6 Regulations
6.1 LAW GOVERNING FOOD SANITATION i
The Department of Health (DOH) is the statutory body responsible for the management of food
safety on Taiwan. Food products must comply with the “Law Governing Food Sanitation”,
together with a series of food standards. The Taiwan Food & Drug Administration is responsible
for food quality inspections of imports. The food safety inspection of processed foods focuses on
labelling, food hygiene and food additives.

Imported processed food products that contain artificial food additives are subject to strict
tolerance levels and acceptable use requirements prescribed by Taiwan’s Department of Health.
There are 17 additives categories in total. Standards for each of these categories can be found
on the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration website www.fda.gov.tw. The standards for two of
theses categories (sanitizing agents and preservatives) are listed below.
