EDVENTURE JOINS NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD
Building Better Futures for All Children
COLUMBIA, SC– April 15, 2013– EdVenture Children’s Museum joins United Way of the Midlands in
celebration of the National Week of the Young Child. Held from April 14 to April 20, the Week of the Young
Child will focus on bringing public awareness to the needs of young children and their families, and recognize
early childhood education professionals, services and programs designed to meet their needs.
In honor of the National Week of the Young Child, EdVenture and community partners will provide hands-on
activities, games, educational information, story times, storybook character appearances, educational seminars for
parents, nutritional snacks, face painting, crafts and theatre performances on April 16-20 from 9am-12pm.
“Early learning experiences are crucial to the growth and development of young children,” said Catherine Wilson
Horne, president and CEO of EdVenture Children’s Museum. “Week of the Young Child provides opportunities for
all of us to recognize the importance of the early years, and to work together to build better futures for all
children.”
EdVenture’s programs coinciding with the National Week of the Young Child will include a proclamation by
Mayor Steve Benjamin on April 19 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a story time with the Mayor in the “My Backyard”
gallery dedicated to EdVenture’s youngest audience.
"When we read to our children, we open their eyes to the wide world of opportunities before them and give them
the tools they need to reach out and grasp those opportunities and live up to their own God-given potential right
here at home," said Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin. "By making the time to read to our children, we can literally
change their lives and help transform Columbia into a truly world-class city."
Across the country, young children and their families depend on quality education and care, which help children
get a great start, and bring lasting benefits for society as a whole. Week of the Young Child is a time to recognize
the people, programs and policies that are helping to build better futures for all children.
“Promoting literacy in young children goes hand in hand with United Way’s vision of ensuring all children are
ready for school, reading on time and succeeding in life,” said Mac Bennett, president and CEO of United Way of
the Midlands. “We are fortunate to have strong partners in the community to help us achieve our mutual goals.”
