STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
“You cannot serve both God and mammon” (Luke 16:13).
Without even knowing what mammon may be, we get the
stewardship message — what is important to us God, or all
of the other things in our lives which may distract us from
living God‐centered lives.
Scholars cannot universally
agree on the origins of the
word “mammon.” In Greek
the word was mammōnas,
which means “wealth or
treasure.” In Latin the word
was mammon, which translated
“riches and avarice.”
However, it is in Christ’s
native language, Aramaic, where we may find the stewardship
truth. The Aramaic word was mamon. That word had a
dual meaning to the Lord in His own tongue —yes, it meant
“riches,” but it also meant “chaos, darkness.”
That may have been the point Jesus was trying to make in
the Parable of the Unjust Steward. It is not just devotion to
things that provide us with a major roadblock to living lives
of stewardship. Those same “riches” may place us in a
world of darkness, not the light of Christ which results from
living as good stewards. Jesus is constantly advising us to be
very careful about attaching our hearts to “things.” Truly we
cannot serve both God and mammon.
The Returning Catholics Program is designed to assist
those who wish to consider returning to the Church.
The program includes updating in the beliefs and practices
of the Catholic Church, listening to the stories of
those who have been away and, most importantly, helping
them reconcile any negative feelings they may have
about the Church. Many of the team members have
themselves been away from the Church for a number of
years and are uniquely suited to appreciate the stories
of those who are considering returning. The program
ends with an opportunity to experience the Sacrament
of Reconciliation in the context of a relaxed scripturebased
reconciliation service.
What’s Going On In Your Neighborhood
Do you know that the San Diego/US‐Mexico border region is an international gateway for human trafficking
Do you know that San Diego has been identified by the FBI as a high intensity child prostitution area
Do you know that at least 1 million American children are involved in prostitution each year
Do you know that sex trafficking is a multi‐billion dollar business annually and is the fastest growing business of
organized crime
Do you know that Catholics have an obligation to advocate for the oppressed and enslaved
Injustice in the world is a challenge. We are all called to reflect the love of Christ, particularly to the poor and oppressed.
To do so, we must open our eyes to injustice and replace our indifference with mercy and justice.
Feast of Faith
A walk-through of the Mass from beginning to end
Doxology and Amen
“Doxology” comes from a Greek word meaning “words of praise.” The Eucharistic Prayer ends with a doxology
addressed to the triune God: “Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever.” It is an exclamation of praise, honor, and glory to God,
reminding us that we receive everything from God through the Son, in the power of the Spirit. At the consecration,
the priest held up the host and then the chalice for us to see and adore. During the doxology, the host and
chalice are held up again, but this time they are held up and offered to God the Father. With the doxology, the Eucharistic
Prayer ends, as it began, with words of praise addressed to the Father: truly, it is right and just to give
God praise, and we assent to this in our whole‐hearted acclamation, “Amen.” Never was more meaning packed
into so short a word. This “Amen,” sometimes and fittingly called “the great Amen,” is our response to the entire
Eucharistic Prayer.
St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our
name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are
in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the
training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit:
