Required Texts
1. “Getting from College to Career: 90 Things to Do Before You Join the Real World” by Lindsay Pollak (C2C).
2. CFAN 1201 Course Packet – cost of packet includes the assessments you will take for class.
Course Learning Outcomes
During the course, you will:
Assess components of your personality, strengths, values, skills, and interests.
Think critically about how your personality, values, skills and interests relate to appropriate options related to
major, industry and career options.
Identify and use major and career information resources to research options.
Think about how best to prepare for a career while in college.
Create an initial resume that documents current skills and experiences.
Develop an academic and career related action plan with SMART goals.
Attendance
Learning in this course is best accomplished via in-class discussions and interactive activities, and attendance is required.
For an absence to be excused you must contact me before class with a valid excuse. Each unexcused absence and all
excused absences after the first, will result in 10 points being deducted from your final grade. After 3 absences you will be
encouraged to drop the class.
Participation
Participating is how you will learn the most! Your final grade includes 30 points (2 per day) for participation. Being tardy,
failure to speak in discussions, sleeping during class, not having required materials with you, etc. are all reasons that
participation points may be deducted from the total.
Quality of Work
All assignments must be typed (unless indicated otherwise), double spaced, 12 pt font, 1.25” margins, and grammatically
correct. Failure to proofread your work will negatively impact your grade on assignments. Emailed assignments are
acceptable in a pinch, if the message is sent before class starts.
Late Assignments
If you need an extension, please let the instructor know 1 week before the deadline. Late work will be docked 10% each
business day after the due date, up to a total of 50% off. If you have problems getting to class or printing your assignment,
it is expected that you will email the completed assignment before class begins. Assignments emailed after the beginning of
class are considered late. If you have missed a class where assignments were given or discussed, it is your responsibility to
get the assignment information, and you are still expected to get the work done on time unless you have made appropriate
arrangements with the instructor in advance of the due date.
Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
The University of Minnesota is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to students who have documented
disabilities that may affect their ability to participate in course activities or to meet course requirements. If you need
accommodations contact Disability Services (180 McNamara Center, 612-626-1333) to discuss your individual needs.

Student Mental Health
As a student you may experience a range of issues that can cause barriers to learning, such as strained relationships,
increased anxiety, alcohol/drug problems, feeling down, difficulty concentrating and/or lack of motivation. These mental
health concerns or stressful events may lead to diminished academic performance or reduce a student’s ability to
participate in daily activities. University of Minnesota services are available to assist you with addressing these and other
concerns you may be experiencing. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential mental health services
available on campus via the Student Mental Health Website at http://www.mentalhealth.umn.edu
Student Conduct
Students are expected to follow the University Student Conduct Code and to behave in a manner that creates a positive
learning environment in the classroom. Students whose behavior is disruptive either to the instructor or to other students
will be asked to leave. For more information visit: http://www1.umn.edu/oscai/conduct/student/index.html
Student Senate Academic Workload Policy
For an average student to achieve an average grade, U policy indicates that a one-credit class should require a total of 3
hours of effort each week. So - in addition to the one hour of class time, expect to put in 2 hours of effort outside of class
every week for a total of 3 hours per week, http://policy.umn.edu/Policies/Education/Education/STUDENTWORK.html
Student Academic Integrity
ALL Instances of cheating / plagiarism will be reported to the Office for Student Conduct and Academic Integrity. Do NOT
copy/paste information off of the web, this is considered plagiarism and will be reported as such. Within this course, a
student responsible for scholastic dishonesty can be assigned a penalty up to and including an "F" or "N" for the course. If
you have any questions regarding the expectations for a specific assignment, ask. For information on what constitutes
plagiarism: http://writing.umn.edu/sws/quick_help/index.htm. For information on issues of academic integrity:
