan</strong> for retail sale must have a<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese language label (NOTE: <strong>Taiwan</strong> uses traditional Ch<strong>in</strong>ese characters, not the simplified<br />

characters used <strong>in</strong> Ma<strong>in</strong>land Ch<strong>in</strong>a).<br />

The Ch<strong>in</strong>ese label must <strong>in</strong>dicate the follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation:<br />

• Product name<br />

• Name, weight, volume or quantity of contents<br />

• Name of food additives<br />

• Name, telephone number and detailed address of manufacturer<br />

• Name, telephone number and detailed address of importer<br />

• Country of orig<strong>in</strong><br />

• Expiration date<br />

Any consumer-packaged food product must also carry specific nutritional labell<strong>in</strong>g. The nutrition<br />

label must provide the follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation on the outer package or conta<strong>in</strong>er of the product:<br />

a) Title of the "Nutrition labell<strong>in</strong>g"<br />

b) Energy contents<br />

c) Amount of prote<strong>in</strong>, fat, saturated fat, trans fat, carbohydrate and sodium conta<strong>in</strong>ed (note that<br />

the carbohydrate here<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes dietary fibre)<br />

d) Contents of other nutrients declared <strong>in</strong> the nutrition claim<br />

e) Contents of other nutrients labelled by the manufacturer voluntarily<br />
