Call for Proposals for Rogowski Coils
22/February/2012
Barcelona

1. Call for Proposals – Rogowski Coils
F4E is preparing the launch of a Call for Proposals for Rogowski Coils
(RC) by end of quarter 1, 2012
Scope:
•From functional specifications, develop final designs of the RC up to a
level where Build-To-Print (BTP) drawings can be produced and
support BTP drawing production.
•R&D/Design activities to include: Interface definition, Testing
definition and execution, Production of the Design Description (DDD),
Performance characteristics etc.
Budget range:
•Total estimated cost: 750.000 € -1.000.000 €
•Estimated F4E contribution (40%): 300.000 € - 400.000 €

2. Rogowski Coils at ITER
Primary Aim:
•Measure the current flow through the blanket and
divertor modules into the vacuum vessel
•Information will be used to determine halo currents in the
vacuum vessel via reconstruction procedure (not in
scope)
Location:
•Around the blanket earth straps (Blanket RC)
•Around divertor cassettes (Divertor RC)

3. Particular challenges for RC at ITER
ITER stringent requirements:
•Thermal survival range: 300 K – 625 K
•Outgassing leaks
•Exposure to large neutron fluxes
•Potentially severe electro-magnetic loads from disruption
events
•No Remote-Handling foreseen -> High reliability
Particular challenges for the RC:
•Small dimensions, but high sensitivity
•Tight bending radii
•Large stray fields during disruptions

4. Management activities
This grant involves not only technical work, but as well
managerial activities as the Supplier shall:
•Produce and manage the Project Schedule
•Produce a Risk Plan and manage the Risk
•Manage the resources, progress reporting, manage
deviations etc.
5. Indicative schedule
Call for proposals launched: 1Q2012
Kick-Off meeting / Start of the grant: 3Q2012
Grant duration: Around 30 months from grant signature /
dictated by ITER assembly schedule
